f not the greatest day in the history of the club, this has to be the greatest win witnessed by Boro fans. And what a win it was, Football League new boys Boro were sitting in 13th place in Division Two, just getting used to their new found status when Premier League Newcastle came to town. thrilling first half. Stacy Long opened the scoring when he forced the ball in off Mike Williamson on 50 minutes and five minutes later Michael Bostwick doubled the advantage. Newcastle struggled to find a way back into the game and when sub Cheik Tiote was sent off all looked lost. In a feisty finish Joey Barton did lash the Toon back into the game however but as the visitors went in search of a leveller, it was Boro who had the last laugh, Peter Winn running through to guide Boro into the next round.
