Namibia 2018

In June 2018 a handful of friends -- above, Dan Claasen, Chantal Mariotte, Cristina Croze-Boelcke, and I -- headed south from our Kenyan homes to the southern tip of Africa. Regrouping in the last days of May at the house of another friend, Monika MacDevette, we then motored 4,000 km northwards then eastwards to visit the wonders of the Namib desert and the other splendid and varied landscapes along the way. Herewith a photo record of our journey.

The bizarre Welwitschia mirabilis, labelled in 1863 by Joseph Hooker, Director of the Kew Royal Botanic Gardens as “the most wonderful plant every brought to [England], and the very ugliest,” is thought to live for hundreds of years. It is the only species in its unique family. Despite its cone-like reproductive parts, it is not related to conifers, but distantly to flowering angiosperms. Each plant grows just two everlengthening leaves that fray into ribbons, their tips withering under wind-blown sand and searing desert sun. Some plants weigh up to 100 kg, with turnip-like stems, taproots reaching 20 metres deep, and leaf pores that seal tight during blistering daylight hours.s.
