Waynesville is Haywood County’s largest town and county seat, containing both the Haywood County Courthouse and town of Waynesville offices. Single-family homes and retail stores surround the historic downtown with its quaint brick sidewalks, galleries, breweries, gourmet restaurants, clothing and gift stores. Locals mingle with droves of tourists for daily lunches, downtown festivals and gallery strolls. On the outskirts of town, mountain homes look across the valley below with views of the Smoky Mountains stretching for miles.

The town was founded by Robert Love, a Revolutionary War colonel born in Virginia, and named after “Mad” Anthony Wayne, a Revolutionary War hero. After the war Love, his wife and 10 children relocated from their home in what is now part of eastern Tennessee to Haywood County’s Richland Creek area. Love was a wealthy man who had inherited a fortune and worked as a land speculator, lawyer, justice of the peace, surveyor, state senator and clerk of court.

In 1809, Love donated 17 acres for the town of Waynesville, which was where the courthouse, jail and stocks were to be built.

A main street and cross street were plotted, along with a public square and 30 half acre lots. The public square was located at the intersection of Main Street and Cross Street — today known as Church Street on one end and East Street on the other.

The town of Hazelwood, incorporated in 1905, was a town in and of its own right until it merged with Waynesville in 1995.

The tiny town initially housed employees at W.H. Cole’s sawmill, but then grew to contain several industries including a furniture factory, a tannery, and a shoe and boot factory. Houses constructed in the area tend not to have basements, due to a high water table.

Hazelwood is home to the Folkmoot Friendship Center, headquarters of the state’s official international festival, celebrated each year in July. The original downtown area of Hazelwood has its own unique personality and is now home to a small cluster of restaurants, a coffee shop, and specialty retail stores.

Nearby communities include Allens Creek, Hyatt Creek, Balsam and Saunook.

WAYNESVILLE

CANTON The neighboring towns of Canton and Clyde are the bedrock of eastern Haywood County. Canton largely grew up out of service to what is now Evergreen Packaging, a large paper mill on the banks of the Pigeon River. Many of the homes in the area, particularly in downtown Canton, are architectural gems. The tiny but well-designed buildings housed mill workers and managers. The town rose in the early 1900s and was a bustle

of activity Haywood County.

Canton’s downtown buildings are an interesting mix of styles with notable structures such as the Imperial Hotel. Built soon after the railroad reached Canton around 1880, it was originally a private home. Over the years it was advertised as “one of the best commercial hotels of the $2 class in this state,” and in 1918 was renovated to become separate offices, shops and residences. The town’s Main Street Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Just south of Canton is Bethel, a rural community located in an open valley north of the now-famous Cold Mountain. The community provides a rural escape where you’ll also find a local restaurant, gas station, produce stand or home-run business dotting the miles of rolling pasture land tucked in between mountain peaks.

The Blue Ridge Parkway and Pisgah National Forest are easily accessible via U.S. 276 or NC. 215 from Bethel. Cruso is south of Bethel along U.S. 276. The community proclaims itself “Nine miles of friendly people and one old grouch.” There’s even an annual contest to elect the old grouch.

Nearby communities include Beaverdam, Dutch Cove, Hominy, Pigeon, Newfound and Sunburst.

CLYDE Located east of Waynesville and west of Canton, Clyde is largely a residential community with a small central business district. Clyde’s location makes it a great place for commuters with jobs in the region’s larger towns. Clyde is home to Haywood Community College, with its renowned professional crafts program, and Haywood Regional Medical Center, the largest hospital west of Asheville.

The town is also home to what is thought to be the oldest house in Haywood County, the Shook-Smathers Home. Jacob Shook, a Revolutionary War veteran, built the house in 1795.

It began as a log house, but the home’s attic was turned into a large chapel. Today the restored home is a museum.

The township of Clyde officially was formed in 1877 but was not incorporated until 1889.

The town’s boundary forms a perfect circle. It is said that the circle’s midpoint was a knothole in a floorboard of the town’s train station, and from that knothole a geometric circle was drawn and all the area within that circle became part of the town.

Nearby communities include Ratcliff Cove, Stamey Cove and Thickety.

LAKE JUNALUSKA Lake Junaluska is the assembly for the Southeast Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church and home to the World Methodist Council. For many years the Lake was a private community; however, it is now open to the public for walking, jogging, boating, fishing and

swimming in its pool, as well as vacation rentals and dining. Its stone chapel with a lakeside location is a very popular site for weddings.

The lake and surrounding area were created as a Methodist retreat with homesites along the shoreline. The first building constructed at the lake was Shackleford Hall in 1923. It was not finished until the 1950s.

Nearby communities include Crabtree and Iron Duff.

MAGGIE VALLEY The eastern gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Maggie Valley was incorporated as a tourist town, a fact evident by its mix of family restaurants, music and entertainment venues, rental properties and souvenir stores. The town is a bustling center of activity throughout the year and a hotspot for motorcyclists.

Maggie Valley got its name after one of the valley’s 1860s settlers, John Sidney Setzer, realized the town was in need of a post office. No name, no post office, the government said.

Four suggestions were sent to Washington, three of them being Setzer’s daughters’ names — Cora, Mettie and Maggie. Maggie was selected, but it wasn’t until about 1947 that the word “valley” was added. Miss Maggie is still around, portrayed by a volunteer who wears a yellow bonnet, waves to passing cars and appears at festivals.

The Wheels Through Time transportation museum houses what some consider the world’s finest collection of vintage motorcycles, and nearly all of them still run. The museum — which also has a classic car collection — attracts visitors from throughout the world and has been featured in several television specials.

Nearby communities include Dellwood, Jonathan Creek, Hemphill, Ivy Hill, Soco, Rabbit Skin, White Oak and approaching the Tennessee Line, Fines Creek, Harmon’s Den, and Panther Creek.

ment,” Olp recalled. “Every dealer in the nation was sitting in their parts department waiting for that letter. For us, we didn’t get one, but who would’ve thought that could happen in our industry? The thought that your entire franchise could be shutdown and your life’s history, everything you’ve done, just gone.”

But, as with anything in life, the pendulum of success slowly swung back in favor of the automotive industry, with gas prices falling and folks once again using their buying power as a vote of confidence in dealerships across the country. And with the industry finding footing on solid economic ground, Olp felt comfortable enough to seek out his longtime dream of running his own dealership. In 2011, he began

“I remember that first day on the lot. It was a Sunday. We were closed, but there were some folks wandering around and looking around at the selection,” Olp said. “I introduced myself to them, and what they said has stuck with me ever since, which was something I take to heart — ‘mountain people buy from mountain people.’”

But, what Olp and his employees are most proud of is their continued involvement with the “Backpack Program,” an initiative brought to the Waynesville Automotive Group’s atten-

f there is one thing to remember within the Waynesville Automotive Group, owner Van Olp will be the first to remind you.

“It’s the number one priority — take care of the customer,” he said.

Situated behind his desk, mere feet from the large showroom abuzz with salespeople and those interested in purchasing a new vehicle, Olp is watching his longtime vision coming to fruition as he looks outside his office door.

“We don’t say things to people to make extra money or to do repairs that aren’t required,” he said. “It’s about establishing that long-term relationship and reputation with our customers, and with the community.”

Taking over the dealership in September 2011, Olp and his investors saw potential in the property. Formerly the Anton dealership, the company had been run for over 50 years by the Anderson family. And through the usual ups and downs of the national economy, the dealership held steady, something that stuck out to Olp. “They had a built-in clientele,” he said. “They survived every single economic thing thrown at them, which was a great sign for us that this was a place that we could do business, and do business well.”

Growing up in Atlanta, Olp was intrigued by cars, and by dealerships, from an early age. He was raised in a neighborhood where a lot of local dealers resided. They were distinguished, driven and determined to succeed in their endeavors, something that immediately rubbed off on Olp. “I played golf with them, and I liked them, their ambition,” the 46-year-old said. “I liked the success they had achieved, which eventually led me into the automotive industry.”

So, to test the waters of his interest, Olp got a job selling cars between his junior and senior years at Mercer University in Georgia.

“And I liked it, a lot,” he said. “I did really well with it. And after I graduated college (with a degree in business administration), I started selling cars and haven’t done anything else since then.”

Olp continued to work around the Atlanta area, only to relocate to a dealership in Miami in 2004. And for that decade or so, things were going smoothly, with sales numbers rising each year. That was the case, at least until the economic recession of 2007-2008.

“Being from Atlanta, there was quite a lot of growth in the metro area from 1980 all the way until the recession hit,” Olp said. “We didn’t really experience any of the ups and downs that happen in the economy as time goes along.”

But the economic downturn of 2008 was different, especially in terms of the automotive industry. With the explosion in popularity of trucks and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) in recent decades, Americans found themselves in quite the pickle with rising gas prices, companies heading overseas, and a lack of employment opportunities, something that directly affected the auto giants like General Motors (GM) and Chrysler.

“GM was sending out letters of termination to dealerships at that time. They’d send a FedEx envelope with the letter to the parts depart-

“I was trying to figure out the next chapter of my life,” Olp said. “I couldn’t find what I was looking for. But, then I found this dealership in Waynesville. I’d taken my family up here to go skiing, and also traveled around Western North Carolina before. Then, a co-worker in Miami mentioned how his father had a house here, and how great Waynesville was.”

Olp was sold. With the purchase of the Waynesville dealership, it was full steam ahead, to where the company now has eight locations, which includes Waynesville Chevrolet Buick, Waynesville Chrysler Dodge Jeep, and the Auto Star Family Dealerships (Waynesville, Canton,

The “Backpack Program” provides a backpack full of food every Friday for children to take home for the weekend that might not otherwise have access to a meal. As of 2015, the program sends over 400 kids in Haywood County home with those backpacks. Each employee at the Waynesville Automotive Group contributes between $1 and $20 a week to the program, with the dealership itself matching all donations.

“It’s just part of being in a community,” Olp said. “Every business should pick a project or organization to get behind and give back to their community. For us, we can’t help everybody, but we sure can do our best through the ‘Backpack Program.’”

Now entering his 25th year of being in the automotive industry, Olp reflected on his time and passion for his profession.

“This is what I’ve wanted to do since day one — own a dealership,” he said. “And to do it here in Haywood County is great, especially to raise our family here. Miami is a fast town where it’s about what you have, where here it’s about who you are — that’s what I like about living here.”

also, most importantly, always looking for way to connect into other aspects of the local business sector.

“Personally, what I hope is that our customers that come in also check out the rest of what our community has to offer,” Williams said. “Go get a sandwich at Panacea Coffeehouse next door, or try the other breweries in town — BearWaters, Boojum, and Tipping Point. I want to see all these folks coming in and enjoying all the great things we have here.”

The brewery thrives on giving back to the community. They allow events to be held at their facility for no cost, and have hosted numerous charities, including the Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation, Women of Waynesville, Toys for Tots, and Fitness for Kids. Williams is on the board for Sarge’s and also Haywood Waterways, two positions he looks to as a way to connect all corners of Haywood County.

“Being on these boards, I aim to try and bring more and more younger people within the community to the table,” Williams said.

“They are the next generation of community involvement. What’s just as important as acquiring knowledge is also the idea of sharing that knowledge with others. We need to work together for the greater good of the community, and that also includes incorporating young entrepreneurs.”

The company also routinely gives spent grain away to area farmers and buys local hops whenever available (which also includes local ingredients for their brews like apples, honey and peppers).

“I think the ‘go local’ aspect is a better wing of craft brewing. You’re not going to get any fresher beer than beer made in Haywood County, and if we can get local products to make it, then it just comes full circle,” Williams said.

Reflecting on his own heritage growing up and residing in Haywood County, Williams feels these up-and-coming breweries are only going to be a catalyst for the culture and tradition unique to the Great Smoky Mountains.

“I think that heritage mentality goes from the tobacco grower to the moonshiner, being proud of something and making a product to support their families,” he said. “I like that Bryson City can claim they have a brewery, Sylva can claim three, Waynesville can claim they have four. It’s almost retrograding back to the days when every town had a brewery.”

Relaxing into his seat on the brewery’s back patio, overlooking nearby Richland Creek, Williams points to the middle of the backyard space. He noted that there are plans in the works already to build a live music stage with the river as the background, with the people and celebratory nature of the property as the foreground.

It’s just another idea amid countless others that keeps Williams excited for each new day as a business owner in Haywood County.

“For us, and for all other business in our community, there’s always room to grow and room for improvement,” he said. “We’re all in this together, where together we succeed and individually we will fail.”

tepping out onto the back porch patio of Frog Level Brewing Company in downtown Waynesville, owner/brewer Clark Williams — a Haywood County native — takes a seat and thinks for a moment on a question posed to him.

What does it mean to be named “Entrepreneur of the Year”?

“The award is obviously an honor,” he said modestly. “But, it’s also something that shows me more about the community and other businesses around here besides breweries, in that, it’s not rocket science in starting and running a business. It comes down to a few key things to remember. It’s about being good to the people and the community, about giving back, and keeping in mind all the other businesses that play into your success — that never-ending circle of life and community that’s always spinning.”

And yet, for a brewery honing in on its fiveyear anniversary later in 2016, where does the word “entrepreneur” fit in? Once you dive a little deeper into Frog Level Brewing and what they’re doing, you’ll see. In their first year, Frog Level Brewing had a 300-barrel output, which has now gone over 1,200 barrels for 2015. The brewery has not only brought on more employees (including new brewmaster Matt Norman, an A-B Tech craft beer education graduate), it has also installed more equipment, gradually shifting from a three-barrel brewing system to a six-barrel, and from 10-barrel fermenters to 20-barrel.

“It’s been a slow burn,” Williams said. “I’m not going to try and do leaps and bounds, not to try and recreate the wheel. We’re just going to keep adding equipment, people and brands to our brewery.”

Last year, the brewery partnered with a statewide distributor to spread the taste of Waynesville and greater Haywood County around North Carolina and out of state.

“We’re in 70 out of 100 counties in North Carolina, and also in Greenville, Columbia and Spartanburg, South Carolina,” Williams said.

Beloved theatre opens new stage itting on a bench one recent sunny afternoon, Steven Lloyd gazes to his right, a big smile immediately rolling across his face.

“When I look over there, I see potential — a lot of potential,” he said.

Executive director for the Haywood Arts Regional Theatre in Waynesville, Lloyd is situated underneath the large awning of the 10,000square-foot building. To his right, numerous construction workers are putting the final touches on the brand new second stage structure, the Daniel & Belle Fangmeyer Theatre, which sits proudly mere feet from its older sibling.

“It’s the potential for a lot of concert events, theatre events, community events, outdoor events with people sitting on the hillside, and the restaurant, which will make it possible for people to come and eat before a show,” he said.

“This new stage will catapult our theatre into one of the best production companies in the Southeast.”

The 9,000-square-foot second stage (with around a 140 person capacity) has been years in the making. Breaking ground in 2014, the building is expected to open to the public in the latter half of 2016. Of the $1.2 million price tag, HART was able to raise around $1 million of that through the generous support of many

longtime donors and supporters along with a few new ones.

“The more people you have, the better off you are,” Lloyd said. “The truth is that you’re building a foundation of support. All of those people who have given thousands of dollars all the way down to $10, whether it’s large or small, are invested in what you’re trying to do, so you’ve got this army of people behind you.”

Lloyd pointed to the fact of how strong the foundation of the theatre is — in its vision and its run of sold-out productions — which gives supporters a piece of mind in knowing just what their donations are going toward.

“People like giving to things that are stable, and all along I’ve been clear that this is my home and I don’t want to go anywhere else,” he said. “You’re building a legacy and people have faith in what you say, and know you’ll stick around to follow through with it.”

And stick around he has. At 62, Lloyd has been executive director of the theatre for the last 26 years. As part of a (now defunct) statewide initiative (Edwin Gill Theatre Project) that brought plays and productions to every school district every year, Lloyd came to Western North Carolina as a visiting artist at Haywood Community College. At that time (1990), HART was being run out of The Strand

“HART didn’t really have anybody running it that knew how to run a theatre. They kind of went from show to show without any real planning,” Lloyd said. “We were in The Strand until 1993, when the fire marshal kicked us out because the building was not up to code and we were just renting the space. We moved to HCC and started fundraising for the new building [which was opened in 1997].”

In the decades since the current building opened, HART has proven itself not only an artistic hub of Western North Carolina, but also an economic driver for Waynesville and greater Haywood County. With a $2.5 million a year impact on the local economy, HART continues to grow, physically and financially, which is due in no small part to Lloyd’s day-in-day-out vigor to put his theatre on the national map.

It’s been very slow, very consistent, and we’ve proven that we’re good for the economy of the community. We make money for everybody.

We have a lot of tourists that come here and are drawn to the theatre. They spend the night here, eat here, and spend a lot more money here — we’ve been able to make the economic argument that the arts are good for business.�

A top-notch theater, though, does not necessarily ensure financial viability. Sure, you might have captivating productions hit the stage, but how do you get people in the door, how do you keep the books and costs balanced in order to ensure a future? “I’m a very good businessman. My grandfather owned a carnival, so I grew up in a carnival family,� Lloyd smiled. “I was kind of like ‘Toby Tyler’ as a kid growing up, and that meant every night we were sitting down and counting money. I grew up in the business side of show business. I also never got seduced into expecting a lot of grants and government support. I’ve always operated this theater by promoting ideas and productions that can pay for themselves. Any project we take on has to pay for itself, anything from the town and state is extra, but we’re not dependent on it, which helps us when cuts are made at those government levels.� With the second stage just weeks away from opening, Lloyd is looking forward to the new space and what it will bring, in terms of productions and opportunities, one of which being the creation of a youth drama program. And yet, one wonders, after 26 years and counting at the helm, if Lloyd is getting ready to hand off the torch to the next generation of HART. He chuckled at the query. “God willing, I expect I’ll still be doing this in 10 years. I have no desire to retire — this is what I love to do,� he said. “And I’m looking forward to getting a bigger staff as we grow financially, so then I’ll have a little more freedom to come and go and not be locked into being here 60 hours a week, with rehearsals every evening, shows every weekend. I don’t know what I’d do with myself if I didn’t have this place, and I think I’ll always feel that way.�

and began working once again at Junaluska Animal Hospital. But, this time around, he wasn’t cleaning out cages; rather he was right in the heat of the moment, performing surgeries and making sure local pets and farm animals received proper, professional care.

“Nowadays, I’ve been doing it for so long it becomes rote,” Synder said. “When you first get out of school you’re trying to build up your confidence level and scope of experience, it can be very gut-wrenching and stressful, where now, even if the adrenaline is pumping, you can do it a lot more calmly because you know exactly what to do.”

Snyder also noted how he’s not just performing surgery on an animal because in many cases he’s performing surgery on a beloved member of a family. “I understand that connection between pets and their owners because I feel the same way about my own pets,” he said.

With the Junaluska Animal Hospital celebrating 55 years in 2017, Snyder is proud to be the torchbearer of its founder, the late Dr. Mack Setzer. In recent years, the business has added Haywood Animal Emergency, which offers late night care to animals, something that was pretty much nonexistent around rural Western North Carolina.

The emergency clinic is open once the hospital closes, and until midnight, with an overnight technician onsite until they reopen in the morning to watch over patients and also mediate any twilight concerns or emergencies (with the Regional Emergency Animal Care Hospital, or “REACH,” in Asheville also right down the road, too).

On top of his medical duties, Snyder is also

fter over three decades of work, veterinarian Dr. Bill Snyder has seen it all. But, it’s never ceases to amaze him what comes through the door.

“Everyday is different, everyday is a new challenge,” he said.

And it also is a profession that means the world to Snyder, the act of being able to help animals in need of medical attention.

“Because animals can’t tell you what hurts and what ails them. That’s why we’re called the pediatricians of the animal field,” he added.

In his operating room at the Junaluska Animal Hospital on Old Asheville Highway in Waynesville, Snyder is a fourth-generation Haywood County native. Growing up on a farm, he had a love for animals from an early age.

“My dad raised cattle, and there were cats and dogs all around our farm,” he reminisced.

“I’ve always been around animals.”

While in junior high, Snyder decided he wanted to pursue a life in medicine. Thus, one day, he went up to the old Haywood County hospital and inquired about a getting a job there, anything that would get his foot in the door for experience and guidance in his potential career path.

“They said I was too young and to come back when I was 18,” Snyder chuckled. “Then I came down to the Junaluska Animal Hospital, which was a lot smaller in size and in staff than it is now. They hired me, and I worked here sweeping the floors and cleaning out the cages.”

After graduating high school, Snyder went to N.C. State and then on to Auburn University for his veterinarian accreditation. Following his post-operative work at Texas A&M, Snyder returned to Haywood County in the early 1970s

High atop the Smokies The Swag Country Inn eading west on Hemphill Road, mere minutes from downtown Maggie Valley, the curvy road snakes deeper and deeper into the majestic Great Smoky Mountains. Art on Depot Studio & Gallery

t’s another bluebird sky day in Haywood County. As bustling cars and people meander around the historic Frog Level district of Waynesville, many are passing to and fro by the large bay windows of the Art on Depot Studio & Gallery. Stepping into the space, a lone figure is tucked in the back of the long shotgun style room.

It’s potter Cathey Bolton, and in this moment, she’s tapping into her creative zen.

“Art is something I have always loved,” she said. “I need to do it.”

Sitting behind her potter’s wheel (the same one she had from college), Bolton is a symbol of artistic fulfillment coupled with a keen business sense. It’s one thing to be able to create a work of art, but it can often be a completely different ballgame in terms of being able to market your wares. For Bolton, it’s about combining artwork with a practical use, like unique coffee mugs or one-of-a-kind plates and jewelry.

“You open up your cabinet everyday and say, ‘What mood am I in?’” she said. “As an artist, your fingerprints, physically and emotionally,

are on every single piece. So, it’s about you as the artist, and as the person purchasing it, to have that relationship with these objects — and I love that I can give that to people.”

It’s been a long and, somewhat, winding road for Bolton. Growing up in Raleigh on a 100-acre property, she found herself outside, amid and immersed in nature, all the while surrounded by the curiosity and artistic flare within her relatives that sparked her own eventual passions.

Following her junior year in high school, she took summer classes at the North Carolina School of the Arts (Winston-Salem). It was there she was encouraged by her teachers to stay and spend her senior year at the school.

She did, all the while diving deep into a gamut of artistic mediums.

“Out of nowhere, I not only found this love for art, but I also just dropped everything and went to art school,” Bolton chuckled. “It was a huge change in such a short period of time, but I think that’s how my life rolls.”

Graduating from the School of the Arts in 1991, Bolton studied visual arts at Eastern Car-

olina University (Greenville). Following college, she took off for the West Coast, eventually landing in sunny San Diego. She lived right in downtown with a handful of other artists. With their garage as a studio, the bunch would open up the big door for the public to come in and partake in their creativity, perhaps even take a piece of work home.

“I was doing pottery and teaching classes,” Bolton said. “But it came time to do something else, and I’ve always been drawn to the mountains.”

Though she hails from Raleigh, Bolton has plenty of family in Haywood County, a place she visited often as a kid. Not to mention her aunt is Grace Cathey, a renowned metal and sculpture artist in her own right. At the end of 2001, Bolton headed for Waynesville. She worked at Highwater Clays in Asheville for several years before saving up enough money to purchase all the equipment she needed to open her own business.

“In Haywood County, we have everything, from plenty of family-owned farms to larger grazing farms, all the way down to homesteaders growing their own produce — it’s all here, and all thriving.” she said.

As project coordinator for Buy Haywood, an agricultural initiative that connects farmers, businesses and consumers around the county, Masciarelli is at the forefront of a new era, one where longtime traditional farmers are joining forces with a deep and vested interest in farm-to-table food and eco-friendly techniques.

“It’s a big economic indicator to me when really young, energetic and smart people see farming as an economic revival for their, and our, future,” she said. “Older farmers are looking to retire and now a whole new generation of young families and folks are taking over the land and continuing that agricultural outlook.”

Currently, there are over 700 farms in Haywood County, all totaling some 56,000 acres of lush, vibrant land and soil. And since it originated in 2007, Buy Haywood noted that the number of existing farms has not only stabilized, it’s actually growing, with an ever-evolving interest in

homesteading. In short, people want to eat fresh, and also want to know exactly where their food is coming from.

“When we started out, we made a big push to get two crops into the local grocery stores — tomatoes and peppers. And there is just no substitute for freshly picked produce, either from your garden or from the farm right down the road,” Masciarelli said. “And now? Just take a look at Ingles Markets, where there’s dozens and dozens of local and regional farms represented in the produce section with hundreds of products available.”

Buy Haywood also prides itself in partnering with numerous other groups and organizations, from several farmer’s markets and tailgates, all the way up to the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project (ASAP), which oversees Western North Carolina and beyond in terms of farmers and consumers.

“It’s about knowing we’re on to something,” Masciarelli said. “We’re connecting every corner of our community, and also breathing life into our local economy.”

“As an adult woman, I realize how lucky and privileged I was to grow up around all of this,” she smiled. “Not everyone had room to roam and a dog at their side, or trotted behind my grandfather as he planted seeds in the rows of soil, or got to go out and pick heirloom tomatoes to have for our homemade biscuits for breakfast.

Those experiences really shaped my palette as to what real food is, and what it should taste like.”

Masciarelli pointed to the $22-milliona-year impact local farms and agriculture has on the economy, where the products and their producers come full circle in their vision and intent.

“You have folks like Heidi Dunkelberg who grows hops at her H&K Hops Farm, who then sells her hops to Clark Williams at Frog Level Brewing, who then sells his beer to Jessica DeMarco at Copper Pot & Wooden Spoon, who then uses the beer in her jams and jellies, who then sells those products back to Heidi, who uses Jessica’s products to spread on her homemade biscuits at Heidi’s Coffee Cup Café,” she smiled. “And then, too, you have all the spent grains from the brewery that get picked up by local farmers to feed their pigs and sheep — it’s all one big circle, and all within our community.”

The Colonial Theatre is the cultural crown jewel of blue-collar Canton’s downtown.

One could hit a golf ball from the theatre’s parking lot and hit the nearby Evergreen Packaging paper mill—the economic heartbeat of Canton. The two entities are vital bookends for the town, and the Colonial has been a catalyst for positive change.

“When you start tracing the recovery of a small town, it usually centers around entertainment,” said Town Alderman Zeb Smathers.

“And for us, that starts with the Colonial—we want people to believe that small towns like us can bounce back.”

Built in 1932, the theatre has remained a beacon of culture and pride ever since. Although it did fall into disrepair in past decades (with a renovation in 1992), a push in the early 2000s brought the old building back to life. It has withstood several economic declines and a devastating flood in 2004, only to remain a place of curiosity and possibility.

“The Colonial has an ambiance and intimate charm that creates an indelible experience for visitors in the likes of the famed Fox theatres,” said Canton Town Manager Seth Hendler-Voss.

In 2000, it was listed on the Register of National Historic Places and also nominated for a “Momentum Award” by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2014. The IBMA nomination comes as a result of innumerable shows at the Colonial by Haywood County’s beloved musical sons Balsam Range. The bluegrass group, who won the 2014 IBMA “Entertainer of the Year” award, has called the theatre home for its highly successful Winter Concert Series the last five years. Headlining each sold out show, the band also uses the series to show-

“Being in the Colonial, a smaller venue of 300 folks, presents a very intimate setting for our concerts, which gives off a very special vibe that radiates throughout the building—there’s not a bad seat in the house,” said Caleb Smith, guitarist for Balsam Range.

Held every first Saturday of the month, from January through April, the series brings together musical friends of Balsam Range. Acclaimed performers like country star John Driskell Hopkins (Zac Brown Band) to Canadian folk sensation The Sweet Lowdown hit the stage, where each partakes and shares in the universal language — music.

“It’s a homecoming event for us. We love using the facility because of its incredible sound, the feel of the room, how nice it is, and its wonderful history,” said Darren Nicholson, mandolinist for Balsam Range. “And I’ve learned that the community has started to count on it year after year as well. From day one, the series has always been about quality — quality guests, quality venue. And we’re very proud of that.”

And alongside the world-class talent, what remains at the series’ core is Balsam Range.

Rising into the upper echelon of bluegrass music over the last few years, the band took home the 2015 IBMA for “Song of the Year” (“Moon Over Memphis”) and “Vocal Group of the Year” (second year in a row), with Tim Surrett being named “Bassist of the Year.” Surrett was also named the head of the Board of Directors for the IBMAs, a position that not only will expand the reach of the genre, but also brighten the spotlight the band has placed on the Colonial.

February 2016 Cataloochee Valley Tours The mission at Cataloochee Valley Tours in Waynesville is to provide memorable naturebased eco-tours for all their guests by utilizing responsible and environmentally friendly business practices. They offer three tours — Evening Elk Eco-Tours (year-round), Spring Birding and Wildflower Hikes (April/May), and Synchronous Firefly Night Walks (June).

The hospital has 930 employees and 150 physicians.

Into the great wide open Haywood County offers a unique quality of life. Its mix of small-town attributes, cultural amenities and outdoor recreation make it a truly special place to call home or to visit. And it is surrounded by many special places that attract travelers from across the country. Here are few of the highlights that are either in Haywood or nearby: The Great Smoky Mountains National Park’s Cataloochee Valley History and nature intersect in this picturesque meadow, a long, narrow valley cradled by mountains on all sides that was once a thriving pioneer community that was part of Haywood County.

An elk herd has been re-introduced into the park and calls the valley home. Elk were once common here but were overhunted in the early 1800s to extinction in the eastern states. Elk can be seen on most days, and the best time for viewing is in the early mornings or the early evenings.

Cataloochee Valley is also home to intact farm houses, churches, schoolhouse and cemeteries that can be toured by car and short walks. There are several hiking trails that start in the valley, and it is also a favored location for trout anglers.

From Maggie Valley, take U.S. 276 north toward I-40, but just before the interstate, turn left on Cove Creek Road, which leads up and over the Cataloochee Divide and winds down into the valley. Beware the narrow, gravel road.

Oconaluftee Visitor Center Along with knowledgeable rangers who can help you plan your time in the park, fabulous exhibits will take you back in time among the early settlers and Cherokee who called these mountains home.

The visitor center chronicles the culture and history of the Smokies and is also a great starting point for anyone visiting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Located on U.S. 441 at the North Carolina entrance to the park, just outside of Cherokee and a few hundred yards from the southern terminus of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The Blue Ridge Parkway The Blue Ridge Parkway is perhaps America’s most scenic byway, a ribbon of sweeping curves and stunning vistas stretching 469 miles from Cherokee to Virginia that stretches from one end of Haywood County to another.

It’s hard to get lost on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It only goes in two directions — north or south. Short, wooden posts along the edge of the road mark off each mile, making it easy to

know exactly where you are. The milemarker number is listed for the recommended stops on the Parkway and should be easy to find by watching the mileposts.

Shining Rock Wilderness One of the original components of the Wilderness System created in September 1964, it is the largest designated wilderness area in North Carolina and is located entirely in Haywood County.

Purchase Knob The Appalachian Highland Science Learning Center at Purchase Knob is on 535 acres in Haywood County that is contiguous with the rest of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The site includes a historic cabin, two buildings which contain offices, laboratory space, a 50-person classroom, and housing for up to eight visiting scientists. The center averages about 5,000 visiting scientists, students and teachers each year. Everyday, the staff and program participants thank the family for their generous gift. Beautiful spot for hiking with great views.

100-Year Anniversary of National Parks 2016 will mark the centennial of the legislation that led to the creation of our national parks system, and right here in the Smokies are the two most-visited units of the system, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Waterfalls Waterfalls have long had an almost spiritual appeal among humans, and there are plenty in and around Haywood County. Whether one is an avid outdoorsman or an occasional hiker, there is something special about making a gorgeous waterfall the destination for a hike.

There are hundreds of waterfalls in Western North Carolina, and there is a fairly extensive list and an interactive map on The Smoky Mountain News website at www.smokymountainnews.com (navigate to the Outdoors section to find it).

The following waterfalls are just a few of the more popular near Haywood:

Soco Falls Soco Falls is the closest large fall to Maggie Valley. Two creeks flow over steep rock cascades at a right angle from each other. There’s a wooden platform that faces the higher of the two falls. The other falls is nearly impossible to see face on without going down to the base of the falls. There’s a really steep dirt incline that goes down there without a lot to hold on to. I’ve never gotten the guts to slide down – especially with my camera.

From Maggie Valley, drive north on U.S. 19.

You’ll pass under the Blue Ridge Parkway. After passing the Blue Ridge Parkway, drive 1.4 miles to a pull off on the left.

A short, steep path goes down between the guardrails. Follow the trail, which leads to a wooden platform.

Midnight Hole There’s not much of a waterfall at Midnight Hole, but if you’re looking for a good place to jump in the water, this is it.

Midnight Hole is very popular and crowded at times. Swimmers can jump off the rocks into the pool. The water is cold and crystal clear and feels wonderful after the hike on a hot, muggy afternoon.

Take I-40 Exit 451 in Tennessee. It will be the first exit after you cross the state line. Stay left after crossing the Pigeon River and follow the road 2 miles. You’ll drive by a power plant and community park. You’ll come to a stop sign at an intersection. Go straight through the intersection and enter the Big Creek section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Follow the gravel road 0.8 miles to a picnic area and campground entrance.

From the parking area, walk back up the road. You’ll see a sign on the left for the trailhead.

The hike to Midnight Hole is about 1.5 miles. Stay on the main path and the hole is on the left.

The hike is easy. Horses and their riders also frequent the trail.

Waterfall on West Fork Pigeon River The waterfall on West Fork Pigeon River runs under an old stone bridge on N.C. 215. Although this waterfall isn’t one to plan a trip around, if you’re driving on N.C. 215, it’s worth a stop. You can take shots from the road and the bridge but watch out for traffic.

The waterfall is under a bridge on N.C. 215, 4.2 miles from where N.C. 215 crosses the Blue Ridge Parkway. It’s 13.6 miles south of where N.C. 215 intersects with U.S. 276.

Whitewater Nantahala The Nantahala River is a world-class paddling adventure. No experience is necessary to climb on board a raft with an outfitter and take a guided trip down the pristine rapids of the Nanty.

The Nantahala has been called everyman’s river. It is an 8-mile run of basically Class II rapids (19 of them) with Class III Nantahala Falls waiting at the end. There is a slalom course on the river at the Nantahala Outdoor Center as well as “the wave” for playboaters. It is a wonderful river for rafting and beginner kayakers. Several outfitters on the river allow raft rentals without guides, and they’ll also shuttle you to the put-in.

Pigeon The Pigeon River, which flows through Haywood County, boasts Class IV and Class III rapids along with easygoing sections for a varied whitewater experience with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as a backdrop. The Pigeon has scheduled releases from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, providing a shorter but exciting trip. A number of outfitters are located in Hartford, Tennessee.

Fishing The waterways in the Smoky Mountains attract trout fishermen from around the world, and it’s no wonder. Whether you’re in search of native brook trout or trophy-sized browns, you can find just the right river to make it happen.

Western North Carolina recently hosted the World Fly Fishing championships, and the Fly Fishing Museum of the Southern Appalachians just opened recently in nearby Cherokee.

In Haywood County, places like Cataloochee Valley or the Pisgah National Forest offer miles of backcountry streams. Easily accessible streams like Richland Creek and Jonathan Creek are also popular for those without the time or inclination to venture into the backcountry.

Sunburst Climb A fun ride with little climbing as you pedal deep into the woods west of Canton. On your return, you will pass by numerous farms as you loop back via Lovejoy Road and all too soon find yourself back at Canton’s Rec Park. Ride begins at the Canton Recreation Park on Penland Street/N.C. 215 in Canton. Parking, sheltered picnic tables, and restrooms available.

Cold Mountain Loop

Haywood County is gaining popularity as a place for runners, cyclists, and others who like to participate in endurance sports.

The Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual Gateway to the Smokies Half Marathon every May and the Blue Ridge Breakaway Bicycle Ride in August. The half marathon starts on Waynesville’s scenic Main Street and winds through town, and through rural mountain areas before ending in the historic Frog Level district. The Blue Ridge Breakaway includes four different distances including two that take in large sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Also, every August Haywood County hosts the Lake Logan Multisports Festival, a series of biathlons and triathlons of varying distances. Competitors from across the country have made this one of the region’s most popular racing events.

The rural Bethel community hosts the Bethel Half Marathon every October, a relatively flat mountain half marathon that is among the most scenic races in the region.

This route takes you up the Pigeon River Valley and past Lake Logan for a long climb to stunning views from the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are 12 miles on the Parkway before you drop sharply as you return on U.S. 276. Pedal through the Cruso community and along the East Fork of the Pigeon River back to your starting point. Park at the Blue Demon Ball Park of the Bethel Middle School on Poindexter Road/N.C. 215 on the north side of the field — bathrooms in building near walking track and bleachers. (44.7 miles, strong intermediate and above)

Hyder Mountain Loop Head into the country on a well-shouldered road, passing by the Pigeon River. Once over I-40 continue down the river valley until it is time to climb Hyder Mountain. Most of the climb is conquered in the first half-mile with views that will reward your effort. Soon enough your on the twisting descent to another crossing of the Pigeon River. Then it’s just a left turn and a right turn back to your bike carrier. Ride begins at Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church on Old Clyde Road (N.C. 209) in Lake Junaluska, N.C. Park in the gravel area next to the Fire Department across from the church. (9.9 miles, for intermediate and above)

Skiing and Winter Fun Traditionally one of the earliest ski resorts in the Southeast to open and one of the last to close, Cataloochee Ski Area in Maggie Valley has 18 slopes and trails, 740 feet of vertical drop at an elevation of 5,400 feet, and unmatched snowmaking capabilities. Winter Hiking and Crosscountry Skiing With more than 800 miles of trails in the nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park and hundreds of miles more in the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests and the Shining Rock Wilderness Area, Haywood County is a hiker’s paradise. Many winter days have temperatures in the high 50s, and with all the leaves gone from the trees, every winter hike offers views that just don’t exist during the more popular summer and fall seasons. Whether it’s the popular Sam’s Knob hike in Shining Rock or a section of the Appalachian Trail in the GSMNP, getting outdoors in winter can be an exhilarating experience. Also, the Blue Ridge Parkway and many national forest trails are great for crosscountry skiing after being blanketed by a winter snow.

Walking & Hiking Simply getting outside is one of the favorite pastimes for people in Western North Carolina, whether that’s a pleasant walk along a greenway or a strenuous hike up a mountain.

Greenways and walking trails are easy to find in Haywood County and often take you along beautiful creeks and waterways. Here’s a quick list of the most popular walking areas:

Haywood County and particularly downtown Waynesville are home to dozens of galleries featuring a variety of fine art and crafts. The first Friday of every month from May through December is Art After Dark in downtown Waynesville, with galleries staying open late with working artists available to discuss and demonstrate their work. www.downtownwaynesville.com.

World Methodist Museum This museum on the grounds of Lake Junaluska — the headquarters for the Southeastern Jurisdiction of the Methodist Church and the home of the World Methodist Council — tells the story of the United Methodism from its beginnings with John Wesley and its history in the United States. 828.456.9432

If a greenway is too tame, then there are certainly hikes of all levels in and around the wilderness areas of Haywood County. Here are a few of our favorites:

■ Boogerman Trail — This 3.8-mile loop hike in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park takes you past old growth hemlocks and Robert “Booger” Palmer’s home place (hence the name). There’s plenty of creek views and wildflowers.

Nearly a mile in, you’ll see a sing for Boogerman Trail. To avoid a relentless and steep climb, continue further up Caldwell Fork Trail and take the upper loop of Boogerman Trail. The hike begins near the Cataloochee campground.

Drive past the campground about 500 feet and park next to the footbridge. This is an unofficial parking area and fills up quickly on the weekends. You may have to park on the road. Easy.

■ Hemphill Bald — The Loop hike at Hemphill Bald is 13.7 miles in total, but just 4.7 miles in will get you to the Bald.

The bald was named after a pioneer family. From the Blue Ridge Parkway intersection with U.S. 19 in Maggie Valley go South on the Parkway toward the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. At milepost 458.2 turn right on Heintooga Ridge Road. Continue for approximately 6 miles to the trailhead at Polls Gap. Medium.

■ Mount Sterling Gap Trail — This low ridge trail begins at Mt. Sterling Gap on Cataloochee-Big Creek Road. It’s only 2.8 miles to the firetower, but is rated extremely strenuous because of a 2,000-foot climb in 2.3 miles along an old jeep trail to the ridge just below the firetower. This firetower is one of three remaining in the Park. There are several excellent lookouts from the trail prior to reaching the main ridge, but the view from the tower is unequalled in the Park. The view includes the Pigeon River Gorge (below), the Unaka Mountains, the main ridge of the Smokies, the Black Mountains (east), and the end of the Southern Appalachians. The peak is a crossroads with trails leading up from Cataloochee, Baxter Creek, and Pretty Hollow Gap Trail, which is 14 miles in and of itself. The Sterling Gap trailhead is located on N.C. 284 at Mt. Sterling Gap. Difficult.
