Preschool
Conducted at the Tilden Community Center, 310 River St.
Still time to register!
The Tilden Community Preschool Program provides a variety of experiences that contribute to the growth and development of the preschool child and serve as a foundation for later school experiences. These programs recognize that:
• Each child is a unique individual and develops at his or her own rate.
• Parents are a child’s first and most important teachers.
• Play is a child’s work and is seen as a productive avenue for learning.
• A group experience fosters independence, builds self-confidence, and develops self-identity outside of the child’s role in his or her family.
• Early literacy skills are the basis of success in reading.

ISD 200 Levy Update
Hello Raider Families and Community!
The past three years have gone extremely fast, and I am so grateful for all the support you have shown our students and staff! As you probably know, this past June, the school board voted to approve the existing levy set to expire. This option was created by the past legislative session and allows a school board to approve a renewal of an operating levy one time, with the same parameters, and brings in about $3M annually in revenue. However, it is only the base. With the increases in costs (i.e., supplies, services, salaries, and benefits), relatively stagnant declining enrollment, and additional unfunded mandates from the state, it will take more revenue to sustain what we have and look to what could be. You will want to pay attention as the board will continue movement looking at a Technology levy for this
Message from the Superintendent
Hastings Community,
I am absolutely honored and proud to serve as the new superintendent for Hastings Public Schools. Prior to joining Hastings, I have served as an elementary teacher, middle school teacher, community education director, elementary principal, middle school principal, and eleven years as superintendent. My first 10 days in Hastings have been filled with meeting people and seeking to understand. The welcome that I have received has been second to none. I have repeatedly heard an unprecedented level of pride throughout the community with the following statements:
November. You may remember the board and me talking about how this option will provide much-needed additional financial support. The community survey suggested a high degree of support for approving this type of referendum, and Hastings is one of only a few Districts that does not have such a levy in place to support students and staff.
As of July 1, Dr. Tammy Champa has taken over as superintendent of Raider Nation. She is a veteran educator and leader, and I have every confidence that she will strengthen the District and keep the focus on the main thing...students. Please take the opportunity to meet her.
Bob McDowell, Ed.D.
“...we really have amazing students” ..the staff in Hastings is outstanding” …it’s a great community”
As the new superintendent, I am committed to working tirelessly to ensure that our district provides the best possible educational experiences for our students, led by a phenomenal staff and leadership team. Students will undoubtedly be at the heart of all that I do.
Please know that my door is always open, and I am looking forward to meeting all of you. In addition, I will be looking for as many engagement opportunities as possible.
Together, we’ll make the 2023-2024 school year a great one.

Technology in the Schools: iPads
As we continue to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of education, we wanted to provide you with an update on the impact of iPads on learning at our schools, while emphasizing the importance of maintaining a balance between screen time and traditional learning methods.
iPads have proven to be incredibly impactful in enhancing our students’ educational experiences. Through the use of educational apps, interactive resources, and multimedia tools, iPads have fostered engagement and creativity in the classroom. Students are actively exploring concepts, collaborating on projects, and demonstrating their understanding in innovative ways. The versatility of iPads allows for personalized and differentiated instruction, accommodating diverse learning styles and abilities.
While we celebrate the benefits of iPads, we also recognize the value of a well-rounded education that encompasses traditional methods of learning. It is crucial to strike a balance between screen time and offline activities to ensure a holistic approach. Our teachers are committed to integrating a variety of learning experiences that include hands-on experiments, group discussions, reading physical books, and outdoor exploration. We believe that this balance promotes critical thinking, problemsolving, and social-emotional development.
To further support the balanced use of iPads, we have implemented guidelines and strategies that foster responsible device use. Our students are taught about digital citizenship, emphasizing the importance of using technology ethically, responsibly, and safely. By nurturing their understanding of responsible device use, we empower them to make informed
choices and navigate the digital world with confidence and integrity.
We encourage ongoing communication and collaboration between parents, teachers, and students to ensure a healthy relationship with technology. Engaging in conversations about screen time limits, setting boundaries at home, and monitoring the content accessed on iPads can reinforce responsible use and maintain a healthy balance.
We are committed to providing a comprehensive and wellrounded education that prepares our students for success in the digital age while honoring the benefits of traditional learning methods. We believe that by striking this balance, our students will develop critical skills, resilience, and adaptability, equipping them with the tools they need to thrive in an everchanging world.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership as we navigate this exciting educational journey together.
Buildings & Grounds: Completion of 2017 Bond Projects
Facilities and maintenance continues to be a very busy department. Not only are bond projects coming to an end, but Long Term Facility Maintenance and Capital projects also continue. With the regional and national focus on clean water, we are happy to report that the drinking fountain/bottle filler project is completed at the middle school and Tilden. The middle school is also getting a new dust collector for the technology education area, along with the high school’s new carpeting.
The community will also begin to see the approved outdoor updates taking shape. These include improved landscaping at buildings, which will then lead to updates to our irrigation systems, so we can keep the grounds looking good throughout the year. We have also continued our focus on safety items, including expanding our district-wide camera systems and increasing the number of security cameras. We are also rekeying the interior locks in our buildings to add a layer of protection and simplify the ability for emergency personnel to access our buildings if needed. In addition, the doors at Kennedy, Pinecrest, and the middle school will be replaced.
Finally, we look forward to some interior improvements. The middle school media center has been emptied in preparation for a full renovation. Also, for the upcoming year, due to the loss of our space at the national guard armory, the gymnastics team will be moved to the south gym for at least one season. And last but not least, Tilden will see a classroom remodel so that we have additional space for a full-size preschool classroom.
These projects are so important in supporting the success of our students from pre-k to 22. And, they would not be possible without such generous support from the community. Many of the items above are able to be purchased with money from the 2017 bond, which sets us up to use other dollars, in the budget, for learning and the sustainability of programming.

The Benefits of Engaging Students: How to Make Content Engaging
Starting the New School Year Off Strong
In today’s rapidly evolving world, academic success alone is not enough to prepare children for the challenges they will face in their personal and professional lives. Recognizing the significance of holistic development, we have begun emphasizing the teaching of social-emotional skills in our elementary schools. These skills include skills for learning, empathy, emotional management and problem-solving, and friendship skills.
Social-emotional skills cultivate emotional intelligence in children, enabling them to understand and manage their own emotions effectively. By learning to identify and regulate their feelings, children become more resilient and capable of coping with stress and adversity. This emotional intelligence also extends to their interactions with others, promoting empathy, compassion, and kindness, which are crucial for building positive relationships and fostering a harmonious classroom environment.
Research has consistently shown a positive correlation between social-emotional development and academic success. When children are equipped with social-emotional skills, they can better concentrate, manage their time effectively, and collaborate with their peers. By promoting self-discipline and self-motivation, these skills empower students to set goals, persist in the face of challenges, and ultimately excel academically.
Elementary school can be a challenging environment where conflicts may arise. Educators provide students with the tools to navigate conflicts peacefully and constructively by teaching socialemotional skills. Children learn how to communicate effectively, actively listen, and seek fair and inclusive resolutions. Such skills foster a supportive and inclusive atmosphere, reducing instances of bullying and promoting a positive and healthy school climate.
All Hastings elementary schools use the social-emotional learning curriculum Second Step, which focuses on teaching positive relationship skills, managing emotions, and setting goals. This program is taught during morning meeting times and incorporated into our daily learning. Students are also recognized regularly for demonstrating positive attributes at school with recognition tickets and classroom or school-wide celebrations.
Social-emotional skills are not only vital during childhood but also have a profound impact on individuals’ lives as they grow into adults. These skills lay the groundwork for success in higher education, careers, and personal relationships. By cultivating self-awareness and empathy at an early age, children develop a strong foundation for becoming responsible and well-rounded adults who can navigate challenges, work collaboratively, and contribute positively to society.
The Future of Athletics: How Technology is Transforming the Experience
Raiders Athletics continues to leverage technology to enhance the experience of athletes, families, coaches, and spectators. We currently partner with a wide variety of different software platforms. They provide a diverse set of tools that impact the effectiveness and efficiency of our entire department. Internally, tasks that used to be laborintensive or time-consuming have become faster and more secure than ever before. Externally, technology services allow us to connect with athletes, families, and our community in various creative ways.
From a management perspective, the athletic office uses sport technology platforms to schedule and publish games, manage athlete registration and team rosters, and coordinate and pay officials. We also use technology to inform, celebrate, and communicate
with stakeholders. For example, we post resources, directories, and sportspecific pages on our athletics website. We share news and special moments on social media and create attractive online newsletters to share seasonal stories. Fans and families can purchase game tickets and season passes online and watch live-stream videos of games in progress. Athletes complete seasonal surveys, watch videos of games, training sessions, and games on HUDL, and take IMPACT concussion tests. Coaches complete professional development requirements, access team video, and statistical analytics, communicate with players and teams, and conduct conference and section meetings. Even our scoreboards run on wireless technology. No matter what your role in or connection to HHS athletics is, you benefit from the technology partnerships that we have in place.
It’s incredible to consider that registration was done in person and on paper only ten years ago. Game schedules were printed on posters. Information and changes were sent by mail, memo, or “phone trees.” There was no website or social media to provide information and relatives out of town couldn’t see games unless they were here in person. We are grateful for all of the benefits that technology services provide. They continue to enhance our internal processes and improve the athletic experience for our students, families, coaches, and community.

Hastings Special Services Assistive Technology
All students receiving special education services, as outlined in an Individual Education Plan (IEP), must be provided needed Assistive Technology (AT) as determined by the IEP team to have access to a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). In fact, when the IEP team meets for the annual IEP meeting, assistive technology must always be considered. Assistive Technology can be as simple as access to larger grip crayons or as complex as a voice-activated communication device. According to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA,) AT is defined as “any item, piece of equipment or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of children with disabilities.”
When a student can benefit from lowtech AT, the team may consult the student’s therapists, such as speech/ language clinicians, autism specialists, and occupational therapists, as initial resources. Low-tech AT is typically thought of as minor modifications
to a student’s everyday life. They do not require the use of a computer or computer software. Examples could include the use of portable whiteboards, documents in large print, adapted eating utensils, or alternative keyboards. Hightech AT includes the use of computers, iPads, and computer software and apps. Examples could include voice recognition software, scanning switches, word prediction software, voice output devices with dynamic displays, or speech synthesis.
1. When trialing a new device: Is the device working like you hoped it would?
2. At the beginning stages of using the device: Is the student showing improvement in the compensated skill?
3. Periodically while using a device: Is the student maintaining success?
Whenever it is decided that assistive technology will benefit a student, the team MUST take data on the usefulness of that device or strategy. This data will benefit current teams in telling them whether the AT is working and future teams telling them what has already been trialed. Data needs to be taken at the following times:
In Hastings Public Schools, we are proud to offer a large variety of AT devices to our students who require them for needs in areas of vision, hearing, speech communication, mobility, and acts of daily living. If you have a child receiving special education services in Hastings and have questions about AT for your child, please contact your child’s case manager for more information.

Hastings High School: Systems of Learning
Looking back to the spring of 2020, schools across the state were moved to distance learning. Here at Hastings High School, the scramble was on to be able to provide the necessary technology to our students. Over 600 students were sent home with a district-issued Chromebook at that time. These devices were taken from limited classroom sets and several hotspots to ensure connectivity throughout distance learning. As the spring progressed and it was apparent that students would not be returning before the end of the year, that number grew until the school was confident that all students could continue their education.
As the following year began with a hybrid model, the need for this technology continued. Students and staff alike were able to overcome tremendous challenges by developing new systems of learning. We learned to be innovative and efficient. With this change in education, our use of technology has transformed into what it is today. Our students have access to their learning with the click of a button. Their access to teachers and support staff is at an all-time high. As we move forward, we are excited to continue with this level of technological advancement. Our levels of student engagement continue to improve. Teacher feedback is prompt, and students can reflect on their progress more effectively.
We have committed to continue our efforts in providing appropriate access to technology for our students. Our 1:1 device initiative has become the standard with like-sized districts, and we look forward to finding sustainable financing.
CAD and 3D Printing to Make the World More Accessible
8th graders at Hastings Middle School can think beyond the classroom with an exciting CAD and 3D printing project that asks them to make the world a better place for someone they’ve never met. They get a case study of a 3-5-year-old with a mobility challenge during this project. They will never get the chance to meet this person but do learn what medical condition is, making a task difficult for them and some of their likes and dislikes. From there, they work to build or 3D print something that will make the world a more accessible place for that child. Their teacher, Mark Cernohous, said, “I like to see how creative they can get with their projects.” All of their builds were then displayed during a project fair where teachers could ask questions about their designs and builds.
Changes at Hastings Middle School
We are getting very excited about the upcoming school year at Hastings Middle School. We are welcoming a new Assistant Principal, Scott Addyman. Scott is a Hastings resident and has been the Student Success Coach at Pinecrest Elementary. He can’t wait to work with our HMS students and staff and will bring an innovative mindset to his new position. Scott has affected so many of his students at Pinecrest in building solid relationships, solidifying student growth in academics, and leveraging technology. He believes technology is not just a means to an end; it has become an integral part of our lives. Integrating technology into our classrooms and curriculum prepares our students to navigate the digital landscape with confidence and adaptability. Welcome to HMS Scott! We will share more about Scott in our HMS communications.
We are seeing a lot of changes around our building. All of the trees in front of our school were cut down. Unfortunately, these were ash trees infected with Emerald ash borer. We will get new trees and a sprinkler system in front in the near future.
Another big change inside the building is the switch/flip of the main administrative offices and counseling offices. The counseling offices will now be across the hall and connected with the nurse’s office. In addition, our intercom system was installed so visitors can communicate with our welcome center.
We are also updating our media center and replacing the carpeting in the auditorium. We are excited about the updates to our learning environment at HMS. Thank you for the continued community support!

Color Theory Meets Music Theory
This year Music met Art for the 7th graders in Kendra Berg’s classes at Hastings Middle School. Through a new Hastings technology called Specdrums, students were able to learn color theory with Ms. Berg and interact with paintings they made to create an original music piece through special Specdrum rings that paired with the classroom’s ipads. Ms. Berg said, “It’s so cool to hear all the songs that kids came up with. Some sounded like they should be theme songs to tv shows. They were awesome!” Students could make loops, beats, and original sounds to create the right song to match the tone of their painting. QR codes were then attached to their paintings for a digital art show that all middle school students could view.
Virtual Field Trips in our Elementary Halls
Students got to put their tech skills to the test this Spring as they made a virtual slideshow of a National Park of their choosing. They spent time researching and putting together a series of slides to show all they had learned about their park. Their teacher Josie Stephan shared, “They recorded the info, planned a script using a storyboard, and then created an iMovie using pictures from their park! I felt like it gave kids a new voice in their writing and motivated them to become experts. I feel like it allowed every kid to be successful in their writing! ”They also had a chance to share it with their classmates using QR codes. Students could use their iPads to scan the QR codes and let their classmates take virtual tours of each other’s National Parks. Their class map was displayed in the hallway for other classes and school visitors to enjoy.

Escape Rooms Go Digital
You may have gone to an escape room where your goal was to solve all the riddles before the time ran out to beat the clock and win, but some lucky students at McAuliffe had the Escape Room come to them. This past school year, students had the chance to review concepts through digital escape rooms. Their teacher, Katie McBride, said, “They love it, and it’s challenging.” Puzzles were posted in their class on Seesaw, and they worked to see if they could escape all the puzzles before time ran out. It’s a great way for students to think about things from new and different perspectives to achieve a goal.
