“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships,” the great Michael Jordan once said.

While the Hawks may have not won the state championship, it sure felt like it on March 2 when the team hoisted up its fourth place trophy, giving closure to many seniors in what was their final game as a Hawk.

This was a season that will be remembered by overwhelming defense, highlight reel plays, and redemption at the Tacoma Dome just one year after being eliminated following two straight losses on the same court.

All year, coach Nalin Sood had preached defense to his team, frequently holding opponents to fewer than 50 points a game.

Before even reaching Tacoma, the Hawks defeated highly-touted Foss 63-53 on Feb. 23.

Foss’ star guard, Dezmyn Trent, was forced to sit out just a few minutes into the game due to a leg injury, giving Terrace a major advantage over the Falcons.

Senior guard Marquis Armstead nailed several key shots, scoring 18 points. Jesse Zerom and Greg Bowman each added 15 points.

MTHS graduate killed by lion in California

Tinker and Hiestand pay visit to WJEA

Dianna Hanson, a 2007 MTHS graduate, was killed by a lion at Cat Haven in California, where she was an intern working with big cats.

Dianna Hanson, a 2007 graduate, was killed by a lion at the Northern California wildlife park where she was an intern. She was 24 years old.

Hanson was found dead by investigators in an enclosure and the lion was shot dead by sheriff deputies.

“Dianna was just a really outstanding young woman at our school,” Principal Greg Schwab said. “She was a student leader, she was actively involved in sports and just a really well loved student when she was here. Our hearts go out to her family as they process this really tragic event.”

Hanson’s death has brought media attention to MTHS and it has sparked a national conversation about the enclosure of large animals.

After MTHS, Hanson graduated from Western Washington University.

Students vote in ASB elections, elect leaders

ASB elections featured tough competition this year.

Next year’s Big 6 will consist of President-elect junior Lilianne Nguyen, Vice President-elect junior Sydney White, Secretary-elect freshman Liya Ewing, Treasurer-elect junior Aysha Raza, Public Relations officer-elect sophomore Aaron Castleton and Historian-elect junior Peter Kidane.

This year’s candidates were Lilianne Nguyen and Will Khadivi for President, Sydney White and Yoel Tekle for Vice President. For Secretary, the candidates were Liya Ewing, Jack Pearce and Gabby Atherley, and for Treasurer were Aysha Raza and Bryce Pingul. For Public Relations the two candidates were Aaron Castleton and Erick Yanzon. The candidates for Historian were Madison Haney, Peter Kidane and Nico Malig.

The candidate interviews were aired on the Hawk Broadcast Network on March 6 during PASS, where each candidate for Big 6 had the chance to persuade the student body to vote for them. Each candidate was asked three questions.

On March 11, there was a runoff election for Secretary and Historian during lunch.

Last year’s Big 6 election had five positions that were uncontested, with only the historian position being contested.

Legendary freedom fighters Mary Beth Tinker and Mike Hiestand kicked off Tinker Tour USA on Saturday, March 9 at Inglemoor High School in Kenmore, teaching students and teachers awareness of their First Amendment rights.

“Students should have a say for democracy in their schools. You all have a voice, and should participate in democracy during your lives,” Tinker said.

Tinker, along with her brother John and his friend Chris Eckhart, were suspended after wearing black armbands to school in December 1965, to mourn those killed in the Vietnam War and to show support for Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy’s call for a “Christmas truce.”

“I had no idea that this was a big deal,” Tinker said, “I took it off, gave the band to the girls’ adviser, and was suspended,” she added recalling the events that led to one of the most significant Supreme Court cases in the history of the United States. A First Amendment battle ensued and in 1969 the Supreme Court issued the historic Tinker Decision making it clear that all students have First Amendment rights, even when they are in school.

“My parents raised us to believe in peace.

Everyone in the country, the world even, can learn more about their rights,” Tinker advised.

Hiestand worked for more than 20 years as an attorney for the Student Press Law

Center, answering questions about free speech and media law. Their project aims to teach students and teachers about rights and how to responsibly use them to strive for peace.

“It was a surprise to us. Some people thought doing unpopular things was unpatriotic, but we were being patriotic by following the amendments,” Tinker said.

Tinker and Hiestand will officially start their campaign on Sept. 17, Constitution Day, where they will travel to juvenile

detention centers, libraries, schools, and other venues encouraging students to stand up and speak up about things that matter.

Tinker is a part of history and she currently appears in nearly every history book used by American students.

She also is featured in the book, “101 Changemakers: Rebels and Radicals who changed U.S. history.” She currently works as a trauma nurse in Washington, D.C. and works to empower students’ voices in contemporary issues during her spare time.

Softball coach with ties to Terrace resigns after sending players to find him dates

Troy Hennum, 25, resigned from Seattle Public Schools last Friday after he was accused of using his girls on the Roosevelt H.S. softball team to find him dates.

Hennum was recently hired as the Roughriders’ softball coach, but was put on leave after a Seattle woman, Katharine Aagard, 25, notified Roosevelt administrators about the situation.

She told the Seattle Times and ABC News that she was approached by a group of girls at the sporting goods store where she works. The girls explained that their coach had sent them to find potential dates for him. Aagard exchanged text messages with Hennum, but she said she felt skeptical about what was going on.

Hennum, a 2006 Terrace graduate, was scheduled to be a student teacher at MTHS this spring. He was planning to become

a learning support teacher. He was also a basketball coach at Brier Terrace M.S. this past winter.

“He was a student here and he was somebody who I liked,” Principal Greg Schwab said. “He’s a good guy in spite of what people may read about him in the media.”

The story has made numerous local and national headlines, much to the surprise of those who personally know Hennum.

Social studies teacher George Dremousis said, “He was a very energetic and hard working young man who was passionate about working with athletes and pursuing special education. I feel it’s unfortunate for him that a few decisions made in poor judgment have hurt his reputation. That’s the worst part about it.”

Hennum declined to comment on this story to the Hawkeye.

Currently, a portion of vending machine sales goes to ASB to fund school athletics and activities. However, with the removal of sweets and salts, some school officials predict a significant amount of funds to follow.

“If the FDA has its way, our district vending machine ratio will be changed next year to 100 percent healthy,” activities and athletics director Kim Stewart said.

If the vending machine choices change, there will be consequences.

“The ASB will get less than they get now.

In fact, the whole school would be severe-

ly affected. We would have to reconsider everything. Fundraisers would be especially hard since we often use sweets to get money,” Stewart said.

Sophomore Rachell Gasseling said, “I don’t think it is a good idea for the school’s income to change, and it will affect the ASB in a major way. But it is a good thing for people’s health. A lot of people want junk food over healthy, though.”

Stewart said, “People don’t understand that the local stores love it when less is put in the vending machines. That means more money for them. I think it is ironic that we let a kid walk in the school doors with an energy drink, but they won’t let us sell it.”

Students depend on the school for many things. With the upperclassmen busy with Advanced Placement exams and time consuming classes, and the underclassmen focused on getting the last 10 minutes of sleep in the morning, there isn’t always time to do everything.

That includes packing a lunch or eating a breakfast.

ASB elections go off without a hitch

T

he ASB elections went great!

Every day there was a lot of energy being put out – both by the candidates and their supporters. All of the posters that the candidates created and put up made the hallways look decorative, as well as showed both their school spirit and willingness to put forth the work that ASB requires. Hopefully, this enthusiasm will be carried into the rest of this year and then into next year by the new ASB officers. Though it’s unreasonable to say that everyone is happy with each new officer elected, they all have great leadership skills and goals for the school. From more dances to revving up school spirit, the ideas that the candidates brought to the table could do a lot to improve the school, whether they were elected or not.

PowerPoint fails to convey important message concerning future classes

I

t’s that time of year again – registration for the up and fast approaching school year. It is not only crucial for students to pick classes that help to full fill their credit requirement, but also to pick classes that would be helpful for their future career decision. The approach doesn’t seem to be very productive with students, though. Year after year, the information being presented stays the same while students’ attention spans decrease. Starting as freshman all the way to junior year, the same PowerPoint with very few changes has been presented. School officials desperately hope we somehow have the mental capacity to properly pick classes after 40 minutes of watching a poorly constructed and uninteresting PowerPoint. The PowerPoint could be acceptable for a student’s freshman year, but there needs to be a better way to effectively communicate the different classes and programs that are offered at MTHS and around the school district.

f you think about your life, what do you envision? Do you see yourself finishing high school, then maybe getting a job and going off to college to continue the next chapter of your education? For many, this is the path that will be followed, leading them into a life where getting a career is easy due to the amount of college education and the slip of paper stating that they are in fact, American. Still a large majority of people do not get to experience this. People who immigrate to the United States and do not obtain legal citizenship will most likely live in poor conditions for most of their lives while being unable to obtain higher education or employment because of their lack of proof for citizenship. Now, that is just a thing of the past. A large step has been taken toward helping the affected families. In Washington, the D.R.E.A.M. Act has passed in the House of Representatives. The D.R.E.A.M. Act stands for Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors. To qualify for this bill, a person must have been 15 years old, five years before the bill was set in place. If no crime or conviction had been taken place, then that person would qualify to apply for scholarships for college, or to apply to the military. After either two years in the military, or graduating with a two year degree, the person may apply for permanent citizenship.

This bill is long overdue. There are many impoverished families that immigrate to the United States that obviously have something to contribute to society. This bill could hopefully set the precedent that other states could follow.

Before this bill, a college that was found giving scholarship money to a student of non-American citizenship could be fined a hefty sum of money. This is the equivalent of being back in elementary school where the bully would take your lunch money.

Well finally a nice person decided to help, but then was scolded by a teacher for helping you. When put in those terms, it becomes a little more easy to understand the injustice.

This bill passed in Washington state, but not without its fair share of criticism. Those who oppose this bill bring up some “problems” the bill would bring. The idea is that if an illegal immigrant is offered a chance at a scholarship, it’s taking away from a hardworking American family who has been paying taxes their whole life. This does not seem “fair” to those who have been here all along.

There is a problem with that theory. You see, though an immigrant student may beat out your precious son or daughter, it most likely means that he or she was smarter, faster, or better in someway to win that scholarship. This shows that this student has something to offer to the

world. All of those years that his or her family couldn’t pay taxes for fear of deportation will most likely be paid back in the form of his or her future career. Whether that be a brain surgeon or a professional athlete, they deserve a chance to attain their dreams just as much as any American. Plus, it isn’t the child’s fault that he or she is here illegally. The student was most likely either born in the United States or brought her as an infant.

Another problem brought up is that this bill will supposedly cause a massive influx of illegal immigrants attracted by this obtainable citizenship. To quote Congressman Tom Tancredo, “It will increase the amount of people who come to the United States illegally.”

Maybe Tom, but that problem only has validity if every illegal immigrant who is eligible for this bill has the skills to obtain said scholarship or entrance to the military. Well, since 1.1 million people every year enter the United States illegally, according to PBS.org, the chance that every single one of them will have the skills to enter the military or go to college is very slim. If by some miracle that did happen, wouldn’t that be good? We need more people like that because in case you haven’t noticed, Americans are lazy! While these gifted immigrants are getting GED’s, most of us will be getting onto the couch to watch Honey Boo Boo do whatever she does that we find so funny and other shows of the like.

The point is this bill is revolutionary. This could potentially give way to a new perspective on looking at our illegal immigration problem without making life so hard for them and as a result, causing them to feel as if they aren’t welcome and end up going back “home.” We should embrace the gifted immigrants we have without being blindly dismissive while only keying in on their citizenship.

Cell phones should be used, not refused

How some classrooms could benefit from using these invaluable tools F

or quite some time now, cell phones have been stuck with a bad reputation in classrooms everywhere. The piece of technology many people cannot bear without is rebuked in schools.

Considered one of our generation’s most profound inventions is cast aside in classrooms for us to adore Gutenberg’s printing press. Teachers aren’t just disapproving the use of cell phones Mike Guevarra in their classrooms; in fact, they Hawkeye staff despise it.

To be able to snatch a student’s iPhone and furiously throw it out of their classroom’s window is an ability that’s only possible in a teacher’s dreams, so our disgruntled teachers decide to deal with cell phone use in one of few ways. These courses of action include telling the student to put their phone away, taking the phone away, and telling the student to put their cell phone away, but only after a lengthy shaming of the student in front of their peers during instruction. Seemingly, when one student gets caught with their cell phone out, everyone’s education and sanity gets chewed up by a quarter hour rant. This is hardly a productive use of time. We should be using this amazing device to supplement our learning, not inhibit it.

Well, it still exists and it’s in Edmonds. Located just west of Mountlake Terrace, and perfectly framed by the Olympic Mountain range and restless waters of the Puget Sound. Simply put, downtown Edmonds has everything for a perfect day.

Starting at what many consider the center of downtown, the fountain at Main Street & 5th Ave., one could enjoy a burrito at El Puerto Family Mexican Restaurant. After lunch, stop by for desert at the Edmonds Bakery half a block away.

MLT Civic Center: Making sense of it all

Absence of funds, out-of-date facilities and the fact that the city of Mountlake Terrace doesn’t own its city hall are all reasons why Propositon 1 is back on the ballot. The city is again trying to pass Proposition 1 to provide funding for a new Civic Center. The vote will take place early next month.

The Civic Center Proposition would create a new city hall, an extension of the police station, and a community center for citizens to use.

This is the third time the city has tried to pass the bond measure – this time asking for $25 million. In the last vote, the proposition received a 57 percent approval, but failed to get the required 60 percent approval to pass under state law. The total cost to taxpayers, the city predicts, would be $43 million. It will eventually be paid off in the year 2063.

This would make city property owners’ taxes raise by an average of $10.13 per month.

The opponents of Proposition 1 think the cost to tax payers it far too much, given these tough economic times.

If the bond measure fails, two things could happen.

Given that the city will run out of funding to continue to rent the interim city hall beginning in 2014, the city will need to find a different source of funds.

The first option is to pass a property tax levy. This would need 50 percent of voter approval and would raise property taxes by $4.20 per month.

The city makes the case that this option would cost more than the Civic Center. By the end of the time it takes to pay off the Civic Center, the city estimates the rent payments would cost $61 million, $18 million more than the cost of the civic center.

The other option, if Proposition 1 failed, would be to cut services in order to raise enough funds to continue to rent the interim city hall. The city said these cuts would be drastic. Severe cuts would be placed on the police dept., parks and recreation, maintenance and funding for city events.

However, neither of these two alternatives to the Civic Center fully addresses the city’s problems. Funding is not the only problem with the current situation.

Several city facilities are not able to meet the growing demands of the city. The Civic Center would create many renovations and improvements to the city’s facilities. The other two options would not.

One of the facilities in the poorest condition is MLT’s 22 year-old police station. The police department (MTPD) has simply outgrown its current home.

Due to lack of space for offices, police officers have had to take some drastic measures. Officers are working in places

Local artist Cee Lambert specializes in painting portraits of pets

Entering the Mountlake Terrace Library, several rows of bright, furry faces cover the wall.

Painted delicately with pastels, local artist Cee Lambert’s artwork brings the scene of the library to life. Each of Lambert’s paintings is unique, and is displayed with the goal of promoting cultural events in the area.

Lambert is a local artist who creates bright land and seascapes of the Pacific Northwest, as well as pet portraits.

Beginning March 1, the Mountlake Terrace Arts Advisory Commission launched the Cee Lambert Exhibit in Mountlake Terrace Library. The exhibit will be up for enjoyment until March 31.

Currently on display at the Mountlake Terrace Library is Lambert’s collection “Animal Zone,” which is an assortment of oil-painted pet portraits.

Lambert also teaches art classes and has the aim of producing artwork that makes people happy. Lambert has been painting for nearly 30 years and says that she was “born an artist.”

She said that she paints because it is “relaxing.”

“Some find it [to cause] anxiety, but I find it relaxing,” Lambert said.

Her favorite piece of artwork was recently sold, titled “Hot Stuff,” a creation of hot chili peppers.

The pet paintings that Lambert has displayed at the library took about 15 hours to paint each, spread over several days.

Her work requires three layers, under painting, the second layer, and the fine details.

“I just like ones with character in their eyes. Feather, furry, feline, I don’t mind,” Lambert said.

Hansen: ‘not an increase in crime, just a change in how the crime is counted’ MTPD’s 2012 crime report appears to show more crime, but officials say that’s not really the case

By scanning the recent Mountlake Terrace 2012 crime report shows a total of 649 crimes, it would seem as if the amount of crime has been gradually rising since 2009 when the total was 564.

Mountlake Terrace Police Dept. (MTPD) Commander Doug Hansen said that this is not actually the case.

“What you’re seeing is not an increase in crime, just a change in how the crime is counted. It’s not really an increase, it’s a more accurate total,” Hansen said.

The change in how crimes are counted started in 2011. Called the National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS), this system counts things that were not included in the former system, which was known as the Uniform Criminal Report (UCR).

For instance, the old system counted one crime as one occurrence. The new system, however, counts the total number of crimes as the number of victims affected. For example, if there was a burglary of a house where five people lived, the crime report would count that as five crimes, whereas before it would only be counted as one.

Also, there is an additional charge being counted towards the total under NIBRS, which was unaccounted for previously. The number of simple assaults now gets added to the grand total, making it both higher and more accurate.

Hansen predicts another year similar to these, consisting of very close to the same number of crimes. He also expects the types of crimes to stay persistent, with a

significantly larger amount of property crime than violent crime.

The most common crimes in MLT in 2012 were burglary and larceny.

Mountlake Terrace is a “bedroom community”, meaning it is mostly made up of homes, not businesses. As opposed to cities like Lynnwood, burglaries are more common than other means of theft because there are more houses to steal from than businesses.

To lower amounts of burglary, inserting alarm systems, or even just making sure doors and windows are locked, are adequate precautions. No precaution is completely foolproof, but simple steps can do a lot.

“As citizens, we could prevent future crime by taking better care of our property,” Hansen said.

In response to these problems, as well as under new administration, the MTPD has been trying to be more visible and get out into the public.

“Under new leadership we have taken a much more aggressive role in patrolling the city,” Hansen affirmed.

As the police force makes changes to try to prevent crimes, the community is a very large factor in its accomplishments.

“We have a relatively safe community,” Hansen said.

“When we have the help of citizens and people are being proactive, it helps a lot.”

Keeping an eye out for suspicious activity or strange vehicles in the neighborhood and calling 911 when a crime is occurring are simple yet effective ways to be proactive.

It’s recommended to consult a doctor before fasting or making any dieting decisions. It’s also wise to keep in contact with a doctor to observe your progress.

In today’s world, with image being very important, seven out of 10 teenagers and young adults are concerned about their health and weight.

They try various diets – some of which may be harmful to the body and mental health – as a resolution to their physical appearance.

Studies by the Boston Medical Center indicate that approximately 45 million Americans go on a diet each year. In persuit of the “perfect” body, these 45 million Americans will spend $33 billion on weight loss products in their pursuit of a trimmer, fit body. However, less than 20 percent of these diets produce meaningful results.

Is there any way someone can live a healthier lifestyle without spending a whole lot of money, energy and time? The answer to this question is yes, there is!

Instead of spending money on diet foods, a simple yet effective way to achieve a balanced lifestyle is to eat a healthy diet.

In order to eat healthy, being able to get all the nutrition needed daily without overindulging is essential.

Some tips and tricks to eating healthier are eating four to five small meals throughout the day, as opposed to three large ones.

Try not to over obsess counting calories though. Instead, keep in mind two key things: freshness and having a variety of nutrients. Plan on eating a balanced amount of protein, vegetables, grains and good fats by separating the intake of nutrients through out each meal in the day.

Also, as usual, make sure to drink at least eight glasses of water a day or even one sip every 20 minutes to keep you alert and your mind alert.

Remember to get in some exercise. It’s not necessary to go to the gym for hours everyday, buy try to fit in a daily walk or run.

Another important thing to remember is to eat with moderation. By thinking of some foods as off limits will help keep your mind on the end result. Try and swap these out with healthier alternatives such as snacking on snap peas or celery with peanut butter.

Remember though, it’s okay to occasionally have a slice of pizza or cake, just avoid overindulging; it leads to a guilty conscious.

Take-out or eat-in restaurant on the corner of 44th and 212th provides a great variety of food and dietary options for all

As a fan of Asian cuisine, I have been to many teriyaki joints throughout Puget Sound area. The closest teriyaki place to MTHS is Teriyaki Garden, so I decided to go there and try their chicken teriyaki.

I had never been to Teriyaki Garden, but I’d only heard good things about this restaurant. While looking at the menu, I saw that they use “100 percent vegetable oil and no MSG.” I also noticed the “low carbohydrate” option of exchanging the rice for a second salad. At first glance, I could see that there were many healthy options available for many food critics.

My meal consisted of perfect thinly sliced chicken breast which is a more wholesome alternative to dark meat. Sauce was already poured on the chicken.

There were also many vegetarian meals on the menu.

One of the vegetarian options was tofu yakisoba which is exactly like a regular yakisoba, but the meat is replaced with tofu.

The portion sizes are also very reasonable for the set price. The portion size may be a little more than you should eat in one sitting, so they provide takeout boxes which can be saved as dinner for later or save as leftovers for the next day.

The Glasses Drive, which was held primarily for the month of February and ended on Feb. 25, had a successful turn out.

Key Club, the student club that held the fundraiser, was able to collect 55 glasses of all different types and styles, ranging from your typical reading glasses to the funky and stylish.

Casey Hynes, a senior who has been a part of Key Club since her sophomore year, was in charge of the glasses drive.

“I was [in charge], but we all kind of worked together,” Hynes said.

There should be more glasses being sent in since Key Club sent out more flyers to retirement homes and places of the like. Any additional glasses collected, Key Club will just use them next year, according to Hynes.

“The glasses are collected from various locations around the community. Then they’re brought to College Place Optical, and one of our members works on repairing them a little bit, cleaning them up and then packing them up to be shipped to Mercy Ships. (The glasses) go to third world countries and help provide medical care and vision aid for people who have probably never had that opportunity. It gives them a chance to see when in the past, you know, they may not have been able to,” Larry Merwin, the adviser to the Key Club from Lynnwood Kiwanis, said.

Kiwanis’ mission is “to serve children of the world” through feeding the hungry, providing shelter for the homeless, and various other volunteer projects, as stated on KiwanisOne, the Kiwanis’ Organization homepage.

According to Merwin, this is Kiwanis’ second or third year having the glasses drive which they plan on keeping as an “on-going project.”

“We love it! It helps because obviously that’s what we’re about is trying to instil some community service and leadership skills for the students and by participating in projects.

Hopefully, this gets them thinking in the future (about) being involved in service to their communities,” Merwin said.

Some of the future fundraisers Key Club plans on holding this school year are a Stuffed Toy Drive and a Toiletry Drive.

Key Club will be collecting gently used stuffed animals through March 22 and donating them to local police and fire stations. The Toiletry Drive will be held shortly after from March 27 until April 21 and the items collected will be donated to Cocoon Houses and Kiwanis Houses.

If you have any gently used stuffed animals or unused toiletries, then feel free to drop them off in room 135.

Day 1, Terrace vs. Lincoln On Feb. 28, at 7:15 p.m., MTHS tipped off against a fairly familiar opponent, the Lincoln Abes (23-4).

The Hawks had previously faced the Abes on Dec. 8, where they lost a one point nail-biter, 60-59.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, the rematch was nowhere near as close with Lincoln blowing out Terrace with a final score of 68-47.

Similar to last year’s trip to Tacoma, things never really got going for the Hawks as they struggled with sloppy passes, leading to turnovers at key points of the game.

Senior post Tre’Shaun Fletcher took over for Lincoln, scoring 29 points, including the first nine points of the third quarter.

Behind Fletcher was junior guard Ahmaad Rorie, who had 21 points, many of which came from behind the three point line.

Jesse Zerom led the Hawks with 10 points, Fernandez added nine points and Bowman and LaCasse each scored seven points.

The Abes would go on to finish third in the state after defeating Franklin 77-69.

Day 2, Terrace vs. University Facing a similar situation as last year, heading into the second day with the threat of going “two-andout” and going home, the Hawks faced the University Titans (16-8) from Spokane.

Following the first quarter, things appeared to be a repeat of their previous matchup against Lincoln, as the Titans led 18-11. But after the Hawks ended the first half with a 14-3 run, the Hawks held a slim lead at 29-26 at intermission.

Terrace likely would have continued to pull away from University if it had not been for Brett Bailey, a University of San Diego commit. Bailey hit nearly impossible shots with ease and finished with 28 points.

In the second half both teams traded basket for basket, with each team scoring 30 points. With less than a minute left Fernandez fouled out on a charge call. With 27 seconds to go Bailey hit a three to tie the game at 56-56. On the other end, Armstead drew a block on a drive and finished the three point play to give the Hawks a 59-56 lead, which would be enough as Bailey missed a 40 footer as time expired.

LaCasse led the way for the Hawks with 18 points, Bowman finished with 13, and Armstead and Fernandez added 12 points each.

averaged 28.2 points per game heading into the matchup against the Hawks.

Armstead, standing at just 6’1”, was given the nearly impossible task of guarding the 6’5” Fenner, and turned in possibly one of the best defensive performances in school history. Fenner finished with a mere nine points – a season low. Armstead was constantly in Fenner’s jersey and his head. The Seattle Prep star grew visibly more frustrated as the game carried on.

After picking up his fourth personal foul while attempting to stop a hard Fernandez drive, Fenner got into an altercation with LaCasse when lining up for the free throw and quickly received a technical foul, his fifth personal, thus fouling out of the game and giving Fernandez a chance for four free throws.

Fernandez drained all four, giving the Hawks a 10 point lead with less than two minutes to play, all but sealing a fourth place finish for Terrace.

The Hawks held on to win 54-43, giving the team the best finish in the school’s history as a 3A school.

The last time Terrace took home hardware was in 2005 when the team took 3rd place in the 4A tournament.

Following the game, an emotional but cheerful head coach Nalin Sood said, “This is all about the seniors. They feel awfully validated with all the work and time they’ve put in. There are a lot of coaches who will walk out of here feeling like the luckiest coach in the game of basketball and that’s how I feel right now.”
