LAST MEETING

The two teams last met a season ago on Feb. 23, 2022, where the Hawks would hold on to take a 74-71 victory over the Retrievers. Abby Streeter and Paula Maurina led Hartford, scoring 24 and 23 points, respectively. Carmen Villalobos finished with a double-double, hauling in 11 rebounds while scoring 12 points.

The Hartford women’s basketball team welcomes former America East conference foe UMBC to Chase Family Arena on Thursday, Dec. 22. Tipoff between the Hawks and Retrievers is set for 2 p.m.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

UMBC enters play looking to get back in the win column, falling 70-68 most recently to American University on Sunday, Dec. 18. Graduate student Kiara Bell ranks first on the team averaging 10.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Bell’s average of 7.6 rpg is good enough to rank top-five in the America East. Graduate student Keelah Dixon and sophomore Laycee Drake have been the key distributors for the Retrievers, dishing out a team-leading 2.2 assists per game. Graduate student KK White provides an extra scoring threat for the Retrievers offense, posting 9.6 ppg.

LAST TIME OUT

The Hawks dropped their last outing, 70-34, at Binghamton on Tuesday, Dec. 20. Sophomore Nayeli Dowding led the Hawks in scoring, finsihing with 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor. Junior Kymilondra Nance dropped a career-high eight points while also swiping a game-high three steals. Senior Irene Primo and freshman Elena Houghton tied for the team-lead grabbing five rebounds. Sophomore Brianna Williams rejected a career-high three shots. Binghamton outrebounded Hartford 47-31, while Genevieve Coleman led all scorers,

finishing with 17 points for the Bearcats.

FLOCKING TO THE BOARDS

Hartford as a team averages 29.0 rebounds per game thus far into the season. Freshman Elena Houghton leads the team averaging 5.3 rpg while Brianna Williams looks to provide an extra paint presence for the Hawks rebounding efforts. Through two games the sophomore from Brampton, Ontario, has averaged 4.5 rpg.

DOUBLE-DIGIT SCORING

The Hawks have seen six of their athletes score in double figures throughout the season, two being key returners senior Irene Primo and sophomore Nayeli Dowding. Dowding enters Thursday on a two-game double-figure scoring streak. The Baldwin, N.Y., native dropped a career-high 15 points last time inside Chase Family Arena against CCSU on Dec. 18. Primo led the Hawks from the get-go, scoring a career-high 14 points against LIU in the season opener on Nov. 12. Adding to the double-digit scoring are freshman standouts Tatum Forbes, Zaiha Minnis and Elena Houghton along with newcomer Jasmine Barnes. Forbes and Minnis have combined to lead the Hartford offense in scoring in 50 percent of the teams contests.

Hartford hits the road for seven-straight, starting on Friday, Dec. 30 traveling to Loretto, Pa., to take on Saint Francis. Tipoff between the Hawks and Red Flash is set for 7 p.m. at DeGol Arena.
