‘Oofing’ not allowed…. Well, here we are and half way through the year and as you’d possibly expect it’s time for some more of the old clichés: where has the year gone? Time definitely goes faster the older you get… a constant reminder that life races by (and therefore to enjoy it as much as you possibly can). Although we’re not at retirement’s door, age creeps up on us in very subtle ways. As many of us do, the other half and I work hard at maintaining the image that we’re still ‘with it’. Weight watching, exercise, hair, clothes, makeup (not him I hasten to add), and a witch’s cauldron of pills and potions in the bathroom cabinet. Still, I realised we were both doing something that was completely giving the game away. This is something that children never do, nor even 20 or 30 or 40 year olds. It’s ‘oofing’.

For the gherkin mayo • 4 level tbsp extra-light mayonnaise • 2 level tbsp tomato ketchup • 8 cornichons or cocktail gherkins, drained and roughly chopped
Serves 4 Ready in 35 minutes, plus chilling Ingredients • 2 onions, 1 grated, 1 thinly sliced • 500g lean beef mince (5% fat or less) • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce • 1 tsp mustard powder • Low-calorie cooking spray • 4 x 60g wholemeal rolls • 4 crisp lettuce leaves • 2 tomatoes, thickly sliced

High Summer in July July and August are dominated by flowering perennials to bring colour into your garden. Visit one of the flower shows or some of the gardens open in July to get ideas for planting schemes to try at home. A few shrubs are in flower at this time including the classic Lavender. They revel in gravelly dry soil so are ideal for dry gardens. If you have a wall that needs something to drape over the edge, grow the English Lavender with pale blue flowers and aroma as you brush by. For a complete contrast try Spirea Golden Princess with bright yellow green leaves and magenta pink flowers. This shrub will grow into a low mound, can grow on dry or heavier soils in sun and if it gets too large, cut back hard in February. Perennial borders need plants of different heights and I recommend Veronicastrum virginicum Fascination growing to 2m tall with spikes of pale pink flowers. With it you can plant Hemerocallis or day lilies with their broad strappy leaves and bright colours from pink to red and yellow. They will grow up to 80cm tall. Another good companion is Phlox paniculata Prospero with pink flowers also a taller grower to 80cm. All these will enjoy a moisture retentive soil in sun. If you have a well drained soil then Lychnis coronaria with felted silver leaves and zingy pink or classy white flowers, is for you. For those gardens with damp, well drained soil, I would try Monarda didyma or Bergamot, a perennial with shaggy whorls of pink or red flowers up to 70cms. è

What to get on with in the garden? Keep pots well watered and stood in saucers to retain moisture. Cut back your evergreen hedges in July and August so that new growth has a chance to ripen and not be damaged in winter. Prune shrubs that flowered in June such as Deutzia, Weigela and Philadelphus. If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. On 14th and 25th July, 8A Warwick Drive, Altrincham is open. If you love flower arranging then visit to seek ideas from the herbaceous border and see the new areas developing. Stretton Old Hall, Tilston, Malpas is open on 15th July and planting is described as “controlled exuberance”. The Night Sky
On July 27th there is a total Lunar Eclipse. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes completely through the Earth’s dark shadow, or umbra. The Moon will gradually get darker and then take on a rusty or blood red colour. The eclipse will be visible from the UK as the moon rises in the east. Mars will be at its closest approach to Earth on July 27th and its face will be fully illuminated by the Sun. It will be brighter than any other time of the year and will be visible all night long, just to the south of the full Moon. This is the best time to view the planet this year. On July 12th Mercury reaches greatest eastern elongation of 26.4 degrees from the Sun. This is the best time to view Mercury since it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the evening sky. Look for the planet low in the western sky, to the right of the bright planet Venus, just after sunset. Jupiter is low in the south west and sets about 4 hours after the Sun. It is the brightest object in the southern evening night sky apart from the Moon which will be close to Jupiter on July 20th.

July 2018 Saturn is also low in the southern sky in the constellation of Sagittarius. The Moon is close to Saturn on July 24th. The reason that the planets are low down in the summer months is that, like the Sun and Moon, they all follow the same track through the sky. This track is known as the ecliptic and the constellations it crosses give rise to the zodiac. The planets and Moon therefore are at the same elevation as the Sun is in the winter. On July 28th to 29th the Delta Aquarids meteor shower peaks. The Delta Aquarids is an average shower that can produce up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by debris left behind by comets Marsden and Kracht. The shower runs annually from July 12 to August 23. The nearly full moon will be a problem this year, blocking out all but the brightest meteors. But if you are patient, you should still be able to catch a few good ones. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Aquarius, but can appear anywhere in the sky.

Lemon & Almond Sandwich Cookies These delightful crisp and buttery lemon and almond cookies have a tangy layer of lemon curd in the middle. Makes 10. Ready in 40 minutes, plus chilling and cooling Ingredients 115g unsalted butter, softened 115g caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling 1 tsp almond extract 1 large egg yolk 200g plain flour, plus extra for dusting Milk, for sealing and glazing 2-3 tbsp good quality lemon curd 2 tbsp flaked almonds

1. Place the butter, sugar and almond extract in a mixing bowl and beat with a hand-held electric whisk until pale and fluffy. Beat in the egg yolk then gradually beat in the flour to form a crumbly dough. 2. Gather the dough with your hands and knead lightly until smooth. Wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes, or until firm. 3. Line a baking sheet with baking paper. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to 2mm thick. Using a 7cm round fluted cookie cutter, stamp out 20 rounds, re-rolling the dough as necessary. Place on the baking sheets and chill in the fridge for 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 190°C, fan 170°C, gas mark 5. 4. Lightly brush around the edge of half the cookie dough rounds with a little milk. Drop ½ tsp of lemon curd in the centre of these rounds. Carefully top with the rest of the cookie dough rounds, gently pressing to seal the edges. 5. Glaze the tops lightly with milk and sprinkle with the extra caster sugar and flaked almonds. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until pale golden. Leave to cool completely on the baking sheets for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely. Tip Replace the lemon curd with jam, marmalade or chocolate hazelnut spread for a change of flavour. Remember the filling will be very hot straight out of the oven, so be sure to leave to cool completely before tucking in!

The Best Convertibles For Under £2,000 With summer in full swing, if you want a drop-top to provide that wind-in-your-hair experience we’ve picked out some of the best convertibles for under £2,000. MG TF Readily available and well-priced, most MG TF’s come with a peppy 1.8-litre engine and all have a folding cloth roof. It’s still a relatively handsome looking car that seems to have aged well, and we found a number for well under our £2,000 budget.

Citroen C3 Pluriel Designed to be five cars in one, the C3 Pluriel wasn’t successful, meaning you can pick up decent used examples and, though they may not have a sports car design, you still get that drop-top experience very cheaply. Mercedes SLK Buying a used Mercedes can mean higher repair costs and pricier parts, so choose carefully – a decent servicing history is essential. Toyota MR2 For no-frills, involving motoring, the little MR2 provides exciting performance from a 1.8-litre engine, and its compact size makes it feel nimble on the road.

The lack of any real boot does make it impractical but there are plenty of reasonable examples available within budget. Mazda MX-5 The MX-5 is a reliable, cheap-to-repair convertible and is a go-to choice for those who want a relatively involving drive coupled with compact dimensions. Rust is an issue, particularly on early models, but a clean example will provide miles of trouble-free motoring. Mini Convertible The ‘new’ Mini has proved to be immensely popular, and the convertible version was snapped up as a result of its cutesy styling and reasonably powerful range of engines. Available well within our £2,000 budget, make sure that the interior is straight, and listen for strange noises from the costly-to-replace power steering pump. Saab 9-3 The 9-3 convertible is a comfortable and spacious droptop, and there are plenty of spare parts and components available should you need replacements, despite Saab’s now defunct status.
Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet Most Bugs come comprehensively equipped, with air conditioning and alloy wheels just some of the extras you’ll find fitted, and the Beetle is a decent and reliable soft-top. BMW 3 Series Convertible (E46) There are many examples of 3 Series convertibles to be found at this budget. Most common are E46 models, which are sturdy and excellent to drive. A variety of engines are available too, with even the top end straightsix models well in this price bracket. Double check the arches as these are prone to rust. In addition, turn the steering lock to lock while travelling at low speed and listen out for any troubling knocking noises. Audi TT Roadster There aren’t many about in this price range, but the Audi TT Roadster is a fine option. Strong build quality, reliable engines and quirky styling mean that this softtop still looks and feels fresh today. At this price you’ll be looking at a high-mileage example, but providing it’s got a decent service history there’s no reason why these can’t be hassle-free convertibles.
