Homelessness can no longer be ignored However, what’s true about all conditions of homelessness is that it creates hardships for everyone affected by it.

We have students right at this school that are going through these hardships, one that most of us cannot begin to comprehend.

It’s an issue we can no longer afford to ignore. The report sheds light on the problems with homelessness and the individuals affected by homelessness.

However, the conversation can only begin here. It cannot end here as well.

We want to hear your thoughts and opinions about this important issue.

The rest of the issue has fantastic stories as well.

n the year’s first full size edition, we chose to feature an issue that does not receive near to enough attention that it deserves: homelessness in our community.

Homelessness exists in our school and in the area.

Homelessness is a fairly vague term. It includes living in cars, in tents or living in temporary housing.

PSAT/PLAN shouldn’t be forced on students

W

hile both the PLAN and PSAT tests are very helpful in preparing students for the future, District officials should not have made these tests required for all juniors and sophomores.

The testing on Oct. 16 took up more than half of the school day. And like numerous other testing days, the second half of the day was wasted by 15 minute periods. Many teachers simply gave these periods out as free time, a complete waste of time.

Furthermore, students should be mature enough to make their own decisions about preparing for their futures.

Not everyone is planning on attending a four-year university after high school, so why is everyone required to take the PSAT and practice for the college testing exam?

To make it worse, this was another fee students were required to pay. The $14 fee was another additional expense for families.

While it’s good that MTHS provides students with opportunities to prepare for the future, students deserve the right to decide what opportunities they should take advantage of to prepare for their future.

NOW Show wows

T

he NOW Show, held Oct. 16 for all freshmen during the PSAT/PLAN testing period was a fantastic way to help freshmen adjust to MTHS. The NOW Show, hosted by Penny Lefavour and produced by Barb Brister, was a huge success.

Featuring interviews of staff members and seniors that explained some of Terrace’s history, freshmen were introduced into Terrace’s legacy.

It was informative. It was funny.

It should again be established as an annual event. This year was the first time the NOW Show had been held in a long time.

It deserves to be brought back in the future so that all freshmen will get this insightful introduction into Terrace.

Substitute teacher Tom Boland brings excitement to each class he teaches

don’t know his real name at all.

However, substitute teacher Tom Boland is known universally as “the MagicMan.”

The words “substitute teacher,” immediately evoke negative connotations.

Substitutes are often disregarded as clueless, confused and lost.

Classes with a sub can be unproductive and chaotic.

However, Tom Boland has truly mastered substitute teaching, as if it were an art form. He takes command of a class in less than an hour using another art form: magic.

He starts class just like any other ‘sub’. He calls out each student’s name, announces the day’s agenda and passes out the worksheets or whatever else the teacher has left to occupy students for an hour.

However, he then adds a special surprise, telling students that if they get everything done, they can see something special at the end of class.

A Tale of Two Passions

“As a substitute I know that students like to have fun in class, more than usual, so I figured we might as well make it controlled fun.”

This “controlled fun” is a library of routines Boland performs many times per day. From rope, to card, to bunny and other tricks, students work hard for the period, in order to earn the excitement of a Magic Man routine.

Boland said he thought introducing magic into the classroom would make the day a bit more productive and a bit more bearable for everyone. “[Magic at the end of class] might not only be a little more fun than standing up there and making them do worksheets, but also it was an enticement for working harder,” Boland said.

Like many professions and interests, both teaching and magic have been described as art forms. When

homeless student numbers on the rise

On a chilly night in early autumn, about 60 people gathered in the basement of a Mountlake Terrace church to chat with friends, have a hot meal and seek shelter from the cold.

The Bethesda Lutheran Church has been holding these free dinners once a week for five years. They are open to anyone and draw a diverse crowd from the Mountlake Terrace Senior Center next door, families with young children and homeless persons who live throughout South Snohomish County.

“I would say a dozen to 15 or 16 people that we know [who come to the weekly dinner] are living in the woods or on the streets,” Pastor Malcolm Brown said. “Then there are those families that just need help. Every now and then we know of people who are living in their cars.”

A large problem in the United States, especially in the Seattle area, is the number of people forced to live on the streets, in public parks, or under bridges. In the last school year, a total of 386 students in the Edmonds School District reported themselves as homeless, including at least 10 at MTHS. According to LeAnne Brisbois, the Edmonds School District’s liaison to homeless students, this year many more students have already reported themselves as homeless than this time last year. So far this school year, 213 students in the district have reported themselves as homeless – including eight from MTHS. According to a report from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), there were 633,782 homeless individuals in the United States on a single night in 2012. Seattle was reported to have the fourth highest number of homeless persons in the country – 8,899 were counted as homeless in Seattle on the night the survey was conducted.

“I have a few friends who have seven day jobs that they go to every day and they are forced to live outside because they can’t afford a home yet,” Savage said. Savage is a 27-yearold homeless man who’s living at a campsite in Mountlake

reduced lunch rates is that many families don’t report that they need help.

“A lot of people don’t sign up for free and reduced lunch because when you fill out that application you’re required to write down your income,” Johnson said. “Not everyone is comfortable doing that. We have families that may be concerned about the information they share.”

However, Johnson assured that there is nothing to be concerned about.

“No one does anything with that information except qualify them for free and reduced lunch. Still, families get nervous about sharing any personal information if they’re unsure about someone knowing about it. We have a lot of people who should qualify but just don’t fill out the form,” Johnson said.

MTHS students also deal with the overall effects of poverty. While the economy has been slow to recover from the lows of the last recession, good paying jobs have been slow to come back, too.

As a result, MTHS has seen its rate of students on free and reduced lunch skyrocket. According to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, the government department which oversees Washington’s public schools, MTHS had an official free and reduced lunch rate of 31.7 percent last school year. That’s up from 19.9 percent in the 2007-08 school year.

“A lot of people who are privileged with having homes deem us a vagrants and vandals and all this nonsense,” Savage said.

“It’s quite slanderous to have people that go to businesses and look at us like they’re better than we are. In which case, they don’t know what’s going on. Some people didn’t have a mother or father (in their life) and were forced to be homeless.”

Another of the many challenges that homeless people often face is misunderstanding.

“Every day that I don’t have food, there’s these food bins that are around Mountlake Terrace,” Savage said. “When I went to the QFC to go get food out of there, I immediately got scolded by someone who works at QFC and was threatened to call the cops on. Even though the people know my situation, some people just don’t care.”

Savage and his friend Zara were both at the church dinner.

Savage has been homeless for almost four years while Zara has been on the streets for about six months.

“We can’t help it,” Zara said. “It’s not anyone else’s business what happened and why it is the way it is, and you shouldn’t judge anyone because of it.”

Zara also declined to give her last name to the Hawkeye.

Both Savage and Zara live at a campsite in Mountlake Terrace. They claim that there are a few more around Mountlake Terrace and Lynnwood in public parks and wooded areas. According to Zara, one of these camps is in Terrace Creek Park (Candy Cane Park).

Many of these camps aren’t immediately visible.

“The thing about homelessness is that it is so unseen,” Johnson said. “You may have no idea that the person you sit next to in class is homeless. I think that’s a big thing that Terrace could be more aware of – that we have classmates and friends who may be going through huge things and we have no idea.” H

The origin of Homecoming grew from the roots of the Today, students dance to artists like Katy Perry and

Eminem, compared to classic rock. The point is, Terrace has had many traditions come in and leave, so after 50 years of existence, could it be true that the meaning of Homecoming has changed as well?

To answer that question, it requires a leap back into time when Homecoming first originated. After talking to many people, an alumnus from 43 years ago shared her thoughts.

Sherry Newell, a 1970 graduate, responded to that same question by saying Homecoming is “a way to bring all of us together.”

In comparison, 2012 Homecoming queen Taylor Arbuckle said, “Homecoming is a time when students come together and celebrate their school.”

So it appears that what Newell interpreted Homecoming to be 43 years ago has still retained its meaning and value and therefore continues to be an underlying theme here: Homecoming serves to bring students together.

Whether MTHS has moved away from the idea of Homecoming as being a time for alumni to return or has forgotten some of its original traditions along the way, this time of year never fails to bring the students and staff of MTHS a little closer.

“You know, you’re in school for 12 years and when you walk through those doors and you get your diploma and you graduate, you may never see any of your classmates again. You probably won’t because you’ll graduate and everybody goes their separate ways and you lose touch. So, you know this is a great way to bring people back,” Newell said. igger than life and expectation, Terrace customarily created a mountainous structure of wood and flame to rally the students before the homecoming game. “In the parking lot, [students] used to have big bonfires,” alumnae and secretary Sherry Newell said. “Then everybody would get into their cars, or pile into a friend’s car, and get in a big caravan.” In addition, the bonfire was often fueled with energy as the rival school’s memorabilia and effigies were burned in the inferno. MTHS no longer has this custom due to the hazards. Schools nationwide have gradually seen an elimination of bonfires due to a number of accidents.

assing together before the Homecoming game, MTHS students would gather in the school’s parking lot and create a great parade en route to Edmonds Stadium via 212th. Cars would be lined with streamers and balloons to decorate the parade and create quick floats, creating quite a scene as they drove to the football game. In addition, the Homecoming King and Queen would ride together, as well as the Escorts.

he convergence of a sledge hammer upon metal creates a cacophony of sounds as it rings through the air along with wild cheers. A tradition that has been discontinued due to safety and liability issues, the Terrace Car Bash was something that was highly anticipated and enjoyed. Typically students would decorate and paint an old, beat up car with the colors of their Homecoming opponents and destroy and dismantle the car – usually raising funds for a local charity by charging a nominal fee for each bash.

Spirit drum

One of the few remaining rituals that still remain at Terrace is the pounding of the spirit drum. Organized by the band, students stroll the hallways and beat the spirit drum 24 hours until kick off of the Homecoming game. In the late 1960s, however, the drum rolled for the entire Homecoming week, 24-hours a day. H

Let’s face it, acne affects us all Some practical tips for dealing with life’s zits and bumps

Let’s admit it, we all struggle with acne at times. Everyone deals with breakouts differently, but to treat them correctly and effectively, it’s best to know what causes acne and what type of skin and acne you have.

Acne is caused when hair follicles clog with dirt or oil. Different types of skin can effect the severity of a person’s acne and how they should treat it.

The three types of skin are oily, dry and a combination of both. Skin can also be considered sensitive, or easily irritated by products.

According to Marie Claire Magazine, it is best to wash dry or sensitive skin just once daily. If you wash your face too often, important oils will be stripped. For normal skin, it’s best to wash twice a day, in the morning and at night. Those with oily skin should wash face once daily and after any workouts.

If you’re not sure what to wash your face with, look for a face wash that contains no parabens, fragrances or, soaps.

People with acne-prone skin should look for a face wash that contains salicylic acid, a medication that helps clear acne.

No matter what type of skin you have, be sure to be gentle. Scrubbing too hard or cleansing skin to much can irritate the skin and wash away all the good oils, making acne worse.

Many other things can cause a breakout, like oily hair and cosmetic products.

Another thing that can affect acne is a person’s diet. “Studies indicate that certain dietary factors, including dairy products and carbohydrate-rich foods – such as bread, bagels and chips, which increase blood sugar – may trigger acne,” according to the Mayo Clinic.

Remove makeup before washing your face to prevent it from spreading oil and dirt. Also remove makeup before going to sleep at night.

Acne can leave scaring so it should always be treated properly. To prevent acne scars never pop, scratch or pick at acne.

If your acne persists, remember that it is always best to visit a good dermatologist. H

DIY remedies for acne

People go to extreme measures to cure acne.

Some myths or home remedies may seem crazy, but there are reasons why they may work. These remedies cannot be scientifically or medically proven to work for the treatment of acne, but acne fighting ingredients are found in all of them.

Ever heard of putting toothpaste on pimples?

This can actually work. Since acne is caused by oil clogging the skin, the toothpaste dries up the oil and causes a reduced appearance of a breakout. If this seems like a good solution to you, be sure to choose a toothpaste that is all white in color and contains baking soda. Clear blue or green toothpastes don’t have the necessary ingredients to dry out acne.

Another remedy some people use is crush-

ing tomatoes and using them as a face mask.

Tomatoes are very high in acidity and the acid dries out acne. Vitamins and lycopene, naturally found in tomatoes, are commonly used in many acne medications.

Another growing trend to cure acne is using tea tree oil on the face. According to New York Times, tea tree oil, “has been shown to have both antibacterial and cosmetic properties.” H

Homecoming tends to be a blow to the wallet. This can be hard for students, especially those belonging to low-income families. A little help minimizing the cost of homecoming may be the difference between going and not going to the dance. Here are five tips to guide you on your way to an enjoyable – and inexpensive – homecoming night.

Reduce, reuse, recycle

M

ost dresses only get worn about once or twice before they make their way to the back of every teenage girl’s closet. Dresses can be expensive, so buying a new one for every dance is impossible for some. Solution? Swap dresses with a friend or family member. If you can’t afford a dress, borrowing one is the least expensive rout to take. That’s why Student Advocate Ashley Johnson offers 20-30 lightly used dresses, kept available in the counseling office for anyone who would like to borrow one. Those interested in taking advantage of the dress closet are encouraged to email Johnson or go in and take a look.

omecoming is not only more fun when spent with a group of friends, but can also be considerably less costly. Of the 41 people who answered the free response survey question, “How can you save money this year during homecoming?” 37.5 percent said they were going to save money by going in with a group of friends. Attending the dance with a larger party allows you to split costs and carpool, taking away from the overall expense of one person.

People close to you are more than willing to put in some time working on your hair, nails, makeup and whatever else you need to complete your look so you can feel great about yourself on your night out.

ou could go all out with dinner at a fancy expensive restaurant, but there’s no need to be so ostentatious, especially if you don’t have the money to. Go for what you can afford, whether it’s an average-cost restaurant, fast food, eating at home or snacking before and during the dance.

According to ASB public relations officer Aaron Castleton, parents will be supplying free snacks and punch this year at the dance. If you’re looking for a less expensive dinner route, check magazines, newspapers and the internet for coupons to different restaurants. Whether or not you make the pre-homecoming meal a priority, there are many different ways to save money on it.

Avoid the temptation to go overboard Through all of your excitement and fantasies, remember: homecoming is a semi-formal high school dance. There is no need to go over the top with expensive dinners, $100 shoes, or stretch limos. As long as you keep it simple, the cost of homecoming will stay manageable. You may even go home with money in your pocket at the end of the night. Try to focus on the experience instead of the financial aspects. Bigger and more expensive things are not always better. H

Make no mistake, she takes volleyball just as seriously as anyone else. As a team captain and physical leader for the Hawks, she routinely nails kill after kill against opponents with a deadly accuracy.

Madison also has the special opportunity to play with her younger sister Emily, a junior who is also on the varsity squad.

“She’s really awesome at volleyball. I treat her as I would any teammate, I mean, I don’t beat her up. I don’t really notice her as my sister, just a teammate. It’s not really awkward like it was at first,” Emily Eich said, laughing.

The positivity which surrounds her is not uncommon and is even more noticeable when she’s in her element, whether it’s on the court or at the range.

Students at Terrace may not realize it, but everyday they walk past someone who is one of the best in the world at what they do.

Madison Eich, senior, competes in archery events at some of the highest levels in the world. She qualified for the United States Olympic Archery team prior to the London Summer Olympics in 2012, finishing 14th out of all competitors, despite being one of the youngest competing at such a high level.

Eich first began archery as a youth, “I’ve always struggled [remembering] but this is my seventh or eighth year... I think...” she said, only half joking.

“You try out the year before the Olympics. The next [Olympics] are in 2016, so I’d be trying out in September of 2015. You fly to wherever it’s being held. I flew down to Texas A&M to make the 16 cut. You shoot a ranking round at first (like a normal tournament), but it’s not as long. They give you a little bit more spread out. You have two days for the ranking rounds. It’s 72 arrows within two days of the normal 144 you shoot in a day. (Yeah, it’s a lot). After the 72 arrows they cut you at the top 16.”

“They kept a board with the top 16 for both the women and the men. It was really kind of shocking because I always wanted to look back at that board to see where I was in the top 16. But my coach was like ‘Don’t look at that board, don’t even think about it. Just shoot your arrows, you’re doing just fine.’ Once you make that cut, it goes to the top eight, later in the year. Then the top eight compete for the top three, which is really the top four, but the fourth is an alternate who doesn’t really get to go to the Olympics,” Eich commented with a bit of a laugh.

Hidden dedication There’s a lot more to archery than just pulling a string back and shooting an arrow.

“The first step is your stance. Make sure you’re straddling ‘the line’ and be sure your stance and posture is correct.

“The second step is predraw. You get your fingers and hand in the grip of the bow, and you’re not fully drawing the bow.

“The draw is all the way back under your chin, then the follow through and release where you release the string and the arrow goes out of your bow,” Eich explains.

Despite all her national accomplishments, many of her fellow students remain oblivious to the fact that they pass by a national champion daily.

“I don’t really care what people think of me, it’s really for myself. I know I want to be the best, and I want to go to the Olympics. It’s always been my dream to just be in that spotlight, at my peak. I don’t know what my peak is [yet].” H
