H.O.P.E Center
In response to the insights gathered from Campus, Community, and Student Conversations, our architecture project at UDM is dedicated to transforming the campus into a vibrant, inclusive, and engaging environment. The overarching themes highlight the need to foster a welcoming atmosphere and enhance community engagement through shared amenities. Key suggestions focus on addressing concerns about the campus’ relationship with the surrounding neighborhood and improving food options both on and off-campus. Students have expressed a strong desire for a more dynamic campus life, citing the current lack of activities and spaces conducive to socializing and studying. To meet these needs, we propose solutions such as revamping the campus image, increasing event programming, and providing 24-hour study areas. Additionally, there is a significant call for closer integration between students and the local community, emphasizing the creation of spaces for interaction and collaboration. Our efforts to address these concerns include reevaluating the campus fence situation to enhance connectivity, facilitating community events to foster a sense of unity, and improving campus facilities to promote a sense of belonging and encourage student involvement. Through these initiatives, we aim to create a campus environment that not only meets the practical needs of students but also inspires a vibrant, interconnected, and supportive community.

TIMBRICA
Innovative Timber Construction
Cornucopia presents a visionary concept for a cutting-edge business incubator situated in the heart of the Eastern Market region. This innovative hub is dedicated to fostering the growth of emerging companies, nurturing partnerships, and supporting groundbreaking innovations.
Envisioned as a 48,000-square-foot structure towering 65 feet high, Cornucopia is designed to be a beacon of progress in Detroit.
At its core, Cornucopia aims to cultivate a vibrant sense of community and connectivity, both within its walls and throughout the neighborhood. Positioned strategically, the building establishes a direct link with the Dequindre Cut Greenway, fostering a seamless integration with the surrounding environment. With an emphasis on user experience, the design prioritizes maximum visibility and natural daylight within working areas, offering occupants panoramic views of the Detroit skyline and the Dequindre Cut. This intentional layout not only promotes wellness and productivity but also stimulates social interactions and collaboration among members.

Site Context

The site’s strategic location in a busy local business district ensures a high volume of foot traffic, amplified by the proximity to Eastern Market. The nearby pedestrian and vehicular pathways, particularly the Dequindre Cut, offer significant opportunities. The slope on our site presents possiblilities for unique experiences, such as rainwater collection. However, challenges include the empty atmosphere caused by surrounding vacant lots and the presence of abandoned buildings.

OASIS DETROIT
Community Center | Campus
The Oasis of Detroit is a purpose-built facility dedicated to the non-profit organization Greening of Detroit. This organization is committed to enhancing the urban landscape of Detroit by planting trees and transforming vacant spaces into vibrant green areas for the community. The Oasis of Detroit serves as a central hub for these efforts, offering freeof-charge office spaces, training facilities, a greenhouse, and an open community garden.
Within the Greening of Detroit facility, you’ll find not only offices and training spaces but also a fully equipped greenhouse and an inviting community garden. Additionally, the organization operates tree farms and smaller greenhouse areas that produce various products. These products may find their way to the on-campus fruit market or be transported to other locations in Detroit, contributing to the broader mission of fostering a greener and more sustainable urban environment.
