really embraced the occasion. See the photo spread further in....

What a rollercoaster for fans of Chesterfield Football Club. After a fantastic season they came so close to promotion at what sounds like a very well fought play off match. Best of luck to the team for next year.

If you’re enjoying the intermittent sunny weather why not take a walk around Renishaw Hall. our fantastic photographer contributor Scott Antcliffe has sent in a report and some amazing photos from his recent visit ‐ it looks beautiful.

The Tractorfest event which took place in May was a massive success, raising an unbelievable £17000 for Ashgate Hospice. Well done to Drew Lilleker and all of the organisers and sponsors of this community day, which was very well attended and lots of fun. Take a look at the photographs in this issue. I’m looking forward to Tractorfest 2024!

Hasland Theatre Company have announced their programme of events for the next season. Find out more in our theatre section as well as reading a review of the brilliant trio of plays

‘Under the Blue Sky’ performed in May. If you haven’t been before I’d highly recommend you book yourself a show or two. It’s very important to support our local arts and its’ a great night. In other arts news, Spital Arts are hosting their Spital Arts Spectacular in June. There will be many artists exhibiting, including our cover artist this month, Ukrainian Digital Artist Daria Bulavina and her sister Olha. Thanks so much to Daria for allowing me to use her striking Crooked Spire artwork for our cover this issue. It’s totally out of the ordinary and a great cover for us. I look forward to interviewing Daria about more of her artwork for our next issue. I love meeting our community groups. This issue we have interesting reports from Calow Woodturning Group and Chesterfield Male Voice Choir. You can also read about the Asian Association

Time to Sparkle!

Over 2,500 people will be sparkling through Hasland for Ashgate Hospice’s Sparkle Night Walk on Saturday 1st July. The event is sponsored by Technique and brings the community together to remember loved ones and raises money for our local hospice to be there for patients and families throughout North Derbyshire.

The 10K walk starts at 10pm from Chesterfield Football Club’s Technique Stadium. The party starts from 7.30pm with live entertainment on the main stage and entertainment continues throughout the route making it the most fantastic and vibrant atmosphere.

Hasland’s Eastwood Park is the Halfway Point, sponsored by Harold Lilleker & Sons Funeral Directors. A full list of the road closures can be found on the Hospice’s website so you can plan for your journeys that evening.

Ashgate Hospice rely on the generosity of our community to raise millions of pounds each year to help fund specialist care. By taking part in this fantastic event, you’ll help Ashgate Hospice continue to be there for families when it matters most.

Georgia is taking part in memory of her mum, Christine, who would have been 70 on the 2nd July.

Georgia shared “At midnight as we near the finish line on the Sparkle Night Walk we will celebrate mum’s birthday and remember her.” Christine sadly died in the Hospice in August last year after being diagnosed with terminal cancer in June. “Because of the incredible team at Ashgate, mum received the loving, compassionate and respectful care that everyone should have access to at the end of their life. Ashgate also made it possible for me (and Dudley the Cockerpoo) to stay with mum and sleep by her side, right to the end.

It is impossible to put into words just what a special place Ashgate Hospice is and it is no exaggeration to say that I am surviving the very worst of times, because of their kindness and ongoing support.”

Sign up today for £15 and receive a brilliant fundraising pack, with lots of tips to help you beat your fundraising target. You’ll also receive a pink Sparkle T‐shirt and flashing bunny ears to wear on the night.

Want to promote your business on the night? Your logo can appear on the screens at five locations throughout the route for £100.

Please come out on the night and cheer the walkers from your doorsteps as they do something truly amazing for their local Hospice. Want to take on an official marshal role? Register as a volunteer. Go to ashgatehospice.org.uk/sparkle‐night‐walk or call the Events Team on 01246 567250.

What’s On

Spital Arts host a regular programme of concerts and events. All events are held at St. Leonards Church, Spital. Here is their latest news and diary of upcoming events.

Poke O’Swedgers take us to the seaside

Our last event brought us the musical duo Poke O’Swedgers which is a Scots dialect phrase for a bag of sweets. In this case, the bag contained singer Kev and guitarist Dave. Their songs dealt with aspects of Glasgow nightlife, the philanderings of Lord Byron, the care of domestic plants, wandering the Cuckoo Way and the odd smattering of the Proclaimers walking 500 miles. The gig was acoustic, informal and intimate with many original songs.

Professor Bellissimo and his hand‐crafted contemporary Judy and Punch show, took us back to the seaside with a hilarious performance just before the interval. This had the audience in fits of laughter, and ready for their cakes at the intermission!

Spital Arts Spectacular

We also have the marvellous Daria Bulavina and her sister Olha displaying their amazing digital artwork so come along and see what they have produced.

Fun charity dog show and family day

The Together for Dogs

Charity Dog Show will once again be held at Old Manor Barn, Temple Normanton on Sunday 16th July.

This chosen charities this year include Zoe’s Journey canine cancer research charity ‐ a cause close to the heart of organiser Nicky Hunt.

Nicky, owner of Goon & Co Dog Training, has an adorable family of Hungarian Vizslas and is something of a breed specialist. Sadly she lost her dog Freddy to cancer. Another of her furry friends, Frankie has been battling cancer and has lost a leg to the illness ‐ not that this is holding him back! Sadly, lovely Vizsla Meg also battled the disease. Nicky really wants to help to support the charity that is working hard to help dogs and their owners to beat this terrible disease. Anyone is welcome to come along to enjoy the day, include their dog or simply watch and enjoy a great day out!

For more information contact Nicky on 07838 080556.

Plastic Free Festival returns for 3rd year

Back for its third year, the Plastic Free Festival returns to Chesterfield for a day of ethically conscious shopping, creative craft workshops, children's entertainment, tasty food and drink and live performances. A fantastic family‐fun day out with the sole purpose of helping you to reduce your single‐use plastics and live a plastic free lifestyle.

At the festival you will find stunning products from local, independent businesses, all without any plastic!

There will be live music throughout the day from local musicians such as Ada Blue, Mr Bunny, Dukeries Ukeries, and headliner, North Ridge.

You can enjoy delicious food and drink at the festival from a number of caterers, including Mexican Mare, Feast from the East, Veggies Catering Campaign and others. In keeping with the ethos of the festival it is recommended that you bring your own reusable bags, cups, containers and cutlery.

Finally, you will no doubt enjoy the many craft workshops taking place, including make a willow tension tray, a nature based natural material craft activity, and a repair station, where you'll learn how to darn clothes, patch holes, and replace buttons!

The festival this year is kindly sponsored by Sheffield reusable container business, Loadhog, who have kindly purchased a quantity of reusable pint cups for the festival which you can hire to use at a pop‐up bar.

The first festival took place on Sunday 8th August 2021 and was a success. If you would like to volunteer on the day, become a sponsor, or find out more about who is appearing at the festival, visit theplasticfreefestival.co.uk.

The Plastic Free Festival takes place on Sunday 16th July 2023 between 10am and 4pm at New Square Chesterfield.

UCR DISC ISING OVER

I’m a fan of Reflexology, I find it truly relaxing with some amazing health benefits. But recently I was offered a taster session of Facial Reflexology ‐ a new concept to me!

I went along to visit Lynn Jukes in her peaceful garden studio in Hasland. Once I was settled in the extremely comfortable treatment chair, Lynn asked me a few questions about my health and medication, to help her to tailor my treatment. She explained that she would be using Neal’s Yard Orange Flower Oil (amazing fragrance) on my face whilst she worked her magic. Wow, one hour later what can I say... I was completely zoned out. The treatment released the tension in my whole body and felt wonderful on my face. Lynn brought me back into the room with a gentle tapping technique, then explained where she had given extra attention during my treatment to tailor it to my needs.

Highly recommended for a therapeutic treat. Give Lynn a call to find out how the treatment can help you: 07729 948 344.

Are last minute holiday bargains a thing of the past?

you have any late deals?’… This will be one of the most frequently asked questions in the travel agent world this summer. Messages from people looking for that last minute bargain getaway to escape the British drizzle and get their yearly dose of Vitamin D in another part of the world. Turn back the clock a few years and you’ll remember the £199pp late deals to Majorca and allocated on arrival mystery mega bargains. In 2023 however, late deals look very different and these sort of things live very much in the past. Of course there will always be holidays available to book at the last minute, but is it really worth waiting until a couple of weeks before your desired travel date to book that much needed getaway?

As more people are looking to book further in advance to spread the cost of their well earned holidays, hotels can be booked up for popular peak dates months, sometimes up to a year in advance, which can often leave clients disappointed. If you have a particular hotel in mind, I would highly recommend booking as far in advance as possible to ensure you get exactly what you want. In particular, if you have a larger family and require a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment within a complex, I would urge you not to wait until the last minute. This accommodation type has become very sought after in recent years, sometimes with the demand outweighing availability.

But, we all love a bargain! And whilst last minute getaways may not be as cheap as they once were, there are still some great late prices around…so here’s some top tips to help you find them.

I may be biased but book with a travel agent. We have access to hundreds of operators including ones which are only available to the trade and get daily updates on the latest available offers. Use our knowledge to save you both money and time. Not only can we price match and sometimes beat mainstream companies, we are also on hand to answer questions, help with check in and we can also print off documents if you don’t have a printer. We are here for YOU and offer great value.

Be Flexible! Some hotels will be fully booked, some flights will be fully booked and some room types will be fully booked. Flexibility is key. Be open to various destinations and try looking at flying from different airports. Being in Chesterfield we are very lucky to have a fabulous pick of airports within easy reach. From Manchester to Birmingham, Leeds and even Luton, opening up to more of these will increase your choices massively. If you are a larger family, look at booking 2 separate rooms. Whilst this may not be the ideal situation, it may be an option worth considering to keep costs down.

And don’t rule out cruising. We have had some amazing late cruise bargains available this year and the value for money when choosing to holiday this way is incredible. Family cruising is increasing in popularity as 3rd and 4th passengers can get impressively reduced, (and sometimes free) fares. When compared to land based holidays, you may surprise yourself at just how much more you could get included. If you’re new to cruising and want to explore this option, I’d be happy to answer any questions as I am a huge advocate for everyone to try cruising at least once.

So, if you are still looking for a getaway this summer, be open to new ideas and take a look at what different options are out there. If you have something particular in mind, take a look further into the future and secure your perfect holiday in advance. Most importantly, no matter how long your countdown is, enjoy yourself and make some memories. Call Sam on 01246 953031 or follow her on Facebook if you would like some help to find your dream holiday.

Graham ‘Fuzz’ Fairs and his wonderful message

In the last issue we wrote about the charity Fuzzy Football sessions organised by local Spireite Graham Fairs. We were very sad to learn that Graham sadly passed away on the 28th March. Our condolences go to his loving family and many friends.

Fuzz loved his walking football sessions which gave him a goal each week and time with his friends. Chesterfield Walking Football group organiser Malc Perks told us ”Graham had known for a long time that he had terminal cancer, but he reacted positively and set himself the target of playing walking football for 52 consecutive weeks, and he achieved 53 weeks! He even attended a Dronfield session in the snow when the Hasland session was cancelled because of ice making the tarmac surface too dangerous.

“Our Club, Chesterfield Senior Spireites Walking football FC, pass on our deepest condolences to his family.”

Graham’s son Shaun told us “We will miss Dad terribly. A collection at his funeral has raised £512 for Ashgate Hospice which is great.”

Local resident Malc Perks contacted us to say “I have had the pleasure of knowing Graham ‘Fuzz’ Fairs for almost 60 years, and in all that time we have never had a bad word for each other. Fuzz was always the same, funny, mischievous, but down to earth man who always had time for you.

Chesterfield based coach honoured at Martial Arts Hall of Fame Awards Event

Multi award‐winner Dave Cartawick, who runs Unit1 Fitness & Martial Arts in Chesterfield, was honoured at the recent UK Martial Arts Show & Hall of Fame Awards event.

The event, held at Doncaster Dome, is one of the largest and most eagerly anticipated events in the martial arts calendar, attended by around 500 people from the UK and worldwide.

After being handed a ‘Legend’ award, Dave said: “To be invited to this presentation ceremony is an honour itself. But to be amongst such exalted company and receive the Legend award is quite a humbling experience and something that I will cherish for many years to come.”

Many world‐class fighters and movie stars, as well as coaches, instructors and participants from all disciplines, with a common passion, come together for an evening of celebration and to recognise the achievements from grassroots to elite level.

Dave, a 6th Dan, is also the chief instructor of the British Karate and Kickboxing Association. He has been coaching for around 30 years. As well as teaching over 10,000 students during that time, from grassroots to elite level, he has led competitors to over 70 world and international titles, facing some of the world’s best in places like Las Vegas, Miami, Orlando and Texas.

Dave runs sessions in Chesterfield for kids aged five years and above, as well as adult karate and kickboxing sessions and a Friday night ladies‐only class.

He also works closely with Chesterfield Football Club and Chesterfield College, delivering sessions for the CFC academy teams and groups including Adult Weight Management and Alcohol/Substance Recovery, as well as putting on Conflict Resolution and Self Defence classes.

Dave has been named Derbyshire’s Sports Coach of the Year three times and Chesterfield’s Sports Coach of the Year four times.

“A minutes silence was held for Fuzz before the start of our Thursday Walking Football session at Eastwood Park. We were also proud that many members of the Chesterfield Senior Spireites Walking Football club attended his funeral. He will be sadly missed by all our members, and I’m sure by all of his many ex‐football teammates, close friends and family.”

The Fuzzy Football sessions have so far raised over £850 to be split between Weston Park Hospital and Chesterfield Royal Hospital. Fuzz’s lasting message to others was to enjoy life for as long as you possibly can following a diagnosis ‐ don’t give up and give yourself something to look forward to. He certainly demonstrated that message beautifully. Thanks for sharing your message with us Fuzz.

If you would like to donate to Fuzz’s appeal you can visit the JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/chesterfield‐senior‐spireites. You can also visit www.chesterfieldwalkingfootball.co.uk/news and follow the link from there.

Still time to enter Chesterfield in Bloom

Green‐fingered residents are being encouraged to show off their talents in this year’s Chesterfield In Bloom competitions.

With more than six categories there is the opportunity for everyone to get involved no matter how big or small their outside space is.

Chris Turner, Chair of the Chesterfield in Bloom committee, said: “Last year not only did we win on a regional level, but we also received lots of fantastic entries for our Chesterfield In Bloom competitions from local gardeners. The standard was exceptional and I can’t wait to see the entries for this year.

“We’re excited to see all types of garden from the largest allotments through to container displays. Please do get your entries in as soon as possible and I wish everyone the best of luck in this years competition. People have until Friday 16 June to submit their entries or to nominate their neighbours

After our success last year, the council will also be entering East Midlands In Bloom again and winners of the above competitions may also be included in the judging later this year. Entry forms are available on: www.chesterfield.gov.uk/bloom

Inspire Practice Mental Health Project begins

I am delighted that the Inspire Practice has agreed to work with the Inspire Patient Group (IPG) this year to try and improve the care that can be offered to patients in the area of mental health. The project begins on the 1st of June.

We aim to make the Inspire Practice one of the very best in mental health care. It will require a lot of work in many different areas but we are convinced that the members of our patient group [IPG] can undertake 90% of the work. The Practice have offered their full support and have high hopes of what can be achieved with this partnership approach.

It is well known that NHS mental health care is struggling with increasing demand and very limited resources. For example many young people have to wait a year for support. More are going into crisis situations and more are committing suicide. We want to make more help to be available especially through the voluntary agencies and help patients find this help.

We are extremely fortunate that one of our members Amy Harris has agreed to lead the project. She is a Chesterfield resident and is the Manager of a Chesterfield charity so she has all the contacts we will need in the voluntary sector. Amy has already developed an outline plan that has been enthusiastically accepted by the Practice.

I am genuinely excited by this project and feel it has the potential to make some major and very real changes in mental health care. If you are an Inspire patient and haven’t already joined our 900 IPG email members then send us your email address to ppgroup.ih@gmail.com. We will keep you informed on this project and other developments and you can contribute your thoughts. Let the work begin and let’s see the changes happening!

The plan of action:

• Once the 12 month project launches in June, we will be looking for members within the current Inspire patient group with a particular interest and passion in mental health to form a sub group. This group will meet on a monthly basis and make sure that all the aims we set out for the next year are achieved. We will also be inviting a wider group to be involved in less active roles to make sure that no one is excluded.

• The group will set out a timetable for key things we want to achieve, but a major part of this will be engaging with all patients to ensure everyone has a voice. We don’t want to make any assumptions as to what good mental health care and support looks like, as we know that this will be different for all.

• We already have many ideas of improvements we can make, with a real emphasis on making sure access to mental health support is made as easy as possible. One example of this will be an on site counsellor for Inspire patients, launching in early June. This will provide free and quick access to talking therapy for anxiety and depression.

• A monthly newsletter will be circulated to update all patients on the work being done on this project and we really hope that positive changes will be noticed very quickly.

• We are very lucky to have a surgery willing to make such a strong commitment to mental health and demonstrate how much they value the importance of making that first contact asking for help as good as possible.

• At the end of this 12 month project, we hope to make asking for help easier, provide many resources for self help and support through the voluntary sector and show our patients that mental and physical health are equally important and essential to wellbeing.

Fundraising Fashion Show Success

Blanc & Blanc Occasions have been busy fundraising along with Inner Wheel, Chesterfield and Baslow WI members.

In March they put on a charity fashion show at Chesterfield Golf Club, organised by the Inner Wheel. Collectively they managed to raise a whopping £1575 for the Derbyshire Stroke Centre.

Blanc proprietor Ann‐Marie White told me “I’d like to say thank you to everyone who attended, who helped behind the scenes and of course our lovely models who kindly volunteered.”

Next followed a fashion show at Baslow Village Hall, in collaboration with Baslow WI. This was a full house event with 78 tickets sold to WI members and their friends from all over Derbyshire and South Yorkshire. Great fun was had by all, on and off the stage.

No less than 51 outfits were seen on the catwalk from the Spring / Summer 23 collection. Some were modelled by members of the Baslow WI as well as customers and friends who kindly gave up their time. Ann‐Marie would again like to pass on her thanks to Dawn Melloy, Viv Miller, Anne Tipple and all the models who did a wonderful job. The evening’s raffle raised £269 was raised for Ashgate Hospice.

If you'd like to hear of future fashion shows and events, simply email ‘join’ to style@blancouture.co.uk and you'll join the blanclub.

The resplendent Renishaw Hall

We are very fortunate to have many stunning, historic buildings within or not too far from Chesterfield. Chatsworth House or Hardwick Hall may instantly spring to mind for readers, but one perhaps, lesser‐known stately home is the beautiful Renishaw Hall.

Nestled in the parish of Eckington, Renishaw Hall lies to the south east of Sheffield and close to Renishaw village which is northeast of Chesterfield. The Grade 1 listed property belongs to the Sitwell family and was built in 1625 by George Sitwell, who later became the High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 1653.

The family made their fortune mining, forging and rolling iron for use in the UK and overseas. The family then became gentry and owned a lot of land within Derbyshire.

In 1988, Sir Reresby and Alexandra Sitwell decided to open the hall’s doors to the public and it was Sir Reresby who led the guided tours, recalling interesting facts and telling witty anecdotes. Sir Reresby passed away in 2009, so Alexandra Sitwell took over the reins and is now firmly in the driving seat.

I went along to the Hall recently, sadly only armed with my camera phone, as it was an impromptu pit stop when working in the area. The weather was stunning and the bluebells were thriving and glistening in the afternoon sun.

Guided tours of the Hall are available (£17 adults and £10 children) on Fridays during the open season which also includes access to the gardens and grounds too. As I visited on a Wednesday, sadly, there wasn’t a tour, so I opted for a wander around the stunning award‐winning Italianate gardens instead.

In 1972, Sir Reresby planted a vineyard despite having many doubters who claimed it wouldn’t succeed due to the northerly location. Much to Sir Reresby’s delight, it did indeed succeed and was named the most northern vineyard in the UK until 1986. It is now run by Kieron Atkinson and the English Wine Project has won numerous awards for its produce over the years.

There are over 20 different areas in the garden to explore and has a variety of flora and fauna including native English bluebells, oriental poppies and hybrid magnolias as well as the National Collection of Yuccas which are housed in the Orangery.

The gardens have lovely ponds, fountains and a large lake to wander around too as well as a host of statues and busts to admire.

After a walk around the gardens, I headed to the Sitwell Museum to learn a little more about the family (certainly came in handy for this article) and look at the family heirlooms and artefacts.

Although I didn’t visit on this occasion, the Café at Sitwell is worth a visit. I went a number of years ago and the coffee and cake certainly made enough of an impression for me to clearly remember it. I’ll be back in the near future for a slice or two, I’m sure.

Coronation concert enjoyed by all

A wonderful Coronation fundraising concert was held at Hasland Methodist Church on Monday 8th May. Hasland Community Choir were the main stars of the day with visiting guest soloists too, led by choir leader Louise Collett. The choir entertained the audience beautifully ‐ and there were plenty of audience to entertain with standing room only. The concert began with all invited to sing the National Anthem, followed by choir favourite ‘Lollipop’ with some fantastic harmonising. Songs then included ‘Steelaway’ and ‘This little light of mine’, ‘A little help from my friends’ and a new

song for the choir ‐ ‘Can you hear me’, with the chorus signed by the choir too! The choir finished off with ‘Make your own kind of music’ before all were invited to join in with ‘Rule Britannia’.

Guitar duo and choir members Jeff and John performed two Everly Brothers hits during the concert ‐ ‘Beholden to you’ and ‘Let it be me’, as well as Ricky Nelson classic ‘There will never be anyone else but you for me.’

Alice Graham and Scarlett Murfin are both A’level students at St Mary’s School and also study singing with Louise. Alice sang the beautiful ‘On my own’ from Les Miserables and Scarlett performed the My Fair Lady

Classic ‘I could have danced all night’ followed by a wonderful performance of Puccini’s ‘O mio babbino caro’. Everyone was accompanied by fantastic pianist Judith Haywood from St Mary’s School.

The concert was free to attend and donation boxes were situated throughout the church. A raffle was held and tea and coffee plus a fabulous selection of cakes were served afterwards.

All proceeds from the concert donations, raffle and refreshments were collected for both British Heart Foundation and Chesterfield Royal Hospital Neo‐Natal Unit.

Chesterfield Male Voice Choir ‐ singing into a 2nd century!

Chesterfield Male

Voice Choir have proudly represented Chesterfield on a local and national stage since 1922.

They perform 3 major concerts a year and over recent years have performed at the Royal Albert Hall, Baltic Cruise Liners, Derby and Nottingham Cathedrals, Chatsworth House, Chesterfield Technique Stadium and of course The Winding Wheel and Crooked Spire Church.

They have also raised many thousands of pounds for local and national charities recently, joining with PEAK Performance for a carol concert over Christmas to raise £3000 for the Ukraine appeal. Led and trained by international quality Musical Director Andris Uqlilus and his wife Janine, a piano virtuoso, they meet every Tuesday evening at Whittington Moor Methodist Church on Scarsdale Road, Chesterfield at 7.30pm.

Like many musical groups the choir suffered many losses during the recent pandemic and many groups like this were not able to restart and continue as before. Happily, Chesterfield’s Male Voice Choir has been able to continue into its second century. Chairman of the Choir, Mike Spriggs said, “I am very grateful for everyone’s commitment during this difficult time”.

Singing a range of traditional male voice choir songs to modern favourites Mike went onto say that “it’s the friendship of the group” that he enjoys. The Choir provides a great facility for men of all ages to get out, sing and meet new people.

Chesterfield Male Voice Choir would love to welcome new members to the group. If you are a man and enjoy singing they would love you to come and see them. You don’t have to audition or be able to read music and you can sing whatever you are able to do. There are certainly no Pavarotti’s in the group! You will receive a warm welcome and all the support you need.

If you think you are interested or would like any more details please visit the Methodist Church in Whittington Moor on a Tuesday evening at 7.30pm.

How does your garden grow?

Hi everyone ‐ it’s time for Springtime gardening!

Prune early flowering shrubs as the blooms fade. Remove any growth that has been damaged by frost on evergreens and check variegated shrubs for stems of plain colour and remove the whole stem.

As soon as danger of frost has passed it is safe to plant out tender bedding plants. Plant out Dahlias raised earlier from seed or cuttings, apply bone meal and plant 2.5‐3 feet apart. Care for Dahlias by weeding and applying a liquid feed and make sure they are not eaten by slugs. Container grown plants from the garden centres can be planted out this month, if dry you will need to water the hole and all around when planted.

Roses need regular feeding to get a good display, select a terminal bud and nip out any others that are growing too closely. Watch for suckers growing from the rootstock, their vigorous shoots are very thorny and have pale green non‐glossy leaves. Scrape away the soil to the point where the sucker rises from the root and pull away or cut with secateurs so no snag is left to regrow. Check for blackspot or mildew on Roses and if you plant Salvias under the Roses this may stop the mildew.

Sow perennials biennials and herbaceous plants like Wallflowers in an outdoor seedbed. By autumn they will be ready to be planted in your correct location. After treading, water the seedbed thoroughly before raking level, sow thinly in drills. Most like a sunny site but a few, like Polyanthus and Primroses prefer a slightly shadier position.

Continue to layer shrubs and now is the best time for producing Clematis and Quince.

Pinch out the tips of Chrysanthemums, this will encourage the plant to produce four or five flowering stems.

Continue to feed and weed lawns and mow regularly.

Cut straggly rock plants like Aubretia hard back after flowering, 'a short back and sides' with shears will keep plants tidy and flowering well. Tidy up Oriental Poppies after flowering and seed heads can be saved.

Take pipings of Pinks by pulling young non‐flowering shoots out at a joint about 4‐5 inches long. Insert them to half their depth in soil enriched by peat and sharp sand, keep in a cold frame or shady place outdoors. Keep soil moist and they will be ready to plant out in September.

Increase Violas and Pansies by mounding them. This is done by taking 'Irishman's cuttings' which is covering with a mix of soil, well rotted garden compost and sharp sand. Water occasionally and in a few weeks some of the long stems will have rooted and given more plants. Divide these from the main plant and pot them up.

Snap faded flower heads from Rhododendrons and Azaleas, use secateurs to remove the faded blooms from Lilacs and Laburnum, clip

young shoots of Broom that have finished flowering back to within in inch of older wood to prevent a straggly appearance.

To try to prevent carrot fly sow Carrots amongst Onions to give off a stronger smell.

If you want to grow Raspberries but don't have much space, grow as a column by growing around a central stake and tying all plants into this. Most plants in the garden should be thriving at this time of year, dead heading needs to be done regularly, so a second flush of flowers will be produced. Roses need to be cut on a long stem, with a sloping cut just above a leaf joint, apply rose fertilizer to keep the blooms coming.

Autumn Crocus, Colchicums and Nerines need to be planted out now for a good show later, if soil is poorly drained add sand to the bottom of the hole and cover with soil, so the shoot is not damaged, mark with a plant label.

Many plants and shrubs can be propagated now by taking cuttings from non‐flowering shoots or where the flowers have finished. Cuttings should be 4‐6 inches long and taken below a leaf joint, remove lower leaves and dip in hormone rooting powder. Insert the cuttings into a well drained mixture of sand and peat and kept in a shaded cold frame. Keep moist until they have rooted.

Prune Philadelphus (Mock Orange) and Weigela shrubs by removing the stems that have flowered to leave strong shoots from lower down to flourish.

When Wisteria are large enough for the space, keep them within bounds by cutting back to within 6 leaves of the main stem. Border Carnations can be layered after flowering, this will give new plants as the original becomes old and straggly.

Bearded Irises need to be lifted and split. Remove young single rhizomes from the edge of the clump and cut the leaves back by half, replant firmly in manured ground with the top of the rhizome just above soil level. Discard any dead or damaged rhizomes.

All plants need to be watered during the drier, sunnier weather, especially pots, hanging baskets and window boxes.

Watch out for any Tomato disorders, keep outdoor Tomatoes to 3 trusses so they have time to ripen.

Cut back herbs so that you continue to get fresh young growth.

Happy Gardening - see you next time!

McFab talks with Lindsay Lohan’s Film Producer ‐ Michael Damian!

Lindsay Lohan is an icon. With classic films like Parent Trap, Mean Girls and Freaky Friday in her back catalogue, the American actress turned superstar enjoyed success after success from the late 90s into the 2000s.

After taking a break from the movie industry, Lindsay recently established a three‐picture deal with Netflix. Last year, she starred in their first film collaboration, the festive romantic comedy, Falling for Christmas. As a huge fan of Lindsay, I was thrilled to see her shine once again.

The media coined her big comeback as 'the Lohanaissance' and an important force behind this huge return was Michael Damian. Michael, alongside his wife Janeen, were two of the producers behind Falling for Christmas and I was overjoyed when I got the chance to speak to him about their work.

He told me, "We hope everyone (got) a chance to see Falling for Christmas (last) holiday season."

When I asked Michael about collaborating with the Lindsay, he said: "Janeen and I are so very proud of her. Lindsay work(s) very hard and really deliver(s) a marvellous performance."

Rumours are always swirling whether a direct Mean Girls sequel will happen. If Lindsay, alongside her original co‐stars, Amanda Seyfried, Rachel McAdams and Lacey Chabert returned in their roles as Cady, Regina, Karen and Gretchen, I think I'd die and go to glittery, gay heaven.

Recently, Jamie Lee Curtis, as well as Lindsay, also voiced their interest in working on a follow up to their hit Disney flick, Freaky Friday. Thanks to this, as well as an outpouring of thirst for this from fans, it was announced that there is a sequel to Freaky Friday apparently in development.

SA Wedding Photography

Since sequels could be part of Lindsay's developing career, I questioned Michael about whether he would be up for developing a second offering to one of Lindsay's iconic movies. He said that out of her filmography, choosing would be "a tough one," but he's "open to all ideas and really love(s) Lindsay’s past film projects."

It's great to see that Lindsay has supportive people, such as Michael around her, and her talents are being recognised once again. She's currently pregnant (congrats Lindsay!) and her next film with Michael, Irish Wish, will be released next year on Netflix.

To use the iconic phrase from Mean Girls, "that's so fetch!"

Hasland Resource Centre - a wonderful local facility

Hasland Resource Centre provide day care for older people and older people living with dementia from Monday ‐ Friday each week. Yet it seems many people aren’t aware that we have such a great resource on our doorstep ‐ on Heathervale Road in Hasland.

Unit Manager Kay Smith invited me to pop in for a tour and a chat about the services on offer. The team of day service workers and community support workers are clearly very proud of the facility, which Kay describes as a lovely team in a homely building.

When I visited the Resource Centre the clients were enjoying some music from the 60s and regular visitor June was having a dance with one of the support workers to a Tom Jones tune. It was such a lovely atmosphere and the team and their clients seemed happy and relaxed. All of the staff have received specialist dementia training.

I was given a tour and introduced to the Catering Supervisor, Laine, who proudly cooks all of the meals from scratch each day, choosing simple generational favourites such as home made soup with freshly baked bread, roast dinners and sponge cakes with custard. It smelled divine. Kay explained “Our services fall under Adult Social Care and Health at Derbyshire County Council. We take referrals from the Chesterfield area but also will take out of our catchment area if needed as there are so few facilities locally. To find out if people are eligible for our services potential clients or their families or carers have to ask for a social care assessment. If they are already in receipt of other council services such as home care then they can contact their existing social worker. If not then they can call Call Derbyshire on 01629 533190. Their details will be passed to an area team who will get in touch and arrange an assessment.

“Once a social worker has completed an assessment they will ascertain if the client is eligible for care and if so that person will be given a virtual budget from the council which will determine the amount of care and support they can receive and their social worker will contact me to discuss their care needs. The social worker will request a financial assessment in most cases as clients may have to contribute to the cost of the care they receive but this would depend on their income.” I asked Kay to talk me through a typical day care routine. She told me “We provide day care at Hasland Monday to Friday. On Wednesdays and Fridays the days are tailored for people who have higher level needs so on those days we have a maximum of six clients and extra staff so we can provide more support to the clients on these days. It could be that they need more specialist dementia support, have a more complex physical disability or maybe need more 1‐1 support at times. On Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays we have up to 12 clients.

“Our clients arrive with us around 10am. Transport can be offered to them if it’s assessed as a need or they are dropped off by their relatives or carers. If they use our third party transport option then the trained

drivers will ensure that doors are locked and keys are safe as we know these things can be a worry for clients and families living with dementia. Our transport is also wheelchair accessible.

“On arrival we sanitise hands and any equipment the clients have brought with them such as wheelchairs. We adhere to the Councils infection control policies and procedures. We then settle into the bright lounge room and enjoy tea and toast, crumpets or biscuits. Next we enjoy a short activity such as chair based exercise, or a sing song before we move onto the main planned activity for the day. It can be very difficult at times for those with dementia to concentrate for long periods so if the planned activity doesn’t suit the mood then we will change it to something that does. If anyone becomes very unsettled then we can take them out to our lovely garden area or through to another room for a while so that they can have some 1‐1 time. Our activities wind down around 11.50am. We then take a walk through to our dining room where they enjoy a two or three course meal prepared by Laine. Sometimes older people can lose their appetites but we are always amazed by how much some of our clients manage to eat. Everyone seems to enjoy the meals they have and we get regular compliments to the cook. One of our clients is 100 years old. Each week he can have up to six or seven cups of tea and he has a sweet tooth too. In the afternoon we wind down a little with music or a bit of dancing. We sometimes enjoy reminiscing with them or garden time. We have entertainers who visit from time to time too. For some clients, we make notes in a little notebook with comments on what they have been doing that day. This is important as some many not remember everything they have done when they get home so their family or carers can look in the notepad and chat to them about their day. This can then stimulate their memory. The family or carers can also add any notes for us into the book. Families often feedback to us that their loved ones sleep better and seem more settled after they have been to us for the day, so that’s great to hear.

Pics from top: Day care guests Dawn, Christine and June (dancing) with Maureen who is showing off the manicure she enjoyed at the centre. Some of the fantastic artwork produced by the clients including June’s fox. The artwork is displayed all around the centre. The lovely bright garden and dining room and the fully equipped changing space.

Since lockdown we’ve noticed that we have more clients with higher needs. We have addressed this by offering an extra day for this client group. Day care can sometimes make the difference between them being able to stay in their own homes as it gives families some time to themselves.

We are trained to help our clients with their toilet needs when needed, including using the hoists and other moving and handling equipment. Some may just need a reminder of where the bathroom is. At the start of the service, we complete a personal service plan over the first six weeks for each person. We learn about their needs and support they require whilst they are with us at the centre to enable us to provide the best possible care in a person centred way. We find out all about their likes and dislikes, allergies and if they are on any medications ‐ this information might come from their social worker, family or the client themselves. We are all trained in the safe administration of medication and all staff have competency observations. Each person also has a moving and handling plan and an emergency evacuation plan. Everything that we do is in the clients best interest ‐ that is our goal. Before Covid hit we offered a bathing facility to our clients. They could come to the centre with their carer to use our tailored accessible bathroom. Sadly during the lockdowns we had to close the service but we aim to reinstate the bathing facility very soon so this service will become available again.

“If you would like to take a look around the centre for yourself or a loved one then you can do this before proceeding with a referral. You can also book in for a free taster session. We hope to increase our Monday, Tuesday and Thursday day care capacity to 15 people soon so the waiting lists will be very low.”

Give Kay a call on 01629 537505 if this is something that you would like to arrange.

How can loneliness become belonging?

A decade or so ago, a few people started to describe loneliness as an epidemic, to explain how it affects people across our country. They could not have foreseen that a real epidemic was just around the corner. Now we all know how Covid 19 made everyone change the way they socialised. Yet while we are social animals, many of us are struggling to un‐learn the behaviours that helped combat Covid.

For those that were already feeling isolated, it has become harder to get out of that rut. Thankfully, awareness of loneliness is rising. Since Covid, more people have been moved to volunteer where they live, or to help out in some small way to build better communities.

Can loneliness become belonging? What does it take to help people connect, to forge friendships, and create new bonds between residents? At the Feeling Connected project, we are running Connectedness Workshops to explore these questions. It is clear that we need a flourishing of groups, activities, events and projects in our neighbourhoods. And to organise these we need even more folks to step up and make them happen.

But what does it mean to organise something in your community? Does it have to involve boring meetings, arguing with neighbours, or waiting for decisions to be made by ‘higher‐ups’? The Feeling Connected project aims to make it easier to start a community activity or

group. We will provide training and support to anyone with a passion for bringing people together, or with an idea that can engage residents and create connections. If you are already organising something where you live, we need you to share your experience and encourage others. If you want to join our conversations about loneliness and belonging, or if you’d like to get involved there are three ways:

• Come to a Connectedness Workshop, the next one is at the Hasland Club on Hampton Street, Wednesday June 21st.

• Pop‐in to our community centre in Chesterfield ‐called The Hub @ Low Pavement, 61 New Square ‐from Monday to Thursday.

• Find us on facebook @feelingconnectedDVA or visit: www.feelingconnected.org.uk

To tackle loneliness and isolation we need a flourishing of neighbourhood based groups, projects, events and activities, that can create connectedness and belonging.

Chesterfield Woodcarving Group

meet each Wednesday from 11am‐2pm at Calow Chuch Hall. I was invited to visit the group by Graham Monks, who is a relative newcomer to woodcarving. I was astounded by the pieces of artwork being created by the group.

The group originally formed in Bolsover and subsequently moved to Calow around 10 years ago. There can be up to 14 members come along, men and women, but this varies each week. Graham explained that anyone is welcome to come along to the group. He started out around a year ago when he decided to come along with his father in law, Barry, a long term member. “Beginners are welcome. I hadn’t done any woodwork since school when I first started. My first piece was a wizard bird box which I’m pleased with. You bring your own wood and tools, but you can borrow a chisel for a week or two if you prefer, to see how you get on. Everyone is happy to help you to get started. There are lots of guides and ideas available on the internet as well as woodcarving magazines.

“I think that carving is good for the mind, its a three dimensional challenge to turn something from a picture into a 3D model. We bring our sandwiches and tea and coffee. It’s very sociable.”

Barry told me “I started woodcarving when I retired, about 22 years ago. I really enjoy it and find it very therapeutic. It helps with dexterity in your hands and keeps your brain active. A piece of my work such as my clock (top left) can take up to a year to complete. I might pick it up for a while, then move to something else and then come back to it.”

David was working on a Green Man inspired piece on the day of my visit. He told me “I enjoy the group atmosphere and camaraderie. We each help to steer each others work and I get help and inspiration for my own pieces. I recently finished a Harvest Swag which I spent around three months working on. I sometimes get inspiration from headstone artwork as there are some lovely floral designs in stone. A circular plaque that I carved was taken from a stone in Spital Cemetery. Wood can be trickier to carve than stone as each piece is different and you have to work with the grain.

“The sessions pass a lovely mid morning to mid afternoon each week. We pick up tips from each other and pass on our own skills too. It’s a very friendly group.”

Ken joined the group around seven years. He is a keen woodworker and has created many projects from rocking horses to intricate shoes and walking sticks. Brian was working on a Celtic knot. He told me “Planning is the key. You have to plan how to change something from a picture to 3D, measuring and planning each part from the start.”

New members are always welcome. If you’d like to find out more or give the group a try contact Graham Monks on 07802 819094 or David Parsons on 01246 239591.

The next session is on Saturday 10th June. Cllr Amanda Serjeant said “It’s fantastic that we have our Safer Neighbourhoods Team here in Hasland every month. Its an opportunity for all the community including Spital to come and raise issues. I’d encourage everyone to sign up to www.derbyshirealert.co.uk to keep up to date with crime alerts from the Police”.

Concern over GP appointments

Speedwatch goes from strength to strength

Residents have been in touch with us about the difficulties they’re having accessing a GP appointment in Hasland and Spital. Cllr Amanda Serjeant and Cllr Stuart Brittain met with Wes Streeting, Shadow Labour Health Secretary, who came to Hasland to discuss these concerns. New data from the NHS has revealed that nearly 9,000 people in Chesterfield faced a wait of 28 days or more to see a GP last month. Cllr Stuart Brittain said, “We know how hard our GP’s and dedicated Healthcare staff work. This is down to a lack of GP’s being trained and not enough being done to retain the ones we have. The NHS needs a workforce plan”.

Monthly Speedwatch Sessions continue around Hasland and Spital. New Volunteers are welcome. Please contact Cllr Amanda Serjeant on the details below for more information. Councillor Dave Allen said “I am pleased that this group is starting to make a real impact locally and raising awareness of the dangers of speeding. I’m happy I could help fund this through my Community Leadership Fund”.

New Mayor for Chesterfield is Hasland Councillor!

Hasland Councillor Mick Brady is set to begin his term of office as Chesterfield’s 382nd Mayor. Councillor Brady said: “Representing the people of the borough in the role of Mayor is a special honour and I am extremely proud to take up office for the coming year. I hope to meet as many residents as possible, while raising much‐needed funds for two very deserving local charities.”

This year’s Mayor’s Appeal will support two local charities ‐ Chesterfield Community Trust and The Royal Hospital Charity. More information about these important local charities and the work they do can be found at www.spireitetrust.org.uk and www.chesterfieldroyal.nhs.uk.

We hold regular Street Surgeries in a different part of Hasland each time to listen to local residents concerns. But you don’t have to wait ‐ here are our contact details:

The African Caribbean Association of Chesterfield visit the House of Commons

Last month The African Caribbean Association of Chesterfield went on a trip to the House of Commons, along with Toby Perkins. The group had a fantastic day including a tour of The House of Commons, The House of Lords and the chambers. This was a very worthwhile trip and they all enjoyed it very much.

I recently visited County Hall with students from Hasland Junior School and Christchurch School.

The children were given a tour of the halls and were then given a great opportunity to talk about green issues in the council chambers. Although apprehensive to begin with they soon found their voices and kept on going ‐ great work!

Each school had an opportunity to say what they are doing in school for the environment and green issues. Moving forwards I will be helping both schools with their green projects including arranging funding from The Members Community Leadership Fund to help them with their initiatives.

Grassmoor Group celebrates Coronation

Grassmoor Pensioners Group enjoyed a Coronation celebration in May. I was very happy to be able to part fund this. The group had a great time and have thanked me for my help.

Mick Brady elected as Mayor

Hasland Councillor Mick Brady has been elected as Mayor of Chesterfield. His consort will be Councillor Suzie Perkins. This is a great recognition of many years of hard work and we look forward to working with him this year and seeing his success.

Please come along to our open surgeries if you’d like to discuss any local community issues.

If you’re worried about the cost of living crisis we have lots of information about grants and help available. We can discuss any issues that you are concerned about such as parking or street lights.

My community area includes Hasland (from the town centre to Penmore House), Hady, Spital, Derby Road, Piccadilly and the Park Road area.

Local Theatre Review

HASLAND THEATRE COMPANY UNDER THE BLUE SKY

Monday 15th ‐ Saturday 20th May 2023

Hasland Theatre Company are a completely independent theatre group, producing excellent and varied plays out of their self run playhouse on Storforth Lane, Hasland.

It’s so important to support local theatre and the group have plenty of excellent productions coming up ‐ all for just £10 a ticket! Please pop along when you can and enjoy a fantastic evening of theatre.

Act 1 ‐ Feb 1996 ‐ East London

Helen and Nick are teachers at the same school. Helen clearly adores Nick but Nick is oafish and seemingly unaware of her feelings ‐or is he just uncaring? The play begins against a backdrop of a news report about an IRA bomb in Canary Wharf. They talk about the morality of the events but Nick is soon to drop his own bombshell. Helen thinks he will declare his love, instead he tells her he is moving away to work at a different school. She is heartbroken ‐ he insists he doesn’t know if he can think of her in the same way. Eventually Helen’s emotions get the better of her and she grabs the kitchen knife that she has been using to help him to prepare dinner…

Leila Hunt and Harry Nixon brought these two characters to life beautifully. Leila’s passion and Harry’s emotional aloofness made for an exciting tense moment between the two before they decide to put it all behind them and continue their friendly evening.

Act 2 ‐ May 1997 ‐ Hornchurch, Essex

The act began with a saucy drunken scene between teachers Michelle and Graham.

Heather Davies and Nathan McNicholas had the audience gasping at their passionate encounter after their night out. Graham played the role of a wounded soldier returned from battle and Michelle his saucy nurse. But all is not as it seems.

Michelle has been dumped by Nick, a teacher who moved to her school some time before. It transpires she blames his jealous friend Helen who is still on the scene and is now following him to Essex to work at the same school.

Michelle had planned to take her revenge by sleeping with the long suffering Graham ‐ but the mood soon unravelled as she set about a bottle of vodka and told Graham about his inadequacies as a man. She catalogued her recent conquests which range from the hilarious to the horrible, disclosing the abuse she suffered at the hands of one of them.

Graham has had enough and flips ‐ revealing his own sinister side and the photos he holds of the moments he has stalked Michelle.

Heather was fantastic as Michelle. This is the best role I have seen her in. We travelled a rollercoaster of emotions with her before she finally gives in to Graham’s blackmail.

Nathan McNicholas played the role of the downtrodden Graham perfectly, revealing his nasty streak when he tells Michelle that he knows all of her secrets. This act was definitely a play of contrasts with some hilarious moments and some very uncomfortable ones.

Act 3 ‐ August 1998 ‐ Tiverton, Devon Robert and Anne are friends with a 20 year age gap. Both teachers, they spend their school holidays holidaying together as friends, despite an obvious connection.

Anne tells Robert that she doesn’t think they should holiday together any more, she’s worried she’s holding him back from people his own age. She describes the story of her Auntie May and her lost war time love. But Robert believes you make your own happiness. He recently lost a colleague ‐ Helen ‐ to a tragic car accident. Helen had been driving to visit Nick, who had called her late at night as he needed some soothing. Robert knew that Nick didn’t love Helen but was stringing her along.

Dare they commit to each other despite their different stages of life? Is love more important?

It was great to see Nicky Beards in a strong role. She is so eloquent on stage, perfectly portraying an independent woman who loves a man so much that she would be willing to let him go.

Steve Cowley was utterly convincing as Robert. It seems he has been bumbling along happy to be holidaying with Anne, rather than not seeing her at all. When faced with the thought of losing her he came to life and stood up to his feelings, winning her over and convincing her to give it a go.

Director Mark Daly produced a fantastic evening for us all. I was engrossed in each act as a separate story but enjoying the subtle connections too.

Each play was set beautifully, ranging from a fully fitted kitchen to a bedroom to a sunny garden ‐ all reset within five minute intervals.

The musical interludes were great too, with a range of tunes to complement the scenes. Well done to all of the team.

The Chairman’s thoughts by

Hi everyone ‐ Supporting the Spireites is a passion that frustrates us all at times. That can certainly be said about our current season, with many highs and a few lows along the way.

The season ended on a high note with a trip to Wembley, but then a real low at the outcome of the game. I have to say that I am immensely proud of the team and manager / staff. Getting to the Wembley Arch marked the third year in a row that showed improvement on the previous year. Following that trend then nothing short of a promotion next season will do.

Notts County can count themselves very lucky in both play off games, first against Borehamwood and then against us in the final. On play off day I thought we thoroughly deserved to go through. Although Notts County had more of the ball they didn’t create as many chances as we did and the game could have been over by half time. It was a real disappointment to be two minutes away from the EFL. I thought our supporters once again were magnificent, outsinging their rivals all afternoon.

In reality Notts County had done more than enough all season to warrant automatic promotion and the sooner the football pyramid comes to it’s senses and rectifies the anomaly in the National League the better. There should be two automatic promotion places and a third through the play offs. It will come, but I fear not for next season. The powers that be don’t move that quickly.

On a personal note, the day was one that I will remember for a long time with a sense of pride in the whole club, board, manager, staff, players and most importantly the supporters. It was an emotional day and standing there in the royal box with my wife I had to pinch myself. After Andy Dallas scored for us early I really thought it was going to be our day. It was certainly an emotional rollercoaster. Undone by two goals that on many other occasions would not have happened in the same way.

I have just about come to terms with it and we go once again in the National League next season. The Board will support Paul Cook with a competitive budget and the process of strengthening the team has already begun. We hope to sign a young goalkeeper in the very near future and have just completed the signing of Bailey Hobson from Alfreton. He is an exciting young player for the future.

The recruitment team have a number of targets that we are pursuing in an effort to give us the quality we need to succeed next season. We would love to keep Andy Dallas but much will depend on him and the

offers he gets to play in the EFL.

Off the field we continue to move forward with great purpose. Bridget, Alison and Jim are doing a phenomenal job increasing the flow of non footballing income into the club as is Maddie in our conference and banqueting offer. Season ticket sales have been brilliant so far with the early bird totalling in excess of 3700. This coming year will see supporters be able to purchase season tickets in the North Stand for the first time. Sales of the new shirts have been brilliant with many pre‐ordered for June delivery.

Behind the scenes we continue to improve our technology and our back office systems and thanks to our staff for their commitment. Ashley Kirk is working really hard with John Croot and Andrew Fantom on the club’s administration and finances ensuring we have the systems and finances to take us forward.

Also a big thank you to my colleagues on the board for all their efforts and support this season. A special thank you goes to Phil Kirk who has stepped into the breach on a number of occasions and helped the football club and the Trust. His support is critical. Thanks for listening. Mike

Stories from Spital Cemetery

From travelling vans to hotbeds of vice and immorality

Article contributed by Andy Miles ‐Friends of Spital Cemetery.

In the Roman Catholic area of Spital Cemetery we had an underscrub of roses, brambles, ivy and self‐set ash which was cut back and removed by the Community Pay Back Team revealing long lost gravestones. Among them that of Elizabeth and Gehazi Quinton. Gehazi was born in Doncaster in 1849 and Elizabeth Horobin in Staffordshire in 1848. Elizabeth (known as Betsy) married Gehazi Quinton at Clowne Parish Church on Christmas Day 1868. In 1891 they were living in a caravan in Donovan’s Yard in Battersea with their children, William 18, Hannah 17, Thomas 15, Caroline 13, Hezekiah 10, Gehazi 6, and Mary 6. Gehazi’s mother Hannah, 69 was also living with them. In 1901 they were living in a travelling van on North Wingfield Road, Hasland alongside the travelling van occupied by his sons Thomas and Hezekiah. They are described as Proprietors of a Travelling Exhibition, Gehazi being described as a Shooting Gallery Proprietor. In 1911 part of the Quinton family was living in the caravans on Bold Rodney Yard.

Having spent most of his life travelling, by 1911 Gehazi became the ‘Housekeeper’ of a Lodging House at 43 Hipper Street. At that time eight family members were in the house and thirty‐two other people, including four families, nine single people, three widowers and three widows. Lodging Houses were a common phenomenon in Victorian times. A series of articles in the Derbyshire Times in 1901 described life in some of these Lodging Houses. The author of the articles, Andrew Hall, was in 1901 living in a Lodging House in Knifesmithgate. At that time the dwelling had fifty‐five boarders of whom thirty‐two were navvies.

He stated “I have been manager of a house in Chesterfield for four months, and during that period the ashpit has been emptied twice, although there are four shops as well as the house making use of it. The house itself is in a bad state, and after every shower of rain, the water comes in and floods the place ankle deep, but no one seems to care. I am told that most other lodging houses are in a similar condition. During the whole time that I have been here I have never seen an Inspector, though I believe there is one paid; nor the Medical Officer of Health, nor, in fact, any of the authorities whose duty it is to see if the place is fit for habitation or not.”

“And now I will endeavour to deal with the lodgers themselves. As a class, they are mostly the off scourings of society, and comprise the lame, the lazy, the drunken and the dissolute, the imposters and the unfortunate who cannot help themselves and are obliged to find shelter where they can. Very many of them have been brought up to the life, and have never known any other, and their habits, like their conversation, is dirty in the extreme. Yet these people are the bitterest opponents of any change for the better, and where a house is kept thoroughly clean and they are not allowed to wallow in their own filth, they will not go. They shun such places as they would a

police station. I have no ragmen or umbrella menders in the house I am connected with.”

Describing Lodging Houses as hotbeds of vice and immorality this lifetime dweller within such establishments presented a “plain unvarnished tale of fact, not fiction, of personal experience, not gossip and rumour obtained second hand.”

“At Alfreton there is just now a tunnel in course of construction, and as a result lodgings are very scarce. At Ripley there are in many houses three men, or if there is a double bed, 6 men for each bed every 24 hours; the moment one man gets out there is another waiting to take his place!”

“Another dreadful place is Mansfield. Some 18 months ago I stayed there one night. I made enquiries and was directed to a certain house, which I was informed was the best, I fear Mansfield will have moved a mile or two since then, for I found the company so numerous that I climbed the wall at 2 o’clock in the morning and lay under a hedge.”

“I have heard a very bad account of Dronfield but I have not been there. Eckington I have not been since the beginning of the Great Central Railway extension from Beighton to Annersley. I then stayed there two nights and had to sleep with 8 or 9 more on the cold stone floor..”

In the early 1870’s, following a coal strike in Scotland, Andrew Hall crossed the border and stayed in a Lodging House in Newcastle‐Upon‐Tyne. He met a boilermaker who was familiar with Lodging Houses and gave him advice.

Retaining 4d to pay for his lodgings and a penny for tea and sugar and a little bread he rented a room. He reports that the sight that met his view almost baffles description. Just inside the door was a one‐armed sailor and his woman having a quarrel with a rag and bone merchant and his female companion. All four were nearly drunk and screaming at the top of their voices while the foul oaths and filthy language used in profusion on all sides was enough to terrify anyone not used to such scenes.

The room was so small that a third of the people in it had to stand. His companion elbowed his way through the crowd and returned with an old teapot with half a spout, one old jam jar and a rusty spoon. They sat at the table to take tea and at the same table was an umbrella mender with a stock of old frames he had picked up from a refuse heap.

They made way for a rag and bone man and his woman. She had an old compressed‐beef tin in which she was boiling some black treacle to make

candy for the children who brought rags in exchange. The couple did not take the trouble to wash their hands, nor yet to wipe the table, but dust and ashes from the old umbrellas, breadcrumbs, rind of bacon, and other remains were simply brushed aside with the hand, and the hot candy was poured out on the soiled table and worked with their dirty hands, until cold enough to put on one side.

On going upstairs the room had eleven beds, which were just bundles of rags. His companion said that it was advisable to “peel off”, to “Tom Sawyer it” or in other words, to strip. This was because the vermin in the beds would be found sufficient for the occasion without taking any away in his clothing!

He slept little and at an early hour of the morning they went downstairs, on all sides there was squalor everywhere. There were no facilities for washing, they had to wash under a tap, and there was one towel between 80 persons, so they had to wipe their faces with a muffler.

In 1894 he worked for Logan and Hemmingway on the Great Central Railway in Chesterfield. He lodged at the ‘Bee Hive’ kept at that time by Mrs Spowage. He said “A certain fellow “C” was lodging there and I had heard complaints and had observed certain actions which had excited my suspicions, so I watched him carefully. One Saturday morning a man came in from work. He had been at work all night in the tunnel and had to go on again at two o’clock. He got paid at 6 o’clock that morning, and had had some drink. Not wishing to go to bed, lest he should not be able to go at 2 o’clock, he asked me if he might lie down on one of the seats in the corner. Later on, as I passed through the kitchen, my attention was attracted to where this man lay, and there was “C” in the act of rifling his pockets. I had a bucket in my hand, I swung the bucket round and struck “C” with all my might on the head with it, at the same time calling on the kitchen man to go for a constable. I had the satisfaction of knowing that he was afterwards apprehended for stealing a pair of boots and a silk handkerchief.”

The Common Lodging House Acts of 1851 and 1853 and the Public Health Act of 1875 were supposed to improve Loding Houses, but they had little effect.

The Friends of Spital Cemetery provide guided tours of the cemetery. The June tour will be at 1pm on Sunday 11th, and the July tour at 1pm on Sunday 9th. Meet at the bottom gate. Find us on Facebook

Coronation celebrations

Members of church enjoyed a Coronation lunch on Sunday 7th May after the morning service. A big thank you to all in the community who supported our Coronation weekend. A special thanks goes to the friends who come along to both our Friendship Group and Crafty Chit Chat. It took a lot of forward planning and busy hands to knit or crochet the fantastic variety of rosettes which were made into wreaths by attaching them to wire rings. These were used to decorate the interior of the church, fixing them to the church windows and making a feature at the very front of Church.

Pop up cake stall - Saturday 19th May

Thanks to the team of volunteers for making this successful fundraising event possible. They include members of church and friends who baked the wonderful selection of cakes for sale on the stalls inside and outside. Thanks also to the team from ‘Danceworks’ who prepared and served refreshments and welcomed the customers.

All Donations and proceeds from the day will go towards Christian Aid Week 2023. A Christian Aid slide show was shown in th church during the event. An Invitation to: Pet /Animal Blessing Gathering

on 2nd July 2023 @3pm

Blessing of Pets / Animals is attributed to St. Francis of Assisi, who held a great sense of care and respect for each creature (he even preached to birds). It is alleged the traditional blessing of the animals has been held since 1930, when priests blessed livestock. In recent years, several churches worldwide hold Pet Blessings Services on 4th October to celebrate the Feast of Saint Francis with a blessing of animals and prayers for creation.

We hold our Pet Blessing Gathering in July; this is a great opportunity to thank God for the gift of animals, recognising our mutual interdependence with God’s creatures.

We acknowledge losing a pet is a traumatic experience because we form very deep bonds with our pets and miss them long after they have died. In our prayers we remember people whose pets recently died.

At our Pet Blessing Gathering we recognise the significance of the act of blessing, and appreciate the important role pets have in our lives, and for this reason, you are invited to join us on 2nd July, at 3pm for a Pet Blessing Gathering. Bring your Pet along! You are all welcome! For safety, we request all pets be on lead, or in a cage. Or if you prefer, you may bring a photo and we will bless your Pet.

Refreshments and Treats served afterwards

Blessings to you all
