Preschool

Conducted at the Tilden Community Center, 310 River St.

Still time to register!

The Tilden Community Preschool Program provides a variety of experiences that contribute to the growth and development of the preschool child and serve as a foundation for later school experiences. These programs recognize that:

• Each child is a unique individual and develops at his or her own rate.

• Parents are a child’s first and most important teachers.

• Play is a child’s work and is seen as a productive avenue for learning.

• A group experience fosters independence, builds self-confidence, and develops self-identity outside of the child’s role in his or her family.

• Early literacy skills are the basis of success in reading.

HASTINGS SENIOR EXPO
May 8th 5-7pm Tilden Community Center 310 River St. Hastings, MN 55033 For More Information: 651-404-7947 EVENT FREE
Wednesday,

Message from the Superintendent

As noted in the March 17th Raider Update, the Hastings School Board recently adopted legislative priorities. I wanted to provide additional context for these priorities.

Continue to hold harmless on Compensatory Education funding

Compensatory funding is school funding based on free and reduced lunch (educational benefits) applications. With universal meals provided, the number of applications has significantly decreased, which would decrease our funding. The hold-harmless language was initially applied to ensure there weren’t significant changes, with meals provided at no charge. The continuation of hold-harmless language would continue funding at the levels prior to universal meals.

Fully fund unemployment and Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST)

Effective May 28, 2023, all support professionals in MN are now eligible for unemployment during the summer months. Provisions were made to assist school districts with the increased costs associated with the law change; however, the additional support is temporary and will become the full responsibility of the district when the allocated dollars are exhausted. In addition, earned sick and safe time provides additional parameters for allowable leave.

Fully Fund the READ Act

The language from the 2023 session was historical as it addressed literacy. It is also three-pronged as it addresses teacher training, the employment of or contract with a literacy lead, and an approved curriculum.

1. Teacher Training: $16.7 million was appropriated to provide teachers with training on evidence-based reading instruction approved by MDE. Training is for all K-12 intervention teachers, pre-K-3 classroom teachers, special education teachers, curriculum directors, instructional support staff who provide reading instruction, and employees who select literacy instructional materials for a district. This training includes phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, reading fluency, reading comprehension, and culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogy.

2. Districts are required to employ a literacy specialist to support the READ ACT by August 30, 2025.

3. Curriculum Opportunities:

Beginning July 1, 2023, $35 million has been allocated for districts purchasing new literacy curriculum. While the dedicated funds are historical, they do not meet the needs across our state.

Reduce or close cross-subsidies for Special Education and English Language programs

Minnesota districts are required to provide special education services for students, but they don’t receive enough state or federal funding to pay for it. Schools are pressed to use their general funds for special education, which often causes districts to cut programs or ask local homeowners for higher property taxes. Lawmakers call this funding gap the special education “cross-subsidy.” The 2023 session drastically increased subsidy dollars; however, the request for years has been to fully fund. The 23’ session brought the cross subsidy from 6.43% to 44%, which will increase to 50% in 2027.

No unfunded mandates and honor local control and managerial rights

The 2023 session was historic for many reasons. One was the unprecedented number of mandates not accompanied by additional funding.

Repeal the requirement for boards to negotiate e-learning days and class size

E-learning days were first introduced as a way for districts to continue students’ learning, albeit not in comparison to in-person instruction. Additional language and parameters are costly and may outweigh the benefits.

Increase student-centered learning opportunities by creating alternative pathways to graduation and allowing students to earn credit for learning wherever it occurs

Locally elected school boards are in the best position to work with their staff, students, parents, and communities to address local needs and challenges. This priority advocates for increasing student-centered learning opportunities by creating alternative pathways to graduation and allowing students to earn credit for learning wherever it occurs.

Minnesota Wild “Faceoff For Fitness” at Pinecrest Elementary

At Pinecrest Elementary, students enjoyed hosting a “Minnesota Wild Faceoff For Fitness” school assembly on Friday, March 8th. The assembly focused on promoting a healthy lifestyle, emphasizing the importance of a balanced diet and regular exercise. To wrap up the event, a friendly shoot-out competition took place with the Wild mascot, Nordy, guarding the goal. Two Pinecrest students, Beau Dyressen and Ayla Quiring, participated alongside former Wild player Stéphane Veilleux and former Minnesota Whitecap player Kali Funk. The students are thrilled to use the street hockey equipment donated to Pinecrest and receive a pack of Wild hockey cards containing fitness and nutrition tips. Go Wild!

Teaching Respect at McAuliffe Elementary Shapes Responsible Citizens

This past school year, our elementary schools have dedicated a position to support students’ emotional and behavioral understanding. Teaching and modeling respect to elementary kids is vital for their social and emotional development. By instilling values of respect early on, children learn to appreciate people's unique needs, understand how personal boundaries are different for each person, and communicate their needs effectively. Respect cultivates empathy, promoting kindness and cooperation among classmates. It fosters a positive classroom environment conducive to learning. Moreover, respecting people helps children navigate society with confidence and integrity. Through interactive activities, role modeling, and consistent reinforcement, our staff helps nurture respectful behaviors. Teaching compassion and respect lays the groundwork for building strong relationships, fostering teamwork, and preparing children to become responsible, empathetic citizens in their communities.

HHS Student-Athletes Recognized by Minnesota State High School League

In March, two HHS student-athletes received state-level recognition from the Minnesota State High School League. Senior Noah Quigley was honored as one of 32 “Triple A” award recipients. This Academics, Arts, and Athletics award recognizes high school seniors with distinguished accomplishments in all three areas. Junior Lukas Foss will be honored as one of 35 state recipients of the ExCEL Award. This Excellence in Community, Education, and Leadership award is a unique recognition program designed exclusively for high school juniors who are active in school activities, leaders in their schools, and who demonstrate a strong commitment to community service. Congratulations, Noah and Lukas!

Exploring the Love of Music Through Guitar Lessons at Kennedy Elementary

We believe in nurturing a love for music among our students, and what better way to do so than by exploring the world of guitar? This is the second year we have offered this additional after-school opportunity to our 4th-grade students. Students involved in the program are introduced to the basics of guitar, including the parts of a guitar, chords, tabs, and playing simple songs. They can build up skills such as switching chords, reading tabs, and playing with proper technique to work toward an informal performance. Students have additional opportunities to participate in music with their peers while pursuing that passion through new instruments that are not used by students in our daily music curriculum. Pinecrest and McAulliffe already had this experience this year, and it will soon be coming to Kennedy. We appreciate all the work our elementary music teachers, Lisa Poncelet, Jonah Conway, and Emma Auby, do to make this experience possible and for the support from Hastings Community Education.

Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE)

Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) provides special services, including evaluation and intervention, to children who demonstrate developmental delays from birth until kindergarten entrance. The ECSE team and parents will determine the appropriate evaluation measures to determine the child's skill level.

ECSE staff will provide services to eligible children from birth to 3 in a natural environment, such as home or daycare. To address each child's individual needs, a variety of classroom options will be provided for children over the age of 3. Services and program goals will be outlined in a written document developed by parents and ECSE staff.

Minnesota Department of Education's Read Act

Last spring, the Minnesota legislature passed the Read Act, a part of the monumental bill that allocated millions of dollars to go toward education in the state. The Read Act included parameters for districts to provide professional development to teachers around the Science of Reading, a research collection showing how kids explicitly learn to read. Hastings will be training our PreK-5th grade teachers, all reading interventionists, and the special services teachers in our district in the coming year. The Read Act also gave direction for the Department of Education to select research-based curriculums for elementary schools to adopt in the coming years. Hastings will select a curriculum from this list and begin implementing it next school year.

Buildings and Groups Improvements Planned for Summer

The buildings and grounds department is preparing for improvements in and around school facilities this summer. Here are a few highlights of the projects planned to be completed over the summer. The high school will receive new carpet in the commons and fine arts area, new tuckpointing on the exterior, new shower valves in the locker rooms, and new bleachers in the field house. The grounds around each site will be improved by adding irrigation, sodding, and replacing nearly 70 trees that have been affected by the emerald ash borer. The lining of the middle school pool will be resurfaced. New cameras will also be installed district-wide, and many interior and exterior doors will be replaced across four buildings.

Hastings High School Announces Two National Merit Finalists

Hastings High School is proud to announce that we have two National Merit Finalists this year. Congratulations to Michael Davis and Benjamin Thome on their selection for this prestigious designation. Both of these outstanding students are now eligible for consideration for National Merit Scholarship awards. According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, winners are chosen based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. Scholarship recipients are the candidates judged to have the greatest potential for success in rigorous college studies and beyond.

Congratulations, Michael and Benjamin. Well deserved!!

Hastings Middle School Discovers the Power of Positive Impact

Hastings Middle School is digging deep into discovering the power of impact this school year. Students and staff are recognized monthly for their positive contributions to Hastings Middle School. Each student is learning about impact through our Raider Way programming as our student body discovers how WE have an impact on others. With a partnership with the City of Hastings, United Way, and Hastings Family Service, our 8th-grade students will serve our community by picking up trash and pulling weeds in various locations around our Hastings community.
