Running Start program slightly modified

Due to budget cuts, the Washington State Legislature has made changes to the Running Start program by minimizing the number of credits that will be tuition-free for students on July 26, 2011. It also limits the number of classes a student can take at the high school while taking a certain number of credits at the college.

In 1993, the Legislature passed a law that allowed high school juniors and seniors to take up to 18 credited college courses numbered 100 or above, tuition-free while simultaneously completing high school.

The Running Start program provides up to two years of paid tuition at any state-run community college that participates in the program. High school juniors and seniors must pass the community college’s entrance exam to be allowed to take the college level courses.

The first major change is how many credits will be “tuition-free.” Before July 26, the state paid for up to 18 college credits and anything over than 18 credits was to be paid for by the student.

However, starting this fall, only 15 credits will be tuition-free. Even though this change may not be such a big deal, it can be for those students who had enrolled in more than 15 credits and will have to pay about $96.39 per credit after the 15 credits limit.

President Obama presents plan to Congress aimed at helping economy

President Barack Obama laid out a new plan to spur job growth in a struggling economy where the unemployment rate currently stands at 9.1 percent during a September 8 speech to Congress.

The bill is called the American Jobs Act and is aimed at helping bolster the economy. The $447 billion plan includes $245 billion in tax cuts including extending the payroll tax holiday. The plan also includes $140 billion in infrastructure spending for rebuilding aging bridges and public schools, as well as providing local aid for potentially saving the jobs of up to 280,000 teachers. The final $62 billion of the plan is aid to unemployed workers, including a tax credit for businesses to hire long-term unemployed workers.

“I am sending this Congress a plan that you should pass right away. It’s called the American Jobs Act. There should be nothing controversial about this piece of legislation,” President Obama said in the speech.

“Everything in here is the kind of proposal that’s been supported by both Democrats and Republicans — including many who sit here tonight. And everything in this bill will be paid for. Everything.”

The President proposes paying for the plan mostly by closing corporate tax loopholes

and eliminating Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, which has been meet with opposition by Republicans.

“Private-sector job creators of all sizes have been pummeled by decisions made in Washington,” House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said. “It’s a very simple equation.

Tax increases destroy jobs.”

Despite Republican’s pleas that increasing taxes will hurt the job market, the tax cuts approved by President Bush in 2001 and 2003 have added $2.8 trillion to the national debt.

Since those tax cuts in 2001, when the national unemployment rate stood at around 4.5 percent, it soared to as much as 10.2 percent in October 2009.

Even with all of the political wrangling surrounding the plan, Americans have an extremely favorable view of it. According to a Sept. 15-18 Gallup poll, 65 percent of Americans believe the plan will create jobs, while 40 percent of Republicans agree. When it comes to paying for the bill, 70 percent favor closing tax loopholes used by corporations and 66 percent think taxes should go up for the wealthy.

In a nation where unemployment is near its highest level in 30 years, it is clear that something must be done before this crisis gets any worse.

Even though it was a pretty mild summer for the Pacific Northwest, many residents complained about how summer came late and didn’t start getting nice until near the end. But in reality, the people of Texas had it much worse.

Texas had record droughts this past summer. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, as of Sept. 13, there was not a single county in Texas that had not experienced drought. Also, approximately 88 percent of the state was in drought level D4, the highest level on the scale.

With extreme droughts in Texas, things dried up fast and made perfect fuel for any fire.

Fires have devastated the state of Texas this fire season. According to the Texas Forest Service, since fire season began on Nov. 15, 2010, Texas Forest Service and area fire departments have responded to 22,602 fires. These wildfires have burned 3.7 million acres, an area larger than the state of Connecticut and have destroyed over 2,700 homes.

People were forced to abandon their homes, businesses, everything they knew. A Texas woman who was forced

to evacuate told ABC News, “While we were grabbing our things you could feel the heat of the fire and there was smoke in our house already.”

Not only did these fires have a terrible impact on so many lives, it had an extremely large financial impact.

Mark Hana, a spokesman for the Insurance Council of Texas, told CNN that the wildfires could have a cost of over $250 million to homeowners. Between the economic impacts from the gigantic wildfires and horrendous droughts, it is going to end up being one extremely expensive summer for the state of Texas.

Our school offers much more than is displayed at the assemblies

A

s upcoming assemblies are quickly approaching, the main theme seems to be centered on sports rather than the arts or academics.

Only once a year is there an opportunity for MTHS art students to let their talent shine at the arts assembly, as opposed to the three seasonal assemblies dedicated to sports. As well as having great athletes, MTHS is home to many great artists, thespians and musicians who have won many awards. The school should showcase student talent in other areas, too, such as robotics, DECA, and Hi-Q, not just athletics. The school should give all students an equal chance to show off their skills. Although athletics require much talent, there are more than 20 clubs and after school activities that offer students a place to share common interests. So if you feel like assemblies do not show enough variety of the many student interests at this school, there is still time to change; we just need to speak up.

Anti-bullying message is unnecessarily forced too much at this school

T

his Wednesday, a long advisory will be held to address the issue of harassment and bullying. Last year, then-senior Jessica Williams put together an “anti-bullying” themed spirit week, which included labeling the hallways “Hug Hallway” and “High Five Hallway.” An assembly concluded the spirit week with a speaker address bullying. This year, our Back to School Assembly featured Stu Cabe, a speaker who spoke about the bully and the bullied. Now, MTHS students will be required to sit though an hour long advisory period, listening to advisors ramble on about bullying. Honestly, the school district is putting too much emphasis on bullying.

Failing to do their only job When “protection” does more harm than good

O

n Sept. 22, the White House launched a program called “We the People” – a site where people could create a petition, and if it got 5000 signers within a month it would be reviewed by policy experts. The intent of the program was to give people a chance to get a say directly to the government and make it feel like they have more of a chance to be heard.

The usual hot button topics of gay marriage and marijuana legalization are there en masse, but there was one petition that stood out. The petition called for the Transportation Security Administration to be disbanded and funds reallocated to more direct forms of security. With 20,000 signatures within less than a week, public officials are sure to take note.

Originally formed after 9/11, the TSA was David Krienke intended to protect the average citizen from Hawkeye Staff terrorists and others who wanted to harm the U.S.A.. Whether or not the TSA has prevented acts of terrorism is of some debate but in a press conference on Aug. 21 this year, the TSA claimed a system of over 20 layers of security as well as intent to custom fit screening procedures for each person. As the 10th anniversary of 9/11 has come and gone, questions must be asked of the continued relevance of the TSA. The TSA, if it were needed before, is questioned now because we have entered a unique time. It is a time where our greatest foes have been scattered; Osama Bin Laden is dead, al Qaeda is fragmented, Libya is busy fighting a civil war, and Egypt has overthrown a dictator. Such strict “security measures” serve only to take away from the common citizen what they intend to protect.

This irrelevancy was compounded with security decisions that unnecessarily affect citizens. In November 2010, the TSA stepped up their security procedures to include new backscatter X-ray machines which would theoretically detect non-metal weapons as well as hastening the lines. Many criticized this as a big brother action that paves the way to even more rights stripped away with the fear of terrorism being the excuse.

News has been fraught with TSA agents going above and beyond to search citizens who no logical person would consider a threat. In June of this year, a 95 year old woman was forced to remove her adult diaper because of security fears. It is extremely unlikely, to the point of absurdness that a 95 year old woman is going to bring a bomb into a plane, especially when the groups we fear the most think of women as something that are to be seen and not heard. The TSA has a horrible track record of blanket policies that spark public outrage, such as an 8-month-old child who was pat down in May this year because the stroller flagged explosive screening. Such barbaric tactics seem out of place in a world where terrorist groups are closely monitored.

Ever since 9/11 the average citizen knows that the moment a plane becomes hijacked all bets are off. No one is going to sit around anymore and hope for the best, the simple fact is that we live in a society that is more aware of the dangers facing it and no longer are we surprised by these acts of aggression.

However, do not mistake the situation for something it is not, there are still groups today that want the United States to fall, and just because they are currently in disarray does not mean they could not rally under a new leader tomorrow. But this chance of danger will always be present, wheth-

er or not you are fighting a war in a thousand places or whether you try to offend as few people as possible. Just because we want to be safe does not mean we should give up even the smallest luxury to reinforce that safety.

Benjamin Franklin once said, “They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” This has never been truer than in the digital age, in which sophisticated satellites can track the movement of every airplane and where emergency services are three swift thumb movements away.

The United States would be better off if we were to suffer a thousand terrorist attacks than give up one iota of personal freedom for the modicum of safety we would gain. The events of 9/11 should be seen as a chance to correct our faults and face the world with its varied ideologies rather than retreat inside and defend ourselves.

Protection before a problem arises A

lthough there are some things that I do not like about the TSA like the limit on liquids rule, I have never hated or resented them because I could never know the amount of pressure they have to go through. They are under constant review and scrutiny not only from supervisors but also from the American public.

If anyone has ever been patted down or has performed a pat down it is still an uncomfortable experience.

Some may say it is unnecessary to pat down kids, however this is an incorrect assumption; there is an old Chinese proverb that goes, “fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice shame on me.”

During the Vietnam War, the Viet Cong would use children holding fruit baskets filled with explosives to kill American soldiers. This creates a legitimate reason for the TSA to screen children, just because the United States doesn’t use children in war doesn’t mean that others won’t.

The TSA is a valuable organization, not only because it catches terrorist threats but also because it prevents them. Many people assume the TSA hasn’t done their job because they haven’t “caught” someone. The opposite is true, the TSA acts as a deterrent and as an active procedure for terrorist activities, and simply by existing it helps

to secure transportation in the United States. The TSA’s mission statement is to “Protect the Nation’s transportation systems to ensure freedom of movement for people and commerce.”

The TSA has a more silent than overt effect; if someone is caught then the deterrence factor has not succeeded.

Give the TSA some credit because even though you may not like the way they do things, they are doing it for your safety and the safety of the thousands who fly every day.

For people that fly one or two times a year, the procedures that the TSA use may appear extreme. But on the flip side, if you are a frequent traveler, someone who travels every 2-3 weeks, then the TSA’s security procedures are much more likely to be seen in a positive light. If you were to compare three minutes of extended searching to death, extended searching would without a doubt be more desirable.

The amount of criticism the TSA receives compared to criticism the FBI or your local Police department receives, the TSA receives much more, even though there are thousands of unsolved murders. People may justify the methods the police or the FBI use because they must receive warrants from judges, which involves bringing in another authority, however TSA agents could get warrants to search people, but the amount of time required could be days depending on the judge. This isn’t feasible as there are hundreds of people waiting in line to leave the airport or enter the terminals. There is no time to call a judge and get a warrant; the TSA agent must decide using the best of their abilities then and there what to do. Being a TSA agent is a high stress job, because if you miss one thing it could mean the end of hundreds if not thousands of lives.

The TSA may be criticized but it seems that the more criticism your airport receives the safer the airport. The most secure international airport in the entire world is Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv, the capital of Israel. Ben Gurion Airport is the only international airport in Israel and it is also the most heavily criticized airport. They constantly are accused of racial profiling and abuse of power, yet Ben Gurion has not seen a terror attack since May 30, 1972. That is more than 39 years ago.

Israel only declared independence in 1948. This means that Israel has been safe from airborne terror attacks for more than half of its statehood.

Representative John Mica of Florida says that the United States should just adopt the Israeli method of psychological profiling, but it is not possible in the United States, as the judicial system has banned all uses of profiling as a method of screening. Psychological profiling is to have a trained professional who is well paid and under constant review to interview persons entering the country. If the professional screener determines that a person may be a threat, the person can be taken aside for additional screening; these interviews can last anything from a minute to an hour. However, until the U.S. judicial system alters its viewpoint, there will be full body scanners and pat downs instead of profiling.

The TSA is like China’s great wall, there are soldiers behind it, but the point of the great wall was to keep people out so that that army doesn’t have to fight.

Next time you go to the airport, plan ahead and don’t blame the TSA for your missed or late flight, because if they weren’t there, your next flight could very well be your last.

Grunge turns 20

The music that put Seattle on the map is celebrating its big anniversary

In 1989, Pop-Punk band Nirvana released their debut album Bleach, which was a minor local hit. After years of starvation, struggle, and a wide array of different drummers, singer-songwriter Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic had finally put out a full-length album.

Cobain came from a broken home in Aberdeen, Wash., and Novoselic from Compton, Calif., but then moved to Cobain’s hometown in his mid teens. The two met in high school, where Cobain had just been turned on to the punk scene. They instantly clicked, and decided to start their own band – whose name they would change many times over the years. After calling themselves Skid Row, Pen Cap Chew, Bliss, and Ted End Fred, they eventually settled on the name Nirvana.

Their practice space was shared along with another band that resides in Washington, The Melvins . They came out with their first single in 1988, called “Love Buzz,” recorded with drummer Dave Foster to replace original drummer Aaron Burckhard. The song was originally by a Dutch rock band named Shocking Blue. After the successful release of the single, they began recording for the rest of Bleach. By this time, they had found new drummer Chad Channing. The album was majorly influenced by ’80s punk and ’70s metal.

In 1990, after writing songs such as “In Bloom” and “On a Plain” on tour, they started recording on their second album. Prior to this, they had fired Chad Channing, and were on the lookout for a drummer who would be a good replacement. Finally, after seeing him play with his band, Scream, they hired Dave Grohl.

One day during a recording session, they quickly wrote and then cut what would not only be their album’s first single, but would become their biggest hit, and later be considered one of the greatest songs of all time. The song, as you might have guessed, was “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” and the momentum it gained would help launch Nirvana into super stardom.

By the time they finished recording and had began touring Europe, “Teen Spirit” was being played regularly on the radio and MTV. They noticed that all their shows were sold out, and people were going absolutely crazy for them. In September of 1991, they released the album “Nevermind,” which was selling 400,000 copies a week by December, initially selling over 7 million copies in the United States and 30 million worldwide. This caused an explosion in the Seattle music scene, with fans, newspapers and magazines referring to this new sound as “Grunge.”

Following Nirvana’s footsteps many other grunge bands would begin popping up and taking their share of fame, including Pearl Jam, who had much success with their debut album “Ten,” as well as the likes of Soundgarden and Alice in Chains. “Nevermind” was later placed at No. 14 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, and is considered the greatest album of the ’90s.

Nirvana would go on to release a collection of cuts from their early days, which they called “Incesticide.” The band then went on many tours, during which they decided to stop playing “Teen

Spirit,” due to its extreme popularity.

They released one more album in 1993, titled In “Utero,” which took on a harsher, more alternative sound. After Cobain’s suicide in 1994, the remaining members disbanded. Novoselic played bass in a few other bands, and even became a Washington politician. Grohl formed a new band, called Foo Fighters, who achieved great mainstream success, releasing seven albums to date.

Today, we commend Nirvana and other such bands for helping invent the “Grunge Scene” that became famous as Seattle music. The teenagers of the ’90s that listened to Grunge are sometimes referred to as “The Disaffected Kids,” or “Generation X.” The Grunge style has become a stereotype, making the modern wearing of flannel shirts, ripped jeans, and sometimes Doc Martins a cliché, which is sometimes used ironically. In fact, while being questioned by a New York Times reporter, a Sub-Pop Records receptionist named Megan Jasper invented

“Grunge Slang,” a joke about how some people thought people from Seattle talked to each other. These phrases included “lamestain,” referring to an uncool person, “wack slacks,” when taking about old ripped jeans, and even said that hanging out was referred to as “swingin’ on the flippity flop.” Funny enough, many major newspapers took these claims seriously and published their Grunge stories with these words included.

Teenagers identified with Grunge music in many ways. They saw it as a form of punk that was fun and melodic, but also serious in nature. It was ironic, angry music, with very meaningful lyrics. It didn’t matter who you were at the time; if you were a teen or a parent with two children, you were into Nirvana.

One popular feature of Grunge shows was the mosh pit. The mosh pit involved a large number of people rushing up to the stage at once, and going wild, punching each other, jumping up and down, and even crowd-surfing.

In the high point of the craze, Grunge hits were topping the charts. “Teen Spirit” was the most popular, but other hits included Alice in Chains’ “Man in the Box,” Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy,” and Soundgarden’s “Spoonman.” Magazines like Blender and Rolling Stone were all over the Grunge craze, further popularizing the music.

When Cobain died in ‘94, many of the Grunge bands continued to make music, though the label of “Grunge” faded over time.

Recently, the Experience Music Project/ Science Fiction Museum (EMP/SFM) opened up an exhibit called “NIRVANA: Taking Punk to the Masses.” The exhibit is an interesting look at the history of Nirvana through interviews, pictures, and artifacts. These include videos of people involved with the Grunge movement, walls that show pictures of the band (as well as quotes from the members), glass cases holding guitars, clothing, things the band owned (including their MTV VMA Award), props they used onstage, selections from their own personal music library, pictures they took on tour, and even notes that Cobain wrote to people.

There is even a wall by the exhibit that shows a web of Seattle bands and the areas that they are from.

People are welcome to write in their own bands in their locations of origin in order to make current Seattle bands feel more connected to the greats that came before them. Several documentaries were made about the Seattle scene, one of the most famous being “Grunge: The Year That Punk Broke.”

The remaining members of Nirvana later released a CD version of their acoustic live show, titled MTV Unplugged in New York. The album won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album.

On Sept. 20, a tribute concert was held in honor of the 20th anniversary of “Nevermind’s” release. Novoselic was there to help play a few songs from the album, although Grohl was not there due to a scheduling conflict. Other performers included the Fastbacks, the Long Winters, Vaporland, Visqueen, Campfire OK, Valis, Ravenna Woods, and more.

A deluxe, remastered version of “Nevermind” went on sale that day. The show sold out quickly, proving once again that the people of Seattle, and indeed the world, will never forget the lasting impact Nirvana had on popular music.

The ears of today’s youth – stretched to the limit

A trend that is becoming very popular among teenagers and young adults is gauging ears or ear stretching.

Gauging ears is pretty much just expanding the tissues of the earlobe.

When someone starts stretching their ears they begin with the smallest size of gauges, which is 20 gauge or 20g. The biggest size of gauges is a 0g or a 00g.

As the size of gauges go up the number goes down. For example after 20g you would go up a size to 18g, then from 18g to 16g.

It is much safer to go one size at a time, and less dangerous to not skip sizes.

However, most of these people are not taking the right precautions. In fact 85 percent of people when stretching their ears do not use the correct tools and procedures.

A style that can’t be undone

In today’s world there are so many things people do to alter their appearance. Dying hair and styling it with heat based styling tools is a very common way to do this.

A common misconception people are lead to believe is that dying their hair can add nutrients and make their hair healthier.

According to the FDA two out of every five women in America dye their hair.

Dying hair uses a lot of chemicals that are not only bad for hair but bad for the body.

One of the most common chemicals used when dyeing hair is bleach. eHOW Style explains “hair bleaching works by using hydrogen peroxide to manipulate the hairs cuticle, forcing it to soften and lift. The bleach then penetrates the hair shaft and causes the color molecules to leave the strand” This is why hair that is regularly dyed turns gray faster. This means the people who dye their hair to cover grays actually create more gray hair.

Once hair is dyed it needs to be re-dyed or “touched up” as often as every six weeks.

Dying hair can also be a painful experience.

Martin’s original song is on iTunes

Three MTHS students in the past few years have had their work become widely known.

Ariana Deboo, a 2010 graduate, has been featured for two songs on iTunes. The first song is “Brand New Bike,” the other is “Swisher Sweet Dreams.”

Then for his Senior Project, Nick Terry made a mockumentary called “Prom Night” that is loved by MTHS, and he’s working on another movie.

In April 2011, another of the school’s students, Kaitlyn Martin, a senior this year, had an original song available on iTunes, and it has filled the entire popularity bar only a few months after it was released.

“Hey You” by Kaitlyn Martin is a song that Kaitlyn took only a week for her to write the music herself after teaching herself to play the guitar.

This original song was professionally recorded because of a family friend that wanted to help Kaitlyn get a song onto iTunes.

The recording took two full days, the first was playing around with background instruments to find any other instruments to play with the song to make it sound even better.

The second day was actually recording the guitar and vocals, putting the song together. “It was an exciting experience,” Kaitlyn says.

The recorders told Kaitlyn that it could take up to two weeks before her song was officially online, and when the end of two weeks was approaching, Kaitlyn started getting worried something had gone wrong with the song.

But then, an MTHS alumni, Shelby Windom, sent a text message to Kaitlyn, telling her she bought her song off iTunes and that she loved the song.

Kaitlyn told this to her family and her uncle immediately bought the song and played it through his outdoor speakers. “I was so overwhelmed and happy at that moment,” she said.

“When I was writing this song, I never imagined that it would end up on iTunes. It was a great experience seeing the song evolve from an experience my friend had, to a professionally recorded song,” Kaitlyn explains.

Kaitlyn’s musical career started on YouTube when she started posting videos of her singing either covers of songs, or her own original songs, and now she has her very own single on iTunes that

Next step of ‘All Shook Up’

Tryouts for the musical “All Shook Up” took place Sept. 13 through Sept. 15. Sept.

13 and 14 were the singing auditions, and Sept. 15 was the dancing auditions.

There are 10 lead roles followed by 27 ensemble, bringing a total of 37 that had to be chosen from the nearly 60 who tried out.

The roles were announced Sept. 16 after school and the many students that tried out crowded around the theater to see if they got a role in the musical.

The lead role is Serena Hohenstein, a junior, who will play Natalie Baker, the character that is a girl pretending to be a boy.

Chad will be played by Seth Brocherdt, senior; Jim Haller will be played by Michael Londino, senior. Senaiet Zerom, sopho-

more, will play Sylvia; Marisa Correa, senior, will be playing Lorraine.

Dennis will be played by John Moore, junior; Miss Sandra will be played by Miranda Troutt, senior; Mayor Hyde will be played by Zannie Faherty, senior.

Jordan McKinney, senior will play Dean Hyde, and Calvin Martin, sophomore, will play Sheriff Earl.

The musical will be playing after Winter Break in the new year starting Jan. 18 and will be going through Jan. 21.

The seniors who will be in their final musical while they’re in high school are Seth Brocherdt, Michael Londino, Marisa Correa, Miranda Troutt, Zannie Faherty, Jordan McKinney, Ethan Columbana, Devon Hickman, Jason Layne, Ivy Herold, Kaitlyn Martin, Karin Redden, and Terrah Short.

Puget Sound fishing season among the best in years Pinks and silvers were hot; Chinook season is open all of November

Coming off of a record-breaking pink salmon season in 2009, the 5.98 million pinks this season still put up a good fight for Puget Sound anglers.

In the first weeks of August, the resident Coho salmon (silver salmon that stay only in the Puget Sound) showed a great presence at Jefferson Head south of Kingston and off of Richmond Beach just south of Edmonds. Also making a strong appearance were the ocean king salmon (known as Chinook salmon).

A slightly late but good transition from pinks to ocean silvers occurred in late August and early September. The ocean silvers and pinks have ended their long journey and are now mostly in local rivers. Some late ocean silvers remain off of Edmonds and Mukilteo, however, and are still available for savvy anglers. The morning bite remains solid and recent rain and high tides have helped.

So, what’s next for Puget Sound fishing? Resident Chinook salmon will be open from Nov. 1 to Nov. 30 in Area 9 (from Edmonds to the shipwreck north of Meadowdale Beach).
