Welcome

‘Oofing’ not allowed…. Well, here we are and half way through the year and as you’d possibly expect it’s time for some more of the old clichés: where has the year gone? Time definitely goes faster the older you get… a constant reminder that life races by (and therefore to enjoy it as much as you possibly can). Although we’re not at retirement’s door, age creeps up on us in very subtle ways. As many of us do, the other half and I work hard at maintaining the image that we’re still ‘with it’. Weight watching, exercise, hair, clothes, makeup (not him I hasten to add), and a witch’s cauldron of pills and potions in the bathroom cabinet. Still, I realised we were both doing something that was completely giving the game away. This is something that children never do, nor even 20 or 30 or 40 year olds. It’s ‘oofing’. ‘Oof ’ is the noise that you make when you sit down. Or stand up. Or bend over, lift something heavy up or put it down, get into the car or get out. And if that’s not bad enough, broadcasting one’s ailments tells all: the bad back, sore hips, and the dodgy shoulder (most of which

19

have been acquired as a result of exercise – I thought it was supposed to be good for you?). Clearly we aren’t kidding anyone. So, for all of us chasing eternal youth, it’s time to suck it in. Yes it hurts and you’ve lost flexibility, but there’s no need to remind the world of it! Congratulations to Amanda Flanagan who was the winner of our £100 cash competition last issue. Have a look at page 6 for details on how to enter this time. As always there’s plenty of community events in our What’s On pages so please see if there’s anything of interest to you. Do let me know if you are aware of any community groups or events – we promote them free of charge to thousands of local residents. Until next time, no 'oofing allowed!

Recipe

Lemon & Almond

Sandwich Cookies Serves 10 Ready in 40 minutes, plus chilling and cooling

These delightful crisp and buttery lemon and almond cookies have a tangy layer of lemon curd in the middle.

115g unsalted butter, softened kling 115g caster sugar, plus extra for sprin 1 tsp almond extract 1 large egg yolk ing 200g plain flour, plus extra for dust Milk, for sealing and glazing 2-3 tbsp good quality lemon curd 2 tbsp flaked almonds

18

1. Place the butter, sugar and almond extract in a mixing bowl and beat with a hand-held electric whisk until pale and fluffy. Beat in the egg yolk then gradually beat in the flour to form a crumbly dough. 2. Gather the dough with your hands and knead lightly until smooth. Wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes, or until firm. 3. Line a baking sheet with baking paper. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to 2mm thick. Using a 7cm round fluted cookie cutter, stamp out 20 rounds, re-rolling the dough as necessary. Place on the baking sheets and chill in the fridge for 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 190°C, fan 170°C, gas mark 5. 4. Lightly brush around the edge of half the cookie dough rounds with a little milk. Drop ½ tsp of lemon curd in the centre of these rounds. Carefully top with the rest of the cookie dough rounds, gently pressing to seal the edges. 5. Glaze the tops lightly with milk and sprinkle with the extra caster sugar and flaked almonds. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until pale golden. Leave to cool completely on the baking sheets for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely. TIP Replace the lemon curd with jam, marmalade or chocolate hazelnut spread for a change of flavour. Remember the filling will be very hot straight out of the oven, so be sure to leave to cool completely before tucking in!

Unwidow

A final admission of Defeat. Times they are A-changing! Not so long ago, probably the day before yesterday? I taught my grandchildren their numbers, colours, nursery rhymes, good manners and copperplate handwriting, and because they were visiting from their home in Dubai, I also told them what those ‘funny long boxes’ all over my house were for when they visited England for the first time. There is no need for Central Heating radiators in Dubai, and they were fascinated that these funny boxes would know what time of day it was, and suddenly start to get warm! How smart they thought Nanna Jackie was to be able to impart this invaluable knowledge to these boxes, from another, smaller box in the cupboard. This convinced them that anything Nan was teaching them, must be good to know! Therefore, they listened attentively to everything I had to say…and I became the font of all knowledge! Nevertheless, they would occasionally check if the boxes had remembered to get warm, by checking them out at the appropriate times, possibly to consider ‘snitching’ on them if they forgot… Children can be quite competitive, and I do believe they were determined to catch them out, one day. However, my status now seems to have diminished. Without warning these avid members of my fan club, began to overtake my understanding of modern mathematics, and the songs I taught them were replaced in their affection by some other kind of ‘music’ which was quite beyond me! Raucous, tuneless cacophonies began to drown out my call to them that breakfast was ready, and it was time to get up, take a shower and start the day, and I was reminded that ‘Three Blind Mice’ was not at all acceptable. These rodents were Visually Impaired, and should be referred to as such. Somehow, this does not fit in with the rhythm of the song, does it! TV, which I had limited to half an hour before dinner, suddenly was ‘on’ most of the day, competing with their ‘music’, as they kept up with the latest reality shows at the same time!

The little girl, who was happy once to colour in pictures we had drawn together, now began to colour in her face! What is more, she did it well…and the beautiful woman that she has become began to emerge. Now she watches her weight, whilst I watch QI and Eggheads! The little boy who made models from bits of plastic, became a lot more interested in the ‘workings’ of cameras, computers and other such mysteries to me. And he became pretty good at it! (However, now based in UK he has learned the real value of those ‘little boxes’, during English winters) and mercifully instead of being dragged kicking and screaming for a haircut, he now sports a designer beard and the sharpest haircut known to man (or woman) So there you have it, that little girl is now a successful model and the little boy a very busy and successful Film Maker which leaves this font of all knowledge somewhat wanting in useful contribution to their education! The ‘embarrassment roles’ have been reversed. Whilst I used to take great pains to ensure they behaved well in front of my friends and colleagues, I must now be careful not to misbehave, or embarrass them in front of theirs! They now teach me how technology works, and they probably sussed years ago that I was never quite the font of all knowledge that I thought I was! Never mind! They are following their dreams, and we ‘like’ each other’s posts on Facebook, so I’m Cool With it, because they are still mine…really

Then, although they remained devoted to each other, their attention and curiosity took on different directions.

Outdoor Living

Stylish Summer Picnics By Katherine Sorrell

Everything tastes better when it’s eaten al fresco. So when the forecast looks good, why not pack up some food and drink and head off for a day in the great outdoors? ç Solar bamboo Tiki garden torches, £12.99 for two; string of 20 Carnival outdoor battery festoon lights, £16.99; both LLights 4 Fun: 01423 816 040; lights4fun.co.uk. Photograph: Oliver Perrott. ç Use a portable barbecue for delicious food on the go. Suitcasestyle barbecue, £79.95, Annabel James: 0345 548 0210; annabeljames.co.uk.

Practically perfect picnics

• Research your perfect picnic spot carefully – whether it’s on the beach, in a woodland glade, near a playpark or just at the end of your garden. How far is it from the car park? Are there toilets? Can you bring your dog? Make sure you pack everything you need for the day, from plenty of water, sunscreen and snacks to a lightweight waterproof (just in case) plus a few blankets and a torch for when the sun starts to go down. • Decorate your picnic area with battery-powered fairy lights, lanterns and some bunting. Get comfy with camping chairs or deck chairs, using your picnic basket as a handy side table. Music adds atmosphere (though don’t disturb people nearby), so bring a portable radio or Bluetooth speakers and a phone. Do you need shade? On a hot day you’ll appreciate a tepee, canopy or mini pop-up tent.

The best picnic rugs are easy to carry and have a waterproof backing. Pure new wool Polo picnic rug in rainbow grey stripe, £69.95, Black by Design: 01889 502 716; black-by-design.co.uk. è

ç Picnic plates should be lightweight and unbreakable – these are made from pressed bamboo and would add a fun, festival vibe to any outdoor dining. Katie Alice Festival Folk picnicware, from a selection, Creative Tops: 01536 207 668 for stockists; creative-tops.com. To advertise please call 01925 670731 or email info@thelocalmags.co.uk

Bright colours and cheerful designs will add to the enjoyable atmosphere. Talking Tables Tropical Fiesta plates, £4 for a pack of 12; and napkins, £3.50 for a pack of 20; both Ocado: 0345 656 1234; ocado.com.è

é Hang pop-up paper lanterns for a fun, party atmosphere. These brightly-coloured ones cost £4.99 for a pack of five, Ginger Ray: 0845 680 2975; gingerray.co.uk. ç Get comfy with a folding chair. Mandala deck chair by Kirsten Star, £120, Art Wow: 07736 777 117; ArtWow.co. Keep bottles chilled with handy wine cooler, £1, Poundland: 0800 731 5622; poundland.co.uk.è

• Bring along games that all the family can play. Rounders and croquet are great, or organise a treasure hunt, play hide and seek, or set up an old-school egg-and-spoon or sack race. • The best picnic food? Anything yummy and not too melty or messy, especially if you can eat it with your fingers. Sandwiches, mini pies, kebabs, crisps, chopped vegetables with dips, plus fruit and something sweet, for example. Use coolers and ice packs to keep everything (especially drinks) cold.

Gardening

Essential Scent No matter how good your garden may look, without scent it is missing a vital ingredient – and you don’t have to sacrifice colour and texture when using perfumed plants, as many heavily-scented flowers are also really good-looking. Perfume plays a role in plant evolution and is often used to attract attention to the flower and thus entice a suitable pollinator. The insect enjoys the flower’s nectar and pollinates it in the process, increasing the chances of it producing a new generation. Many plants produce an alluring perfume during the evening or night-time, and at this time of day moths can be useful pollinators, especially during the summer months. So although a plant like the sweetly-perfumed night-scented stock may not have flamboyant flowers, it will be successfully pollinated. Weather conditions can alter the level of perfume that reaches us, and in a wind-swept spot the perfume can literally be blown away. Unusually low temperatures can also cause scent levels to drop. So bear this in mind when choosing where to put your perfumed plants.

Smaller or more subtly-scented plants, such as some of the polyanthus or the miniature iris, should be planted in raised areas or in pots – otherwise their perfume can easily pass you by! A small pergola makes a great home for perfumed climbers, and what could be lovelier than to wander from one part of the garden to another via a tunnel of perfume? Perfumed roses such as the repeat flowering climbers ‘Ena Harkness’ (red) or ‘New Dawn’ (pale, dusky pink) or ‘Zephirine Drouhin’ (brightest pink) have flexible stems and are ideal. Place smaller perfumed plants such as ‘Nemesia Fragrant Cloud’ or lavenders into window boxes or wall baskets, and enjoy their wonderful perfume in your house as it wafts in through windows left ajar.

Combine the vibrant colours of bedding plants with some scented stunners in patio pots and other containers. How about some hyacinths or the Heliotrope or cherry pie, with its flowers in white or shades of purple which will produce perfume throughout the summer? Disguise a less-than-attractive house or garage wall with wall shrubs; in a sunny spot the blue-flowered Ceaonothus produces a distinctly honey-perfumed scent, or on well-drained soil the pineapple broom Cytissus batanderei looks and smells sensational, with its lovely silvery-coloured foliage, bright yellow flowers and pineapple-scented blooms. For sitting out after sundown, plant flowers that are at their best in the evening. For a warm summer’s evening the small creamy-white flowers of night-scented stock take some beating, or try the night-perfumed nicotianas or tobacco plants such as Nicotiana sylvestris.

Create an arbour from a kit or from scratch and clothe it in perfumed climbers such as sweetly-scented roses or, in a shadier spot, spicily-scented honeysuckle. Sitting in the shade of the plants with their flowers’ scents all around is pure heaven!

Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening items: Nemaslug, green controls for leatherjackets, chafer grubs, ants and greenfly, plus garden plant supports, raised bed kits, Easy-Tunnels, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and more!
