Dear Fellow Members,
Happy Spring! This year the culmination of traditional springtime religious observances is spread out over the next month. May your season of celebrations be filled with the meaning that is intended for you and your families.
With spring upon us, voting for the Harvard Board of Overseers and Harvard Alumni Association elected directors begins April 1. The HCB is fortunate to have two candidates standing for election, Courtney B. Vance ‘82 is a candidate for Overseer and Daniel Ahn ’90, M.B.A. ’97 is a candidate for HAA elected director. In January, the Harvard Alumni Association Nominating Committee released its slate of candidates for the spring 2025 elections of new members to the Harvard Board of Overseers and elected directors of the Harvard Alumni Association. The voting website will be available through 5:00 PM (EDT) on May 14, 2025.
March featured several events that covered a variety of interests. Many thanks to our Member Experience team for their diligent efforts to provide enjoyable opportunities for our members to engage in fellowship, knowledge and fun. Two event highlights of March were A Legacy On Ice event that featured six Harvard alumni who were World and Olympic Champions who shared their professional and personal success journeys. Many thanks to Dr. Elizabeth Micci, Ed.L.D. ’18, a member of our Board of Governors for suggesting and organizing this wonderful event. The other wonderful event was Waves and Wines: A Taste of Tour of Island Wines. Kudos to Brett Vankowski ’98, President of Harvard Alumni Wine & Food SIG, and our Executive Chef Dean Moore for their collaboration in offering this tasty and thirst-quenching event.
With the arrival of April there is a noticeable uptick in clubhouse and off-site events along with University focused activity. The Red Sox Home Opener is on Friday, April 4. Enjoy a day out at Fenway Park and cheer on the Sox with fellow members. April 15 is One Boston Day, the City of Boston invites community-based organizations, businesses, City of Boston residents to come together for volunteer events and acts of kindness in recognition of our city’s spirit of care for one another in response to the tragic events of April 15, 2013. Monday, April 21 is the 129th running of the Boston Marathon, a true annual rite of spring in Boston! Come by the clubhouse to cheer on your favorite runner and enjoy the day. Good luck to all our runners. Tuesday, April 22 is the 55th commemoration of Earth Day. This year’s theme is “Our Power, Our Planet”. I encourage you to take part in the Earth Day Celebration taking place on Science Center Plaza at Harvard.
Work on our Family Room is moving along nicely and will be opening in our lower level next to the Lactation Room later in April. This space will support our plans for enhanced children’s programming and babysitting in the future. The pace of progress on our new outdoor patio space has increased now that the weather has improved. There are exciting plans for the décor and amenities in this new member space. If the weather continues to cooperate, we hope to open this exciting new social area in late May/early June. Many thanks to Glen Ballard, our Director of Facilities, and his team for their work on both projects.
Our 117th Annual Meeting will be held on Monday, May 5 at 5:30 PM. Eligible members may vote for the slate of Board of Governor Officer and Director nominees through proxy ballots starting on Monday, April 14. Many thanks to our Nominating Committee for their due diligence in creating this year’s slate of club leaders. At 6:00 PM our Harvard Celebration of Spring begins. Following cocktails and dinner, this year will feature a conversation with Jeremy Weinstein, M.A. ’01, Ph.D. ’03, the Dean of Faculty, Harvard Kennedy School Don K. Price Professor of Public Policy, HKS, Professor of Government, FAS. Dean Weinstein will be in conversation with Bithiah Carter exu ’03, a member of our Board of Governors. This will be an opportunity to hear about current and future plans for the Kennedy School of Government. Given the many perspectives domestically and internationally, we are fortunate to the Dean share his thoughts with us.
This month you will see the Higginson 1908 Foundation Voluntary Assessment on your statement. The work of the Foundation provides the means in our efforts to support educational programming, preserve and protect clubhouse artwork, and advance the interests and promote the welfare of Harvard University. Over the past year through your generosity, the Foundation has supported Harvard University’s Rising Scholars, and Harvard Prize Book programs. We added artwork in the renovated Veritas Lounge and Member Commons, and there’s more to come for Harvard Hall. We also upgraded the lighting for the art pieces that are displayed leading up to our second floor. The Foundation will support our upcoming work by updating the catalogue of our artwork and other artifacts. Thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity.
Spring is the time of year that reminds us of the anticipation of Class Day on Wednesday, May 28 and Harvard’s 374th Commencement on Thursday, May 29. We here at the HCB look forward to this time of year as we focus on welcoming new alumni into our Club community and connecting with friends and classmates. It’s a time when we look to strengthen our connection to fellow alums through reunions and Alumni Day on Friday, June 6. We are connected through our lifelong love of learning which is fostered through our engagement with Harvard.
Many thanks to all of you for choosing to be members of our beloved Club. As a member of the greatest alumni network in the world, thank you for filling our Club with a spirit of unity and congeniality, respect and kindness. Your loyalty and support make us thrive as a community, onward together. If you have questions or suggestions, please contact me directly at president@harvardclub.com.
Best regards,
Marcus O. P. DeFlorimonte gb ’95, pmd President, Harvard Club of Boston

Dear Harvard Club of Boston Membership:
The Club always has a fervor simmering once Spring rolls into town. The clubhouse comes alive with more members showing up before heading to Fenway Park to see the Red Sox play and the anticipated excitement of Marathon Monday makes the Back Bay neighborhood feel more vibrant. Each month we strive to enhance your member experience and improve Club operations.
Recently, we have expanded our offering in Veritas to include a full dinner menu every Monday and made the Little Scholars kids’ menu available in ClubPub. We consider the clubhouse a home and we are making an intentional effort to include amenities and services for families and children. Last year, we introduced the Lactation Room on the Lower Level for new parents and in the coming weeks we will be opening a Family Activity Room located next to it. We are excited to meet the next generation of members and enjoy having your family in our community.
For those of you who have entered the Club from the front entrance, you have noticed construction taking place on the left-hand side. Over the next couple of months that area will begin to transform as the clubhouse will expand to include a new outdoor patio for dining and casual social hangouts. We are thrilled to create this amazing new experience that will certainly be a member favorite not only in the summer months, but year-round!
As stewards of Harvard, we have made a commitment to improve Member Commons by adding scenic photos of campus, Harvard themed chairs in the Lounge, and additional soundproof privacy booths in the Workspace. We also extended the reservation time of the Member Conference Room to two hours. More updates will be coming to your member only space in the future.
Your feedback is invaluable to us. We are always striving to improve your membership value and ensure your experience at the Club is nothing short of exceptional. Please feel free to reach out with any suggestions or comments you may have. Please feel free to contact me directly at scummings@harvardclub.com or (617) 450-8400 if I can be of service to you!
Thank you for being a vital part of our community. All of us at the Harvard Club of Boston look forward to seeing you inside the clubhouse or at our next event!
Sincerely,
Steven P. Cummings, CCM, CCE General Manager
March was an incredible month for members at the Harvard Club of Boston, packed with exciting events and unforgettable experiences. Members enjoyed a special excursion back to campus to cheer on Harvard Men's Basketball against Yale, followed by an exquisite wine tasting that delighted the senses. A wonderful intellectual conversation was sparked about a lifetime of lessons from smart women with a captivating presentation by John Spooner ’59, while team trivia in the pub brought out friendly competition. The Business Leaders SIG Happy Hour provided a fantastic networking opportunity, and an immersive Mardi Gras Mixology added a festive flair. The month wrapped up with a celebration of Harvard alumni and world-class figure skaters, making March truly one to remember!
If you’re attending a future event, be sure to take pictures of yourself, your friends and fellow members. Post them on your socials and tag us and set your location to Harvard Club of Boston!

APRIL 11TH | 8:00AM–9:00AM | VIRTUAL
In a sweeping analysis full of historical insight, Growth by Daniel Susskind shows how policymaking came to revolve around a single-minded quest for greater GDP. This is a surprisingly recent development: economic growth was barely discussed until the second half of the twentieth century. And our understanding of what drives it is more recent still. Only lately have we come to see how humankind emerged from its millennia of stagnation: through the sustained discovery of powerful and productive new ideas.
This insight undermines the mantra that “we cannot have infinite growth on a finite planet,” for the world of ideas is infinitely vast. Yet growth’s critics are right to insist that we can no longer focus on its upsides alone. We must confront the tradeoffs, Susskind contends: sometimes, societies will have to deliberately pursue less growth for the sake of other goals. These will be moral decisions, not simply economic ones, demanding the engagement not just of politicians and experts but of all citizens.
