Thriving communities are highly engaged and aware. They value the diversity of people and experiences that define their history and culture.

Thriving communities create their own change. They promote inclusion and equity, and make room for new ideas and ways of collaborating. Thriving communities are resilient and respond to the needs of their members. They determine their own legacy through their compassion. As we reflect on our 90th anniversary, we see our progress tied to what we have done and are committed to affect—and we affirm that continuing to advance this community for generations to come is possible when we work together for good.

Since the late 1980s, the Foundation’s Nonprofit Support Program (NSP) has provided comprehensive resources that help nonprofit leaders think strategically, manage and govern effectively, and connect with other leaders. NSP’s close contact with Greater Hartford’s nonprofits provides the Foundation with a unique understanding of the trends within the sector. This has resulted in programming that has built both regional and national reputations for cutting-edge support to nonprofits. For example, NSP began offering the Building Evaluation Capacity (BEC) program in 2006 to help organizations develop the capacity to conduct effective program evaluation. Thirty-four organizations have completed the program since its introduction. For more information about the Nonprofit Support Program, visit hfpg.org/nsp.

INVESTING STRATEGICALLY IN OUR COMMUNITY GIVES MEANING AND PURPOSE TO LEGACY. Our donors bring their interests, convictions and ambitions to the table. We listen and work closely with them to determine the type of fund that best suits their particular circumstances, goals for giving and desire for involvement.

Larry Lunden is a fascinating person and a joyful soul. His experiences are as diverse as his interests, but they are all tied together by his desire to serve and preserve his community. Larry worked in data processing for the Connecticut State Police for 31 years. He retired in 2003, but hasn’t slowed down at all. Larry is a board member of the Connecticut Audubon

“ By choosing the Hartford Foundation, I could support a wide range of activities and needs, today and in the future. ” — L ARRY LUNDEN

Larry created an unrestricted fund with the Foundation in 1996 because he “was impressed with all of the different nonprofits the Foundation supports.” His steady contributions now total over $150,000. The Lunden Fund is pooled with over 500 other named funds to support the Foundation’s mission. Areas of funding will vary as needs change over time—and that’s exactly what someone as dynamic as Larry wants.

Sylvia Parkinson, a publicity agent for the noted ballerina Anna Pavlova, created a fund to support medical students who intend to practice in the Hartford area.

The Beatrice Fox Auerbach Foundation transferred $53 million to the Hartford Foundation. This donoradvised fund is the largest gift in the Foundation’s history.

In May 2006, 15-year-old KJ Foster was tragically shot outside his home in a case of mistaken identity. KJ was a model student and star athlete with a “gift of gab, charisma and unselfish attitude.” KJ’s untimely death inspired an outpouring of donations. Kerry Foster, Sr., a Hartford firefighter; his wife Janice; and their family, friends and community established the KJ Foster Scholarship Fund in 2008 to provide annual awards to

Building a thriving community is a long-term endeavor. Our carefully managed endowment guarantees the endurance of our resources and the progress it supports. We work hard to balance risk and return, growth and spending so we can protect tomorrow’s assets while steadfastly addressing today’s needs. The Foundation’s spending policy and investment strategy are designed to work together to preserve the inflation-adjusted value of the portfolio over time. This protects the

The value of this approach has been deeply felt during the Recession and our country’s slow recovery. Nearly ninety years ago, two bankers, Maynard T. Hazen and Clark T. Durant, had a vision: establish a community-wide charitable endowment that would accept “gifts, devises and bequests” to serve as a trustworthy, steadfast and responsive charitable resource to the community forever. What sort of institution would they see now? Charitable assets that grew from a single bequest of $1,000 now total more than $934 million. With other local gifts, the Foundation made its first grant in 1936—the midpoint of the Great Depression—awarding its entire grantmaking budget of $982.52 to the Watkinson Library, a research library now housed at Trinity College. In 2014, our grantmaking budget exceeded $32.6 million and supported more than 600 area nonprofits, as well as efforts to advance educational equity and opportunity. As the issues confronting our community have become more complex, so too have our means of addressing them. Over the years we have greatly expanded our reach “beyond the grant” to include special initiatives, community-wide convenings, collaborations and advocacy—all with a goal of supporting thriving communities where every child can learn and succeed, where the arts continue to uplift and inspire and where families are healthy, productive and strong contributors to the economic and civic life of the region. I believe Maynard Hazen and Clark Durant would be proud of the institution they helped establish. Our work is made possible by our dedicated board of directors, staff and volunteers, engaged nonprofits, businesses, residents and fellow funders, and of course, our generous and committed donors—from the local dentist who made that first bequest, to the hundreds of donors who have followed. As we celebrate these 90 years of service to the Greater Hartford region, let us also look to the future, knowing that the promise of philanthropy keeps us together for good.

INVESTMENT RETURNS The Hartford Foundation’s assets are managed by its corporate affiliate, HFPG, Inc. (the “Corporate Portfolio”) and by the Trustee Banks (the “Trust Portfolio”). Donor funds held by HFPG, Inc. are invested on a diversified basis with professional investment managers retained by the Foundation’s Investment Committee. Bank of America, N.A. acts as the Trustee for the component trusts that are held in a common fund. (The other trustee bank is First Niagara Bank.) NEW FUNDS 2014 The Hartford Foundation is proud to partner with the individuals, families and organizations who created new funds in 2014. This is only a small sampling—please read all of their stories of generosity on our website at hfpg.org/funds2014. MATHEW CARUSO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND Scholarship Fund

Mathew Caruso (left) with Chaplain Cornelius J. Griffin

Mathew Caruso was 19 years old when he was killed in Korea on Dec. 6, 1950, as he bravely shielded a chaplain from machine gun fire. Mathew had attended Bulkeley High School in Hartford, and was determined to graduate and continue his education after the war. Since he never got that chance, his brother, retired Superior Court Judge and fellow Marine John Caruso, established this scholarship in his honor. Mathew was posthumously awarded the Silver Star, a Purple Heart, the United Nations Service Medal, and, in 2014, his Bulkeley High School diploma.

FECHTOR FAMILY FOUNDATION FUND Donor-Advised Fund

Robert Fechtor

Robert Fechtor of West Hartford is a successful businessman who has always believed in giving back to his community. In 1989, he and his wife, Louise, established the Fechtor Family Foundation, through which they supported local and national causes. In 2014, Mr. Fechtor transferred the assets to the Hartford Foundation. He and his three sons, Stephen, David, and Richard, are advisors to the fund, and the generosity of the Fechtor family will continue in perpetuity.

SOUTH ASIAN BAR ASSOCIATION ENDOWED FUND Scholarship Fund

The South Asian Bar Association of Connecticut serves as a resource to South Asian lawyers and law students for mentoring, networking, and community outreach. The board and members established this fund to honor the Association’s 10th anniversary. This scholarship supports summer public interest fellowships and currently-enrolled from left to right: Asha Rangappa, Namita Shah, Andy Corea and Cecil J. Thomas

law school students who are in their second, third or fourth year, in good standing, and of South Asian descent or committed to serving the South Asian community.

STANLEY D. AND HINDA N. FISHER FUND Donor-Advised Fund

STANLEY D. FISHER SCHOLARSHIP FUND STANLEY D. AND HINDA N. FISHER SCHOLARSHIP FUND Scholarship Funds

The Hartford Foundation was the grateful recipient of the proceeds of the Fisher Foundation in 2014. The Fisher Foundation had a dynamic program of grantmaking in the area, supporting the arts, health, education, and family and social services agencies. It also awarded scholarships to deserving students, including those at Hall High School, Stanley Fisher’s alma mater. Stanley was a visionary developer of industrial parks in the 1950s and 1960s, and was a supporter of Jewish causes and other worthy projects. Hinda Fisher carried on her husband’s philanthropy and continues with her daughter, Lois, and Beverly Boyle as co-advisors to the Stanley D. and Hinda N. Fisher Fund.

SOUTH WINDSOR HISTORICAL SOCIETY ENDOWMENT FUND Designated Fund

Inspired by a generous offer from supporter Mary Beach Shepard, the board of the South Windsor Historical Society created this fund. It is hoped that other community members will add to this endowment, ensuring long-term stability for the Society to preserve the history of South Windsor, which was settled in 1634. The Society offers educational programs, including the popular Heritage Day, manages the Pleasant Valley District 5 Schoolhouse Museum, and is also restoring the Union District School building.
