What’s on at HASLAND CLUB Come and celebrate the festive season at Hasland Club, there is sure to be something for everyone.

Have you called at the club recently? We are evolving, with different nights, spaces to rent, big bands, craft ale, a great selection of ciders - the list goes on!

We are looking forward to a busy Christmas, New Year and beyond with a great selection of entertainment. Brand new for Hasland, Laffa Cake comedy Club will be sure to tickle your funny bones.

Then a great live indie pop gig featuring Chesterfield / Sheffield band Hideaway Club. Along with great Tribute acts, Northern Soul, a Tap Takeover by Derbyshire craft brewers, family parties and disco's, Wednesday night bingo and monthly midweek morning cinemas - and you never know, Santa may be around later in the month!

All this plus our usual Saturday Night entertainment and live Sky sports, including main events available on our BIG SCREEN. Football will usually take priority, however we do have separate TVs available in the lounge area to show other events. There's sure to be something for everyone.

Featuring: Eddy Brimson - An award winning comedian, appearing on BBC radio four and BBC Scotland. Since turning to comedy in 1999, Eddy Brimson has well and truly established himself on the live circuit and is regarded by some as one of the leading headline comics in British comedy and the world. Ben Briggs - A professional comedian for over 15 years, Ben has worked as both an act and compere for some of the biggest clubs in the UK and abroad.

He is brash, honest, razor sharp and at times dark but always very, very funny. Award-winning, stand-up comedian and Hull local, Jack Gleadow, brings high-energy performance and a cheeky persona to entertain. Compere - local comedian and overall funny man, Greg Phillips.

Welcome to Hasland Magazine December is here again! It’s been a super busy start to the festive season already. The Hasland Magazine Christmas Market took place mid November, spread across two locations this time. It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying the early festive spirit and supporting all of the stall holders who sold some beautiful gifts and crafts.

It’s also been a very bad couple of months for many businesses and residents. The October flooding caused problems for many people including some of our regular advertisers ‐ Rose Cottage Doggy Day Care and Blanc. We wish everyone affected the best of luck as they rebuild their businesses following repairs. Another of our regular advertisers, Ideal Flooring, has been offering free carpet to residents affected by the flooding, such an amazing gesture.

This issue contains our usual December gift guide. Please try hard to support local small businesses this Christmas, it makes all the difference when we shop local. If you fancy a festive panto, there are two advertised in this issue. Chesterfield Theatres are proud to present Aladdin and Mansfield Palace Theatre are offering Beauty and the Beast ‐ why not try both!

This issue Scott Antcliffe shares his beautiful photography of Ladybower Reservoir, with tips on enjoying a lovely walk around. He has also shared his review and photography of local band, The Rosadocs. Thanks so much Scott.

The What’s On Guide is full of Christmas cheer. Hasland Club are hosting a children’s Christmas Party as well as a Christmas Eve family disco. There are more Christmas Markets to shop on and even a Flower Arranging demonstration at Hasland Methodist Church. Spital Arts are also hosting Chesterfield Choral Society for a concert.There is also a Light up a Life Memorial Service at Hasland Baptist Church on the 10th December.

Whatever the season brings you, I hope you enjoy it. If it’s not your favourite time of year there are lots of local groups offering a cuppa, a chat and a listening ear, including ‘Let’s Chat’ every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month at the Hub at Hasland Club 10am‐12noon.

Open Sesame on Panto at the Winding Wheel Magic, mystery and mayhem await audiences this December as producers Paul Holman Associates return with a sumptuous and spectacular offering of the pantomime Aladdin at the Winding Wheel.

Aladdin is a family adventure that starts in Widow Twankey’s launderette and journeys onto the iconic cave of colourful gems and jewels before it’s all aboard the magic carpet ride of fun and fantasy!

The stars of this year’s show will include the fabulous Anne Hegerty as Empress. Instantly recognisable as The Governess from ITV’s long running, multi‐award‐winning programme, Anne is a firm favourite with millions of fans of The Chase.

Hugely recognisable from presenting and hosting, Nigel Clarke will take control of the magic carpet as he stars in the role of Aladdin. Nigel is well‐known for Cbeebies The Baby Club and The Toddler Club.

Audiences can expect at least a minion impressions as Britain’s Got Talent semi‐finalist Tony Rudd brings his mimicry to the role of Wishee Washee. Actress Jo Osmond will be flying in from LA for Christmas to take on the role of Spirit of the Ring. Jo has appeared in Harry Potter, Disney’s Dumbo and Dr. Who to name just a few.

Don’t miss out on Mansfield’s Panto fun Mansfield Palace Theatre are very excited to have launched their first Christmas production of Beauty and the Beast. The run began on the 25th November and will continue all the way through to New Year’s Eve. One of the most popular fairy tales of all, Beauty and The Beast is the story of Belle who finds herself imprisoned in an enchanted castle by a prince who has been transformed into a hideous beast by an evil sorceress. Can Belle see beyond the beast’s appearance and fall in love with her captor? Will the beast return to the world he once knew and win the hand of the girl who has melted his heart?

Taking the role of Belle is Issie Davis, who is no stranger to the stage after having roles in musicals including Spring Awakening, His Dark Materials and The Witches of Eastwick. Playing Beast will be Shaun Dalton. His theatre credits include Bill Kenwright’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and Kinky Boots. He previously starred in UK Productions’ national and international tour of Beauty and the Beast so is no stranger to his role. Pantomime Awards winner, Nic Gibney also joins the cast as Polly la Plonk. Nic reached the semi‐finals of Britain’s Got Talent last year as Harmony Hard‐Up in the panto inspired group, Damenation. He was also awarded the gong for Best Ugly Sisters 2022 for his role in Cinderella at Bath Theatre Royal. Add to this the amazing duo of Dani Harmer (CBBC’s Tracy Beaker) as Fairy Bon Bon and comedian Adam Moss as Louis La Plonk.

Dani tells us: “I love Beauty and the Beast. It is one of my favourite stories and I am really excited about playing Fairy Bon Bon this year. It is my first Christmas in Mansfield so I can’t wait to spend some festive times there. I hope to see you all at the theatre!” Adam adds: “I've seen the script so know you’re in for a real treat.”

Mayoral Matters Once again my duties as the Mayor of Chesterfield have kept me very busy but happy. I also have my usual councillor duties including being a part of councillor committees, dealing with residents queries or requests for help ‐ for instance in council house issues ‐ and lots of other casework.

A number of different organisations are welcomed into the Mayors parlour on a regular basis. This helps them to link in with council services and hopefully get a more joined up service for residents and ratepayers across the town, and a cuppa and a biscuit as well.

I recently had the pleasure of officially opening the Derwent Rural Counselling Service (DRCS), in the old registrars building on Beetwell Street. This is a charity working with people with mental health problems, young and old. Remember when no one used to mention mental health problems or issues? Fortunately those days are behind us, although many mental health issues have not been made any easier by the pandemic and the isolation and lack of family contact that went with it. The need is desperate in this area for a number of our residents and the public services and charitable sector are struggling to meet the demand. Help is available with a referral from your GP or self referral.

I attended the excellent chair based exercise session which meets regularly in the Hub at the Club (the old working men’s club on Hasland road). The sessions don’t only provide a bit of exercise, but also offer a chat over a cuppa and a cake or biscuit in a very friendly atmosphere.

All are welcome.

Chesterfield Mayoralty has become good friends with Theresa Peltier, the first black High Sheriff in the post. Theresa acts as the Kings representative in relation to law and order and has a long and distinguished career in that field. I was only too pleased to be at her civic service in Derby Cathedral and I look forward to working more closely with her.

I was asked what are my favourite events so far ‐ here are a few of them: Welcoming children from schools and Rainbows groups, including Hasland Infants and Hasland Rainbows, into the Mayors parlour. The children asked a lot of questions and one was sticks in my mind. “How old are you” one boy asked, “how old do you think I am” I foolishly replied. The guesses started at 16, quickly went up to 30 (great so far) but then climbed to 100 and 130 years of age. I thought it was a hoot although school staff quickly changed the subject!

I have two regular events that I try to get to, both at Chesterfield football club. The first is the deaf club run by Derbyshire Police which I thoroughly recommend. The second is a dementia awareness group,

run by ex professional footballers including an old old pal of mine and long service player at Leeds and Chesterfield ‐ Sean O’Neil.

Sean had over 400 appearances. I am only too happy to support both of these groups.

I am also working with Juniper Training, who come into the town hall regularly. They work with teenagers who may struggle with the problems of getting a first work placement. Myself and Mayoress Suzie work with the staff to try to motivate them and encourage them to keep at it.

Finally, I recently had the great privilege of welcoming Honor Graham into the Mayors Parlour. Honor is 100 years young and as bright as a button. I chatted to her for about 2 hours over a cuppa and the best afternoon tea that M&S could provide. Honor had been a councillor for a number of years and also the Mayor of an authority in London, so we genuinely had loads to talk about and I was really sorry when it had to end as we could have gone on chatting into the evening.

Defibrillators donated

by United Cast Bar Ltd Local engineering Company United Cast Bar Ltd, in partnership with CorMed‐DX, have generously donated two portable defibrillators to Chesterfield Walking Football Club.

The defibs were given to Chesterfield’s Senior Spirites Walking Football Club after one of its members, Mel, had a Cardiac Arrest at a match and stopped breathing.

Fortunately, one of the players knew how to do CPR whilst another player got access to the Club’s only defibrillator unit. It was only the timely actions of the other players Two CellAED Defibrillators being handed to the Senior Spireites Club with James Brand, MD of that saved his life.

Farewell to Brian We were very sad to hear of the passing of Brian Beeton on the 13th October. Brian and his family held the newsagents in Hasland for many years and we featured a story about the shop and Brian’s family in a previous issue. Many residents have great memories of Brian and his wife Anne.

Brian’s loving son Tim organised a minutes applause for his Dad during the Chesterfield Football Club game on the 5th November, as Brian was a huge fan of the team. Brian was even laid to rest surrounded by blue and white flowers, a CFC scarf and his signed football.

Tim said “Thanks so much to everyone who has been in touch with messages of support and love for us all. Dad’s send off was an emotional but very fitting tribute. We’ve raised over £1300 in Dad’s name for Dementia UK ‐ thanks to all those who contributed.”

We’d like to send our best wishes to all the family.

Quiz duo win talkSPORT National Regular quiz going brothers Michael and Colin Palmer recently hit the jackpot whilst taking part in a favourite quiz at the Shoulder of Mutton pub in Hasland.

In October they were pleased enough to be the winners of the £20 bar tab prize in the local, but were shocked to later find out that they had actually also won the National prize. Each week teams login and complete the quiz online as part of the talkSPORT national quiz.

They were presented with a cheque for £500 by Chris from talkSPORT during his visit to the pub. They are pictured above with Julia, the landlady at the Shoulder of Mutton. Join in the fun every Sunday night!

Hasland Hawks sponsored for success Established in 2007, Hasland Community Football Club was formed by a group of volunteers looking to create a club following a core set of values, rules and regulations ‐ whilst also offering a safe, enjoyable environment for young people, of all abilities, to play football.

The club was formed with just one Under 15s team playing in the Rowsley & District Youth Football League's second division.

Over the years the club has expanded with junior teams of all age groups and at the start of the 2023‐24 season the club has 23 junior teams ranging from the under 7s to under 17 age groups, of which there are 4 all girl junior football teams. Last season Hasland was the first club within the North Derbyshire Youth Football League to have an all‐girls football team competing in the under 7 age group.

When a team is established they are called ‘Hasland Community FC’.

If there is a second team in that age group they are named ‘Hasland Eagles’. All girls teams are called ‘Hasland Community FC girls’. Within this year’s under 10s age group there was already all three of these teams but there was enthusiasm for a fourth. But what to call them?

The club decided to follow the bird of prey theme and name them ‘Hasland Community FC Hawks’. 13 players have joined the new team with the majority playing football in a team for the first time. With Jamie and Pete as the coaches a lot of hard work has gone on over the summer months to get the team ready both on and off the pitch as equipment and kit needed sourcing.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship for the home and away kit, provided by Lilleker Bros Ltd, an electrical and engineering contractor based in Rotherham. Thanks also to Cathy Smith of Belmayne IFA, based in Dronfield for the team jackets. At under 10s teams play 7v7 matches.

This means the jackets will be a welcome addition to the kit as we head into the winter months to help keep the lads warm and look the part when they turn up for matches and training.

Popular Chatsworth Road boutique Blanc suffered huge damage during the floods caused by Storm Babet. They have been unable to reopen and the repairs to the shop will take some time to complete.

Hasland Methodist Church News Messy Church Sadly because of the recent floods we were unable to hold our planned Messy Church on 21st October and postponed the session. We had a good response and 24 children with parents had booked. We will contact all those who showed interest with the next date and look forward to seeing you all in 2024.

Act of Remembrance The Coffee Shop has become more popular each week, a friendly buzzing atmosphere. It is always so good to see our regular customers, ‘Danceworks parents’, visitors and friends from the Hasland Community, who drop in to enjoy welcome refreshments and sample a variety of homemade cakes.

On Saturday 11th November a tribute was made for Remembrance Day at coffee shop. Rev Margaret Mwailu played appropriate music followed by the last post and all attending the coffee shop, young and old, respectfully acknowledged the two minutes silence at 11am, then Reveille was played.

Soon after customers continued to enjoy their company and refreshments.

We thank all who were with us for making that recognition of Remembrance possible and welcome you all back to future Saturday mornings at Coffee Shop.

Christmas Tree Festival 2023 On Saturday 2nd and 9th December you can view the displays at our Christmas Tree Festival, while enjoying refreshments at the Coffee Shop.

The schools, organisations and the businesses in Hasland will again be displaying a tree of their choice. In previous years the festival has been well supported and over 20 trees have been displayed and viewed. The church will be open every afternoon for visitors to view the trees. All will be made welcome.

A message from Reverend Margaret Mwailu A fitting Remembrance Sunday It was good to see many at the War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday. We were privileged to have the Mayor of Chesterfield, Cllr Mick Brady join us, also Cllrs Dave Allen, Stuart Brittain and Amanda Serjeant all mingled with the crowd. We were delighted to see the uniformed organisations and their leaders march from the Village Hall to join the large crowd already waiting at the War Memorial.

Thanks to the Brooks family who in memory of Tony decorated the Park Gates and War Memorial with Poppies. Finally, thanks to all who took part in preparation for the day and on the day itself. It was truly a fitting and respectful Act of Remembrance for past and present heroes and heroines

The Wonder of Christmas! At the start of December, our thoughts focus more on Christmas Season. In some places there are signs of Christmas early, and before we know it, Christmas decorations are up!

There is increased selling and buying of Christmas Cards – soon cards will be arriving through our letterboxes.

Similarly, many people put up their Christmas decorations and trees at the start of the month to mark the official countdown to Christmas Day. By the time you read this, awe‐inspiring and creatively decorated Christmas trees are adorning Hasland Methodist Church. These trees are decorated by Hasland community; please don’t miss a visit, they are awesome! I suggest you walk around the church and observe each detail of the Trees, you may discover that each tree is unique and tells a story. You may wish to stand or sit still, focus your attention on the lights of the trees. There is something unique about looking at a Christmas tree with its lights and decorations. There is a sense of awe and wonder followed by peaceful moments!

Often, many people feel rushed, hustled and bustled during Christmas Season. Others may find Christmas time difficult for various reasons.

Whatever our different situations are, may the Season of Christmas with decorations all around us, move us to appreciate the wonder of the Season. ‘Wonder’, as we recall the first Christmas! And as we hear the Christmas story again, may we experience, peace and joy. ‘Peace’ as we remember the words of the angels, “Peace on Earth and goodwill to all people”, and ‘Joy’ as we open our Christmas presents under the Christmas tree. As we exchange gifts let us not forget the indescribable gift offered to all – Jesus Christ, whose birthday we celebrate on Christmas Day! We welcome you to the Community Carol Service on Christmas Eve at 6pm, and later from 11:30pm, a mid‐might Holy Communion. You are also invited to Christmas Day Service at 10am. Come and join the celebrations.

Community Choir support Dementia UK A wonderful charity choir concert ‐ An Afternoon of Song ‐ was enjoyed by a great crowd in September at St Paul’s Church, Hasland.

Hasland Community Choir performed many of their favourite songs as well as serving delicious cakes and hot drinks.

A raffle was held with lovely prizes and all proceeds to Dementia UK. A fabulous total of £650 was raised.

How does your garden grow?

December is probably the last chance to have a reasonable day to have a good tidy in the garden. Rake up all the leaves and compost them, if you haven't got a leafmould bin put them in a black bag and fork some holes into it and put somewhere that it won't blow about or put a brick on top of it.

Make sure all trees are secure in the ground and have no rubbing branches as these will need to be removed.

A small amount of lime around Carnations, Pinks and other lime‐loving plants will improve them and make them perform better.

Prune established fruit trees and other deciduous trees, it is better to do this early in the winter when the days can be better, although it can be done anytime between leaf fall and buds bursting. Aim for an open wine glass shape to allow air to circulate and fruit to form where there is maximum light.

Many perennials can be cut down to ground level, although any with attractive seed heads can be left as long as they don't become too messy and straggly. Also seed heads can attract birds into the garden to eat insects and grubs from other plants.

Remove the growing tip from Sweet Peas sown in October, when 2‐3 leaf pairs have formed, this will encourage side shoots to develop.

Lilies can be planted when soil conditions allow, don't plant in soggy soil as this will rot the bulb, or plant in pots with a reasonable compost.

Outside containers should be insulated before it gets really cold, by wrapping in fleece and standing on feet to allow air to circulate. So this before it becomes too frosty and wet or it will seal in the damp and rot the plants.

If you are intending to make wreaths or table decorations, make sure the birds don't eat all the berries by covering a small area with fleece or sacking to save for later, also this can apply to Christmas Roses which can be covered with a bell cloche to save them.

To keep as much moisture in the ground and beds weed free, add as much compost as you have and rake over.

Hardwood cuttings can be taken as you trim branches and these can be dug into the soil and left to germinate, ready for potting on when the weather improves.

When Wisterias have filled there allotted space cut growth back 2‐3 inches from the older wood.

Improve the drainage of your lawn by spiking with a garden fork and brushing lawn sand into the holes.

Repair and treat fencing and trellis whilst the plants are dormant.

Clean the greenhouse and potting shed, clean all tools including mowers ready for next season. Wash plant pots and trays ready for re‐use and on clearer days ventilate the greenhouse and potting shed as this eliminates the risk of algae, moss and mould.

Plan now for an early start to the cropping year, cover the area you intend to use for crops with plastic sheeting of large cloches to warm the soil in anticipation of a good spring to plant out your crops.

Divide Rhubarb by removing any rotting matter and spread rich compost around the crown. Rhubarb can also be forced for an early crop by covering the dormant crown with a forcing jar or an old bucket as this exclude all light and keeps the plant warmer. Stems will grow tall and straight in search of any light. These stems are a lot lighter and sweeter.

Set up early potatoes to sprout or 'chit' ready for planting.

Rose Cottage team rise to the challenge Rose Cottage Doggy Day Care & Boarding were badly hit by the floods from Storm Babet last October. Sadly large amounts of their land and fields of freedom were damaged and the team still have repair work ahead of them. Unbelievably, they worked together relentlessly to get Rose Cottage up and running again by the following Monday.

I spoke to Sharon who told me: “We wanted to be open as quickly as possible ‐ not only because it’s our livelihood but because so many people in Chesterfield rely on us to care for and look after their doggy while they go out to work. There was no way we were going let them down.

“We do want to stress that all the doggy areas of our land that are functional were thoroughly deep cleaned and are safe for all our furry friends. We are back bigger and better with lots more to come here at Rose Cottage.

Let’s cook

Perfect Brine & Chris’ Cranberry Sauce

Brine 500g salt • 250g sugar • 1 bulb of garlic (cloves crushed) Add rosemary, thyme, bay leaves, coriander seeds, star anise, pepper‐ corns and an orange if you want to make it a little more Christmassy

Brine turkey for 24 hours ‐ (see opposite)

Cranberry Sauce • 500g defrosted frozen cranberries • 200g light brown sugar • 200ml orange juice • 100ml cider vinegar • 100ml ruby port • Zest of 1 orange • 1 cinnamon stick • Pinch of Maldon salt Take a pan, add the cider, sugar and salt & bring to the boil, ensuring the sugar and salt dissolve, add the orange juice, and reduce by a third.

Add the cranberries, port, orange zest and cinnamon. Bring back to the boil and place a lid over the top, slightly ajar to allow steam to escape and turn down to a simmer. Simmer for about 1 hour occasionally stirring until it starts to become jammy.

Allow to cool and check the seasoning.

Here we are, in our busiest period for hospitality! December has arrived, our function room is busy with Christmas gatherings and work parties. The cosy pub lounge is complete with our crackling fire and festive decorations and Christmas day is fast approaching. I’m taking a few minutes out from the madness to share a few top tips to help your Christmas day turkey be the best ever.

If you are a fan of the whole turkey and fight for the brown meat in your family then brining works perfectly well for this.

For a whole turkey make sure you push your hand under the skin with butter and chopped thyme, and here comes a top tip …. Cook it upside down for 90% of the cooking time wrapped with the shiny side of the foil on the bird. The breast then sits in all the juices ‐ simple but effective. Then take off the foil, turn it over and baste the skin generously every 15 minutes until the skin goes golden brown.

Most importantly check the temperature in the turkey itself; seriously buy a thermometer probe if you haven’t already got one, it really is one of the most useful gadgets you can have in a kitchen. Once the turkey is at 75° in the centre by the bone, it’s cooked. Wrap it up and let it rest, this is super important!

Remember, to carve hot meat is impossible, it should be served warm not hot.

All the juices that come out of the bird whilst resting can be put into your gravy! To carve, think of the turkey as a box and carve down, not at an angle. No Christmas turkey is complete without a great Cranberry sauce, I’ve given you my recipe here too.

We remember them

On Remembrance Sunday you can always guarantee that many of our local residents will turn out to pay their respects. This year the poppy displays were more amazing than usual, due to an extra display which was added to the cenotaph in Eastwood Park.

An extra knitted garland of poppies was added to the usual fabulous array of red that graced the war memorial. The addition was in memory of well loved local man Tony Brooks, who sadly died in August.

Tony had been a huge part of arranging the poppy display in Hasland for many years and had encouraged local knitters to create the knitted poppy display that we have all seen in previous years.

Chesterfield Football Club badges had been added to the poppies in the display in honour of Tony’s love of the club. A fitting tribute for a popular man. The badges will also serve to remember players that were also lost in the war as years go by.

Mining heritage of Clay Cross set to be uncovered A £79,650 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund is set to explore the rich mining heritage of the Clay Cross area on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the Miners' Strike.

Parkhouse Colliery Workers from The industry has a the beginning of the last century. history in the area stretching back to Victorian times and was the site of the Parkhouse Colliery mining disaster of 1882, which resulted in the death of 45 men and boys following a gas explosion. Prior to the tragedy, despite the terrible conditions endured by employees, the colliery was considered one of the safest in the area.

In addition to being a pivotal area during the 1984 strike, Clay Cross played a central role in previous strikes in 1926 and 1912. The grant has been awarded to the Hub, Clay Cross, who will run the project that will research and retell the story of the area's mining community. Much of the project will centre around interviews with former workers. It will also record the memories of the last generation to work in the local mines who were part of the 1984 strike.

The two‐and‐a‐half‐year project will explore the lives and heritage of former miners, with their recordings turned into podcasts. An exhibition and book from the research will also be produced.

Thanks to National Lottery players, the project aims to deliver a number of activities linked to the local community. Commenting on the award, Karen Tait, Managing Director of the Hub, said: "We're delighted that we've received this support thanks to National Lottery players. It's great to know that we are a step closer to conserving stories and information for future generations."

We have worked in floods, snow and high winds in the past, but this was a very tricky time. We had two funerals on the day of the worst flooding and we managed to complete them and take care of the families well.

One of the shirts was framed for the kit presentation and we have now gifted it to Hasland Club to be put on the wall for everyone to see.

Tony will be sadly missed by many.

The Rosadocs at Sheffield City Hall Ballroom Review and photographs by Scott Antcliffe On Friday 3rd November, 850 revellers packed into the Sheffield City Hall Ballroom to support the superb Rosadocs, a band continuing their meteoric rise‐ not just on the Sheffield music scene, but throughout the UK. Frontman Keelan Graney hails from Tupton and lives just down the road near Holmewood.

Support for the show came in the form of two great Yorkshire bands, Sheffield’s Matilda Shakes and Leeds quartet The Slates.

Both bands commanded the stage with their energetic and frenetic sets. Matilda Shakes’ song Adrenaline, filled with Sheffield references, went down well with the hometown crowd, whilst The Slates, What Have You Done? proved to be popular.

“We’re The Rosadocs Army,” was the chant being vociferously echoed around the stunning Ballroom as the five‐piece entered the stage, arms aloft, waving to the bumper crowd. The band opened up with Towards the Sun, which was swiftly followed up with Oak Tree and recent hit At Your Door.

Frontman Graney thanked the crowd for coming and recalled a heartfelt history of the band playing at the smaller Sheffield venues when starting out in 2017, to now playing at the iconic Ballroom, “A dream come true.”

The band then gave an airing to a new song, Hopeless Optimist’ which was extremely well received by the appreciative crowd. The band then dipped into their back catalogue with an older hit from 2017‐ House of Commoners.

Time and Place and a brilliant acoustic version of Cross to Bear soon followed, before Graney took a few moments to reflect on the recent tragic accident at the Sheffield Steelers game last month resulting in a player losing his life to a freak collision. “We would like to dedicate this song to Adam Johnson, his family and friends and all those fans affected on the night‐ no one should go to work to do a job they love and not come home.” The band dedicated Where You’re Supposed to Be‐ a raw, emotional rendition of the band’s iconic ballad‐ a really poignant, special moment.

The band then performed These People and 2021 hit Settle Down‐ a great opportunity for Graney to demonstrate his powerful voice and great range.

The indie five‐piece then performed a new song Too Much In Time‐ due for release later this year/early 2024. I’d go as far to say that it’s my favourite song from any band in the last five years‐ A real ballad that would suit a stadium crowd with infectious riffs, melancholic piano playing and powerful vocals.

The band left the stage for a brief moment and then 14‐year‐old guitarist Poppy Fletcher entered the stage with the band for the encore. The talented teen performed guitar in Run Away Instead whilst Graney made his way through the crowd‐ adding to the already electric atmosphere with his now customary trademark of performing the song with pandemonium around him.

The band finished with the classic hits No.54 and Concrete‐ two surefire songs to get the crowd bouncing. A great night and a suitably bigger stage for a band who continue to impress with each and every gig and I’m sure it won’t be long before even bigger stages beckon them.

Local Theatre Review ‐ Hasland Theatre Company Sheila’s Island by Tim Firth.

Hasland Playhouse Theatre ‐ 13‐18th November I was very much looking forward to seeing this comedy, written by Tim Firth. Some fantastic actors from Hasland Theatre Company were involved and I had read that Steve Cowley and Nicky Beards were co‐directing, so it was definitely going to be a treat.

The set was amazing. A huge woodland glen complete with what seemed to be a real full sized tree, a leafy flooring and a hidden lake at the back. Our four actors emerged from the lake dripping wet as the play began ‐ a team of intrepid middle aged middle management women forced into an outward bound weekend adventure.

Olivia Brooks’ character, group captain Sheila, was convinced she had solved the tricky ‘cryptic’ clues which formed the first part of the weekend puzzle. Her confidence soon dissolved as it became clear that they have sunk their rowing boat one mile in the wrong direction on the lake and should in fact have been relaxing in the pub a mile away on the other side.

Dreamy and distant Fay, played by Leila Hunt, is sent to look out for passing boats but instead returns jubilant with her sighting of a rare bird of prey, convinced the animal is a sign from her lost ‘Lucy’. We are given hints that Fay is a little ‘doolally’ but we don’t discover her true, sad story until close to the end of the play when she begins to unravel.

Louise Sutton was fabulous as witty Denise, the lady who just ‘doesn’t do these things’. Denise hides her own disappointing life by ridiculing the others and planting seeds of doubt in them about their lives.

Louise managed to portray a character that we could laugh with, pity and dislike at the same time.

Heather Davies provided many of the comedy moments as Julie, the younger and most ambitious of the management team.

Heather’s delivery of her most comedic lines had the audience howling and softened even the darkest moments of the play. The group descend into chaos over Julie’s secret sausage left over from breakfast, which is promptly flipped into the lake during grace. Towards the interval the foursome have decided to keep warm under Julie’s expensive camouflage thermal blanket ‐ just as a party ferry on the lake passes them by!

The much darker second half of the play gave each actor a chance to show a more melancholy and vulnerable side of their character, which they all did brilliantly.

The atmosphere of the whole play was amazing. We shared the smell of the lonely sausage, the fizz of the sparklers used to try to catch the attention of the passing boat, the mist that was hovering around the woodland and the fireworks from the nearby display on the mainland ‐ this was a very immersive set. Fay’s quieter moments took place as she prayed in the branches of the tree on the side of the stage. The lighting team did a fantastic job of visualising her loneliness during these scenes.

The audience were in stitches at the comedy and engrossed in the tense and sad moments as we wondered how the story would end. A great evening’s entertainment and the whole team should be feeling pretty proud of themselves.

Find your space at Finding a place to feel comfortable to work out is no easy feat. Luckily the team at Crossfit 252 thrive on a challenge and have a mission to make anyone feel welcome and able to reach their goal.

I went along to try a Friday HIIT class with the group and found a bunch of lovely friendly folks all working out together in a very relaxed but determined atmosphere.

Members of all ages and fitness levels were pitching in together, spurring each other on and working hard to complete the challenges ‐ all scaled to their individual fitness levels.

Owners, couple Paul and Sarah Roberts have a fascinating history together, having met when they both served in the Army. The business name comes from the date of their wedding anniversary. Having left the forces they needed a new challenge and wanted to inspire others, so opened Crossfit 252 in 2014.

Each year Crossfit 252 host a ‘Halloween Throw Down’. Small teams from the club take part in 3 workouts throughout a day. This is a great opportunity for everyone to challenge themselves to be the best that they can be. Each team has a member from a different level of fitness and they spur each other on in timed bouts, whilst many other members come along to cheer them on. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the 2023 event. The support in the room was fantastic with music adding a beat and a happy positive vibe.

There are around 150 members at Crossfit but the space is huge and there are ample class sessions so there’s room for everyone. Go off the beaten track in 2024

When you think of booking a holiday, do you automatically think of looking for blue seas and golden sands? Most people do. But in 2023, the popularity of adventure and touring holidays is on the rise and something to consider when choosing your next getaway.

We are hearing that more people are swapping takeaways and nights out for pocketing their pennies and putting it towards Bucket List trips where travel is a priority. The great thing about touring is that there is something for everyone, with budget trips being available as well as high end tours featuring 5* hotels. You could choose a group trip where you will travel with other people or your can choose to take a private tour where you can handpick the activities you want to do and the places you want to see.

Solo travellers particularly enjoy group adventures as they can meet like minded people in a similar situation without feeling singled out. With many companies now offering ‘Solo Only’ trips, this is the perfect way for the solo travellers out there to explore the world in safety and with the comfort of knowing they are not alone.

Family touring is another area which is growing in popularity. Many parents are looking to give their children a culturally rich experience and again, having the peace of mind that you are

with a guide is priceless. You will find some family tours allow children as young as 5 to join, where others start at around 13 years with more activities suited to keep teens happy and occupied. When going into teen years in particular, and ‘Free Child Spaces’ on your traditional beach holidays slowly fade away, adventure holidays are certainly worth looking at from a price point of view.

You may think that touring and adventure holidays are for those that have high fitness levels, and whilst some trips do require a certain level of fitness (Hello Everest Base Camp trips!), there are plenty of options which are considered low level intensity and suitable to those not wanting dare devilish activities but immerse you in local markets and homesteads.

The best thing is, these types of trips are available all over the world. You don’t have to travel very far to experience adventure as there are trips right here in the UK available. Or if you do want to explore the more remote corners of the earth, polar expeditions and gorilla treks may be more up your street.

So when you’re thinking of your next getaway, it might just be worth exploring something a little different to what you’re use to. You might surprise yourself with what you find.

Everything for the perfect Christmas in Chesterfield Chesterfield is set to provide a magical festive period for families, with a programme of packed events and activities. Chesterfield Borough Council and Destination Chesterfield have once again partnered to launch the annual Christmas in Chesterfield campaign, promoting the exciting festive fun, delightful dining, and unique gifts which can be found in the local area.

Santa’s Grotto at the Assembly Rooms, Market Hall until Sunday 24 December.

Families are invited to visit Santa in his Chesterfield Grotto and share their Christmas wishes. Each child will be given a wrapped gift. Tickets are on sale now and are priced at £7.50 per child. There will also be six relaxed sessions for children with learning disabilities or sensory and communication disorders.

Revolution House open Thursday 7 to Wednesday 24 December – from 11am to 3pm (Thursday to Sunday).

There will be a Christmas exhibition titled ‘The 12 Days of Christmas’ which uses whimsical objects from the museum collection to illustrate the famous Christmas song. You can also see Revolution House decorated for a 17th Century Christmas.

A Carol Concert will take place outside Revolution House on Thursday 7 December at 6.30pm where you will be able to see the Holymoorside Brass Band in the garden for traditional, festive carol singing.

Chesterfield Canal ‐ Santa cruises The John Varley ll will be sailing from Tapton Lock (S41 7JB) and the Madeline from Hollingwood Hub (S43 2PF). Here you can take to the water this Christmas to meet Santa on Chesterfield Canal. There will be two different boats in operation.

Santa Fun Run at Queen’s Park Sunday 24 December at 10am (1.5km) and 10:30am (5km) The Chesterfield Santa Fun Run features participants dressed in Santa suits running around the park, with a 1500m race and another one of 5k. Community Christmas Market shopping & fun A great time was had by all at the Hasland Magazine Christmas Market in mid November.

This year the market was spread between two venues, Hasland Methodist Church and Hasland Club. This created extra space for stallholders and a larger festive cafe area.

We were very excited that so many people came along to join in the fun. It’s always a gamble to extend an event but it certainly paid off for all this year. Those who were in the mood could easily step straight into the club after shopping for a festive tipple!

Hasland Community Choir once again paid us a visit to sing Christmas carols. They really did add festive magic to the event. Mayor of Chesterfield Mick Brady came along to welcome all to the event and introduce the choir. After the singing the choir were invited to visit our festive cafe for a complimentary cuppa.

Local charities and community groups were able to fundraise or raise awareness of their group free of charge, including Salvation Army, Crafty Chit Chat, Grassmoor Guides, Hasland Brownies, an Ashgate Hospice fundraising stall by Sandria Mather, Men in Sheds, Friends of Spital Cemetery, Friends of Eastwood Park and Grassland Hasmoor Big Local.

Thanks so much to the stallholders who came along and thanks also to our hosts at Hasland Methodist Church for helping us. The team at Hasland Club were also hugely accommodating, giving us the space for the market free of charge and helping with the set up and decorating.

An extra thanks to my friends and family for their help with the running of the event. We hope to repeat the event in the same way next year.

A total of £400 was raised to be given to local community groups. So far these include Hasland Infant School PTFA, The African Caribbean Association of Chesterfield, Hasland Community Choir and Community Theatre at Hasland Club.

Transforming Futures in Chesterfield Young people in Chesterfield are being invited to take part in a new programme designed to develop their entrepreneurial skills and confidence to help them kickstart their career.

After successfully receiving £6,000 in funding through Chesterfield Borough Council’s Community Grants Fund, Young Enterprise ‐ the national financial and enterprise education charity – is teaming up with Springwell Community College and Netherthorpe School, inviting pupils to take part in its Company Programme. The Programme aims to empower young people aged between 13 and 19 to set up and run a student company under the guidance of a volunteer from a local business. Participants gain practical business experience and key skills.

Volunteers from local businesses are also being urged to get involved as mentors and provide the students with practical advice and guidance.

The community grants are just one initiative which is benefiting from funding through the UKSPF, after the council was successful in securing £2.6m from the Government. It will fund initiatives up to April 2025, which are designed to improve life for local people and support local businesses.

The Derwent Dams

Lying about 20 miles to the north west of Chesterfield, the Derwent Dams ‐ consisting of Ladybower, Howden and Derwent Reservoir are a popular spot for walkers and cyclists alike in the heart of the Dark Peak.

Derwent Reservoir’s glassy expanse of water which beautifully reflects the dreamy clouds and densely wooded slopes, holds a story that’s gone down in the annals of wartime flying folklore. Because it’s here, just 60 feet above Derwent’s imposing gritstone dam wall flanked by its iconic Gothic towers, that the men affectionately known as ‘The Dambusters’ perfected their hair‐raising skills.

With the rainy downpours that we have had recently the ‘plugholes’ were in full‐flow‐ a sight and sound to behold with the roaring torrent falling ferociously into the abyss‐ truly mesmerising.

The ‘plugholes’ or Bellmouth spillways as they are officially known, measure 24 metres in diameter and drop 20 metres.

The Upper Derwent Visitor Centre (S33 0AQ) is a great starting point to explore from.it has a pay and display car park, refreshment kiosk and toilets. If you are a frugal Yorkshireman like me, you may be lucky and find some free off‐street parking just down from the Yorkshire Bridge Inn ( dog friendly and does cracking food).

For those wanting to stretch their legs in order to burn off the carvery calories, there’s a great 5‐mile circular walk around Ladybower Reservoir.

Although it’s flat for the most part and good terrain, I’d allow about 2.5 hours to complete it.

This lovely Ladybower Reservoir walk, is a gentle walk is on well‐made paths and offers the most stunning views for only a small amount of effort. The circular route completes a circuit of one half of Ladybower 44

Reservoir and passes the awe‐inspiring Derwent Dam. The accessibility of the route makes it suitable for family‐friendly cycling and users of all‐terrain wheelchairs or pushchairs, as well as hikers and dog walkers.

Along the walk you’ll be able to spot nearby Peak District favourites, Win Hill, Crook Hill and Derwent Edge. All three of these are lovely walks with great views, but much more strenuous‐ especially Win Hill‐ standing at a lofty 463 metres. After about 2‐ miles, you will be faced with the equally imposing Derwent Dam. The building of the dam was started in 1902 and it stands at an impressive 35m high. Derwent Dam, and the similar Howden Dam at the top of Derwent Reservoir, are well known for being the site of the practice bombing missions for the aforementioned 617 Squadron before their attack on the Ruhr dams in Germany in 1943. The 1954 film ‘The Dambusters’ was filmed here and the reservoirs see regular flypasts from the Lancaster and Spitfire bombers of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Regardless of the time of year that you visit, these gems in the Dark Peak are well worth a visit. A lovely, accessible walk with iconic, picturesque views. What’s not to like?

Derbyshire Born and Bred We were sent this lovely poem by local poet Alva de Chiro. Alva meets with a writers group each month and they each set tasks for the group.

Alva was given the challenge of writing a poem inspired by a Wordsworth classic ‐ ‘Upon Westminster Bridge’.

Alva told me “I’m very happy to share my poem.

I was brought up on Eyre Street in Hasland and went to Hasland School. My maiden name was Hewitt, in case anyone remembers me! I love writing and telling stories to groups. I’ve done a lot of fundraising for Ashgate Hospice using my talks to entertain local groups.”

Mayor lights up Christmas at Hasland Club The beautiful Christmas tree outside Hasland Club will shine brightly again this year.

Mayor Mick Brady was happy to officially switch on the lights during a visit to Hasland Christmas Market. The tree will twinkle throughout the festive season for all to enjoy.

The tree was provided by the Friends of Hasland Community Hub, who held a raffle at last years Panto at the Club to raise funds. They hope to do the same this year.

Stories from Spital Cemetery

The Poaching Vicar and his son Historical article contributed by Andy Miles ‐ Friends of Spital Cemetery.

On 17th April 1924 Mr Richard Tesdale Dewe died and was buried in Spital Cemetery. His obituary in the Derbyshire Times mentioned that he was the son of the Reverend Samuel Francis Dewe, the “Sporting Parson of Kent”.

The Reverend Samuel Dewe was born in Appleby Magna in 1795. He was educated at St. John’s College Cambridge and became a Deacon in 1818, and was a Stipendury Curate in Throcking, Hertfordshire. Having qualified as a Priest in 1820 he became a schoolmaster at Devonport Classical and Mathematical School and in 1823 he became Headmaster.

In 1824 he married Frances Mary Cork in Layston, Hertfordhsire. He then became a Curate at Halling, Rochester, Kent. He went to be made Rector of Kingsdown in Kent in 1832 and a Minor Canon at Rochester Cathedral, Vicar of Chart Sutton in 1833, Curate at Strood in 1833, and Vicar of Allhallows in 1835, all of these places being associated with Rochester Cathedral.

In June 1864 a court case was reported that a gamekeeper, Enos Reed, in the employ of Messrs Clarke and Lewis, (gentlemen who rented shooting at Kingsdown) was charged with assaulting Thomas Shackle and Thomas Barker, pupils of the Reverend Samuel Dewe, Rector of Kingsdown, at his private academy. The boys had counter‐sued Mr Reed.

It appeared from the evidence that Mr Dewe’s pupils were in the habit of playing cricket in a field called ‘Forty Acres’ in the occupation of Messrs.

Clarke and Lewis and they constantly trespassed on lands which Reed had been desired by his masters to look after, and warn people off.

On the day in question, 28th May 1864, the complainants, accompanied by others, had been trespassing. Reed remonstrated with them, but they all laughed at him and insulted him. Reed struck one of them on the face. The complainants then got their cricket stumps and bat and knocked the keeper about, so much so as to dislocate his left arm and shoulder. Several witnesses were examined, but the magistrates dismissed both cases.

In the newspapers of September 1864 it was reported that at the East Dartford petty sessional sitting the Rev. Samuel Dewe was charged with being “in search of game without a licence on land in the occupation of a farmer named Enoch Reed” on Sunday 24th September 1864.

A barrister, Mr Francis, appeared for the plaintive. He stated that the defendant, in addition to holding the rectory of Kingsdown, took some pupils to educate. A gentlemen named Lewis took the shooting over the farm of Mr Reed, which adjoined the glebe land, and had been subject to continual annoyance from the young gentlemen, and also from the rev. defendant himself. That would explain in some measure why Mr Lewis felt himself bound to institute the present proceedings.

On the evening in question two watchers, named Matthews and Pigott, were out on the ground at about eight o’clock, when they saw the defendant crossing a twelve‐acre field with two or three of his sons and two strangers.

They had no right in the field, as there was no footpath there, and they had got two sporting dogs with them, which were running about the field. The watchers saw one of the dogs spring a covey of birds. When the defendant came up to the watchers they remonstrated with him, and while they were doing so one of the dogs came up to them with a partridge in its mouth, the bird being still alive.

There was no pretence for saying that there was a footpath at this spot, but even had the defendant been on the highway there was still the charge of using the dogs in pursuit of game. At the same time the case could be settled at once if the rev. defendant would express his regret, and give his assurance that nothing of the kind should again occur.

The defendant refusing to do this, evidence was called in support of Mr Francis’s statement. The defendant, who conducted his own case, said the charge that he had been troublesome to Mr Lewis was quite unfounded. On the occasion in question he had lost the footpath. The dogs were in subjection, but while he was talking with the watchers they broke away, and brought up a partridge that had its leg broken.

As to his going out on a Sunday to take game, it was libel, and if such were the case he could never go back to Kingsdown, as it would be said that if he went out poaching on a Sunday he would go out on other days. He would do everything he could to prevent annoyance to Mr Lewis, but as to expressing his regret in the way suggested by Mr Francis, he never would do so.

Defendant then called Rev. T Hooper, another clergyman, to show that the footpath formerly near this place had been stopped up; and the magistrates being satisfied had not gone up into the field with the intention of pursuing game, dismissed the case, though they expressed their opinion that it was injudicious to go into the field with dogs!

The sporting parson of Kent died at the age of 89 having been Rector of Kingsdown for nearly 50 years. He also rode to hounds with the Bexhill Harriers. He was hunting with Lord and Lady Cantelupe when Lady Cantelupe’s horse pulled up dead lame, and she was obliged to retire from “the gay throng that goes laughing along.” Yes indeed, the unspeakable in pursuit of the inedible was regarded as a “gay throng.”

Not so today, but it is not a surprise that the Sporting Parson of Kent’s son Richard also took up hunting. Richard Tesdale Dewe was a Brewery Manager who followed the Barlow Hunt. He did not give up fox hunting until he was 70 years old. His great willpower and constitution lasted him to the end and got him out of many serious falls during his younger days when he not only rode to hounds but rode in many point to point events.

His most remarkable accident was when hunting with the Rufford, and his iron constitution can be imagined when it is stated that after re‐mounting he rode to Chesterfield, and then on to Sheffield, where his horse, shying at a train, threw him heavily on to the metals, inflicting a severe injury to his head. He was removed in an unconscious condition to hospital, and there it was found that the second accident had probably saved his life by removing the pressure on the brain caused by the first! It was stated at the time that Mr Dewe must have been in a state of coma throughout his long ride to Sheffield!

Mr Dewe came to Chesterfield from Leeds where he had been second brewer to Messrs Tetley’s Brewery, to take up an appointment as brewer to the Brampton Brewery Co. with Mr Chater. In 1881 he was appointed Brewer and Manager of the Chesterfield Brewery. He held the post until 1915 when, on his retirement, the tenants decided to make him a presentation of a settee, the presentation being made at the Blue Bell Inn. The Friends of Spital Cemetery provide guided tours of the cemetery. The December tour will be at 1pm on Sunday 10th, and the January tour at 1pm on Sunday 14th. Meet at the bottom gate.

The Chairman’s thoughts

Hi everyone ‐ The last time I wrote this blog was after 9 games and we sat very proudly at the top of the National League.

We have continued that progress and at the time of writing we have played 20 games and amassed a fantastic 50 points. We are currently top of the league with Barnet 8 points behind ‐ a brilliant position to be in at this stage of the season.

There will however, be no complacency on the boards part or from Paul Cook and his team. We know how difficult and unforgiving this league is and that we need to keep performing each game to ensure we achieve our goal by April next year.

We have been on a magnificent run of 14 wins out of the last 15 games in all competitions but that came to an end last Saturday at Southend with a 2‐1 defeat. It was particularly disappointing having taken a 1‐0 lead in the first half. It goes to show that nothing can be taken for granted in this league. By the way, I think Southend will be in the play off mix come April. We managed to put things right at our last game though with a very professional win 2‐0 at Woking. Not a memorable performance but the result is everything.

The marketing team goes from strength to strength with new sponsors We are once again performing well in the FA Cup and are looking joining us every week. I am particularly grateful for all the support we forward to our second round home tie with Leyton Orient on the 2nd have had for the new training ground and the funds raised will enable December. This follows a fantastic performance that saw us outclass the us to maintain the facility in top condition. Phil and Ashley Kirk continue highest ranked team in the competition, Portsmouth at this stage. It was to provide fantastic support and have invested further funds in the club a brilliant afternoon in front of the ITV cameras with a nearly sell out through purchase of more shares. Their commitment to the club is and crowd. will continue to be fundamental to our success.

Once again I would like to say a massive thank you to all our supporters Finally I would like to pay tribute to everyone for the Armed Forces Day for their commitment to the club. Our home attendances are Remembrance game. It was organised superbly and recognised very unbelieveable and our away support never ceases to amaze me. I was at respectfully by all in attendance.
