TAILORED TO YOUR NEEDS A SMART HOME
The intelligence of a genuinely ‘smart’ home knows no bounds, says Shawn Ang, General Manager of JUNG Asia — the possibilities are limitless and dependant on the user’s imagination and requirements
by Zhuan Lee zhuan.lee@bizedge.comWhat is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a “smart home”? For most people, it could mean being able to turn on and off electrical appliances remotely through their smartphones. However, what a true smart home can do is way beyond that.
Originating in Germany and pioneering modern building technology since 1912, family-owned JUNG has been at the forefront of developing a comprehensive range of automation systems for lighting, blinds, air conditioning, security, and more. Known for innovation and precision, products from JUNG combine technical expertise and timeless design. They are sought after by top architects and interior designers worldwide, and are used at iconic locations globally, from the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg to the Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore.
We speak to Shawn Ang, general manager of JUNG Asia, to learn more about how a well-designed smart home system can elevate and future-proof our daily living environment. With more than 21 years of industry-specific knowledge in B2B sales, business development, and smart-building technology, Ang has been instrumental in executing projects for the well-heeled across the Asia-Pacific region.
1. In today’s context, what elements truly define a smart home?
In broad terms, automation has a rich history, particularly in factories, where diverse mechanisms respond to a button’s command. However, a modern smart home transcends mere automation — it possesses inherent intelligence. Our daily lives are seamlessly intertwined with smart devices like phones and watches. When personal devices are connected to a smart home system via the Internet, the system can recognise occupants through their individual devices. From there, it customises tasks like changing lighting and entertainment conditions based on the pre-set preferences of the specific person. Imagine returning home, opening the door, and experiencing

ambient lights turned on, your favourite music playing — everything tailored without the need for you to physically manipulate controls and switches around the house. Nonetheless you retain the option to override the system at any time or experiment with the settings whenever you feel like it.
Envision a life where your home anticipates your needs — the air conditioning activates when your GPS-enabled smartphone indicates you’re 2km away, the automated gate starts opening when your car is 200m away, and coffee is ready upon waking and so on, completely elevating your daily living experience.
2. Could you highlight key trends and preferences, showcasing variations in terms of home automation systems (e.g. most requested functions/elements) between different countries in Asia?
In a more mature market like Singapore, consumers prefer comprehensive smart home systems, evolving from basic controls to media management and information access. Smart mirrors displaying current temperature and outdoor air quality are gaining traction, particularly in China and Indonesia due to pollution concerns. Post-Covid, there’s heightened awareness of monitoring air quality and statistics that are relevant to daily well-being. Voice controls, now considered a standard feature in Taiwan’s smart homes, offer convenience, especially for users with impaired mobility.
In essence, I would say that the current key trends in the region include home automation systems capable of monitoring air quality, controlling media systems, and voice-operated functionalities.
3. What are some interesting requests you have had from customers?
A customer, having acquired a nine-room penthouse, sought tailored smart systems for each room, encompassing access times, lighting, and unique moisture controls. Leveraging his proficiency in system programming, the homeowner optimised the capabilities of the JUNG KNX system. This included managing intricate tasks like tailoring access permissions for specific individuals at designated times, programming diverse scene settings, and implementing real-time monitoring of indoor air quality parameters such as CO2 and moisture levels — where the system, in turn, intuitively adjusts dehumidifier and ventilation controls accordingly. Another memorable instance involves a homeowner in China (not a direct customer) who requested a smart system for a vast cellar containing more than a thousand bottles of wine. The system, capable of voice commands, allowed the owner to specify the desired vintage, prompting the system to retrieve the relevant bottle(s) without the need to search through the entire collection.
4. Switches often occur as an afterthought (or at times, even overlooked) in home design. What sets the JUNG KNX system apart, and how does it bring substantial benefits to homeowners?
Firstly, the patented LS 990 big rocker switches from JUNG LS Range consist of ‘big rocker’ style switches dating back to the 1960s, that integrate form and function. Evolving over 40 years, the LS Range is
Ang: A modern smart home transcends mere automation — it possesses inherent intelligence
crafted in both plastics and genuine metals like stainless steel and brass, reflecting JUNG’s meticulous attention to detail. JUNG is also the only manufacturer of light switches, sockets, and operating controls in the 63 original colours of Les Couleurs® Le Corbusier. With the exclusive rights, we incorporate architectural colour design into the field of electrical installation.
Secondly, JUNG excels in building automation systems, because we are one of the brands that collectively developed and pioneered the KNX open protocol. We therefore have first-hand knowledge of how to integrate and maximise the potential of the KNX system, because we have been involved in its programming right from the start. This puts us in a unique position because our engineers and programmers know at the back of their hands what works and what doesn’t, and are also able to ensure that our automation systems are future-proof.
Integrating third-party security systems with the JUNG KNX System allows remote home monitoring, including security camera feeds and door control. The JUNG KNX system, compatible with virtual assistants like Alexa or Siri, streamlines various smart home functions through the JUNG Smart Visu Server App app. The Smart Panel 8 touch display offers a comprehensive solution, featuring the Smart Vision graphical interface for easy KNX device operation. Whether using the wall-mounted panel at home, or managing the home
automation system remotely via a smartphone or tablet, users can control lighting, shading, temperature, music, and more. This personalised approach prioritises comfort, convenience, and home security, enhancing our daily living experience.
From a design perspective, our streamlined switch system eliminates the need for what we call the ‘piano effect’, where a long panel of switches is required to control multiple functions, resulting in a less desirable appearance and also a rather confusing user experience. Our F 40 and F 50 pushbuttons are highly acclaimed by architects and interior designers due to their sleek and versatile design, seamlessly integrating into virtually any aesthetic.
5. In what ways can an automated home contribute to fostering a more sustainable lifestyle, aligning with contemporary environmental concerns?
Contrary to some beliefs, a home automation system doesn’t consume more power than our daily household usage without the system. The JUNG KNX System optimises appliance usage, turning them off when not needed. For example, the living room’s heating or air conditioning can automatically turn off when a sensor detects no movement for 30 minutes, or adjust lightings and temperature conditions based on occupancy or the time of day. These actions significantly reduce energy consumption.
In addition, an efficient smart home system enables homeowners to be more aware of their home’s energy consumption by tracking usage in real time through energy meters (only available in European markets). These meters provide insights into everyday energy consumption, helping identify areas of high energy use and allowing for informed decisions on energy consumption and the implementation of effective energy-saving measures.
As a premium supplier of building technology, JUNG aims to achieve sustainability goals in both the manufacturing process and the efficient use of energy in product usage. In November 2021, over 50 individual products, from switches to sockets and KNX push-buttons, were awarded the Bronze Cradle to Cradle certification® following an elaborate testing process. This certification demonstrates that these products have no detrimental influence on people and the environment throughout their entire life cycle. All the materials used can either be returned to the biological cycle after use or remain permanently in a technical cycle through recycling and reuse. JUNG is currently the only switch manufacturer to have achieved this.

What is KNX?

In the early 1990s, 15 well-known names in the European electrical manufacturing industry came together to jointly develop an open standard that would enable different electrical appliances and systems to communicate more effectively and allow a standardised system of control in terms of home and building automation. According to statistics, around 62% of industry professionals across the globe choose to include the KNX system for their smart home projects. In simple terms, think of it as a language through which various electrical appliances and systems communicate. Here’s the low-down:
• Universal Standard: The KNX bus line is the main central nervous system for all automation, and serves as the worldwide benchmark for home and building automation, providing a standardised platform to control lighting, HVAC, security, energy, and more. It is unique for its open-source nature, allowing collaboration with KNX partners globally.
• Wired System: KNX operates through a wired system, ensuring robustness, security, and scalability for deployment across various settings, including residential, commercial, industrial, and maritime applications. Its advanced topology contributes to a reliable and versatile network.
• Residential Focus: With a 30-year track record of stable performance, KNX is a preferred choice in residential settings due to its excellent security and data protection features, crucial in smart homes. KNX Secure, in addition to its intelligence, implements the world’s first manufacturer and applicationindependent security standard for smart buildings. It ensures all home-related data are encrypted and protected, preventing unauthorised manipulation and recording.
• Efficient Communication: KNX facilitates seamless communication among diverse devices, enabling centralised control and monitoring. Unlike proprietary protocols, KNX is an open standard embraced by over 300 manufacturers. This ensures interoperability and a vast array of compatible products, creating an efficient and convenient building management system.

DESIGNING WITH COLOUR
Anchored in minimalism, V-ZUG appliances are understated and elegant but have a way of seamlessly integrating into a multitude of home themes
A brand that needs no introduction, V-ZUG designs products that bring simplicity to your home and inspiration to your kitchen. Armed with over 110 years of experience in luxury home appliances, it makes no compromise in quality, materials and sustainability, showcasing impeccable Swiss craftsmanship and durability.
Born in Zug, Switzerland, in 1913, V-ZUG has been synonymous with
quality and innovation in the world of household appliances. The brand has consistently pushed the boundaries of technology, setting new standards for performance and design. Its journey was marked by a commitment to excellence, with each appliance telling a story of Swiss precision and attention to detail.
Its design language is simple: Build solid products with the best innovations dedicated to enhancing the lives of its
customers with zero compromise in quality, materials and sustainability. Its appliances are carefully crafted to be as intuitive as possible so that they forge an emotional connection with its users.
Versatility in design
One of the standout features of V-ZUG is its ability to seamlessly integrate into just about any interior concept. The brand recognises that a home is a personal canvas and appliances should not only be functional but also complement the aesthetics of the living space.
To achieve this harmony, V-ZUG offers a diverse range of colours and finishes for its kitchen appliances. Designed to be a statement piece in any kitchen, the brand’s most powerful intelligent oven from the award-winning Excellence Line, the Combair V6000 comes in three glossy hues — pearl, platinum and black — which complement just about any kitchen design.
Perfect for any interior style from minimalist to maximalist, the Excellence Line appliances are based on a streamlined, unclut-
tered concept with flat panels that integrate seamlessly into any kitchen. All the design elements are harmonised across all of the brand’s offerings, which means that you can combine ovens, steam cookers, coffee centres and wine coolers in any permutation.
One helpful tip to make your appliances blend better into the concept of your interiors would be to conceal them within the carpentry. For example, V-ZUG’s dishwashers and refrigerators can be discreetly hidden behind the kitchen cupboards, if you so wish.
It makes opening them a fun surprise as you view the product’s glorious interiors. Its luxurious collection of refrigerators looks just as impressive inside as they do on the outside. The Supreme interior features impressive stainless steel finishes, fully extendable SoftTelescopic drawers, a patented infinity Shelf system that enables maximum height adjustment and an intelligent climate control system to circulate cooled air within the appliances so that food is prevented from freezing and constant temperature and humidity levels are guaranteed

across the entire cooking zone.
Colourful integration
Although V-ZUG’s appliances reflect a minimalist design philosophy, the brand stays committed to adapting to the ever-changing needs and preferences of its customers. Their streamlined design offers a high degree of flexibility, allowing them to seamlessly integrate into a wide range of design themes and elevate the visual appeal of any space.
“V-ZUG’s versatility is a crucial selling point and enables them to complement

— Jeremy Tay interior designer and director of Prestige Global Design
various design themes, making them suitable for a wide range of kitchen styles and configurations,” says Jeremy Tay interior designer and director of Prestige Global Design.
He adds: “By pairing V-ZUG appliances with a neutral colour scheme, minimalist cabinetry, and clean lines, the appliances just pop and create a highly refined and sophisticated atmosphere. Conversely, if the kitchen is designed in a classical theme, the sleek-looking appliances can add a contemporary touch to the social kitchen space without competing with other elements.”
If you wish to enliven your home with vibrant hues, it is better to consider your appliances first and incorporate them into the overall colour scheme. This approach allows for a cohesive, personalised space

reflecting the client’s taste and style.
For those seeking advice on integrating V-ZUG into a colourful home, consider using the appliances as accent pieces, Tay suggests: “One way to optimise the layout of the kitchen or other spaces while showcasing V-ZUG appliances and maintaining a colourful style, is by creating a focal point. This can be achieved by placing the appliances in a prominent location, such as on a kitchen island or a dedicated appliance wall.”
Hilary Loh, director of 2nd Edition, expresses a similar sentiment. “By showcasing V-ZUG as a collection of beautiful objects, you can create a blank space be-
tween appliances and colourful interior elements.”
Her advice is to create contradiction and contrast to bring out the beauty of the appliances. “Strong veins and bold-coloured marble countertops and backsplashes, paired with matte surface cabinetry, help to highlight the minimalist aesthetic and glossy appearance of the appliances,” says Loh.
When it comes to furniture, V-ZUG can work with virtually anything as long as the theme is anchored. If you’re not a fan of contemporary, Loh suggests sourcing for more mid-century modern furniture which has an easy retro vibe, while Tay suggests some stylish chairs with an eclectic feel to personalise the look.
To further enhance the colourful style, accent lighting can be used strategically to highlight the textures and colours of the materials used in the kitchen, while also drawing attention to the sleek design of V-ZUG appliances. “Under-cabinet lighting can illuminate the countertop and backsplash while creating a warm and inviting glow. Additionally, pendant lighting above a kitchen island or dining table can add a pop of colour and make a focal point that complements the V-ZUG appliances,” says Tay.
Of course, the finishing touches to creating a synergistic look that gels the overall look together are the personal touches; decorative elements such as artwork, plants or decorative bowls, that add character and style without taking up too much space. “Go for an oversized artwork in a vibrant colour or a gallery wall with multiple pictures, they become a focal point of the room,” says Loh.
Additionally, choosing a colour palette that compliments the personal items and unique pieces can help tie everything together and create a cohesive look. “By being mindful of personal items’ size, placement and colour, it’s possible to integrate them into the design without overwhelming the space,’’ advises Tay.

By integrating a diverse range of colours, whether through bold accent walls, playful furniture pieces, or intricate textile patterns, you can instantly enhance the ambience of any room, making it feel more inviting. Selecting colours that complement your current decor can be challenging. As a general guideline, opt for hues that harmonise with the existing colour palette. A walk through Michael Fiebrich’s black-and-white apartment off Nassim Road feels like embarking on a journey that intertwines his passion for exploration and his penchant for collecting artefacts. He gestures towards the carpet and recalls his trip to Agra, India, nearly two decades ago. Later, he reveals stumbling upon an Aboriginal artwork during a visit to Melbourne. “I adore how the rich hues of the rug complement the artwork, creating a cohesive ensemble,” he says. “And the warmth of the reds and oranges against the lush orange cushions, adorned with ikat fabric from Indonesia, adds another layer of vibrancy to the space.”
Acknowledging that his apartment may predominantly feature various shades of green, he reveals his knack for infusing pops of reds and oranges, situated opposite on the colour wheel, to create striking contrasts. He says that while green saturates every corner, from room to room, the overarching theme resembles a vast expanse of blue sky punctuated by myriad shades of green. “I found it to be a delightful contrast,” he adds.
Not only does Fiebrich’s home showcase an array of artefacts, it also displays sculptures gifted by friends like Stefanie Hauger’s hot pink OMG sculpture. Known for her artistic prowess, Hauger clinched the UOB Southeast Asian Painting of the Year award in 2013, along with UOB Singapore Painting of the Year. Her accolades continued with another win in the 2019 UOB Painting of the Year.

He brings this knowledge to every corner of his home. At every turn, guests can witness how the colours seamlessly complement each other. Whether it’s a painting, vase, sculpture or antique, each item has been carefully placed, contributing to the warmth that permeates the living space.
As an entrepreneurial interior architect specialising in hotel and resort design, Fiebrich is driven by a passion for innovation and a relentless pursuit of crafting immersive experiences through architectural design. With a track record adorned with numerous design awards and widespread publications, he has established a global reputation for creating dynamic spaces that captivate the
senses, whether they aim to excite, entertain, or induce relaxation.
He runs his own company, Michael Fiebrich Design, which is a full-service architectural interior design firm with strongly developed specialties in guestroom design, specialty suites, spas, as well as innovative dining, bar and entertainment venues. With 20 years of experience in hotel/resort and residential design, the firm has worked with numerous groups and professionals worldwide.
Fiebrich, who has resided in Singapore for the past three decades, has moved residences four times, with each abode earning recognition in international design publications. He shares that the sole memento from his home, Texas, is a chandelier, now proudly suspended above his dining table.

of design and the art of integrating colour into a neutral home.
Is it harder to design your own home as you are so used to designing for other people?
Actually, I find it easier to design my own personal space because it reflects [my partner’s and my] personal style. With a residential

client, we have to extract that information — how they live, if they entertain a lot, what’s important to them — [before] we can create a design that suits their lifestyle. When I’m designing for myself, I already know the answers to those questions.
When you saw this empty space, what went through your mind?
The first thing we noticed were the large volumes, natural light and the incredible green views. That can be rare in Singapore so that really drove everything for us — layouts, colour selections, materials. We get a multitude of colour changes in the sky throughout the day but there’s always the beautiful greens. I knew that was going to be the driver to create a peaceful retreat. My partner and I both have demanding careers, so it’s important for our home to feel like an escape where we can relax.
As you have done a lot of hotels and residences, how much of the hotel feel did you want to bring into this space?
Hospitality design is our speciality, but I think hospitality also applies to your home. We entertain a lot, so the design, particularly in the common areas, allows the flexibility for

different occasions. For smaller gatherings, we can have an intimate dinner and feel very comfortable, but we can also open up the whole house and spread out onto the terraces for large parties as well. For me, that hospitality element just means that you always want your guests to feel absolutely comfortable.
It is obvious looking around that you’ve brought in things from all over the world — can you tell us more about that?
We are hopeless shoppers! I think probably one of the biggest blessings of my career as a designer is travelling internationally and being inspired by all the different cultures we get to visit and work in all over the world. It’s also really important for me to bring in a sense of place to what I’m designing. I believe a hotel in Jakarta shouldn’t look like a hotel in Chicago, and vice versa. There should be a connection to the city and the culture of that particular place and I feel the same applies to our homes.
When you’re creating a space that’s meant to be pleasing, surrounding yourself with things that are familiar to you plays a very big role in that experience. There’s a lot of psychology to that and everything here has a story. It’s that painting we found together in Australia or the furniture we found shopping in Marrakesh or the rug we found in India — everything has a memory. When you see those familiar pieces, it really gives you a sense of peace and comfort.
How much is too much? During Covid-19, perhaps everything leaned towards minimalism. Do you think the pendulum swings towards maximalism now?
I have to admit we have many things in storage, so, sadly, this isn’t even all of it. Having said that, I do try to avoid clutter. I mean, we’re big lovers of art, objects, furniture pieces — everything from modern to antique — but personally I prefer a space that feels curated, not crowded. Too many different elements, especially if they’re not in harmony, can be disconcerting to the eye.
Editing is very important and we do change things out periodically. We have quite a few special pieces but I don’t need to have them all out all the time. I try to curate things so that they all work as a family. It can be an eclectic family for sure, but overall it should be pleasing to your eye. Even if you have pieces that are a bit unexpected, that contrast

can be exciting. You’ll see quite a few unexpected accent pieces and colour pops here in the flat, but everything sits well together.
I love collecting religious statuary — everything from Christian to Muslim to Buddhist — which a lot of people find surprising to see as decorative accents in a home interior. I just think they’re all such beautiful artistic expressions.
Have design trends changed since Covid-19?
That is a big question that [people have asked]: How do you design differently post-pandemic? What’s the emotional change you see in your clients?

My answer is always that the principles of good design — like scale, proportion, harmony — never really changed. Things that are important for design, are always going to be important, pre or post-pandemic.
Did the experience of feeling like you have more personal space, more room to breathe and not feeling overcrowded become more important to people post-pandemic? Probably. We were all a little more nervous about being in crowded spaces during and after that period.
We were also probably a little stressed emotionally after what we all went through for so long, so the pleasing effect that comes from good design principles became even more important. That didn’t happen because of the pandemic, those things were always there. That’s always been good design.
How a space makes you feel isn’t an accident, especially with hotel design. If we’re designing a spa, you want the guests to enter and immediately feel relaxed and peaceful and if we’re designing a food
and beverage outlet, or maybe a bar, you may want them to walk in and feel energised and excited. So those are two very different moods that you’re creating through your design choices and that’s tied to everything; layout, scale, proportion, colours, style. That’s the wonderful psychology behind design.
How do you persuade individuals to stray from the tried-and-true neutrals?
The whites, the beiges? People gravitate towards those hues because they fear colour. What advice would you offer to encourage someone to try using colours in their living space?
I’ve never been afraid of colour but honestly, if you look around my own personal space, the general scheme is actually fairly neutral. I do love a strong colour pop or accent, but starting with a nice, clean palette always makes the colour choices even more special. Your eye just appreciates them more. We use a lot
of colour blocking in our work, where you might have a generally neutral palette, but then you work with one particular colour family to create a contrast. That could be a colour from the view or landscape, which is what we’ve done here, or a colour you choose to energise the space, but sticking with that family of colours throughout a space can be really powerful as opposed to a space that’s multi-hued.
We bought this beautiful tomatocoloured Agra rug in India many, many years ago, and then later found a large Australian Aboriginal painting in similar tones. I love how they both really bring that colour accent together in the living room, and how the warm tones contrast with the cool green tones from outside. It’s a very old trick of museums actually; if you want the heroes in the room to be noticed, keep everything else simple.
And what has kept you in Singapore?
I’ve been in Singapore for 30 years now, which is more than half my life! I’m originally from Texas and went to Architecture School at the University of Texas, Austin. One of the largest hotel design firms at the time was based in Dallas and I went to work with them straight out of college. At the time, they didn’t have a strong Asian presence but Asia was opening up and really starting to boom. I was travelling back and forth from Dallas to Asia and absolutely loving it, so the CEO asked if I would move to Singapore and help expand the office. I took the opportunity and moved here, stayed with them for many years, and then started my own firm in 2007. I guess I’m just one of those expats who came for the adventure, fell in love and never left.

CELEBRATING A NEW CHAPTER
Organising a luxurious and memorable housewarming party is a wonderful way to begin your journey in a new space, but it doesn’t have to be a daunting experience
by Zhuan Lee zhuan.lee@bizedge.comA new home not only marks a change in physical space but also represents new beginnings and significant life milestones, making a housewarming celebration more than just another party. It’s an opportunity to share the joy of a fresh chapter with friends, family and even neighbours, creating connections in the community. Yet, orchestrating an impressive housewarming involves a delicate balance between expressing the homeowner’s personality and style without overwhelming guests. A memorable housewarming event can be tasteful without elaborate grandeur, fostering a warm, welcoming and cosy ambience that transforms the house into a home. Haven speaks to Olga Iserlis — author, events extraordinaire, founder of Adagio events and go-to expert for top luxury brands, for professional advice on how to organise the best housewarming party.
1. How can homeowners infuse a sense of luxury into their housewarming party while maintaining elegance without being excessive?
One of the first things that a housewarming party needs is a theme, and regardless of what it may be, tasteful execution involves focusing on subtle yet impactful elements. “Trying too hard” does not pay off. What is more important is for us to be proud of our homes, and be comfortable and authentic in how we welcome guests to it. Luxury isn’t about expensive brands screaming from all over the room, [which] does not necessarily mean good taste. On the other hand, of course, clever and tasteful touches, such as unique collectibles, statement pieces,
luxurious candles and fresh flowers, can elevate the overall aesthetic without appearing over-the-top.
2. What are some creative ways to add a personal touch to the party and make guests feel truly welcome?
You’re inviting a curated guestlist of your closest companions into a deeply personal space, and personalisation is key to enhancing intimacy. I love handwritten cards and notes — these can be done as early as the party invites. Placing cards at the dinner table is a thoughtful added touch. To take things to another level, personalised drawings or poetry that the guests can take home would be very meaningful. I also love creating bespoke menus, including signature cocktails, as part of the experience. Crafting bespoke menus, complete with signature cocktails, adds to the overall experience. You can align these with a narrative, sharing stories inspired by recent travels, childhood memories, or any meaningful anecdotes. Let your genuine personality shine through while creating beautiful memories with your guests.
3. What are some tips on preparing a gourmet spread that will leave a lasting impression on guests?
Being a foodie, I always curate menus for my events, including house parties. The key is to focus on quality ingredients and presentation. Uncomplicated and easy-to-serve items made with seasonal ingredients, such as artisanal breads, cheeses, fresh berries and young herbs, always take centre stage over typical or elaborate catered hors d’oeuvres. Opt for caterers or
private chefs who share your taste and have cooked for you before, rather than ordering ready-to-serve platters via delivery. The menu should align with the desired atmosphere or party theme, not standing alone but enhancing the overall experience. For instance, playing the role of a barista for the night can be a fun and engaging experience to break the ice and spark conversations.
4. What etiquette tips can you provide on receiving and giving gifts during a housewarming celebration?
Always graciously express your appreciation for your guests, and present each door gift with a personalised “Thank you” note or gesture. Guests, in return, should select thoughtful gifts aligned with the host’s tastes and lifestyle, taking cues from the party theme. It is also considerate to enquire about specific preferences or gift registry lists to ensure your gift aligns with their needs. When pressed for ideas, a good go-to would be a luxurious home fragrance which can be personalised with inscriptions, or a good bottle of wine. Sending the gift in advance or after the event is also an option. Don’t forget to include a handwritten note whenever possible.
5. What are some of your suggestions on how we can add a touch of olfactory magic to our parties?
I’m a passionate advocate of scented candles and home fragrances, recognising the profound impact of our sense of smell on memory. I tend to opt for sophisticated scents like jasmine and sandalwood, citrus and bergamot, or lavender and cedarwood to establish a welcoming ambience. I also love mixing different scents by strategically placing diffusers or scented candles throughout the space for a subtle infusion of fragrance. My preference lies with exceptional brands renowned for their long-lasting and evocative scents, with Guerlain being a favourite, alongside others like Claus Porto from Portugal.
6. What are some of your favourite places to shop when you need to find decorative items that will accentuate your parties?
I enjoy collecting home items during my travels, favouring high-quality products from upscale retailers, as well as unique finds from local markets, artisans and artists’ studios. These discoveries become cherished collectibles, each carrying a story of how it found its place in our home. I particularly love notebooks and diaries, often sourced from Bynd Artisan and the Singapore National Gallery. For a touch of ultimate luxury, I adore throws such as my Hermès cashmere throw that holds sentimental value. I also curate coffee-table books that reflect my personality. These carefully chosen items in lounging areas speak volumes to guests, and we should take pride in their selection and placement.
