President's Letter General Manager's Letter

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Dear Fellow Members,

Spring in New England has arrived, the weather is a consistent mystery. Here at the HCB, the weather forecast is sunny with comfortable temperatures. The Red Sox are back at Fenway Park the Celtics are again in the playoffs. We have the following to enjoy this month and early June - Harvard Arts Festival (5/1-5/4) Radcliffe Day (5/9), Mother’s Day Brunch (5/11), Class Day (5/28), Commencement (5/29), 152nd MIT Commencement (5/30), Alumni Day (6/6), and reunions are around the corner. This a time of year when we look to cultivate and strengthen our connection with fellow alums through club events and on campus activities. We are connected through our lifelong love of learning which is fostered through our intergenerational engagement with Harvard on all levels. Please be sure to check our app or website along with the University website for a full listing of upcoming events.

There are two projects that will come to fruition this month that have been part of a 25-year odyssey and very important to improving our member experience. The opening of our Family Activities Room and our new outdoor dining location “The Patio at Veritas”. Those of us who have been involved in Club leadership both past and present are very pleased to see these become reality. Please note that along with the new room for family activities, plans for babysitting services are being finalized and our plan is to begin that service this summer. Bravo to Valerie Phillips, Jackie Deschamps and Board of Governor, Jillian McGrath for their work on the Family Activities Room and to Steve Cummings, Becky Blaeser, Jackie Deschamps, Roger Schofield and House Committee member, John Meyer for their work on the outdoor dining. Beginning on May 18, brunch service will return to Veritas on Sundays. This is a great addition to our dining services, this along with our new patio will make the HCB the place to be on Sundays. Special thanks to Facilities Director, Glen Ballard and his team on both projects.

May at the Harvard Club of Boston is an exciting and pivotal time in our community. Each year the convocation of the next generation of Harvard influencers is our opportunity to welcome fresh faces, diverse personalities, and new voices into our Club. As has become our custom for the past number of years, the graduates from the College and Graduate Schools receive a one-year complimentary membership to the HCB. Let’s embrace these new members. A year from now they will make the decision of whether to continue their membership or choose a different path in life. We should all commit ourselves to making the choice easy for them to remain with us. Let’s welcome them and give them a sense that they belong in HCB community. Their commitment is an integral part to future growth and success of the Club.

To the Class of 2025, I invite you to be active members and tell you that you belong here. We want you to feel excited not only to attend events but feel confident that your participation in all our activities is necessary for our incredible Club to thrive. Additionally, I have a message for the Class of 2024 who are finishing up their first year with us. Stay and grow with us. The energy you have brought to the community has been fantastic and we want to see for years to come. Take full advantage of the diverse programming, intergenerational connections and experiences we offer. Stay engaged and participate in Club activities. You all matter and we are stronger because of you!

With spring upon us, voting for the Harvard Board of Overseers and Harvard Alumni Association elected Directors has begun. The HCB is fortunate to have two candidates standing for election, Courtney B. Vance ‘82 is a candidate for Overseer and Daniel Ahn ’90, M.B.A. ’97 is a candidate for HAA elected Director. In January, the Harvard Alumni Association Nominating Committee released its slate of candidates for the spring 2025 elections of new members to the Harvard Board of Overseers and elected Directors of the Harvard Alumni Association. The voting website will be available through 5:00 PM (EDT) on May 14, 2025. Please remember to vote. This is an important part of Harvard University’s governing process.

At our Annual Meeting on May 5, we will recognize our Board of Governor members whose terms of service have ended and ratify our new Club Leadership team. Many thanks to Anthony Consigli ’89, Courtney Jacobvits gsd’ 16, MIT ’22 and Charles Cornish, legacy for their service and contributions to our Harvard community. Congratulations to Susan Kendall ’81, ks ‘99, on her nomination to become our next President of the HCB, to Andy Freed ’90, ks ’94 on his nomination to serve as a Vice President along with Cristina Blau ’87, Cheryl LaMonica ‘gb 21 gmp, Ameek Ponda ’89, l ’92, Chibuikem Uche ’24 to serve on the Board of Governors. May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month

This annual month-long event is an opportunity to celebrate the many contributions and achievements of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. We encourage you to celebrate their wonderful culture by participating in activities around Boston and Harvard during the month.

This is my final HCB Bulletin President’s letter, number 37, not that I’m counting. It’s been a true honor and privilege to serve as your President over the past three years. It’s been a pivotal three years in our Club history, and we have accomplished a lot together. First, many thanks to my colleagues that I have served with on the Board of Governors. Their wise counsel

and dedication during my presidency have been paramount to our collective accomplishments. A special heartfelt thank you to the Executive Committee – Susan Kendall, Jillian McGrath, Michael Cronin, David Rodriguez and Juan Carmona along with Andy Freed and Secretary Emeritus, Mat Sibble for their wonderful support during my presidency, especially the past six months. Without your assistance and encouragement, none of the success that has happened over the past three years would have been possible, along with our General Manager Steve Cummings and the management team. I met Steve on his first day at the HCB 14 years ago and the rest as they say is history. Steve will always say it takes a team, well a team needs a manager, and Steve has done an admiral job as General Manager. Steve and his team have been an integral part of making our achievements attainable.

Over the past three years, the collective efforts of Club leadership, management and members have achieved many things. Below are some of the many notable triumphs:

• Focusing our efforts on becoming the best alumni Club in the world and being the flagship Club within the Harvard alumni network

• An increased presence at Harvard events on campus and the hosting of Harvard events at our clubhouse

• Invested in increasing number, variety and quality of our member events

• Enhanced the strength and number of Harvard University partnerships

• Invested in significant improvements to our Member Commons

• Repaired our roof and reconstructed the clubhouse sub-basement

• Renovated the Veritas Lounge

• Installed a Lactation Room and Family Activities Room

• Established a reciprocal arrangement with the Harvard Club of New York

• Invested in many pieces of artwork that connect us to the University and represent today’s Harvard

• Implemented our mobile access system

• Terminated our pension plan

These accomplishments happened because of the creativity, planning, execution and participation of our Club Leadership, management, committees and members. Together we built a foundation of an alumni club that strives to be an intergenerational place of lifelong learning in the spirit of fun, fellowship and Veritas.

A heartfelt thank you to Past Presidents Frank Meade, Glenn Johnson, W. Shaw McDermott, Jim Anderson, Phil Haughey Sr., Nick Iselin, Mike Shanahan and Karen Van Winkle for the kindness and support you each have individually extended to me.

I would be remiss if I did not express some personal words of appreciation and gratitude to people that have been part of service here at the HCB. Many, many thanks to Cheryl Moderski and Valerie Phillips who have been part of the HCB for 43 and 35 years respectively for always being there to ensure that I had all the information to make the correct decision. Cheryl and Valerie are a wealth of knowledge and as the say goes “if Cheryl and Valerie don’t remember, it didn’t happen.” Glen Ballard and his facilities team who made things happen no matter how challenging the task I bestowed upon them. Kudos to our esteemed Member Experience team - Becky Blaeser, Cheryl Moderski, Jackie Deschamps, Carolyn Longden, Dan Farmer, Darius Howell, Katerina Riley and Abby Dean. This team is the face of the HCB and has influenced the direction and done tremendous work in improving the member experience. They have supported me and my ideas, always looking for ways to do what we do better. Thanks to Sara LaWare and her team for bringing our financial and information systems into the 21st century. Thank you

to Dean Moore, Criag Snee and Jennifer Sepulveda and your respective teams for making my personal and professional events wonderful experiences for my guests. Thanks to Genene, Joe, Tess, Youseff and Victor, you provide the most welcoming experience and enjoyable when parking my car. Thank you to Lisa Armetta and Tiziana Lynch for your support of me and the committee, when I chaired the Assisting Club Employee Fund. Your dedicated efforts made the difference for HCB staff during an extremely difficult time. Thanks to Anthony, Roberto and Melissa at the front desk for storing and reminding me about items that always seem to be there. Last and certainly not least, thank you Steve Cummings for being who you are.

Many thanks to all of you for choosing to be members of our beloved Club. As a member of the greatest alumni network in the world, thank you for filling our Club with a spirit of unity and congeniality, respect and kindness. Your loyalty and support make us thrive as a community, onward together. To quote Senator Edward M. Kennedy “The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and dreams shall never die.”

Best regards, with gratitude and much appreciation,

Marcus O. P. DeFlorimonte gb ’95, pmd President, Harvard Club of Boston

Go Crimson, One Harvard!

Thank You, Marcus!

We are eager to continue the proud tradition of collaboration, striving together to build a more dynamic and connected Harvard network. With every new chapter, we reaffirm our mission to make this Club the global home of Harvard alumni — a place where bonds are strengthened, ideas are shared, and lifelong friendships are formed.

Your feedback is invaluable to us. We are always striving to improve your membership value and ensure your experience at the Club is nothing short of exceptional. Please feel free to reach out with any suggestions or comments you may have at scummings@harvardclub.com or (617) 450-8400. I will be happy to be of service to you!

Thank you for being a vital part of our community. All of us at the Harvard Club of Boston look forward to seeing you inside the clubhouse or at our next event!

Sincerely,

| HARVARD HALL

In collaboration with the Harvard Business School Association of Boston, the Harvard Club of Boston welcomes Peter H. Schmidt and John Williams as they explore Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), NASA’s term for the air transportation system of the future. Six technology areas are key to AAM: High Speed VTOL (Vertical Takeoff and Landing), Hydrogen Aircraft, Electric Aircraft, eVTOLs (electric), Autonomous Flight, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel. Come and learn more about the technological advancements and limitations, regulatory challenges, and market dynamics that are shaping this future.

Join us to understand how AAM is poised to upend travel norms, as well as military ops, by offering safe, sustainable, efficient, and speedy aerial transportation alternatives.

APRIL 11TH | 8:00AM–9:00AM | VIRTUAL

Blind Spots by Johns Hopkins medical expert Dr. Marty Makary, the New York Times-bestselling author of The Price We Pay-an eye-opening look at the medical group think that has led to public harm, and what you need to know about your health.

More Americans have peanut allergies today than at any point in history. Why? Dr. Makary asks, Could it be that many modernday health crises have been caused by the hubris of the medical establishment? Experts said for decades that opioids were not addictive, igniting the opioid crisis. They refused menopausal women hormone replacement therapy, causing unnecessary suffering. They demonized natural fat in foods, driving Americans to processed carbohydrates as obesity rates soared. They told citizens that there are no downsides to antibiotics and prescribed them liberally, causing a drug-resistant bacteria crisis.

An Evening with John J. Sullivan U.S. AMBASSADOR TO RUSSIA

MAY 13TH | 6:00PM–8:00PM |

HARVARD HALL

You are invited to participate in an evening with John J. Sullivan, an eminent American attorney and government official whose career spans four decades in the public and private sectors. He has served five presidents in prominent diplomatic and legal positions, including as US Ambassador to the Russian Federation under Presidents Biden (January 2021 to October 2022) and Trump (December 2019 to January 2021). Before his post in Moscow, he served for almost three years as the US Deputy Secretary of State. His years in diplomacy required deep personal sacrifice on the part of his late wife, Grace Rodriguez ’83 (Quincy House), and himself.

Having served as Ambassador to Russia during President Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, Ambassador Sullivan writes enthrallingly in Midnight in Moscow (Little, Brown, 2024) about his US-Russia diplomatic efforts, including in the harrowingly quiet days leading up to the attack and beyond. He meticulously recounts high political intrigue, “hockey diplomacy”, the daily challenges of supporting his staff posted in Moscow, Vladivostok and Yekaterinburg, and the invaluable assistance he provided to American citizens imprisoned by the Russian government.

This is a complimentary event to members and their guests. Registration required. Appetizers and Member Bar will be available. Books are available for purchase. REGISTER HERE

Tracy Kidder spent five years following Dr. O’Connell and his colleagues as they served their thousands of homeless patients. In this book, we travel with O’Connell as he navigates the city, offering medical care, socks, soup, empathy, humor, and friendship to some of the city’s most vulnerable citizens.

Harvard College Rising Scholars Program

Let’s hear from Dr. Katherine Veach, Assistant Dean of First-Year

Programs

Through the support of the Higginson 1908 Foundation, the partnership between the Rising Scholars Program and the Harvard Club of Boston has rounded out the experience of the students in our program in ways that have simply blown me away. We built the program to help students to invest in themselves as we invest in them, and that ethos is made even clearer by the welcoming and generous spirit the Club brings to our program. Playing to our own strengths, the College has been able to create the RSP as a transformative academic and residential program, but the extra dimension the access to the Club provides has taken it to a new level.

The impact of the social capital that Club membership gives to the students cannot be overstated, and it’s simply not something I can do via our campus resources. All in all, we are so grateful for everything the Club has provided; it has made the RSP a better program than it was without it.

Perhaps most importantly, the welcome we’ve received at the Club, either via memberships for students or through special opportunities like the cohort Thanksgiving meal last year, has meant the world to these students. They feel a sense of belonging via the Club’s embrace that is truly at the heart of the program’s goals.

Here are three students who have shared how the HCB has impacted

them:

The Harvard Club of Boston's sheer generosity alone makes me so thankful! From being able to take my parents there, my girlfriend, my girlfriend's family, and even my roommate it has truly been an amazing experience. I was able to meet alumni during events that I hadn't even planned on attending--but happened to be there at the same time, I met politicians, I met entrepreneurs, and I even witnessed first-hand what networking can do by being connected to a potential mentor! All that being said: I would love to continue having a relationship with them and I sincerely hope they understand just how much their actions can have an impact upon people--especially those who come from a similar background like those in the Rising Scholars community.

– Owen Bales ‘28

I truly appreciated being able to go to a club and order food with the stipend provided! It made it possible to be able to attend the club in the first place. Thank you!

– Mercedes López ‘28

The HCB has been one of my favorite experiences during my freshman year. It is truly amazing due to all the events they hold and the exquisite food at the Veritas restaurant. Even though I have been busy with school, I have found some time to go to a couple of their events which have allowed me to meet incredible people. I am so grateful to have the membership and hope that the next RSP cohort can get to experience everything I do thanks to the HCB’s generosity.
