TODAY’S MATCH
Hartford men’s basketball will open its 2022-23 campaign Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. when the Hawks welcome the Sacred Heart Pioneers to Chase Arena at the Reich Family Pavilion.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Tuesday will mark the 18th meeting between the Hawks and the Pioneers. Hartford leads the all-time series, 11-6, having won four of the last six matchups against the Pioneers. Hartford owns a 6-2 edge in games played in West Hartford inside the Chase Family Arena.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
Sacred Heart was picked to finish second in the Northeast Conference’s annual preseason poll behind topranked Merrimack. Junior forward Nico Galette was named to the NEC’s Preseason All-Conference team. Galette led SHU with 236 rebounds in 2021-22 and is the team’s leading returning scorer (12.4 points per game). SHU picked up a trio of veterans who will look to make an immediate impact this season: graduate transfer guards Brendan McGuire and Raheem Solomon, as well as junior guard Aidan Carpenter.
LAST TIME THEY MET
Hartford defeated SHU, 78-71, inside
the Pitt Center in Fairfield, Conn., on Dec. 22, 2021. Hunter Marks was one of four Hawks to score in doublefigures, leading the way with a careerbest 31 point outing. Aaron Clarke led SHU with 23 points, while Galette contributed 14 points and seven rebounds. Trailing at halftime, the Hawks made a late surge in the game’s closing minutes to lock up the victory.
NEW-LOOK HAWKS
The Hawks lost their top six scorers from last season, with junior Briggs McClain (5.3 ppg) returning as Hartford’s leading producer. Graduate forward Jared Kimbrough tops that returning group with 16 starts last season, averaging 21.3 minutes per contest. McClain brings an attacking style to the Hawks’ offense, which will also look for big contributions from returners Kurtis Henderson, Michael Dunne and Kimbrough. Henderson appeared in 20 games as a freshman last season, connecting on 5 of 13 attempts (.385) from long range. Dunne (9.2 mpg, 2.2 ppg) is also a threat to score from the outside.
