Experience Haywood 2015 |

WAYNESVILLE Waynesville is Haywood County’s largest town and county seat, containing both the Haywood County Courthouse and town of Waynesville offices. Single-family homes and retail stores surround the historic downtown with its quaint brick sidewalks, galleries, breweries, gourmet restaurants, clothing and gift stores.

Locals mingle with droves of tourists for daily lunches, downtown festivals and gallery strolls.

On the outskirts of town, mountain homes look across the valley below with views of the Smoky Mountains stretching for miles.

The town was founded by Robert Love, a Revolutionary War colonel born in Virginia, and named after “Mad” Anthony Wayne, a Revolutionary War hero. After the war Love, his wife and 10 children relocated from their home in what is now part of eastern Tennessee to Haywood County’s Richland Creek area.

Love was a wealthy man who had inherited a fortune and worked as a land speculator, lawyer, justice of the peace, surveyor, state senator and clerk of court.

In 1809, Love donated 17 acres for the town

of Waynesville, which was where the courthouse, jail and stocks were to be built. A main street and cross street were plotted, along with a public square and 30 half acre lots. The public square was located at the intersection of Main Street and Cross Street — today known as Church Street on one end and East Street on the other.

The town of Hazelwood, incorporated in 1905, was a town in and of its own right until it merged with Waynesville in 1995. The tiny town initially housed employees at W.H. Cole’s sawmill, but then grew to contain several industries including a furniture factory, a tannery, and a shoe and boot factory. Houses constructed in the area tend not to have basements, due to a high water table.

Hazelwood is home to the Folkmoot Friendship Center, headquarters of the state’s official international festival, celebrated each year in July. The original downtown area of Hazelwood has its own unique personality and is now home to a small cluster of restaurants, a coffee shop, and specialty retail stores.

Nearby communities include Allens Creek, Hyatt Creek, Balsam and Saunook.

CANTON The neighboring towns of Canton and Clyde are the bedrock of eastern Haywood County.

Canton largely grew up out of service to what is now the Evergreen Packaging, a large paper mill on the banks of the Pigeon River. Many of the homes in the area, particularly in downtown Canton, are architectural gems. The tiny but well-designed buildings housed mill workers and managers. The town rose in the early 1900s and was a bustle of activity in Haywood County.

Canton’s downtown buildings are an interesting mix of styles with notable structures such as the Imperial Hotel. Built soon after the railroad reached Canton around 1880, it was originally a private home. Over the years it was advertised as “one of the best commercial hotels of the $2 class in this state,” and in 1918 was renovated to become separate offices, shops and residences. The town’s Main Street Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Just south of Canton is Bethel, a rural community located in an open valley north of the now-famous Cold Mountain. The community

provides a rural escape where you’ll also find a local restaurant, gas station, produce stand or home-run business dotting the miles of rolling pasture land tucked in between mountain peaks.

The Blue Ridge Parkway and Pisgah National Forest are easily accessible via U.S. 276 or N.C. 215 from Bethel. Cruso is south of Bethel along U.S. 276. The community proclaims itself “Nine miles of friendly people and one old grouch.” There’s even an annual contest to elect the old grouch.

Nearby communities include Beaverdam, Dutch Cove, Hominy, Pigeon, Newfound and Sunburst.

CLYDE Located east of Waynesville and west of Canton, Clyde is largely a residential community with a small central business district. Clyde’s location makes it a great place for commuters with jobs in the region’s larger towns. Clyde is home to Haywood Community College, with its renowned professional crafts program, and Duke Lifepoint Hospital, a leading health care center for the county, with its 930 employees and 150 physicians.

The town is also home to what is thought to be the oldest house in Haywood County, the Shook-Smathers Home. Jacob Shook, a Revolutionary War veteran, built the house in 1795.

It began as a log house, but the home’s attic was turned into a large chapel. Today the restored home is a museum.

The township of Clyde officially was formed in 1877 but was not incorporated until 1889.

The town’s boundary forms a perfect circle. It is said that the circle’s midpoint was a knothole in a floorboard of the town’s train station, and from that knothole a geometric circle was drawn and all the area within that circle became part of the town.

Nearby communities include Ratcliff Cove, Stamey Cove and Thickety.

LAKE JUNALUSKA Lake Junaluska is the assembly for the Southeast Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church and home to the World Methodist Council. For many years the lake was a private community; however, it is now open to the public for walking, jogging, boating, fishing and swimming in its pool, as well as vacation rentals and dining. Its stone chapel with a lakeside location is a very popular site for weddings.

The lake and surrounding area were created as a Methodist retreat with homesites along the shoreline. The first building constructed on the property was Stuart Auditorium in 1913. After the lake was filled, work on Shackleford Hall began in 1923, and was not finished until the 1950s.

Lake Junaluska residents and Waynesville residents are expected to decide in a November 2015 referendum whether to merge Lake Junaluska into Waynesville.

Nearby communities include Crabtree and Iron Duff.

MAGGIE VALLEY The eastern gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Maggie Valley was incorporated as a tourist town, a fact evident by its mix of family restaurants, music and entertainment venues, rental properties and souvenir stores. The town is a bustling center of activity throughout the year and a hotspot for motorcyclists.

Maggie Valley got its name after one of the valley’s 1860s settlers, John Sidney Setzer, realized the town was in need of a post office. No name, no post office, the government said.

Four suggestions were sent to Washington, three of them being Setzer’s daughters’ names — Cora, Mettie and Maggie. Maggie was selected, but it wasn’t until about 1947 that the word “valley” was added. Miss Maggie is still around, portrayed by a volunteer who wears a yellow bonnet, waves to passing cars and appears at festivals.

The Wheels Through Time transportation museum houses what some consider the world’s finest collection of vintage motorcycles, and nearly all of them still run. The museum — which also has a classic car collection — attracts visitors from throughout the world and has been featured in several television specials.

Nearby communities include Dellwood, Jonathan Creek, Hemphill, Ivy Hill, Soco, Rabbit Skin, White Oak and approaching the Tennessee Line, Fines Creek, Harmon’s Den, and Panther Creek.

Bank building broke ground in Sept. 2012 with a grand opening October 213. It is a large, aesthetically pleasing structure, one that represents a vote of confidence in placing the business in a commercial corridor that, at the time, was still trying to find its footing.

“When we bought this property, this part of Main Street was pretty quiet, but we knew that was going to change — we could see it,” Umberger said. “Now? Look around where we are.

There are thriving businesses all up and down this street. By building our bank here, we committed to Waynesville, to be part of Haywood County.”

That commitment is also something that goes far beyond the walls of Old Town Bank.

The company itself has been involved in innumerable community events and fundraisers, teaming up with an array of local organizations to connect the dots between residents, businesses and good causes. Alongside their work with the United Way, Habitat for Humanity and Haywood Community College, Old Town Bank also takes great joy in sponsoring the “Mardi Gras Ball.” Raising classroom funds for the Haywood County Schools Foundation, the ball has collected over $275,000 in donations.

“Those funds go directly to the classrooms,” Umberger said. “All of these things help make our community better, and if the community is better, we’re going to be better.”

A North Carolina native, Umberger arrived in Haywood County when Old Town Bank was looking for the right person to be the face of community leadership for their company.

“My father is from this area, and I’ve always wanted to be in Western North Carolina,” he said. “This is a wonderful place to live, work, raise a family, establish roots, to be part of a vibrant community that offers a lot of diversity in its ecology, surroundings and people.”

Umberger himself is a member of Community Bankers Council, which is part of the American Bankers Association. Two community bank CEOs per state are chosen to represent their region, with all 100 nationwide

Charles Umberger knows exactly what makes Old Town Bank special.

Umberger is sitting at his desk within the Old Town Bank headquarters on South Main Street in Waynesville. With bluebird skies outside, he gazed out his office window.

“See all those peaks around?” he pointed to a nearby ridge. “It’s hard to beat that, real hard to beat the water, the mountains, the culture, the music, the food, the people of Western North Carolina — it’s a little bit of heaven.”

Umberger’s sentiments are the exact traits Old Town Bank was founded on. It’s a local, hometown business providing financial services to friends, family members, neighbors, and all those who find their way to Haywood County and greater Western North Carolina in search of their own “little bit of heaven.”

“Our board members are trustees at Haywood Community College, a former president of the Waynesville Rotary Club, town officials, members of the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project, owners of small businesses,” Umberger said. “And they know their community, they see our customers at church, the grocery store, around town, therefore we’re accountable to them.”

And that friendly, sincere interaction is not just part of being a professional at Old Town Bank, it’s also part of being a resident amongst your customers.

Although Old Town Bank set a strong foundation as a community financial entity, it also has one foot firmly planted in a modern world, with state-of-the-art facilities and services, which includes mobile banking.

As Old Town began to grow, the decision was made to build a brand new bank. Located on South Main Street, the current Old Town

Atop it sits the “Business of the Year” award, presented this year to Old Town Bank by the Haywood Chamber of Commerce. Umberger smiles proudly when asked what the award means to his company, his employees and the community in general.

“It’s good to be recognized, but we also look at it as a responsibility. It reminds us of the responsibility we have to continue to do great things within our community and for our community, to help people realize their dreams and aspirations,” he said. “It’s just pretty special. It’s very rewarding to be part of something. It’s what community is all about — it’s why a lot of us chose to live and work here in Haywood County.”

itting on a plush couch, Wells Greeley looks around the luxurious room and can’t believe where he’s situated used to be an empty, gritty and mostly forgotten industrial space.

“We’re proud to have brought this building back to life,” he said. “The one thing I’m most proud about is that we were able to take a building that has been in such disrepair and be able to give something back to our community that’s been so good to us for over 126 years.”

Owner of Wells Funeral Home Inc. & Cremation Services, Greeley is the leader of a successful family business that has been a pillar of Haywood County for generations. At their headquarters in Waynesville (alongside the Canton branch), Greeley had noticed the dilapidated building next door for years.

Formerly the onsite pressroom for The Mountaineer newspaper next door, the location was a space in need of an idea, a spot that was in need of some good ole elbow grease to bring it back to prominence. To many, the old structure should was considered an eyesore, an albatross of unused, somewhat abandoned commercial space around the neck of the downtown Waynesville and greater Haywood County business sector. Some suggested it be demolished, to have the town clean its hand of it. But, to Wells Greeley, he saw potential.

“It was basically raw industrial square footage, and we looked at the property as our expansion,” the 63-year-old said. “I felt like at my age, it was a risk, and still is a risk, but I’m confident with the next generation of our family coming into the business that it was time to

That need for expansion came from Greeley seeing firsthand how the funeral service industry — and event receptions in general — has evolved in recent years. He visited numerous funeral businesses and saw the changing tastes and preferences of the customers he was serving.

“People are wanting to do so many different things now to celebrate their loved ones,” he said. “You have balloon releases, dove releases, services with a more contemporary approach where the music is contemporary, too. Eulogies are becoming a bigger part of the ceremonies, and so is having a food component to these services.”

Since it opened last year, the event center has hosted more than 90 events, many of which have been for more than just funeral services and remembrance ceremonies.

“We’ve had an Austin Healey car gathering, class reunion, 40th wedding anniversary, day-

long company retreats, wedding receptions, and even a Relay for Life bingo night,” Greeley smiled.

And as his business has grown, Greeley is excited for what the future holds. Not only is the ultimate vision widening, so is the family involvement. His daughter, Jennifer Greeley Jacobson, has come onboard as a funeral director and event center coordinator.

“It’s very humbling and rewarding to be able to work with your family,” he said. “I couldn’t be more pleased with having Jennifer and my son-in-law, Ryan, here on our journey.”

Greeley notes that statistically it can be very difficult to keep a family business, well, within the family, after a couple of generations. But, with Jacobson alongside, Greeley now can proudly point to the fifth generation of the company. And Jacobson herself is excited to take on more responsibility within the funeral services and event center.

“The new center just adds another element to what we do to give families a more casual, comfortable and relaxed space,” she said. “It’s not only for the families that we serve, but also for the community at large.”

And as the year rolls on, Wells has plenty to celebrate. Alongside the business being named “Entrepreneur of the Year” for the event center addition, Jacobson was awarded “Volunteer of the Year” (for her work with the Blue Ridge Breakaway and other chamber events) by the Haywood Chamber of Commerce, Wells also received a state honor. The North Carolina Department of Commerce named its recipients of

the “Main Street Awards,” with Wells receiving the “Waynesville Award of Merit” in the category of “Best Business Retention, Expansion or Recruitment Effort.”

“Anytime you get an award, it’s an honor. The fact we’ve taken the step to reinvest in the community is meaningful to us,” Greeley said. “And the project was not without fear, not without doubt, but you’ve got to follow your heart, and that’s what we did — we’re excited to make a difference, and to encourage other businesses to do the same within the community.”

When asked about the “state of business” in Waynesville, Greeley, who is also a town alderman, is not only optimistic, he’s also seeing the fruits of this area’s economic strongholds as the nation itself is currently recovering from the economic downfall.

“Downtown Waynesville is blessed to have the business climate that we have now, but we can’t rest on our laurels,” he said. “We’ve got to continue to recruit and encourage small, family businesses to come to our town, and to also build upon the expanding commercial corridor on South Main Street.”

And what about Haywood County as a whole?

“People love Waynesville, and people love coming to Haywood County,” he said. “Our hope is to take that success in Waynesville and be able to do the same in Canton and Maggie Valley. The level of communication between our municipalities is great right now, and we will continue to make it grow — we’re all in this together.”

and was stopped by Richard Miller, the previous owner of The Chef ’s Table.

“He was looking for a chef and offered me a job right on the spot,” Monroe reminisced with a smile. “So, I became the chef, and three years later, in 2009, I bought the place.”

With the styles and flavors of Italy as the platform, Monroe has taken his love of fine food to the highest levels possible, even beyond farm-to-table.

“It’s seed-to-table here,” he grinned. “There’s nothing better for a chef to put on the plate than something just picked.”

You see, Monroe also owns and operates a 12-acre organic farm in nearby Canton. It’s a farm homestead that he and his family brought back to life, back to what the original agricultural landscape of Haywood County resembled.

hat started as a job while in high school turned itself into a lifelong career and passion for Josh Monroe.

“It’s about using the best possible ingredients you can find and being able to let those ingredients shine in every dish,” he said.

Owner/head chef of The Chef ’s Table in downtown Waynesville, Monroe has created for his customers an atmosphere of incredible food, flare, family and friends. Originally from Fairview, Monroe fell into the food industry by helping his father run the family diner in Asheville. From there, he went to culinary school at AB-Tech and worked in a variety of area kitchens, most notably at the four-star Richmond Hill Inn. Then one day, Monroe found himself strolling down Church Street in Waynesville en route to a job interview at another restaurant.

“It’s a really nice thing to have a customer ask you where an ingredient came from and you know exactly where in your field it was picked,” he said. “And for me, I love being able to learn about the nuances of the ingredients — the weather conditions involved, the seasons, knowing what to grow and the timing of when to pick it.”

If there is an ingredient that he needs, but doesn’t grow himself, Monroe utilizes many of the local farmer’s markets and other organic farms around Western North Carolina. For Monroe, it’s about supporting those who support you.

“Waynesville is such a beautiful place, and it’s still growing, especially with all its natural beauty and opportunities to succeed,” he said.

“This is still a farming community and I love that there’s still so much of that old knowledge of farming here in Haywood County, where you can learn from other farmers and oldtimers on just what you need to do to succeed.”

The world in your backyard Photographer Ed Kelley Ed Kelley holds a lot of titles.

“Well, I’m a musician, photographer, artist and businessman, to name a few,” he chuckled.

Sitting on the back porch of Frog Level Brewing in Waynesville one recent afternoon, Kelly is soaking in the early summer sunshine and fresh mountain air after another day wandering around Haywood County and greater Western North Carolina.

“It’s hard to say exactly what Haywood County is, because it’s a lot of things,” the 60-year-old said. “It’s a great place to live, to work, to raise a family. It’s easy to feel like this is the greatest place on earth because the quality of life is exceptional here.”

And Kelley is no stranger to the extensive possibilities available within business and recreational opportunities in Haywood County. As a citizen of Waynesville and lifelong Haywood resident, he has stepped foot into numerous commercial ventures and outdoor adventures — all of which provide the ideal balance of self.

Within that balance, Kelley himself has been a park attendant and naturalist for Mount Mitchell State Park, a longtime backwoods explorer, and a landscape/wildlife photographer. For years, he and his wife, Jo, operated Ridge Runner Naturals in downtown Waynesville, which specialized in nature-oriented retail items. The company had a great run, only to be put on the backburner in recent years with Jo’s budding success as an oil painter.

“My hope is that people who do come here, to live and work, will recognize the roots of Haywood are in agriculture, in business, in keeping the mountains beautiful,” Ed said.

Though only 60, he has seen a lot of change in his hometown, mainly the transition from a bluecollar community to a full-on tourism business sector. When industrial jobs left the region in recent decades, a lot of that economic void was filled with other industries, like craft beer, restaurants, hospitality, artisan trades, guide services and galleries, amid other avenues of commerce.

“That transition from more factory jobs to tourism has resulted in a large second home and re-

tirement part of the community, and that has been a good thing in many ways, where it has brought in a lot of great people, a lot of diversity to our town and county,” Ed said. “Since the economy has recovered around here, there have been more opportunities for entertainment, restaurants, breweries, and more.”

That said, Ed also sees a sincere appreciation for the cultural traditions of Southern Appalachia in those new to the area, excited for a fresh start in paradise.

“The people here, they appreciate the culture of Appalachia, they want to preserve and perpetuate it,” he said. “This area attracts people who care about ‘community,’ who want to make it better, keep it beautiful, but also want to move forward so that we can be viable economically.”

Unwinding further into his outdoor seat at Frog Level Brewing, Ed gazes along the riverside property. Folks are milling about, children running around, all inhabiting this one-of-akind community carefully nurtured by the high mountain ridges of Haywood County that surround Waynesville.

“When you go away from here, to travel or work, when you see what’s going on elsewhere, it certainly makes you appreciate this area a whole lot more,” Ed said. “We have clean air, clean water, beautiful mountains and incredible people. Haywood County is the only place I’ve wanted to spend my life in. This is everybody’s little piece of heaven — that’s why I’m still here.”

Last year, the ranch decided to launch a series of “Way Back When” dinners, where guests are welcomed to wine and dine amid a traditional trout fish fry. The summer evenings recreate an old-time trout-fishing tent, similar to the one Mr. Tom had in the 1930s when he guided trips at Three Forks in the Great Smoky Mountains. Attendees are brought out in an open, untouched meadow near the ranch house, where they partake in an authentic trout meal, storytelling and live mountain music around the campfire.

She spoke of how her parents started in the hospitality business more than 80 years ago, and how far the family trade has come: 82 years of quality Appalachian hospitality at Cataloochee Ranch, with glasses held high to another 82.

“My parents would be proud of us, they’d be happy my sister Alice and I are still here,” Judy Alexander Coker said. “It’s always been a family run business. Even tonight, my grandchildren are here helping out. I’m real proud, and feel very lucky.”

The salt of the earth Giles Chemical ruising through the Frog Level District of downtown Waynesville, you immediately notice a change in recent years. Once empty buildings have become a bustling commercial corridor of art galleries, a coffee roaster, brewery, and more.

As you continue down Commerce Street, you pass by a rather large warehouse structure. There are numerous vehicles parked in front of it, with countless tractor-trailers coming and going from the loading docks. From the outside, the property appears pretty A-typical and nondescript. But, what lies within is a thriving company, a vital piece in the long-time industrial backbone of Waynesville — Giles Chemical.

“A lot of people don’t know what we do here, even with our signage outside — we’re the largest producer of Epsom salts in North America,” said Jim Hill, president of Giles Chemical.

A modern-day wonder product, Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) is found in seemingly anything one might think up. From consumer medicinal remedies for aches and pains, to agricultural ingredients in fertilizer, livestock feed and enzyme stabilizers, to industrial-strength versions placed in textiles, steel production and rubber processing, the uses for magnesium sulfate are as endless as the truck and train loads coming in and out of their Waynesville production facility.

“And our retail market is only expanding,” said Matt Haynes, director of operations at Giles. “More and more households and business are finding real value in our Epsom salts.”

Founded in 1950 by John Giles, the company came to Haywood County in an effort to set deep roots within a thriving community. At that time, there was a successful tannery in Waynesville, with magnesium sulfate a key part of the process. John saw the potential of setting up shop near the

tannery, only to expand upon his business as more and more industry headed below the Mason-Dixon Line following World War II. “John’s dream was to beneficiate a magnesium-rich ore known as olivine into magnesium derivatives such as Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate heptahydrate) to service the textile and leather tannery markets down here,” Hill said. “At that time, the only other Epsom salt producer in America was Dow Chemical — so John had a niche business here in the Southeast, and it worked.”

As one of the largest employers in the county, Giles has a workforce of 150 well-paying jobs, all of which bring together some of the finest local, regional and national talent available.

“When I came to this company in 2000, we had under 40 employees, and now we’re at 150,” Hill said. “And we’ll continue to hire talented people — we’d love to get to 200 or 250 employees.”

Originally born in Waynesville, Haynes traveled the world in pursuit of his dreams. When the job opportunity at Giles presented itself, he couldn’t pass up the chance to return to the outdoor, economic and social paradise that is Haywood County.

“After having sampled all of these places inside and outside of the country, I can’t think

of a place I’d rather live than Haywood County,” he smiled.

Hill himself relocated to the area some 15 years ago when he joined Giles.

“For me personally, I drive home each night and almost laugh to myself that I get to live and work in one of the most beautiful places in the world,” he said. “There aren’t a whole lot of industrial companies around these days, let alone chemical manufacturing, and I consider myself lucky to be part of Giles.

As we’ve grown, so has this area. Our mantra here is ‘our house,’ where when you join Giles, you’re part of a family, where you can bring your skills, voice and opinions to the table — it makes for an exciting opportunity-filled culture.”

And as they celebrate their 65th year of operation, the company looks at that number as more than just passing days on a calendar. It’s about a two-way street vote of confidence between Giles and the Town of Waynesville. “[65 years] means we’ve been a positive contributor to this community,” Haynes said. “As well as provided stable jobs for all these years, growth for our employees and for the community — we will continue to point in that direction.” “[65 years] means longevity. Uncorking one’s passion Bosu’s Wine Shop tepping away from downtown Waynesville, just down the hill on Miller Street, tucked away under a handful of trees, sits Bosu’s. Crossing the threshold of the wine shop, one immediately feels welcomed in the space, where the idea of “all friends were strangers at one time” floats through the air.

“Wine should be fun and it should remain sacred. We exist because we believe the pleasure and joy in sharing wines exists without sacrifice,” said Maleah Pusz. “That is, without sacrificing exactly who you are and where you are at the moment you join the table. The experience is sacred, yes, yet you arrive to receive it exactly as you are.”

Co-owner of Bosu’s, Pusz sits proudly behind the counter. Any and all who walk in, either a first-time customer of longtime supporter, are greeted with her trademark smile, an ear-to-ear grin of compassion and curiosity, with a sincere enjoyment of what it means to be a small business in a nurturing community.

“So we ask, ‘Do you like it?’ ‘Does this wine make room for more happiness in your life

right now?’” she said. “We offer the best kinds of signposts we’d appreciate on that journey or this one, all the while knowing that what we provide is as necessary as water, but as rudimentary as rain.”

Although Pusz is entering her second year of ownership, Bosu’s itself has been a fixture within Waynesville and greater Haywood County for the better part of 22 years. Originally created by Robert “Bob” Dune, the location has become a refuge of sorts for folks looking to sit back, relax and take a moment to appreciate what matters most in life — friends, family and fulfilling banter.

“Wine invites you to pause and reflect on the beauty of just here and just now,” Pusz said.

“Sacraments are passed through tradition not because we know what they mean, but because they allow us to become new each time. Who you become as a result of experience or education can change. In fact, we’re all changing all the time. White zinfandel drinkers become Riesling fans become fruit-forward merlot guzzlers become dusty Chianti sippers become Riesling fans again.”

Pusz herself hails from nearby Jackson County. She was, and is, in love with the world, and yet wasn’t sure what it was she’d find herself doing. She went to college, studying to be an English teacher. And alongside her student teaching, she worked as an importer for a winery in Asheville, as a bookkeeper for a restaurant, a barista at Panacea Coffee Company, and also making chocolate goodies as a side business with her mother.

“I wasn’t really finding the exact work I wanted, but I wasn’t willing to pack up and go somewhere else,” Pusz said. “I wanted to be here, in Haywood County.”

While working at Panacea in the Frog Level District of Waynesville, Pusz would walk by Bosu’s daily to and from the coffeehouse. Her curiosity got the best of her and she wandered in one day, unknowingly changing the course of her life. She became friends with Dune, enjoying the warmth and coziness of the establishment.

Alongside her good friend Tony Gaddis, the two showed an interest in taking over Bosu’s when Dune had mentioned he was looking to

retire from the business. So, each week, the duo would stop by often and chat with Dune, perhaps help him out with a tasting, perhaps just keeping him company.

They developed a friendship with Dune, one that remains to this day.

Entering its 23rd year, Bosu’s remains a space of jovial conversation and interaction through its numerous tastings and celebratory events. And Pusz is at the center of it, ready and eager to perpetuate her joyous atmosphere, to make a new friend or spend quality time with an old one.

“It’s a very spiritual thing when I write a name down on a place card. It’s a prayer that the person is able to attend, that they have a great time, and feel as much a part of a family as we do to them,” she said. “There’s something different here in Haywood County in how we treat each other. Though we are a community of natives and transplants, there is this cohesiveness that is found nowhere else.”

Frog Level Brewing Company trolling down Commerce Street in the Historic Frog Level District of Waynesville, one initially smells the sweet roast of beans wafting from Panacea Coffee Company. A few steps further and nostrils are treated to the invigorating mash flavors drifting from Frog Level Brewing.

“We’re here to provide quality, craft made beer for Haywood County. This is where I’m from and this is where my family is. I think craft beer is a good drive,” said Clark Williams, Frog Level owner/brewer. “So, if I can grow a successful business and at the same time bring others here who would normally not come here, who will then enjoy and experience our culinary scene, our mountains, our artwork and museums, then that’s great.”

Being the first out of the gate in Haywood County, Williams opened his doors in December 2011, only to be joined in recent years by BearWaters, Tipping Point and Boojum breweries in Waynesville. Offering four flagship beers (cream, rye, nut brown and pale ale), Frog Level also brews several “rare keg” selections, which can range from a coffee stout (with beans from Panacea) to a harvest ale (with apples from nearby Barber Orchard).

“The creative aspect has grown on me. Developing a product from grain to the glass was inspiring, just to know that I could do that. You wonder all the time if we can make a beer with sweet potatoes, green beans, lavender or honey,” Williams said.

Reflecting on his own heritage growing up and residing in Haywood County, Williams feels these up-and-coming breweries are only going to be a catalyst for the culture and traditions unique to the Great Smoky Mountains.

“I think that heritage mentality goes from the tobacco grower to the moonshiner, being proud of something and making a product to support their families,” he said.

“I like that Bryson City can claim they have a brewery, Sylva can claim two, Waynesville can claim they have four. It’s almost retrograding back to the days when every town had a brewery.”

And in terms of hops, Williams is all for strains that are grown locally.

“I would use local hops every chance I got — in a heartbeat,” he said. “I’d buy them all and use them. I hope others will grow them because the industry will gobble them up.”

In recent years, Frog Level created a brew using materials from Winding River Hops in Clyde. The brewery also released a pale ale, “Frog P,” which included hops from H&K Hops Farm in Beaverdam. Williams worked closely with H&K co-owner Heidi Dunkelberg (who also owns The Coffee Cup Café in Clyde) in using her Cascade variety of hops — the most popular, produced and adaptable strain in the craft beer industry. For the 150 gallons of “Frog P” brewed, Williams estimated he used upwards of eight pounds of Dunkelberg’s hops.

“It’s Haywood County hops grown in Haywood County soil,” he said. “It’s a total woodsy flavor, with a real earthy taste to it. I couldn’t

have planned on anything better coming out of that beer.”

In terms of a farm-to-table mentality, whether it be a brewery or restaurant, Williams noted that anytime a local business uses local ingredients, everybody wins.

“We’re all in this together, where together we succeed and individually we will fail,” he said.

With over 20 breweries in Asheville (named “Beer City USA” for multiple years), that loud rumble of craft beer is echoing far into Haywood County and beyond. And yet, despite all of the noise and excitement echoing out Asheville’s microbrew scene, those in Waynesville look to create their own buzz, something that will stand on its own and ultimately link into the future of brewing and backwoods tradition in Southern Appalachia.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is perhaps America’s most scenic byway, a ribbon of sweeping curves and stunning vistas stretching 469 miles from Cherokee to Virginia that goes from one end of Haywood County to another.

It’s hard to get lost on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It only goes in two directions — north or south. Short, wooden posts along the edge of the road mark off each mile, making it easy to know exactly where you are. The milemarker number is listed for the recommended stops on the Parkway and should be easy to find by watching the mileposts.

Hint: the numbers get bigger as you go south, so the end of the Parkway in Cherokee is mile 469.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park’s Cataloochee Valley History and nature intersect in this picturesque meadow, a long, narrow valley cradled by mountains on all sides that was once a thriving pioneer community and was part of Haywood County.

An elk herd has been re-introduced into the park and calls the valley home.

Elk were once common here but were overhunted in the early 1800s to extinction in the eastern states. Elk can be seen on most days, and the best time for viewing is in the early mornings or the early evenings.

Cataloochee Valley is also home to intact farm houses, churches, a schoolhouse and cemeteries that can be toured by car and short walks. There are several hiking trails that start in the valley, and it is also a favored location for trout anglers.

From Maggie Valley, take U.S. 276 north toward I-40, but just before the interstate, turn left on Cove Creek Road, which leads up and over the Cataloochee Divide and winds down into the valley. Beware the narrow, gravel road.

Waterfalls Waterfalls have long had an almost spiritual appeal among humans, and there are plenty in and around Haywood County. Whether one is an avid outdoorsman or an occasional hiker, there is something special about making a gorgeous waterfall the destination for a hike.

There are hundreds of waterfalls in Western North Carolina, and there is a fairly extensive list and an interactive map on The Smoky Mountain News website at www.smokymountainnews.com (navigate to the Outdoors section to find it).

There’s not much of a waterfall at Midnight Hole, but if you’re looking for a good place to jump in the water, this is it. Midnight Hole is very popular and crowded at times. Swimmers can jump off the rocks into the pool.

The water is cold and crystal clear and feels wonderful after the hike on a hot, muggy afternoon.

Take I-40 Exit 451 in Tennessee. It will be the first exit after you cross the state line.

Stay left after crossing the Pigeon River and follow the road 2 miles. You’ll drive by a power plant and community park. You’ll come to a stop sign at an intersection. Follow the gravel road 0.8 miles to a picnic area and campground entrance.

From the parking area, walk back up the road. You’ll see a sign on the left for the trailhead. The hike to Midnight Hole is about 1.5 miles. Stay on the main path and the hole is on the left. The hike is easy. Horses and their riders also frequent the trail.

WEST FORK PIGEON RIVER The waterfall on West Fork Pigeon River runs under an old stone bridge on N.C. 215. Although this waterfall isn’t one to plan a trip around, if you’re driving on N.C. 215, it’s worth a stop. You can take shots from the road and the bridge but watch out for traffic.

The waterfall is under a bridge on N.C. 215, 4.2 miles from where N.C. 215 crosses the Blue Ridge Parkway. It’s 13.6 miles south of where N.C. 215 intersects with U.S. 276.

The waterways in the Smoky Mountains attract trout fishermen from around the world, and it’s no wonder. Whether you’re in search of native brook trout or trophy-sized browns, you can find just the right river to make it happen.

Western North Carolina recently hosted the World Fly Fishing championships, and the Fly Fishing Museum of the Southern Appalachians just opened this year in nearby Cherokee.

In Haywood County, places like Cataloochee Valley or the Pisgah National Forest offer miles of backcountry streams. Easily accessible streams like Richland Creek and Jonathan Creek are also popular for those without the time or inclination to venture into the backcountry.

Soco Falls is the closest large fall to Maggie Valley. Two creeks flow over steep rock cascades at a right angle from each other. There’s a wooden platform that faces the higher of the two falls. The other falls is nearly impossible to see face on without going down to the base of the falls. There’s a really steep dirt incline that goes down without a lot to hold on to.

From Maggie Valley, drive west on U.S. 19. You’ll pass under the Blue Ridge Parkway. After passing the Blue Ridge Parkway, drive 1.4 miles to a pull off on the left.

A short, steep path goes down between the guardrails.

Follow the trail, which leads to a wooden platform.

Whitewater Nantahala The Nantahala River is a world-class paddling adventure. No experience is necessary to climb on board a raft with an outfitter and take a guided trip down the pristine rapids of the Nanty.

The Nantahala has been called “everyman’s river.” It is an 8-mile run of basically Class II rapids (19 of them) with Class III Nantahala Falls waiting at the end. There is a slalom course on the river at the Nantahala Outdoor Center as well as “the wave” for playboaters. It is a wonderful river for rafting and beginner kayakers. Several outfitters on the river allow raft rentals without guides, and they’ll also shuttle you to the put-in.

Pigeon The Pigeon River, which flows through Haywood County, boasts Class IV and Class III rapids along with easygoing sections for a varied whitewater experience with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as a backdrop. The Pigeon has scheduled releases from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, providing a shorter but exciting trip. A number of outfitters are located in Hartford, Tennessee.

The visitor center chronicles the culture and history of the Smokies and is also a great starting point for anyone visiting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Waynesville’s Richland Creek Greenway — An approximately 1-mile walk along Richland Creek that extends from the Waynesville Recreation center to Vance Street Park. Canton Greenway — A 1.5-mile riverwalk along the Pigeon River and going through the Canton Recreation Park. www.cantonnc.com.

Lake Junaluska Walking Trail — This 2.6-mile loop around a gorgeous lake is probably the most popular walking trail in Haywood County. Historic architecture and a stunning rose walk. www.lakejunaluska.com.

America’s largest residence The Biltmore Estate, built by George Vanderbilt in the late 19th century, is America’s largest private home and one of the top tourist destinations in North Carolina. The 255-room Biltmore House in Asheville still contains its original collection of 50,000 furnishings, artwork and antiques.

The 8,000-acre estate also features fabulous gardens designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted.

At Biltmore’s Outdoor Center, activities include carriage rides, mountain bike riding, horseback riding, guided Segway tours, fly fishing, river float trips, and sessions at the Land Rover Experience Driving School.

Boogerman Trail — This 3.8-mile loop hike in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park takes you past old growth hemlocks and Robert “Booger” Palmer’s home place (hence the name). There’s plenty of creek views and wildflowers. Nearly a mile in, you’ll see a sign for Boogerman Trail. To avoid a steep climb, continue further up Caldwell Fork Trail and take the upper loop of Boogerman Trail. The hike begins near the Cataloochee campground. Drive past the campground about 500 feet and park in the next to the footbridge.

This is an unofficial parking area and fills up quickly on the weekends. Easy.

Hemphill Bald — The Loop hike at Hemphill Bald is 13.7 miles in total, but just 4.7 miles in will get you to the Bald. The bald was named after a pioneer family. From the Blue Ridge Parkway intersection with U.S. 19 in Maggie Valley go South on the Parkway toward the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. At milepost 458.2 turn right on Heintooga Ridge Road. Continue for approximately 6 miles to the trailhead at Polls Gap. Medium.

Mount Sterling Gap Trail — This low ridge trail begins at Mt. Sterling Gap on Cataloochee-Big Creek Road. It’s only 2.8 miles to the firetower, but is rated extremely strenuous because of a 2,000-foot climb in 2.3 miles along an old jeep trail to the ridge just below the firetower. This firetower is one of three remaining in the Park. There are several excellent lookouts from the trail prior to reaching the main ridge, but the view from the tower is unequalled in the Park. The view includes the Pigeon River Gorge (below), the Unaka Mountains, the main ridge of the Smokies, the Black Mountains (east), and the end of the Southern Appalachians. The peak is a crossroads with trails leading up from Cataloochee, Baxter Creek, and Pretty Hollow Gap Trail, which is 14 miles in and of itself. The Sterling Gap trailhead is located on N.C. 284 at Mt. Sterling Gap. Difficult.
