LAST MEETING

The two teams last met a season ago on Dec. 17, 2021, where the Blue Devils would walk away victorious over the Hawks by a score of 73-50. Paula Maurina led Hartford’s scoring output, finishing with 10 points off the bench. Marisa Lee added eight points and grabbed team-high six rebounds on the night.

TODAY’S MATCH

The Hartford women’s basketball team welcomes in-state rival Central Connecticut State University to Chase Family Arena Sunday, Dec. 18. Tipoff between the Hawks and Blue Devils is set for 2 p.m.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

CCSU enters Sunday’s contest after falling to Providence and UMass Lowell in its previous two matchups. The Blue Devils fell to the River Hawks, 60-47, before dropping a 77-45 decision against the Friar’s on Dec. 10. Lara Rohkohl, Meghan Kenefick and Dejah Jenkins all rank amongst the top-10 in the NEC in rebounding. Rohkohl ranks fifth (6.1 rpg), while Kenefick ranks sixth (6.0 rpg), and Jenkins at ninth (5.7 rpg). The Blue Devils as a team average 11.8 offensive rebounds per game after grabbing 38 offensive boards in the last three games. Jenkins not only ranks top-10 in rebounding, she also leads the squad averaging 11.7 points per game. Forever Toppin has been a menace to opposing ball-handlers, leading the team grabbing 2.1 steals per game.

LAST TIME OUT

The Hawks dropped their last outing, 88-34, at Rhode Island on Dec. 7. Freshman Zaiha Minnis came off the bench to drop a career-high 12 points on 50 percent shooting from the field. Freshman Tatum Forbes added eight points and recorded team-highs with six rebounds and three assists. URI outrebounded Hartford 50-21, while Emmi Rinat led all scorers, finishing with

23 points for the rams.

RETURNING SCORERS

Two of Hartford’s returners, senior Irene Primo and sophomore Nayeli Dowding have been consistent scoring options in the Hawks’ rotation. Dowding ranks second on the squad averaging 7.0 ppg, after notching her 100th career point against Cornell on Dec. 5. Primo follows closely behind with 6.4 ppg, while also dishing out 1.7 assists per game. The Tres Cantos, Spain native enters play 31 points off her milestone of 200 career points. The senior has recorded a career-high 64 points on .250 shooting from the field thus far into the season.

FRESHMAN STANDOUTS

The Hartford freshman class has averaged 18.8 ppg, good for 46 percent of the Hawks’ scoring totals. Forbes continues to lead the way for Hartford, posting 7.8 ppg, while Minnis and freshman Elena Houghton rank top-five scoring 5.9 and 3.7 ppg, respectively. Houghton has been a beast in the defensive paint for the Hawks, averaging a team-leading 1.2 blocks per game. Forbes and Minnis have led the Hawks’ offense in scoring in six of the team’s first 10 outings.

The Hawks hit the road Monday, traveling to Vestal, N.Y., to take on Binghamton Tuesday, Dec. 20. Tipoff between Hartford and the Bearcats is set for 6 p.m. from the Dr. Bai Lee Court.
