Welcome

Welcome... Hello lovely readers and welcome to the latest edition of our magazine, as ever packed full of lovely things to read and great suppliers on your doorstep! We are certainly flying towards the Summer months and it feels like every other weekend has a bank holiday at the moment - not that I’m complaining of course! As much as I absolutely love every day working on the fabulous collection of magazines here at Love Local HQ, I have to say nothing beats a day with my lovely family or pottering at our allotment, followed by a walk with the dogs and maybe followed by a sneaky G&T in our local. The perfect Bank holiday weekend (or indeed any weekend)! This time of year certainly gets us in the mood for a little rejuvenation of our homes so what better place to find your local trusted tradesperson or supplier to enhance or improve our ‘pad’ than here in your Love Local. Plus the interiors feature on the Art of Display will help you display your treasured possessions to their best advantage as a finishing touch.

The recipe this month is for Asparagus Bruschetta - have you ever seen anything more temptingly tasty? And ready in minutes, my idea of a perfect dish. Whereas the gardening feature is about my idea of the most unperfect garden visitor - the slug… yugh, they make me shudder. Our competition winner this time is Sylvia Ruscoe, so happy to hand over £100 when someone is so happy when we call to give them the good news! Congrats on your good fortune. Until next time dear readers, have a love and peace filled May and June, Jody and the team

BMW M760Li xDrive Those of you hoping this was BMW’s M7 need to look away now. Although this may be the fastest BMW ever made, if you’re after a fire-breathing, full-blooded M car, the M760Li will leave you a little disappointed. BMW says that’s because this is a car for buyers with something of a split personality. One moment they may be keen on a country road assault so they can enjoy the glorious V12, the next they might want to kick back and relax in the massaging seats and just cruise along. Looks and image The 7 Series has long been a luxury choice for the type of buyer who still enjoys driving, though – and the M760Li is the epitome of that. With several driving modes to choose from, sporty drivers are well catered for when its sport setting is active. With the comfort setting it’s mellower, more relaxed, it eases over bumps and floats along beautifully. The looks of the M760Li won’t be for everyone but inside is a wonderful place to spend time. For those who are chauffeured the back seats are arguably more comfortable than up front. There are multimedia screens to enjoy, cushioned headrests and massaging, reclining seat backs. Space and practicality The 7 Series does feel a little smaller in the rear than rivals from Mercedes and Audi, though. Up front the driving position is a little cosseting too, but it’s easy to get comfortable. What’s under the bonnet? BMW made a lot of noise about it being 30 years since they installed a V12 engine in their 7 Series at the launch. Since then, the 12-cylinder lump has doubled in power: the 2017 6.6-litre unit boasts a whopping 601bhp, a staggering 800Nm of torque and is capable of propelling it to 60mph in just 3.6 seconds. That gives

18

To advertise please call us on 01928 739607

it the impressive title of the fastest accelerating BMW ever made, but you’ll pay at the pumps; the M760Li will return 22.1mpg and emits 294g/km. Behind the wheel The BMW is a true Jekyll and Hyde car with distinct personalities behind the wheel. On the track it was incredibly swift and that V12 makes a pleasingly sound and, while there may be some body roll, it’s not too intrusive. It’s all helped by four-wheel drive that has a rear wheel drive bias when needed. The steering is a little light in the comfort setting, though, but flick it into sport and it’s far better. Value for money For £132,310, you do get some goodies thrown in. Lightweight 20-inch alloys, a Bowers & Wilkins sound system and Car Play are included, as is an Advanced Parking System, adaptive LED headlights, a head-up display, and massaging seats. There’s even rear-seat entertainment and a panoramic glass sunroof provided too. There’s also an extensive options list, including night vision and BMW laser headlights. Verdict The fact BMW perseveres with a V12 is a revelation. With downsizing the current buzzword, it seems hard to believe that a manufacturer would launch a 6.6-litre petrol drinking lump. Although the market for it will be small, we’re still very glad it has. OK, so this might not be the M7 that many performance BMW fans crave, but it’s as close to it as we’re going to get. It’s great fun to drive, sumptuously luxurious and wonderfully relaxing when you want it to be - and all in, a very competent and exciting 7 Series indeed.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not

just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Sandymoor, Norton, Beechwood, Higher

Runcorn, Weston & Halton Village areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of

business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Gardening

Slug Survival Whether your garden is big or small, or you have just a few planters in a back yard or on a balcony, the chances are that slugs will cause you grief. There are about thirty species of slug in the UK and most feed throughout the year, especially after dark and when the soil is wet or moist – and now that spring is here, they’re out in force! However, most slugs actually do little damage to living plants, instead preferring to feast on dead and dying material. Typically it is smaller slugs like the greyishblack keeled slug and the pinkish-beige-grey field slug which are more likely to wreak havoc. With estimates of there being about 200 slugs per average cubic metre of average garden soil, the situation can soon get out of hand. Keeled slugs in particular love to feast below ground, as well as on plants above the soil surface. In no time at all

slugs can eat through the base of a young stem, killing the plant in the process, or eat seedlings even before they have had a chance to emerge above the soil surface! Later in the year, they will begin to tunnel into potato tubers and carrots too. They breed quickly and very efficiently, and you’re most likely to spot the clumps of eggs on the soil surface, beneath flopped foliage and amongst moist organic matter. Each egg is about 1-2mm in diameter and a clear, milky or off-white coloured sphere. So what can you do with these squidgy little menaces? • Go on an evening slug hunt, in particular after it has rained or you have done some watering. • Choose vegetable varieties which have useful resistance to slugs. With potatoes, main crop varieties usually suffer most, so try to grow mainly earlies. Choose varieties such as Charlotte, Kestrel, Sante or Wilja to give a better chance of success. • Encourage natural predators such as hedgehogs, frogs, toads, slow worms and ground beetles. If you keep hens consider letting them clear the ground for you – but obviously only before you start planting and sowing!

• Use the Nemaslug nematode control, a treatment I like because it is harmless to everything except slugs. It works swiftly and silently too and, if you’re a potato grower and you drench the soil around the potato plants about six weeks before anticipated harvest, the nematodes soon get to work and your potatoes should be virtually slug-damage free. Use it to clear a slug-infested raised bed or planter and apply self-adhesive copper tape around the rim of the container to keep the contents slug free. Find out more about Nemaslug and copper tape at www.pippagreenwood.com/ products/protect-your-crops.

Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com to buy gorgeous UK grown vegetable plants accompanied by weekly advice emails from Pippa, or to peruse the really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, Nemaslug and copper tape, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

• Barriers such as crushed shells, wool pellets, soot, pine needles or copper-impregnated fabric can also work well, but may need replacing regularly and results seem to vary. • Traps filled with beer can reduce slug numbers in your garden dramatically. You can buy ready-made traps or make your own using inexpensive plastic beakers plunged into the soil, the rim protruding 1-2cm above the soil surface and filled with a well-flavoured beer.

Home Interiors

The art of display By Katherine Sorrell

If you want to create displays of your treasured possessions that show them off, our top ten tips will help. 1 Consider what you are displaying, whether it is sturdy or fragile, valuable or everyday. Do you wish to admire it from afar or do you prefer it close to hand and perhaps picked up? You may find you can manage with a display on a mantelpiece, shelf or table top, or you can invest in a specially designed cabinet, case or stand. If you opt for specialist display furniture, choose pieces that complement the style and proportions of your home. 2 Good lighting makes all the difference. Carefully positioned ceiling-mounted spotlights are ideal, but an adjustable lamp may provide a more informal, cheaper fix for a simple domestic display. Think about where the light comes from: directly above, behind (for a dramatic silhouette) or from the front, and how ‘warm’ or ‘cool’ the bulb should be in order to enhance colour and texture.

Ebony glazed display cabinet, £668.25, Alexander & Pearl: 020 8508 0411; www.alexanderandpearl.co.uk.

3 Group objects together and they can be much more than the sum of their parts. A group display may consist of almost anything: a series of Delftware plates or tiles, a dozen framed silk headscarves, pebbles in graduating sizes, mirrored baubles, wooden shoe lasts, a row of modern chairs in sorbet shades…you can have great fun with almost anything you decide to gather together. 4 Displays of identical pairs of objects are probably the most simple, and often the most visually powerful, of all. There’s something extremely pleasing about this mirroring and doubling, but you must ensure your objects are placed evenly and symmetrically. 5 When choosing a group of different objects to display, look for ways in which they will work together, whether by colour, size, shape, texture or proportion. It is important to have something that creates coherence and some objects may simply not fit well into the group.

6 Every time you display more than one object, you need to opt for symmetry or asymmetry. Symmetrical displays tend to appear more classical, considered and refined, and suit traditional rooms. Asymmetry, however, is ideal for making an impact in a contemporary space, and can seem more spontaneous and intuitive.

7 A great way to make an impact with a display is by showing off a single, fabulous, huge object - but ensure there is plenty of space around it in which it can ‘breathe’. 8 Small objects can look lost in most rooms, so be particularly careful about how you display them. Try to ‘frame’ them within their surroundings – maybe in a cabinet or niche, on a side table, or on a plinth rather than a long, wide shelf. 9 If displaying large groups of paintings, prints or flat objects on a wall, start by laying your potential group on the floor. Choose the piece that you wish to be most prominent, then surround it with pieces that work well alongside it. 10 Finally, stand right back - does your display need tweaking? Don’t be afraid to change things around, and try not to make the finished result overly formal or perfect. This is your home, not a gallery, and the important thing is that you love what’s around you.

Recipe

Asparagus Bruschetta 12 fresh asparagus spears, trimmed 6 thin slices crusty bread (such as sour dough) 6 tbsp good quality olive oil 1 large garlic clove, halved 225g (8oz) goats’ cheese Handful of rocket leaves

er

Salt and freshly ground black pepp

Makes 6 Ready in: 20 minutes Enjoy the wonderful flavour of fresh British asparagus with these deliciously simple topped toasts. To make them more substantial add some flaked smoked mackerel or ruffles of Parma ham. 1. Half fill a large frying pan with water and bring to the boil. Add the asparagus spears and simmer for 3-4 minutes until just tender. Drain well and refresh under cold running water. 2. Brush the slices of bread on both sides with some of the olive oil. Place the slices on a hot cast-iron griddle pan and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side until just crisp and lightly charred in places. If you don’t have a griddle pan then simply grill the toasts. 3. Rub the cut garlic cloves all over the hot toasts (this imparts a mild garlic flavour to the toasts). Spread the goats’ cheese over the toasts. 4. Arrange the asparagus spears on top of the cheese and add a few rocket leaves to each. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and serve immediately.

Finance

Should You Pay Off Debts With Your Pension? The 2014 Budget introduced new regulations on how personal pensions can be accessed. These new pension freedoms mean that, if you have a money purchase or defined contribution pension, buying an annuity is no longer your only option at retirement. Many people have since chosen to withdraw pension monies to invest in other financial products, and some have decided to pay off debts with the money. So is it a good idea to repay debt in this way, and what are the main aspects to consider? Do you want to access your pension before you retire? Some pension schemes allow you to access your pension at the age of 55. Doing so can significantly reduce the amount you have available in older age, however, unless you have other pensions or a large savings pot. Tax issues you shouldn’t ignore You can withdraw a 25% tax-free lump sum from your pension, but taking any more than this percentage will increase your level of income for that tax year. This could mean that you enter a higher rate tax band, and subsequently lose much of the benefit of gaining access to this money. Will it affect your benefits entitlement? If you claim means-tested benefits, withdrawing a lump sum from your pension could affect your entitlement. It might severely reduce the amounts you receive, or even mean that you can’t make a claim. What are the costs of accessing your pension? Many pension providers charge a fee for early access to a pension, and there is generally a charge each time you make a withdrawal. This could severely deplete your pension fund, making it expensive and unrealistic financially to repay debts in this way. Final salary schemes If you have a final salary pension, you might be tempted to transfer your money into a personal pension scheme that gives you access to withdraw cash. This is likely to offer a poor reward in terms of conversion, however, and also may not provide you with sufficient income in retirement. Be careful about Pension Recycling The government has introduced legislation to prevent ‘pension recycling’. This situation occurs when someone uses their pension to pay off debt before they retire, with the intention of replacing their pension money whilst still working.

42

To advertise please call us on 01928 739607

Even if you do not deliberately set out to do this, by withdrawing your pension you could be inadvertently caught out by the pension recycling regulations. For example, if you: • Withdraw over £30,000 from your pension, and as a result: • Receive £7,500 or more tax-free, and then: • Increase your pension contributions by more than 30% The rules apply regardless of whether you pay off debt with the money, and can result in the anticipated ‘taxfree’ sums being taxed by up to 70% by the government. The reason why these rules have been introduced is to prevent people benefiting from taking more than one series of tax-free sums from their pensions, and as encouragement to save more for retirement. With so many people now expected to live longer, it can be risky to use your pension to pay off debt. Personal circumstances will dictate whether it’s the right move for you, but it’s crucial that you obtain pension advice from an independent financial adviser before taking any action. You’ll be able to find out the ‘bottom line’ figure once the tax, charges, loss of benefits and other potential deductions have been taken into account, and decide whether or not it’s truly worthwhile.

Book Reviews

Book Reviews

Curiosity Bookshop in Runcorn review a handful of reads, all of which are available to buy at their lovely shop…

Queensway and Kingsway road tunnels are together know as the Mersey Road Tunnels. Work started on them in 1925 despite fierce opposition from the rail industry. Princess Mary set the pneumatic drills in motion, with up to 1,700 men working on the tunnel simultaneously. This incredible feat of engineering, the largest tunnel at the time, was dubbed the “eighth wonder of the world”. During the Second World War it acted as a key supply route in the Battle of the Atlantic and Peter Jackson-Lee has illustrated the book with rare historic photographs. (Amberley Publishing, £12.99) We all remember our Nursery Rhymes – or at least we remember the first verse! For example Old Mother Hubbard actually has a total of fourteen verses, eleven of them written by Sarah Catherine Martin in 1804, although Mother Hubbard was known as a character as early as 1591 and there is a suggestion that the first three original verses refer to Cardinal Wolsey’s refusal to grant Henry V111’s divorce from Catherine of Aragon. So if you want to know all the verses and the history of over one hundred popular Nursery Rhymes, Karen Dolby’s “Oranges and Lemons” is a fascinating insight into murder, religion and the bare bones of British history, (Michael O’Mara Books, £7.99) Nothing beats sitting in the garden on a warm summer afternoon admiring the peace and tranquility of your own little patch of paradise. But how much has it cost in strained muscles, bloody scratches and bad backs? “The Deckchair Gardener” by Anne Wareham eliminates most of the hard work by helping plants to help themselves with tongue-in-cheek advice on how to have “easy care” without ten tons of chippings. Written in four seasonal sections, in the autumn chapter, the TV garden expert insists “Rake leaves of the lawn.” The Deckchair Gardeners advice: “If you’re really stuck for something to do then have a go. Otherwise, wait for the wind to blow them onto the beds…” and many other pearls of wisdom. (Michael O’Mara Books, £7.99) Yuval Noah Harari is the author of the best-selling “Sapiens – A Brief History of Humankind” showing us the challenges we face in the not too distant future. “Homo Deus” on the other hand explores the dreams and nightmares probable in the next one hundred years. Written in a very readable style, where Homo Sapiens showed us where we came from, Homo Deus shows us where we are going, from overcoming death to creating artificial life and asks whether we can protect out fragile world from our own destructive powers. The book is shocking, entertaining, and it makes you think! (Vintage, Price £8.99)

TEETH IN ONE DAY An exciting concept in the treatment of missing or failing teeth… With more than 25 years’ experience in the field of dental implants, the team at The Dental Academy understands the impact total tooth loss can have on personal confidence and quality of life. Everyday functions such as eating, smiling, talking and visual appearance can all be adversely affected. Conventional denture solutions such as removable dentures, often requiring the aid of adhesives, do not adequately address these issues. Over recent years The Dental Academy has been at the forefront in the advancement of, and investment in, dental implants, and its dedication to offering denture wearers more choice has led to a significant improvement in quality of life for its patients. One of the biggest fears people who have lost, or are about to lose, all of their teeth have is the prospect of being without any teeth at all for a period of time.

48

To advertise please call us on 01928 739607

All in One Day... Treatment begins early in the morning. Any failing teeth are removed and the dental implants are placed. Patients can then relax in the calming and private atmosphere of the Academy or, if they prefer, may return home for a couple of hours whilst their bespoke teeth are constructed by our technician. The bridge and replacement teeth will then be expertly fitted and patients leave with a confident smile, and looking forward to the enhanced quality of life that goes with it – all in one day.

BENEFITS OF ‘TEETH IN ONE DAY’ • Patients acquire their new fixed teeth in one day • The use of only four implants reduces costs • Suitable for patients who have already suffered some bone loss as uses existing bone effectively • Helps prevent further bone loss • Restores confidence, chewing ability and your natural smile • Taste is not compromised as nothing covers the mouth’s upper palate • No more loose dentures

‘TEETH IN ONE DAY’

Using the very latest technology and expertise offering the perfect solution to missing or failing teeth. A new set of teeth, complete and fitted all in one day in a simple procedure, leaves patients smiling confidently and naturally once again.

The whole experience has been very positive from the consultation with Kevin and Jan, through to the surgery and fitting. Your level of patient care is second to none.

Wellbeing

Local Health and Wellbeing Walks Phoenix Park, Runcorn with John OHara-Mee Another lovely morning for a walk with friends. Strangely enough, it’s very rare we have really poor or very wet weather at 11.00 am on a Wednesday and today was no exception. Although there was a cool breeze blowing to start with we were soon unzipping our coats as we got our blood moving climbing gently up from the car park, past the new Urban Café and around the children’s play area then a left turn along a wooded, well maintained foot path which brought us out at the start of Norton Lane. Turning left, we were able to walk in groups again as this is quite a wide tarmac road which has been closed to vehicles for many years now. This road is bordered by woods on either side and the fresh green leaves on the trees and bushes, makes a very pretty picture. It’s good to hear the sound of people chatting and their laughter tells me that they are relaxed and enjoying the experience. Before we knew it we had reached St Bertoline’s school at the brow of the hill and the huge, stone, circular water tower was looming against the blue sky to our right. Having crossed the bus-lane we then turned left again into Norton Village with its blend of old and new properties, many with house names indicating what was originally in the area. At the start of the village the houses are named Smithy Cottage then Smithy House and finally Smithy Forge so this must have been where the blacksmith lived and worked. As we walked down the cobblestone edged village lane, passing some lovely old dwellings with lattice windows, we come to a modern development tucked away in what was originally the large garden to Lodge Farm, now named Norton Village Gardens. Although the farm has made way for modern housing, the name lives on as the Norton Lodge Care Home and Lodge Cottage can still be seen as a reminder of the past. On our left we pass a lovely old white cottage where Wendy has lived for the last 30 years and she has seen many changes but can remember, and I quote, “when all this was fields”, I just love to hear people say this! Wendy has grazed her horses here for the past 50 years and fine animals can still be seen galloping about but

50

To advertise please call us on 01928 739607

gradually the land is being taken for housing. Wendy recalls that it was in these fields and local woods that the stone coffins which are on show at Norton Priory were unearthed, so there must be some real history here! Near the end of Norton Village we turn right, for a change, into Gooseberry Lane, cross Windmill Hill Road and with brisk steps we almost run down the steep path to the Bridgewater Canal. Many years ago we did this walk in reverse but found this section far too steep and have never attempted it again. We now have a level tow path to follow and although it can be a bit muddy in places, it makes for a stimulating and satisfying walk as the calm water of the canal reflects the trees and with the abundant wild fowl ever present, there is always something to catch your eye. After passing beneath a couple of bridges which span the canal we arrive at the bridge that is located at the far end of Phoenix Park and we take the slip path onto the bridge itself but keep our eyes open in case we get a glimpse of the ghostly White Lady, who according to legend, haunts this bridge. This is all relevant because on our right is Big Wood which surrounds the famous Norton Priory and even today there are sightings in the area of monks in their flowing robes, long dead but still around! With the Urban Café in sight we quicken our pace again as we pass through the very well maintained grassy areas and return to our starting point safe and well. Childhood Mischief? Wasn’t it fun?! Did you ever tie two front doorknockers together, knock loudly and urgently on both doors and then run like mad to a safe hiding place to watch the sport as both householders tried to open their door to see who was so urgently requiring attention? This was much more fun than simply knocking on the door and running away. Maybe you were not such wicked children as my friends and I must have been. Our neighbourhood consisted of row upon row of terraced house, with a cobbled back street running the length of each street. Some of the women would hang their laundry to dry on washing lines across the back street. It was our idea of a huge joke to swap a few around, so that an elderly spinster lady would find a pair of Long John pants and man’s vest hanging on her line and another laundry doer would find two pristine white sheets hanging where her husband’s greyish un-mentionables should be. Each street had its own ‘status’. Ours was one of white stoned front steps and net curtains, starched within an inch of their lives, and changed every Friday, ready for washday on Mondays. The street that backed on to ours was very different. Every house seems to have far more children than space to keep them. White stoning of steps did not occur and there were few curtains

of any discernable colour covering windows, which my mother declared had ‘never seen a bucket of water’ My brother and I were not officially sanctioned to play with the children of that street. We had our work cut out to migrate quietly ‘over the border’ in order to fraternise with the enemy, before my mother or an aunt could rumble us and haul us back to decent society and boredom. These boys and girls had such imaginative ideas of play. Not for them a skipping rope and merry little songs. No, they would tie the rope around a lamppost to create a Tarzan-like swing, whooping and kicking with glee with perhaps another hanging precariously onto their legs, until that is the local police officer on his beat put an end to the fun. Only, however, until he had left the street on his way to thwart another game. Constable Rosthorne, this fine, upstanding member of the constabulary, with his round red face and huge hands patrolled with alarming regularity and was not averse to delivering a sharp clip around the ear, if crossed. He seldom exercised that authority, except on such an occasion when he discovered us smearing dripping over the door handle to the telephone box on the corner of the street. The prank was more likely to upset him, because he did not discover what we were up to until he tried to open the door in order to inspect inside. This, he fancied, probably the area of our misdemeanour since we were so riveted to the spot by our own, doubled up laughter, several greasy swipes at the heads of some of us duly found their mark before we fled. It may gladden your hearts to know that Constable Rosthorne never grassed on us to our parents, ever! We, on the other hand would never report his physical admonishments, for we knew we would suffer another from our parents for our sins. This arrangement worked well for everyone.
