INTRODUCING

Nice Nice, the home of cycling. Capital city of the French Riviera, 5th largest city in France with 350,000 inhabitants, and 2nd biggest French tourism destination with over 5 million visitors per year the city of Nice is home to a splendid climate and hosts a wide variety of international sports events all year round. Ironman, Nice-Cannes Marathon, 2012 World Ice-Skating championships, Tour de France of Sailing since 2014, the European Football Championships and Nice UltiMed – these international sporting events have made Nice a go-to destination for sports fans over recent years. The Women’s Football World Cup and Ironman 70.3 World Championships as well as the Top 14 final and Rugby World Cup are all on the schedule in years to come, culminating with hosting the Football during the 2024 Olympics. Cycling has played a key role in the sports calendar in Nice for over 70 years now

44

with the finish of the Paris-Nice pro race in March, a Team-Time-Trial stage on the Tour in 2013, the famous Transvésubienne raid, the Tour Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur and soon the Grand Départ of the Tour de France in 2020. Situated between the sea and the mountains, the Nice region is a stunning natural environment for cycling. The roads and mountains are ideal for training and for racing, with trails in the Parc du Mercantour also available for those who prefer to ride off-road. The Haute Route Alps from Megève to Nice plays an important role in the dynamism of the region and the two last stages will be an opportunity for riders to discover the beauty of the region. Passing first over the famous Col de la Bonette at 2715m and then staying in the resort of Auron before finishing their adventure atop the Col d’Eze with a view over the Mediterranean sea and panoramic view of the French Riviera from the Cap Ferrat in the west to Italy in the east.

Quartz Health Programme The Haute Route is delighted to have entered into a partnership with the Ultra Sport Science Foundation to provide a stateof-the-art health monitoring programme to Haute Route Alps riders in 2018.

Registration

The Quartz programme is a useful adjunct to your training build-up and participation in the Haute Route. It helps you to be aware of how your body is coping with your training, keeping a detailed log of your relevant medical history and providing you with preevent and on-site tests to ensure you are fit and ready to go.

Monitoring

The Quartz programme is offered free to 50 volunteer Haute Route Alps athletes in 2018 as we test it in the Haute Route series for the first time. It is run by Athlete for Transparency which works with the Ultra Sport Science Foundation in its mission focused on the enhancement and distribution of scientific and medical knowledge related to participation in ultraendurance sports.

Objectives

Monitoring and protecting the health of Haute Route cyclists throughout their training and during their Haute Route event. Helping to ensure that we compete in a doping-free world.

48

Riders are invited to fill in a detailed and confidential health questionnaire online using the Sport and Health Online platform, also known as SHOL.

DURING TRAINING Riders are invited to update their profile with any relevant information during the build-up to the Haute Route – for example a flu infection that might be treated with antibiotics, details of a new dietary supplement or treatment of a knee injury. FINAL MONTH Blood test - A month before the Haute Route begins, riders will be asked to undergo a free pre-event blood test at their local surgery or laboratory. Samples will then be sent for analysis with the results updated on your SHOL account. REGISTRATION DAY Blood test – Riders undergo a second blood test which will then be compared to the first test to check for any abnormalities. Doctors review results to classify riders into one of four categories: Normal, Atypical, Potential Disease, Abnormal linked to potential doping. DURING EVENT Medical staff can access SHOL account if necessary should anything untoward or an accident occur.
