MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ———— Today is the penultimate league fixture of 2020/21 season at The Abbey – a season that has been so intense but seems to have flown by recently. We have had a number of markers along the way that have guided us and signposted us towards the final stages, but they have crept up on us quite quickly. The past two results have been really good performances, different in nature but both high in quality, work ethic and adaptability. Tuesday’s match at Leyton Orient was an exciting watch, full of attacking intent from both sides. There would have been some atmosphere in normal times. As it was, the 11 travelling fans making use of the flats overlooking the pitch sung all night and made it feel like there were more people than in reality. It’s quite remarkable how accustomed we have become to playing in empty stadiums, and the difference, even the smallest number of supporters can make. With just three games remaining, we understand the many permutations that the season end could bring about. In the end, we have to continue delivering performance levels and work levels that give us the best chance of gaining the victories we need. The run of form Stevenage have been on since we met in December has been very good, and Alex will no doubt be pleased with the progress they have made. As a man with links and history with our club, I am pleased for him that he has taken to the job well and as first time managers, we both understand the challenges that this year has provided and he will no doubt be as excited as I am in hope of a return to more normal times next season. Our earlier meeting saw them narrowly beat us on a day where we didn’t find the level we want to be at. It was a close game that nearly returned a point in the dying stages. We both have our motivations for today though and will want to keep maintaining the momentum we have both built. It should make for a good contest. www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Today is Community Trust Takeover Day. Many words have been spoken of the Community Trust in recent months, and rightly so. The recently published impact report and the live stream event on Facebook clearly outlined the positive influence that has been undertaken and delivered throughout the pandemic in the past twelve months. Sam Gomarsall deserves huge recognition for his leadership, but will be the first to credit a team of people who not only deliver their specific roles and areas with quality, but they are all wired to work hard, motivated by a human desire to enrich lives, serve others and create a fairer, more equal society. What excellent values we have driving us on. We hope in the months and years ahead that the scope of this work can broaden and its impact will become greater. Raising awareness and raising funds will make a difference. We have the ability to connect with thousands of people from across this city, all from different backgrounds with varying experiences. But we can all play a part in helping. Congratulations to the Community Trust staff for your excellent work, to all those who help raise funds, volunteer and invest in supporting these good works. And thank you, for making people in our City proud of the impact we are having.■

Ian————Mather CEO ———— Welcome to our closest neighbours Stevenage who have put in some very strong performances since January to secure their League 2 status with a comfortable points margin. As ever with our local rivals we can still expect a tough game. For the U’s the prospect of promotion to League 1 is tantalisingly close. Thanks to the fixture list pitching Morecambe against Bolton today a win will be sufficient to send us up – with two games left to play. This is possible due to the great result we had on Tuesday against a strong Leyton Orient side. Thanks to the ingenuity of the 11 fans who booked Air B&B apartments we had some very loud support at the game. It was a great reminder of what we have missed for most of this season. The Loud 11 did all fans proud with their endless cheering and humour. All our hope and expectation is that we will have unrestricted crowds for when the new season starts on 7 August. Today we are celebrating the work of our Community Trust who have done so much brilliant work over the last year. I have no doubt that they, with the full support of the Club, have made a real difference to many lives through a very difficult period. Trust manager, Sam Gomarsall and his team deserve a huge amount of credit for working tirelessly to make a difference. If you want to be impressed – have a read of their Impact Report click here. Away from the pitch the story of the week was clearly the shambles of the proposed European Super League. In all of the hours of media coverage I saw supporter speak in favour of this other than one football fan in each of Beijing and Dubai. I guess they represented the new type of fans the leadership of ESL thought they could attract to replace what they referred to as “legacy fans”. I cannot recall such a big business blunder since EMI rejected the Beatles. The legacy fans are what make football come alive and they (including me) do not want www.cambridge-united.co.uk

to watch a sterile league format that removes jeopardy and joy from the game. What this epic error should tell us is that we have to tackle the question of sustainability in football. The football business generates billions of pounds in revenue, yet the current business model leads to most clubs having to budget for a loss. We need a fairer distribution of the cash and some form of regulation on expenditure. It is time for a complete overhaul of the way football operates to ensure we have strong local clubs for the legacy fans of the future. But, back to the here and now. A tough game with three important points to play for. Let’s hope it ends with us planning to visit some new grounds next season. Download your iFollow pass and enjoy the game. ■

Sam Gomarsall ———— Community Trust Manager ———— Back in March of last year, we were all set for our “matchday takeover” to take place vs Cheltenham Town FC. We had over 1,000 children who had attended our anti-discrimination assemblies ready to pack the Mead, Plant & Grab stand; we had a showcase of our disability sport participants’ talents on the pitch set to take place at half-time and there were so many other initiatives lined up for a fantastic matchday highlighting the work of the Community Trust. It’s nice to be able to write programme notes before this year’s Community Trust Matchday Takeover with a little bit more certainty that the match will actually go ahead! Of course, in a slightly manic morning the
day before the game, the matchday was postponed due to increasing coronavirus concerns. One week later, Cambridge United launched the ‘Here For U’s’ programme providing practical, emotional and physical support to its’ local community. You can read & see more about what we did in those first few weeks & months on page 20. Throughout this programme, you will read about the impact that we have had in our local community this past year – we hope you feel an immense sense of pride that your football club ‘never went away’ and continued to change lives for the better. We hope you are inspired by the stories involved within this programme: whether CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V STEVENAGE FC
9 it’s the way that seniors have been kept connected to her friends by virtual seniors’ afternoon teas or the way disability sport participants have been empowered to keep mentally & physically healthy in the most trying of circumstances. You can see even more of the work of the Community Trust by reading through our impact report click here. We have worked this past year with multiple stakeholders across Cambridge to be part of a city-wide fightback to Covid-19. We exist to serve an incredible city which is home to world-class universities and a flourishing science, tech and business sector. However, we also must recognise the multitude of inequalities that exist within Cambridge. Our club’s home is the Abbey Ward where almost 1 in 3 children are growing up in poverty and there are differences in life expectancy of almost 10 years between the richest and poorest areas of the city. We think that there is a real risk that the pandemic will increase this level of disparity. Instead, we want to help Cambridge build back better as a healthier,
www.cambridge-united.co.uk
stronger & more equal city. Indeed, in a year where Marcus Rashford changed government policy on free school meals, you will see the way that we worked with partners to tackle food poverty within our city. We cooked & delivered over 1,700 meals but also began to run Activate Holiday Lunch Activity Sessions (page 19). I want to pay special tribute to the support of our friends at AstraZeneca, Cambridge United’s Community Sponsor, in supporting this programme alongside continuing their vital partnership on the Active Science programme (page 11). Over this past year, we simply could not have provided the level of support we did without the contributions of Cambridge United supporters. Thank you to every single fan who donated to the Here For U’s campaign alongside the numerous offers from fans to volunteer. We hope that you are proud of the impact your club is making; your continued support can help us make a tangible difference in the way our city builds back from this pandemic. Thank you. ■

AstraZeneca ———— Partnership Goes from Strength to Strength ———— AstraZeneca’s Community Sponsorship supports Cambridge United and its Community Trust in our attempt to be at the heart of a healthier, stronger and more equal Cambridge. Nick Fairbairn, our Commercial Manager, spoke with Steve Twait, AstraZeneca’s vice-president for Alliance and Integration Management about exactly why AstraZeneca has chosen to support their local football club in this way. Through their flagship programme, Active Science, Cambridge United Community Trust and AstraZeneca want to inspire the next generation of scientists. Whilst the programme hasn’t been able to take place in the same format in schools as usual this year, the content has been moved online. Over the past two weeks, the Community Trust have engaged a staggering 1,800 students across 14 schools in our first-ever Active Science virtual assemblies ensuring that children across our community still get the opportunity to see the links between science
www.cambridge-united.co.uk
& sport and we hope begin to see the potential of a career in science. In so-called “normal times”, Active Science is a series of six one-hour long lessons, aimed at Year 5/6 pupils. It involves, for example, children running with parachutes in order to demonstrate the aerodynamics of force or seeing the effects of different exercises on their cardiovascular system. Or in the words of one year 5: “Learning science is way more awesome than I thought.” Over 3,000 pupils have completed the programme in total and with visits from AstraZeneca scientists & Cambridge United Football players, the programme focuses on those schools in disadvantaged communities and is vital in supporting wider participation in science. We are grateful to AstraZeneca for their continued support of the club & community trust and you can see more about the Holiday Lunch programme they support on page 19. ■

WELLBEING ———— Alfie’s story ———— Alfie’s story demonstrates the wrap-around care and support the Community Trust can offer individuals with regards to their physical and mental health. Empowering people like Alfie demonstrates the power the programmes we deliver can have on our local community and we hope by sharing these stories, more people will be able to access our services. The free “Support U’s” weekly mental health football session is available for males aged between 18-65, and aims to improve both physical and mental fitness by providing an opportunity for those who participate to take part in some physical activity whilst building relationships, being part of a team and boosting self-confidence. Being able to offer support to fans of the football club and wider community is a key element of Cambridge United’s Mental Health Charter and aim of being a mentally healthy football club. As a club, we believe that everybody has mental health and we
all experience ups and downs. We believe that harnessing the positive power of football and physical activity will provide real benefits to both physical and mental fitness within our fanbase and to the wider community. The sessions are from 11-12pm on Wednesday morning and take place at the Abbey Leisure Complex, CB5 8NT. In normal times, we then go back to the Abbey Stadium to have a cup of tea or coffee! It is open for all, but particularly focused on those looking to improve their mental and physical fitness. Encouraging connectivity and peer support through accessible communitybased wellbeing activities is at the heart of what we do. Whether through walking football sessions, our Man vs FAT weight management programme, community bootcamps or running groups: we want to see a Healthier Cambridge. ASTRAZENECA ———— Activate Holiday Lunches Programme ———— The Activate Holiday Lunch Programme programme, kindly sponsored by AstraZeneca, engaged young people in (school) years 1-9. This Easter holiday, 180 children from the Abbey, North Cambridge & Trumpington wards had the chance to engage in fun football & multi-sport sessions. They also had the option to receive a free takeaway lunch after the session finished and 376 free healthy meals to participants, the majority of whom receive free school meals. We first ran this in last summer as coronavirus restrictions began to ease & 150 young people engaged with the programme with 350 total hours of activity! One parent told CUCT what they thought, “the sessions were fantastic, amazingly run and [we were] just so grateful we were able to come. It made a huge difference to all of our mental health to have an organised activity to do. Thank you so much.” School holidays can be particular pressure points for some families because of increased
www.cambridge-united.co.uk
costs and reduced incomes. For some children that can lead to a holiday experience gap, with children from disadvantaged families less likely to access organised out-of-school activities, more likely to experience ‘unhealthy holidays’ in terms of nutrition and physical health & more likely to experience social isolation. We organised these Activate sessions with this in mind and two-thirds of parents’ felt that these had helped their finances. Alongside this, 90% of parents/carers either strongly agreed or agreed that the participant felt more inspired and engaged after attending the sessions and 80% felt their child’s mental health had improved. This latest initiative comes off the back of the hugely successful ‘Call For the Ball’ project which ran in January as we came to terms with the third national lockdown. We delivered 500 free balls to children living in Cambridge City who did not currently own one and invited many of these same children to come to the Activate sessions off the back of this. ■

HERE FOR U’S ———— in the First Lockdown ———— Going back to March 2020, we recognised the immediate challenges that the lockdown would bring. These were unprecedented times and the club wanted to do everything it could to play its part in helping the community through this. The Here for U’s response work was all about providing the people who needed it with practical, emotional and physical support.
PRACTICAL
We opened up a Community Careline for over 70’s to ring up asking for help with their everyday needs – from picking up prescriptions to shopping or having a friendly chat. With firstteam Head Coach taking the very first shift on the Careline, in the following 3 months – we regularly delivered shopping & medication to over 50 individuals and signposted many others to Mutual Aid Groups across the city. Collaborating with our catering team at the club, the city council & Cambridge Sustainable Food we cooked and delivered 1,717 meals over the following months. All those receiving meals were signposted by the city council as being at risk of food poverty. As one parent said: “the meals
and activity packs you deliver are an absolute lifesaver.”
EMOTIONAL
All 12 of the staff on the Community Careline (included the head coach) had previously been qualified as Mental Health first aiders trained by the club. The club board, first-team players & staff ensured all season ticket holders over the age of 64 were contacted within the next two weeks whilst Trust staff held wellbeing calls with 100+ of elderly participants from our seniors’ programmes including Walking Football, Dementia Sports Café, Seniors Lunches.
PHYSICAL
Replacing our in-person weekly Virtual Community Bootcamp with an online version, we recognised that there was also a need to engage younger families. Delivering 82 family fitness fun sessions on weekday mornings & 18 Community Bootcamps, one evening a week: the sessions were viewed over 100,000 times. We also delivered 305 education activity packs in the first lockdown to families attempting home education for the first time. ■

MEMORIES DOWN ———— CUT THROAT LANE ———— Welcome back to the Abbey for our penultimate home game of the season. And greetings to our visitors from Broadhall Way and indeed one of our old boys who it seems has turned things around. Let’s hope they will just roll over today! Just drawing breath after Tuesday evening’s events and what was our twelfth away league win of the season. Who would bet against a lucky thirteen before we (hopefully) lift the title, deservedly in my book.

tuition job for many years at the Leicestershire FA. So, our rivals snaffled four points off us that season having won 2-1 at London Road in the November, but they were faced with another season in what was then Division 3. Arguments rage about this but in an ideal world for me our closest rivals would be in the same division as us every season. In other news incidentally, on this day in 1888 George Eastman founded the Eastman Kodak Company in New York. Say CHEESE! Just look up, never down. Since 1912 - United in Endeavour! Bye for now. ■

I mentioned in the last programme about our run-in back in the 1998/99 season and that we still had rivals Posh to play during the month of April. This fixture and that day’s programme, which you can read here today, is our focus as we wander back down Cut Throat Lane. A win that day may well have secured promotion but it wasn’t meant to be in a tense, tight, typically robust Cambs derby and honours were shared in a 1-1 draw in front of 8,307. The visitors took the lead on the 7th minute through Giuliano Grazioli, but King of the Abbey Paul Wanless equalised 19 minutes later. Halfway through the second half Posh skipper Andy Edwards was sent off for taking out Alex Russell and you can imagine the final quarter of the game was rather like the Alamo at the Corona End but to no avail for the home side. The ref that day was a certain Paul “dirty” Danson - remember him? He was from Leicester, we knew that in those days before referees’ place of abode were no longer published. Anyway, he has retired after doing a referee CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V STEVENAGE FC

Around the Division ———— LEAGUE TWO ROUND-UP ———— OWEN MIZON TAKES HIS LATEST LOOK ACROSS LEAGUE TWO As we embark on the tail end of a season like no other, who will write themselves in folklore and produce pandemonium for their clubs? As ever, let’s digest the trials and tribulations of Sky Bet League Two. League leaders Cambridge United are on the cusp of promotion after securing an invaluable 2-4 win against Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road. A brace from Joe Ironside, as well as strikes from Paul Mullin and Shilow Tracey, ensured that Mark Bonner’s side will be celebrating a return to the third tier of English football for the first time since 2002 should they record victory today. Despite losing just twice in their last 11, the O’s play-off hopes are now faint. Jobi McAnuff’s men are 10th and four points from the top seven. An exquisite George Lloyd finish helped Cheltenham Town narrowly edge out Stevenage 0-1 at the Lamex Stadium to keep their title aspirations on track. The Robins sit in 2nd and have a three-point cushion from 4th with a crucial game in hand. Where today’s opponents are concerned, they’ve recorded three consecutive defeats and slip to 16th, but will no doubt be adamant to return to winning ways and spoil United’s party this afternoon. Bolton Wanderers also boasted their promotion credentials and remain in the final automatic promotion spot after overcoming Carlisle United 1-0 thanks to Eoin Doyle’s 18th goal of the season. Now winless in four, the Cumbrians’ playoff possibilities have crumbled. They’ve fell to 11th and need to make up five points from their final four. Hot on the Trotters’ heels are Morecambe, who are a place and point behind in 4th after recording a comprehensive 0-3 win over basement side Grimsby Town. Quickfire strikes from Cole Stockton and Yann Songo’o put the Shrimps in the driving seat, before a late Luke Waterfall own goal sealed the points. It sets the stage for a season-defining 90 minutes at the
Globe Arena today, where Derek Adams’ men do battle with Ian Evatt’s Bolton in the hunt for 3rd. Contrasting emotions for the Mariners, who are nine points adrift and face the most mammoth of tasks. A return to the National League looms. Tranmere Rovers ended their run of seven matches without a win by gaining a significant 0-1 success over Bradford City at Valley Parade. A Paudie O’Connor own goal on the stroke of half time was enough to keep Rovers in 5th, four points behind 3rd. Three defeats on the bounce for the Bantams has all but ended their outside play-off hopes, they’re now situated in 13th. Play-off rivals Forest Green Rovers and Exeter City shared the spoils in a battling stalemate at the New Lawn. After enjoying formidable starts to the campaign, both sides have seemed to lost the spark with inconsistency hitting at the wrong time. The hosts are congregated in 6th after winning just the solitary game in eight, whereas the Grecians have won two in ten and have ground to make up in 8th. Newport County occupy the final play-off spot after they saw off ten-man Crawley Town 2-0 at Rodney Parade, their first win in four. Liam Shephard drew first blood for the Exiles on 52, before Aaron Lewis made sure of the points in the 100th minute. Despite leaving South Wales empty-handed, the Red Devils are a satisfactory 12th. Goals in each half from Ian Henderson and Jordan Turnbull helped maintain Salford City’s top seven pursuit as they claimed a 0-2 win at Walsall. Allocated in 9th, the Ammies will require a winning run in their remaining four games if they want to claw back the current three-point gap. Safety is now secured for Brian Dutton’s side, who are a lowly 19th. Port Vale are the form side in the division after a Tom Conlon brace helped breeze the Valiants to a 0-2 win against Barrow. The only club in the top four divisions to have beaten all 91 fellow teams, CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V STEVENAGE FC
31 Darrell Clarke’s side have picked up maximum points in seven of their last eight and march up to 14th. The task is simple for the Bluebirds, they’re in 22nd and need one win in their last four to ensure EFL safety in their first campaign back. The division’s leading marksmen Oldham Athletic made it 70 for the campaign with a resounding 0-3 win at Harrogate Town. Alfie McCalmont, Dylan Bahamboula and George Blackwood all appeared on the scoresheet for the Latics, who leapfrogged the Sulphurites and moved to 15th. In spite of one win from their last nine, avoiding the drop was always the sole aim for Simon Weaver’s side, who are 17th. Just below the Sulphurites are Mansfield Town who, to a man, put in an exceptional performance at the One Call Stadium as they swept past Scunthorpe United 3-0 to stretch their unbeaten run to four games. George Lapslie gave the
Stags the advantage going into half time before a dominant second half was topped off by two goals in three minutes from James Perch and Tyrese Sinclair. The result compiled further misery on the Iron, who are winless in six and slump to 20th. Colchester United earned the bragging rights of Essex and took a pivotal step towards safety after pushing rivals Southend United closer to relegation during a 2-0 win. First half strikes from Michael Folivi and Harry Pell was enough to separate the sides and secure consecutive wins for the first time since early December. Sitting in 21st, the job is all but achieved for the U’s now. For the Shrimpers, who had Jason Demetriou sent off, it’s the polar opposite. Languishing in 23rd, they simply have to win three in a row to stand any chance of the great escape, something they haven’t done since October 2018. ■

Hot———— offAndrewthe Habbin Stephen ———— FOOTBALL IS THE BALLET OF THE MASSES DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH
Odd as it may seem, our deadly rivals St. Evenage have a lot in common with us. We depend on the continued existence of real, and fair, competition and the endless opportunities to win. Equally, both clubs are motivated by the constant jeopardy of a disastrous relegation which is the other side of the same coin. Like us, they respect their roots and their community. They treat their fans with respect, unlike noisy neighbours Spurs. The Big Six are united only in their willingness to treat their fans and the traditions they cherish with utter contempt. I won’t attempt to explain what football means to genuine fans. Sir Bobby Robson has already done that better than anyone else ever could. Rivals we may be but the grubby Super League proposal is a timely reminder of everything that ‘ordinary’ football clubs have in common. Whenever inadequate and egocentric owners wreak havoc on clubs like Bury, Darlington, Blackpool, Coventry and all the others, we feel a sense of solidarity with all those other fans who have been deprived, however temporarily, of their right to dream. The Big Six don’t care if Clubs like ours go to the wall as long as their own wallets grow fatter. On Tuesday a group of Cambridge fans rented a flat at Orient’s ground so that they could cheer on the U’s to victory. Mark Bonner, classy as always, went over to them at the end of the game to thank them for their passionate and boisterous support. He knows, as we all do, that our chosen clubs are a vital part of our lives, successful or not. This season has been wonderful for Cambridge fans, whatever happens during our last three www.cambridge-united.co.uk
games. During the awful year or so of the pandemic, our team’s performances have been a ray of sunlight in almost unrelieved gloom. Any club owner who is happy to take that joy away from anyone doesn’t deserve to be the custodian of a football club at any level. I would love to see the authorities strip them of that right. Some years ago, after an away game at Stevenage, I was standing in the Gents next to a Stevenage fan. He asked me what I thought about the game. I had been in the Supporters’ Club for some time and may have taken a glass, if not two. I launched into a diatribe about how that cheat Adam Miller had dived to get a penalty. Of course the Stevenage fan turned out to be Adam’s father. He laughed and we agreed that it had been a good game really. Later Adam Miller saw sense and came to play for us. I hope we win on Saturday. I think that 3 points would take us up but, in our league, all results are possible. Time to reclaim the peoples’ game and to make it fairer for us all. ■

HELPING FAMILIES ENJOY FOOTBALL AT HOME The ‘homemade waste pipe goal’. Waste pipes, push-fit knuckle bends and some barrier fencing. It doesn’t seem like much, but sometimes it’s all you need to transform your garden into a proper footy pitch.

Everyone loses when you step on the track
Cambridge United want our fans, families and friends to stay safe, so we are supporting the You Vs Train campaign. We are sharing the message that young people need to stay off the tracks. 8 young people have died in the last two years after trespassing on the railway. PLEASE don’t be next. Visit youvstrain.co.uk for more information and help us keep our fans safe.

EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION
Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.
COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)
The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.
Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.
