Remembering 9/11 Story by AnhViet Nguyen Illustration by Heidi Lara-Flores Hawkeye staff
The past 10 years have been somewhat of a whirlwind. It doesn’t seem that long ago many of us were waking up in the morning and turning on our TVs and seeing the World Trade Centers collapse. There have been so many changes to our world since the devastating September 11 attacks that seem to affect all of us in some way or another. Since then, the United States has engaged in two foreign wars in Afghanistan and Iraq attempting to combat Islamist militants and terrorist organizations. The wars have been costly as many American soldiers have lost their lives and the financial costs continue to mount. Thousands of soldiers have risked their lives in order to defend
America and its citizens. The post-9/11 wars are among the longest periods of warfare in American history. Every day, news networks and media outlets continue to report on the wars and it only adds to the frustration of countless Americans wanting the war to end. At the airport, security has been heightened in the hopes of preventing a catastrophic event like 9/11 from happen again. Although it causes a bit of discomfort for some travelers, most people would agree that airport security has been successful in achieving its purpose. Another change, the Patriot Act, has been a source of controversy since its implementation as well. Some argue that it has been helpful in detecting terrorist threats before they occur and protecting domestic soil. Others say it gives the government too much power and it infringes on the civil
liberties of citizens. On this 10 year anniversary of the tragic events on 9/11, Americans realize that we’re not as invincible as we thought we were after one of the most significant attacks on U.S. soil. But has everything been completely downhill since 9/11? Not necessarily. The heroic deeds that occurred on 9/11 and in the immediate aftermath should provide a glimmer of optimism. America has changed a lot since 2001. At the time, it seemed that time had halted and everything had changed forever. In reality, life in America has changed, but for the most part, things are still the same. To quote Charles Dickins’ “A Tale of Two Cities,” “It was the best of times and it was the worst of times.”
