A word about the Compiler Harvey Croze was born the son of a poor but talented photographer, Harvey Croze, three score years and ten ago, the passing of which time has mercifully marked the end of the era of naming people Harvey Croze. Having graduated Cum Laude from Amherst College in 1960 and earning a D.Phil. from Oxford University in 1968. he moved with his young family to East Africa, answering the call to, etc, etc‌ so on and so forth‌.

Foreword It was Dan Claasen (a.k.a. The Capybara — hence the mammalian but otherwise irrelevant cover image — who one day over lunch, staring balefully into my lens, observed that most of the photos I take in Nairobi or on safari in Kenya or traveling overseas catch us eating and drinking or drinking or eating: at our house, at friends' homes, in restaurants or hotels, on Lago Maggiori or Lake Ellis. Looking at the plate, looking at the camera, fork in mid-stab, glass in mid-quaff: you'd think we did little else home or abroad. Perhaps that's true. And why not? At a certain time in life, when bouts of bungy jumping and all-night bonks come with lessened frequency, we do look forward to a cool, crisp Sauvignon Blanc followed by a light but nourishing lunch. Indeed, humankind has a deep history of sharing food, breaking marrowbone, later bread, with friends and neighbours to reinforce respect and foster fidelity. Thus the servicing of our alimentary canals and stimulating of our brains' appetite centres would seem to be a suitable thread to run through a scrapbook of our friendships. Talking of threads, the collection could have been called Tippling With Tony, Quaffing With Kaveh, Wining With Weber, Feeding With Veerle, Munching With Monika or Melanie or Moshe, Something With Cynthia, Sandy or the Shrettas, etc… you get the idea. But, since Dan suggested it (as he has to me so many wonderful but largely ignored book ideas), and since he appears Zelig-like in nearly everyone of my photos over the years, this slim volume of ingesting and imbibing images is dedicated to him, by chance in this his 70th year. So, cheers, old fruit, here's to you and all the mates with whom we raise a glass and break bread.

A Technical Note and An Invitation to Participate This landmark production introduces for the first time ever in a hardcover book the innovative, fully-interactive, analog-input conceit of Participatory Captioning. You, the Reader, are invited to participate in the PCing option by perusing the images and if you happen to remember pertinent details of who, what, where and when — many, if not most of which have slipped the otherwise razor-sharp mind of the Compiler — take an analog data input module in hand and actually enter the facts in the appropriate spaces in the last page of each year-based book section. An example is given on page 12 for the images in the first time block section, 1991-95. The Compiler regrets that he thereafter grew lazy and for the remaining sections only provided captions for the section cover photos. We can fill in the blanks in those idle hours after we retire.
Photo Selection The choice of images for this ground-breaking one-off volume has been based on the SHOEBOX algorithm, or the System for Hierarchal and Orderly Elimination of Boring Old eXtras. The baseline collection of 7,435,212 images was winnowed down initially to 12, mainly comprising the firm-jawed profile of the Compiler, a collection, which, though stunning in itself, arguably did not warrant a whole 100-page book. The SHOEBOX filters were reset and run again to focus on group feeding (or drinking), or social grouping either shortly before or after feeding (or drinking). Those remaining 4,378,212 images were manually inspected for quality and representativeness, and the resultant 549 images form the substance of this seminal work of peerless design and stunning beauty. A handful of wildcard images have been inserted, usually because they happen to be of really good looking women, fast cars, airplanes, or the Compiler.
