Leading by serving the focus of the day Annual ASB gathering held in Terraceum By Samantha Clark Opinion Editor

Unbeknownst to most Terrace students, on Friday, May 13, next year’s ASB hosted the 5th Annual ASB WesCo gathering to more than 18 high schools from all over the state. John Norlin, the ASB and Activities director for Sumner High School titled the theme of the gathering “Servant Leadership.” Norlin, the featured guest speaker, discussed the finer techniques of leading a school. “Do justice to your position, be involved, help the school, and live up to the expectations you promised,” he told the gathered student leaders. Norlin also spoke on the importance of making every department within the school feel accepted and important. ASB Secretary, Bushra Raza took this gathering to heart, “We’re student leaders and we need to make sure everyone is welcomed and recognized.” Raza recognizes that many activities within the school go unrecognized, and to her that simply isn’t acceptable. “There is excellence within our school, in every department.” This excellence deserves to be recognized, she said. 2012 Senior Class President, Katie Wicklander said, “Friday went really well, it was organized differently than previous gatherings. This time instead of

multiple breakout sessions and multiple advisors, we had one speaker, John Norlin. Norlin spoke about not just serving your school but also how to achieve the leadership skills needed to serve the school. The whole event definitely showed us how to communicate to the students.” Wicklander strongly believes in next year’s ASB. “We decided that we needed to spend more time focusing on individual students and recognizing things like student and staff birthdays, student and staff achievements, and raising the attendance levels at events not specifically related to sports,” she said. “We really want to focus on making it a point to increase support for different aspects of the school.” “We don’t only want to focus on students, we also want to focus on helping staff members, for example, cleaning up after events so that custodians feel appreciated as well,” Wicklander said. “I think this all inspired us in a different way than before. We really want to help those who aren’t being recognized within our school.” 2011 ASB leader, Tina Rajan, also has high hopes for next year’s ASB, “I think they are going to do great, all they have to worry about now is beating last month’s assembly.”

Eighteen schools from around WA met in the Terraceum on Friday, May 13, for the fifth annual ASB WesCo gathering to discuss the importance of serving as leaders at school. John Norlin, Sumner High School ASB and Activities Director, spoke as guest speaker and a advisor to the event. Norlin spread the word on involving all school groups, in school events, making these groups feel important and appreciated at the school.

Sex offender from Terrace found dead in Oregon By Serena Urrutia Hawkeye Staff

Charles Lee Johnson, 74, also known as Chuck Johnson, a level 3 sex offender who at one time lived in Mountlake Terrace, was found dead recently in Oregon. Johnson was convicted twice, once in 1984 for indecent liberCharles Lee Johnson Level 3 sex offender ties, and again in 1993 for communicating with a minor for immoral purposes. “After serving his time for the 1993 conviction, Johnson was admitted to the spe-

cial commitment center in 1998, where he stayed until his release in June 2010,” according to a press release published on MLTNews.com. After Johnson’s release last summer, he failed to register and had a $50,000 warrant for his arrest from the Snohomish County Sheriff. “Johnson is a level three sex offender but he is not under any supervision. His failure to register warrant stems from the fact that he is homeless and therefore required to register with the sheriff’s office. Johnson has been missing for a few months,” according to MLTNews.com. Earlier this month, officials in Oregon indicated that they had found and identified Johnson. He was reported deceased in Tillamook, Ore.
