Stay sunny and stay awesome!
Staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining overall health and well-being, especially during the hot summer months where you want to enjoy all the activities and adventures the season has to offer. Proper hydration helps regulate body temperature, keeps joints lubricated, prevents infections, delivers nutrients to cells, and keeps organs functioning properly.
Here are 10 Hydration Tips to ensure you stay healthy and well-hydrated this summer:
Drink Plenty of Water - Aim for at least 8 glasses (64 ounces) of water a day. Increase this amount if you are physically active or spending time outdoors. Carry a reusable water bottle with you and set reminders to drink water regularly.
Infuse your water - Add natural flavors to your water by infusing it with fruits like lemon, lime, berries, or cucumber. This can make drinking water more enjoyable and encourage you to drink more. Try adding a few mint leaves or a slice of ginger for a refreshing twist.
Eat Hydrating Foods - Include water-rich fruits and vegetables in your diet, such as watermelon, cucumbers, oranges, and strawberries. Enjoy smoothies, soups, and salads which also contribute to your daily hydration needs.
Limit Dehydrating Drinks - Reduce intake of caffeine and alcohol as they can lead to dehydration. Opt for water, herbal teas, and natural fruit juices instead.
Monitor Hydration Levels: Pay attention to signs of dehydration like dark urine, dry mouth, fatigue, and dizziness. Drink water immediately if you notice any of these symptoms.
Set a Hydration Schedule - Establish a routine to ensure you drink water throughout the day. For example, drink a glass of
water when you wake up, before meals, and before going to bed. Use a hydration app or set reminders on your phone to help you keep track of your water intake.
Use Electrolyte Drinks - During intense physical activity or prolonged exposure to heat, consider drinking beverages that contain electrolytes to replenish the salts and minerals lost through sweat. Choose low-sugar options or make your own electrolyte drink at home with water, a pinch of Himalayan salt, and a splash of fruit juice.
Hydrate Before and After Exercise - Drink water before, during, and after exercise to stay hydrated. If exercising for more than an hour, consider an electrolyte drink. Weigh yourself before and after exercise to understand how much fluid you need to replace.
Make Hydration Fun - Turn hydration into a fun activity by setting goals or challenges with friends or family. See who can drink the most water each day or create a fun water-drinking game. Use colorful and fun water bottles or drinking glasses to make hydration more enjoyable.
Stay Cool - Avoid excessive heat and direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day. Seek shade and wear lightweight, breathable clothing to reduce the risk of dehydration. Use fans or air conditioning to stay cool indoors.
Your skin is the largest organ of your body and acts as a protective barrier against environmental elements. Healthy skin is better able to perform its functions, such as protecting against infections and maintaining proper hydration levels. Protecting your skin, especially during the summer months, is crucial to not only preserve its health and appearance but also to reduce the risk of serious conditions like skin cancer. Sun protection helps keep your skin in good condition, allowing it to heal and renew itself effectively.
Enjoy the summer safely by taking these steps to keep your skin protected.
Use Sunscreen - Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going outside and reapply every 2 hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating.
2
Wear Protective Clothing - Opt for long-sleeved shirts, widebrimmed hats, and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes from UV rays. Choose clothing made from tightly woven fabrics that offer better sun protection.

Stay Informed - Check the UV index forecast for your area to understand the day’s risk level and take appropriate precautions. 3 4 5 6 7 8
Stay Hydrated - Hydrated skin is healthier skin. Drink plenty of water to maintain your skin’s moisture levels. Use a moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated and prevent dryness caused by sun exposure.
Use Lip Balm with SPF - Don’t forget your lips! Use a lip balm with SPF to protect your lips from sunburn and chapping. Avoid Tanning Beds - Tanning beds emit UV radiation that can be even more intense than the sun, increasing the risk of skin cancer and premature aging. Opt for self-tanning products if you want a sun-kissed look without the risk.

Vacation: Cruise to the Dominican Republic, Grand Turk, and Half Moon Cay
Dates: May 26 - June 1
The Forrester family went on a 6-day Carnival cruise for the first time from May 26 to June 1. The ship (Carnival Magic) had unlimited food and tons of things for the children to do. They had a theater right above the pool and a Deal or No Deal show where Justin won 30 bucks.
They stopped at the Dominican Republic where they swam with dolphins, sharks and pet manatees. Unfortunately, the pictures were over $400, and Justin said, “hold up, why would I pay for something that lives in my head rent free”. Although there are no pictures, the memory will live there forever until he loses it.
From there, they went to the Grand Turk for a short 6-hour stop where they swam and went to the local shopping for souvenirs. Justin decided to authenticate his experience by drinking out of a coconut from a non-FDA compliant food stand. The good news is that he nor his family got sick.
After the short trip, they were off to Half Moon Cay which solidified the entire trip. With clearer waters than your local Dasani filled bottle, the Forrester family were able to swim with the local fish and enjoy some island BBQ. On the way back to the boat, they were able to see a waterspout that was not too far off from them.
To finish off the trip, they drove from Miami to Knoxville (normally 12 hours) for 16 hours where they took 12 stops along the way. Overall, it was a great trip, but I would recommend flying with small children for simplicity.
Take a look at the map to see where your fellow Hartwood employees log on to work each day!
The temperature is not the only thing heating up this summer! After this last heat wave swept through the East Coast, I bet many of us are wondering how will we ever survive the summer heat! But there is nothing like a good summer blockbuster movie to cool our heels. There are so many movies to pick from in the theater, and who doesn’t love a movie comeback? Audiences are curious to see if Eddie Murphy is as funny as he was in the original 1984 debut of Beverly Hills Cop. If you want to be scared, there’s nothing like A Quiet Place, and for the kids Inside Out 2 will make your mouth giggle and your belly jiggle.
On a rainy day, movies offer an enjoyable way to pass the time. Check out the 75 Best Summer Blockbusters of All Time link here. Watching movies from the comfort of your own home is convenient, but isn’t it fun spending a million dollars on popcorn and a soda served in a bucket? Whether you prefer the big screen or small, movies have enthralled audiences for generations.
Can you imagine?
The price of a movie in 1924 was about 25 cents. During the 1920s, movie attendance soared. By the middle of the decade, 50 million people a week went to the movies. On October 6, 1927, Warner Bros. released The Jazz Singer, the first feature-length film to incorporate synchronized sound for sequences of dialogue. Though these sequences were limited and brief, hearing the voices of the film’s stars was a revelation for audiences.

Our June Showcase and Review was hosted by Patrice Billingsley who took the time to demonstrate and answer questions about this new amazing PICR app that she developed. Outstanding work, Patrice! Thanks to all who attended to lend their support!
The Paperwork Reduction Act (PRA) is a law governing how Federal Agencies collect information from the American public. It requires all Federal Agencies to clear their public collections packages through Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA), under the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Agencies must compile a detailed information collection request (ICR) package with specific document requirements and criteria for submission to OMB. Approvals may last up to three years before a collection renewal is required. The process typically
passes through multiple levels of Component headquarterslevel and Agency-level reviewers prior to reaching the OMB Desk Officer for final determination. Packages frequently experience processing delays or rejections due to incomplete package information or underdeveloped supporting documentation.
The Public Information Collection Request (PICR) app is a virtual wizard-driven standardized template to assist new and existing action officers (AOs) of public collections with creating a complete ICR package. PICR simplifies the package development for the AO through direct prompts, provides examples and standard text when required, and indicates if prompt responses may warrant the user to upload or complete additional associated compliance or supporting documentation based on the content of their unique information collection. By ensuring all essential information for the ICR is captured from the AO upfront through the PICR app prompts, PICR provides a straightforward process for AOs, develops a higher-quality initial package product for Component headquarters-level reviewers, provides document control and process transparency, and overall facilitates a more expedient review and approval process.

While the resurgence of vintage technologies like cameras and vinyl records speaks to our nostalgia for the analog era, one of the most unexpected comebacks is the revival of Morse Code. Though this antiquated system of dots and dashes may seem like a relic of the past, Morse Code continues to pulse through our digital age. Morse Code is enjoying a revivial, not just among amateur radio users. Some reasons for it’s resurgence are thought to be because of it’s international reach, reliability, and portability.
Samuel F. B. Morse’s revolutionary telegraph system, developed in the 1830s, used a series of short and long tones - known as dots and dashes - to represent the letters of the alphabet. This primitive yet efficient “Morse Code” allowed for long-range military communications, transmitting information to and from the battlefield. Morse Code served as a precursor to subsequent communication technologies, including the telephone, radio, microwave ovens, computers, and space satellites.
The U.S. Navy and Coast Guard continue to use signal lamps and Morse Code for communication, even though the Army phased out teaching Morse code in 2015. The aviation industry also still widely uses Morse code - the FAA requires pilots to understand
Some old-school gadgets are finding their way back into our hearts and our souls. The industry reports that vinyl record sales have been going up steadily for the past 17 years. In fact, 43 million vinyl records were sold in 2023 alone. The Poloroid camera also made a come back in 2000. It was a pop culture phenomenon in the 1970s. One would have to wonder is it nostagia, curiousity, or do we need a break from this digital world that we live in?
Apple iPod - Introduction 2001 - revolutionized the way consumers listened to music on the move. (Does anyone remember the Sony Walkman though?) Introduction of the smart phone eventually rendered the iPod obsolete. If you have one collecting dust in a drawer, you might want to check it’s value. In 2023, a completely sealed and unopened iPod that was received as a Christmas gift in 2001 sold for a whopping $29,000, though that’s clearly the exception, not the rule. Go ahead and check eBay.
Type writers - There’s a renewed interest in the tactile feel and distinct sound of typewriters. They’re used for writing and decorative purposes, offering a break from the digital world and adding a vintage touch to home offices. But the question remains, do they come with a case of White-Out?
and identify aircraft call signs, as navigation systems like NDBs and VORs transmit their identifiers in Morse.
Until 1991, Morse Code proficiency was mandatory for obtaining an entry-level ham radio license. While computers can now send and receive Morse Code, eliminating the need to learn it, amateur radio operators around the world still actively use it. The International Society for the Preservation of Morse Code is active in several countries, including the U.S., U.K., Australia, and New Zealand.
Morse Code endures due to a blend of nostalgia, curiosity about technological evolution, and the inherent pleasure of the practice as a hobby. Additionally, learning and using Morse Code can provide beneficial brain exercise. Far from disappearing, this timeless mode of communication has endured, defying predictions of its demise.
Flip Phones on the rise - I’m not talking about the new flip phones, I mean the old-school ones. It gives off a retro vibe and people are looking for ways to break their smartphone
addiction while still staying connected to friends and family. So why the FLIP not? I just wonder if in 10 years we will be checking into rehab for smart phone addictions, or is that already a thing?
Vintage Video Games - Can you say Pac-Man!?
Whether you remember playing Pac-Man (circa 1980) as a kid or not, its just one of the many that are still popular arcade games today. We brought the Atari game console into our homes in the 1970s with classics like Pong, Space Invaders, Frogger, Q*bert, and Pole Position, just to name a few. Nintendo followed shortly thereafter. These video consoles and their games are “retro” popular and in demand. In fact Reclaim Arcade, in Frederickburg, VA has opened their doors to host a slew of these old arcade and pinball machines you can play in person. You can also travel back in time by relaxing in a 1980’s themed living room to watch old network TV, pop in a VHS tape, or play an Atari 2600. Host a birthday party, eat, drink, and play video games in the next room. Its a feel good atmosphere!
Will the tech tagline of 2024 be “Just Go Offline”?
Google search trends reported in 2024: 5000% search increase for iPod classic, and 350% search increase for retro game console
Google does many things, but did you know you can use it to learn Morse Code? Morse Typing Trainer is a program designed by Google to help people learn and practice Morse Code simply and easily! It is totally free and requires only a computer or mobile device to get started. It features a full rundown of each letter, accompanied by an image to help recall the code later. Click here to check out this amazing service.
During WWII, Morse Code was utilized between warships and naval bases, because radio frequency was limited and also easily identifiable by military enemies.
Modern day Morse - It is interesting to note that Morse Code still to this day is one of the easiest and least taxing ways to send long range messages that get through when voice communications may not. Continuous Wave (CW) takes up about 150 Hz of bandwidth and requires as little as 5 watts of power to transmit. Compare that to today’s modern radios that can use upwards of 100 watts of power and take 30 to 40 times the amount of bandwidth for voice!
Less than one percent of the population can actually read it today.
