Welcome

Hello lovely readers and welcome to the latest edition of our magazine, as ever packed full of lovely things to read and great suppliers on your doorstep. What is not to love about this time of year? The weather can be amazing, I always think it’s nicer than in the school holidays. Everywhere is looking so pretty, the trees are fully green, gardens blooming, my first earlies nearly ready in the allotment. Even the weeds can be looked at in a different way, after all “A weed is but an unloved flower” (Ella Wheeler Wilcox). And lastly but certainly not leastly, TWO bank holidays! Have you had your first BBQ yet this year? We’ve had a few get togethers with friends and family at ours - there is something magical about eating outside. Even the humble banger tastes different. ‘Til next time, if we do get the promised good weather… as Baz Luhrmann advises, “If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it”.

Plan Your Summer Escape From The Kitchen With Ovenu! Ovenu Warrington is calling on homeowners from across the town to enjoy their precious time with family and friends this summer! One of the toughest – and time consuming – jobs in the house is cleaning the oven, and Paul and Andrea Clark, owners of Ovenu Warrington, are urging people to leave this most-hated chore to the professionals. With people working long hours throughout the week, free time is a precious commodity, and on a nice summer’s day homeowners would much prefer taking advantage of the weather out and about in the sunshine, as opposed to tackling the oven. Paul said: “People want to spend as much quality time with their loved ones as possible, instead of cleaning the oven when the weather is nice. It is one of the most hated household chores, and our service is there to literally take the heat out of the kitchen!” The Ovenu valeting process involves dismantling key components of an oven such as the door, interior panels, fan and shelves and placing them into design-registered equipment, which uses environmentallyfriendly, non-caustic products to clean the oven parts. The whole process takes approximately three hours and leaves the oven, hob and exterior in immaculate condition. Ovenu is accredited by the British Accreditation Bureau and all cleaning products used by Ovenu are environmentally friendly, biodegradable and conform to 10

Paul and Andrea Clark, owners of Ovenu Warrington

the latest government REACH regulations. Ovenu’s Carbon Remover is also approved by the Vitreous Enamel Association. The experienced team of oven valeting specialists is also warning people not to neglect their ovens at any time of year, but especially in the summer. Paul added: “If not properly maintained, and, in extreme cases, a dirty oven can pose a number of health and safety

risks, not least, cooked on grease can become the possible cause of a house fire. It may be barbecue season, but the oven still requires a little TLC. “The oven is one of the most important appliances in the home and a regular oven clean can improve its performance and prolong its life and, in the long run, can save people money because their current oven will last longer.”

For more information about Ovenu, or to make a booking with Paul or Andrea, call 01925 453377, email ovenuwarrington@hotmail.co.uk or you can visit www.ovenuwarrington.net. You can also like the company’s Facebook page by visiting www.facebook.com/ovenuwarrington.

SUMMER reads Crooked Heart by Lissa Evans, who incidentally also wrote “Their Finest Hour” which was recently made into a film, is a heart-warming story of improbable friendships, with the most moving finale. Set at the start WW2 we meet Noel an orphaned evacuee paired up with the unscrupulous Vera – a very reluctant foster Mum. But, as time passes the unlikely duo realise they make a good team as they navigate the opportunities and tragedies of war.

Extraordinary People by Peter May. I love to discover an author I’ve previously not read; Peter May came highly recommended and did not disappoint. This is the first novel in the Enzo Files series, introducing Enzo MacLeod, a Scottish, forensic expert now living in France who has taken on a wager, he can ill afford, to solve seven of France’s most notorious murders. The pacey novel races through the French countryside, Paris and its un-nerving Catacombs as we follow MacLeod on the trail of a series of very deliberately set clues to discover the truth behind Jacques Gaillard’s disappearance ten years earlier. Love and Ruin by Paula MacLain, This book picks up a number of years after The Paris Wife left off. Based on a true story we follow Ernest Hemingway and his third wife, writer Martha Gellhorn as they meet and fall in love against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War. Gellhorn is a courageous and fiercely independent war correspondent striving for success in a man’s world. As the relationship develops we observe Martha as she struggles with the conflicts of living in the shadow of Hemingway’s enormous fame and forging her own career, a dilemma that will ultimately break both their hearts. Published 13/06/19. Lethal White is the forth novel from Robert Galbraith, pen name of JK Rowling, in the Cormoran Strike series. We find the notorious Strike and his now business partner and newly married Robin Ellacott investigating Billy, a deeply troubled young man who turns up unannounced at Strike’s office distressed about a crime he thinks he witnessed as a child. When Billy disappears, Strike and Robin are set on a trail that leads them into the heart of parliament and London’s East End, can the pairs highly charged relationship survive the strains of their latest tricky case.

Did you know we now have a range of wellness services through our life & wholeness coaches at Spa Beautiful? These are just 2 testimonials from our Life-coaching clients I have had counselling and other therapies in the past, but nothing has worked before. I have changed more in these last 6 weeks than all the previous years of counselling. I had given up hope of ever finding my breakthroughs, but so glad I found this - it has come at just the right time for me!

When I met Angela I was at my lowest point feeling so lost, lacking any self-belief, mentally & physically exhausted and believed that everything bad in my marriage was my fault. Angela is amazingly insightful & could see my situation in a more objective light; she has always genuinely listened to develop a true empathetic understanding of me and my circumstances. Coupled with incredibly supportive yet gentle challenge she has unlocked my true potential and this has allowed me to finally break free, live in my own freedom & truth and I can honestly say I am still astonished at how happy I am now living the life I had always wanted.

Our services One to one coaching Life-coaching one to one 90 min sessions (Mon to Friday daytime and evening) £60 or course of 6 for price of 5

Are you ready for lasting breakthroughs & guaranteed deep transformation in your life? Please be encouraged by some of the testimonies of others who have committed to this journey. We care too much to leave you where you are!

Your bedroom is your own personal space, and the ideal room in which to express your personality, so why not consider a top-to-toe makeover? A pop of colour Bold colours are on trend this spring, often quite dark and moody, and where better than a bedroom to go for this dark décor? Use fuchsia, turquoise, emerald, orange, mustard or deep blue in arresting combinations or perhaps just cover one wall with a strong shade. Even the addition of a bright headboard, rug, throw or group of cushions can make a difference. On the walls Experiment with paint colours by using a tester pot to cover a large sheet of card, then stick it to different walls at various times of the day so you can see how the colour changes. Alternatively use patterned wallpaper, all over or just on a feature wall. Or opt for a wallsized mural of, for example, a wooded glade, tropical palms, a cityscape, oversized flowers or a starry night sky. Beautiful bed linen Introduce sumptuous bed linens that are gorgeous to look at

and soft to the touch. You can use plain white as the basics, just adding a stunning throw, blanket, eiderdown or quilt – or several – for eye-catching colour and pattern. Or go for broke and put colour with colour and plains with patterns for layered vibrancy.

é Bluebell Gray Peggy Midnight duvet cover set, £135, Hurn and Hurn: 01603 559 250; www.hurnandhurn.com

Take the floor In a bedroom where wear and tear is not a factor, luxurious, deep-pile carpet is an option. If that’s beyond your budget, consider sanding back your floorboards and either varnishing or painting them, then adding a rug or two in a bold, modern style. Lights fantastic Lighting should be subtle and flattering. Make it adaptable with table or floor lamps in corners and fitting a dimmer switch to the central pendant. Choose warm white, energysaving LED bulbs that are not overly bright. For bedside reading, a pair of swing-arm, wall-mounted lights frees up bedside table space, or hang a bare filament bulb from a coloured cotton flex suspended from the ceiling or a wallmounted bracket. www.essentialguide.co.uk

Gardening

Make it Minimal There is increasing enthusiasm for a more minimalist garden style, where fewer plants have greater individual impact in a more designed situation with straight lines aplenty, so here are some suggestions for achieving the eect you want. 34

To advertise in The Essential Guide please call 01925 670 731

Decide on the plants you like and that will suit your garden but keep to as few different types as possible. The biggest impact will be achieved if you are selective, for example concentrating on ornamental grasses. Also key is clever use of straight lines, ideally with a few right angles too. Edges must be sharply defined, perhaps using sleepers, other timber or angled metal. Keep plants well back from the border edging so these lines are not interfered with. Colours should fit your preferences and the surroundings but restrict the number of colours for a calmer and simpler effect. Existing features such as sheds or fences can be recoloured or painted to fit in with the colour scheme – otherwise, their current colour will have to be included in that scheme. A stunning minimalist effect can be achieved by using a single type of plant and container – for example, conifers in terracotta containers. The only variation is in the size of the conifer: all colours, textures and plants are the same. Buy different sizes of the same conifer type and clip regularly to maintain the size difference or buy one size and trim lightly to achieve the desired look. Green, in the form of foliage, helps add a feeling of tranquillity to a minimalist garden so include it, perhaps

as a neatly clipped box hedging or as a few bay lollipops in angular containers. Containers must be very plain, ideally straight-sided angular styles in a single colour. An evenly spaced trio of pots, each with a single central plant, provides a perfect choice of container planting. If you like topiary stick to simple tightly clipped spheres or ‘lollipops’, cubes or at most spirals; there is no space for a fantastically sculptured creature if you’re going minimalist! Plants with simple or angular shapes such as iris, alliums, conifers, clipped box, canna or palms are an excellent choice, but opt for personal (but simple) favourites available locally. Grass alternatives such as gravel may feature highly. Gravel needs less maintenance than grass, but keep it weed-free and easy-care by installing a weed-membrane (rather like woven, plastic hessian) on to the soil before putting down the gravel. Thoroughly weed the area then firm and compact well before putting the fabric down. Don’t use cheaper plastic sheeting as rain won’t penetrate. Opt for simple, classically styled garden furniture with as few colours and textures as possible and it won’t detract from the minimalist environment and look – now sit back and enjoy!

Newchurch WI April 2019 Report Newchurch’s meeting on 10th April had an unusual start. The speaker, John Stirling, began the evening with a fascinating account of his life in “ Buckingham Palace and Toys”. The toy connection began when he was 9 and Enid Blyton chose him to play Noddy in a stage production for 12months. He even produced his original Noddy costume! John was a pupil at the famous Italia Conti Stage School in Soho and came from a theatrical background – a film star mother and an operatic tenor father. He had a long acting career working on radio and TV beside Jimmy Edwards, Jack Warner, Sid James and Morecambe and Wise. He also wrote plays and moved to television directing. Through this work he inherited 12 neglected

donkeys, thanks to his wife Annie, and this became a major focus of their lives . They have saved many donkeys which have provided companionship for disabled and handicapped children. Annie walked one donkey from Balmoral to Buckingham Palace and this led to a meeting with the Queen, who chose to feature them in a Christmas broadcast. The Stirlings’ work for donkeys and children continues and Barbara Delve thanked them heartily. John judged the April competition( A Dialect Poem) and chose Lesley Lloyd as winner, followed by Ann Langridge and Pat Fisher. The usual business meeting began after tea, served by Rose Collins and Joan Evans. 4 “ birthday

girls” were greeted and Ann Langridge was thanked for the pretty flower arrangement on the President’s table. The Luncheon Club will meet on 16th April at the Horseshoe and there will be a walk around Salford on 24th April. The coffee morning had been very successful and the National AGM in June has chosen a resolution supported by Newchurch on rural bus services. The visit to the Brindley theatre will be on 16th May and the group trip to York will be on 22nd June. Vice-President Doreen Procter hoped to arrange an extra autumn trip to Boundary Mill and the Calf’s Head in addition to the September visit to Ferraris. Newchurch’s next meeting will be on 9th May when Hazel Griffiths will talk about “Santa Evita”.

Recipe

Fresh Cherry & Almond Cake This delicious fruity cake can be served warm as a dessert or cold as a classic afternoon tea cake. Makes 8 Ready in 1 hour 40 minutes, plus cooling time INGREDIENTS 225g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 225g golden caster sugar 225g self-raising flour 4 medium eggs, beaten 300g fresh cherries, pitted and halved 100g ground almonds 150g icing sugar Extra fresh cherries, to decorate TIP The fresh cherries will mostly sink during baking but this is perfectly normal, giving a moist fruity layer at the base of the cake. It’s best eaten within 2 days of baking. 40

1 Preheat the oven to 170C, fan 150C, gas mark 3. Grease a

20cm round deep cake tin with the extra butter and line the base and sides with baking paper.

2 Place the butter and caster sugar in a large mixing bowl

and using a hand-held electric mixer beat together until very pale and creamy. Gradually pour in the eggs, beating well after each addition. If the mixture starts to separate slightly, stir in a spoonful of the flour.

3 Sift over the rest of the flour and fold in gently with a

metal spoon. Toss the cherries into half of the ground almonds, and fold into the mixture with the rest of the ground almonds. Spoon into the prepared cake tin and gently level the surface.

4 Bake in the preheated oven for 55 minutes to 1 hour

10 minutes, until the cake is risen, golden and a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack to cool.

5 Whilst the cake is still cooling make the icing: sift the

icing sugar into a bowl and stir in 2-3 tbsp warm water and mix to make a thin icing. Spoon the icing over the warm cake, allowing some to drizzle down the side. Decorate with extra cherries and serve warm or cold.

Duke of Edinburgh Duke of Edinburgh is an amazing experience which I encourage any young motivated person to do. I have dedicated three years of my life completing all three DofE awards (Bronze, Silver and Gold) and I wouldn’t change a thing! Duke of Edinburgh is made up of four main components: Volunteering, Skills, Physical and Expedition. Each of these components contributes to achieving your DofE Award and provides experience for later life. For my Bronze and Silver Awards I volunteered at my local church café, serving hot drinks and teacakes to the elderly. This helped my social skills as I got to interact with people who I normally wouldn’t in my life and provided me experience in a café which now looks good on my CV. For a change, on my Gold Award I volunteered at my local charity shop which helped me gain experience in a shop and grew my confidence as I had to speak to customers whenever I was there (you have to do an hour a week but because I enjoyed it so much I did more). For the Skill part I learnt how to play the guitar throughout all of

my Awards. I had lessons once a week and regularly practiced which led up to me performing with a band at a summer concert. This was a big step for me as, before DofE, I have never played the guitar and preforming to a mass audience petrified me. The Skill part of DofE is my favorite as it helps develop skills or be introduced to a new one. Skills can be learning a new instrument, like me, or something creative or even baking which I can imagine would be very tasty! The next component of DofE is the Physical section, I am not a very active person so I took up walking for my Bronze Award to help me train for the Expedition and also ease myself into exercise. Then for my Silver and Gold awards I went to the gym which benefited me in my Expedition part of DofE. The dreaded Expedition: the length and difficulty increases through the awards starting at

2 days, 1 night for Bronze to 4 days, 3 nights for Gold. We plan our own walks (with guidelines of where our camps are), walk by ourselves and cook for ourselves. This helped me gain independence and a sense of accomplishment when I got to the top of the hill with a sense of joy indescribable. Throughout the Expeditions I walked in Snowdonia, The Lakes and Peak District whilst battling all the weather conditions the earth could throw at us. I met loads of amazing and inspirational people and have made friends for life. I wouldn’t have been able to complete this award if it wasn’t for Girlguiding and Simon and Pam from Challenge Expeditions, a big thank you to you! I also want to say a big thank to my family who supported me through this with all the highs and lows. The biggest thank you goes to Sara Isles, from Girlguiding Culcheth District who made all this happen, she organised all this and helped me maintain my eDofE (where you put your evidence to complete your award). Finally, all I can say is if you’re 1424 and are yet to do DofE, what are you waiting for?! Girlguiding Culcheth District offers the DofE Awards to all members aged 13+. Spring term adventures, fun and skills The spring term continued with the Beavers finding out more about different disabilities with games to help show the effects of a disability. Another meeting saw them finding out more about Shrove Tuesday and using cardboard pancakes they raced around the hall, finishing with pancakes to eat. For the Cubs and Scouts March is camp month. A time for fun, friends, working together, relaxing over a game or two of cards along with any badges or links to them showing their skills.

Cub Camp Excited Cubs arrived at ‘The School for Spies’ or rather a Scout Camp site for a weekend of fun and adventures. Saturday kept the Cubs busy finding out more about Baden Powel as a spy and how he started Scouts; whilst using radios was fantastic as they took it in turns guiding another Cub, wearing a blindfold around an obstacle or two and under a chair. Outside they had a challenge to go around the adventure playground and a game or two of footie. Sunday’s adventure was the

caving bus along with another go on the playground. All too soon it was time to close the camp with the presentation of the Communicator Badge.

Scout Camp Two weeks later and it was the Scouts turn to have a busy camp. Friday evening saw them practicing their map reading skills plotting the route for Saturday’s hike; for the four Scouts taking part in the Cheshire Hike it gave them more practice using grid references to plot the hike route. After all the recent rain it was great to wake up on Saturday to see the sun shining. Breakfast, butties made and packed and we were of on the hike. Split into two groups, one going clockwise, the other anticlockwise there was a bit of friendly competition as to who would arrive back first! A great hike, enjoyed by everyone with the Scouts on the Cheshire Hike helping the younger members with map reading. Archery was on the agenda on Sunday with all the Scouts having a great time then back to the kitchen to make pizzas for lunch. Pack, camp closed

and time for home. No specific badge for the weekend but links to other badges which with the weekend activities go towards helping to achieve the top award for Scouts, the Chief Scout’s Gold Award. Cheshire Hike An annual two day event with teams of two Scouts taking part in it. The Saturday after the camp saw the two teams having one last practice with their rucksacks packed with all the kit required for the actual hike, they set of on a circular hike. Returning to the start point, the Scouts practiced pitching their hike tent and cooking tea. Two weeks later it was time for the Cheshire Hike, an early start saw their kit being checked and weighed then route planning before being allowed to start on the hike. An overnight camp followed by a second hike to the end point. They had a great time with one team being placed 6th in Cheshire and 2nd in our District. Congratulations. Girls and boys fancy joining us? Why not come along to a meeting so you can see for yourself how much fun you can have. And adults there is so much in it for you too, not just the immense satisfaction of seeing the young people grow in confidence and their smiles as they achieve another badge or just have a fantastic meeting but for yourself too.

Local business supports a local family in need Small businesses are an integral part of any local community and those that give back to their community are considered as local heroes to many. One Warrington family who is very grateful to local company Bumblebee Plumbing and Heating Ltd are the Olliers from Culcheth. Their old boiler had been malfunctioning for two years leaving them with intermittent heating and hot water. John was diagnosed with Leukaemia in November 2018 and has undergone extensive chemotherapy in Whiston Hospital during the past five months. “It was during this time,’ says Anne, his wife, “that our boiler got worse, switching itself off several times a day. This

wasn’t good for John as he feels the cold and the house needs to be kept warm.” Ross Coen, from local Warrington Company Bumblebee Plumbing and Heating Ltd heard about John and Anne’s plight, and offered to help. Thanks to the generosity of Ross and his colleagues at Intergas Boilers, the family now has a new boiler, and a warm home with a continuous supply of hot water again and an up to date thermostat meaning that the Olliers can easily control the heat in every room. Anne and John are thrilled with their new boiler. “This has taken away some of the stress and worry from our situation and has already made such a difference to us,” says John. John may be a candidate for a

bone marrow transplant and during his chemo treatments Anne and the family worked tirelessly to encourage more people to register to be a bone marrow donor. As a direct result of their campaigning at least 29 people have added to the register. 75% of patients won’t find a matching donor in their families. More bone marrow donors are required for the 2000+ people who are in need of bone marrow or stem cells every year. Getting on the register is simple. If you’re aged between 17 and 55, just register at www.dkms.org.uk and request a cheek swab. This will be sent in the post, and you can do it in seconds in the comfort of your own home. It’s a much simpler process to donate than it used to be, and donors are usually back to work the next day.

Could debt snowballing be the quickest way to get out of debt? Debt snowballing is a term used to describe a particular method of dealing with debt, which in some ways goes against ‘traditional’ thinking. It’s commonly advised to deal with the most expensive debt first in terms of interest rates and charges, which is a natural and effective approach to paying down debt. But one issue that isn’t taken into account when repaying debt in this way is the psychology that can sometimes influence a successful outcome. Here’s how to debt snowball • Make a list of all your debts – the one with the smallest balance at the top. • Pay off the minimum amount on all your credit cards and other debts, apart from the one with the smallest balance. • Pay as much as you can off this debt and repeat each month until you’ve paid it off in full. • Cross it off your list of debts and use the money released towards the next debt. • Continue in the same way down your list (the second smallest next), making the minimum payment on all other borrowing. • If you’re able to earn more money, putting it towards the debt you’re currently repaying increases the snowball effect and reduces your overall level of borrowing.

56

• When the debt you’re focusing on has been paid off, cross it off your list – rinse and repeat until you’re debt-free. Human psychology when paying off debt Debt snowballing is a system that applies a little human psychology to paying down debt, and acknowledges that we all lack motivation at times. The method only works if you have sufficient funds to make the minimum payments on all your debts, however, so if you don’t, you would need to look at alternatives. The sense of accomplishment when you can cross a debt off your list is invaluable in encouraging you to carry on, and could in fact be one of the main reasons for the success of debt snowballing. Advantages of debt snowballing • It offers vital motivation. • It’s a simple and straightforward system that’s easy to maintain. • You’re forced to focus on one

debt at a time, and as long as you keep up the minimum payments on other debts you can forget about them for a while. • It helps you manage your money for the long term and introduces good money habits. Are there any downsides to debt snowballing? The main downside of debt snowballing is the extra interest you pay on your debts when compared with the debt avalanche method, and when considered only from a mathematical point of view it clearly isn’t the most obvious option. Repaying debt is a little like dieting, however – small wins offer the motivation that many people need to continue and succeed. One important issue is to make sure you dedicate any money released when a debt is repaid to paying off the next one. Without this, the ‘snowball’ effect of increasing amounts being available to tackle your next debt doesn’t materialise, and the system will stall.

THE BEST BARELY-USED

BARGAIN CARS

Opting for a car that’s a year old over a brand-new model could save a packet. Finding money off a barely-used car can be tricky, so we’ve found classified ad examples representing huge savings over brand-new options. The prices quoted are correct at the time of writing. 60

Land Rover Discovery Sport Price new: £45,810 Price one-year: £32,444 This baby Discovery is a desirable family car, mating a superbly practical sevenseat body with Land Rover prestige, albeit with a dated interior and lack of top-end technology. At £12,000 off list price, a one-year old example is a bargain.

BMW 3 Series GT Price new: £38,280 Price one-year: £19,890 The 3 Series GT is pitched as an all-occasion car. It’s parthatchback, part-saloon, partexecutive, but this vehicle trying to be three hasn’t proved very successful. That said, it offers a high level of quality along with that premium badging. A new 320d M Sport Gran Turismo is £38,280, but with 10,000 miles on the clock and last year’s plate it costs around £19,890.

Jaguar XF Price new: £36,495 Price one-year: £27,500 The XF drives nicely and has a decent engine range, but hasn’t sold well. We found a 2018-reg R-Sport car fitted with the 2.0-litre 178bhp diesel engine for £27,500 with 4,000 miles on the clock – a huge saving.

Infiniti QX30 Price new: £29,720 Price one-year: £17,000 This combination of Mercedes platform, Nissan interior and Renault diesel engines was a reasonable mix until you looked at the price. However, at around £17,000 for a year-old example, the QX30 becomes easier to recommend.

Vauxhall Astra Price new: £21,760 Price one-year: £9,799 With £12,000 or 54% off a sporty-looking Astra SRi with the excellent 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine at just a year old, we wonder why anyone buys a new Vauxhall!

Toyota Yaris GRMN Price new: £26,295 Price one-year: £21,995 The Toyota Yaris GRMN may be a bargain buy at £21,995 and with less than 1,500 miles on the used market, particularly as its limited numbers and widely-hailed driving experience may make it a future collector’s item.

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT 6.2 Price new: £63,995 Price one-year: £38,995 It’s the Grand Cherokee’s monstrous 6.2-litre V8 engine that puts buyers off, but for performance, power, and sheer noise on a budget, this is a great way to go.
