Royal Hall A stunning 1000-seat Edwardian performance hall, and the UK’s only surviving Kursaal, hosting some of the biggest and best entertainment.

Harrogate Theatre A 500-seat Victorian theatre hosting an array of drama, comedy, music, dance, family entertainment and education programmes.

Studio Theatre A 70-seat versatile performance space situated on the top floor of Harrogate Theatre, hosting theatrical experiences from some of the most exciting emerging companies producing an eclectic mix of shows.

All Points North God’s Own County is teeming with dramaturgical talent – companies, writers, directors and actors – and that’s why last year we decided to make a fuss about the exciting diversity of Yorkshire theatre in All Points North, an annual mini-season that puts Yorkshire in the limelight. Two world premieres, two major revivals and one exciting new play starting its first tour: the second All Points North festival looks set to capitalise on the success of last year’s inaugural Yorkshire jamboree, with more plays and more breadth showcasing even more Yorkshire brilliance. Northern Broadsides returns, premiering another smashing social comedy and fresh Yorkshire company Rich Seam Theatre presents the premiere of a new Nick Lane comic play. Yorkshire playwriting institution John Godber revives Teechers, his classic look at education, and Reform Theatre bring David Bown’s comedy of manners and football back onto the pitch. Finally, brand new troupe Elemental Theatre Company takes Sarah Wallis’s The Rain King on its first ever tour, kicking off in Harrogate. It’s going to be champion.

HARROGATE THEATRE

FRI 6 - SAT 21 SEPT Northern Broadsides in partnership with Harrogate Theatre presents

The Grand Gesture By Deborah McAndrew Freely adapted from The Suicide by Nikolai Erdman Directed by Conrad Nelson Simeon Duff is working class, unemployed and desperate. His wife works. He’s lost all self-esteem. He’s on the scrapheap and wants to end it all. So begins this brilliant comedy about a man on the edge. When word gets out that Duff is going to top himself, a host of ne’er-do-wells crawl out of the woodwork, each wanting to claim his grand gesture for their ‘noble’ cause. Will Duff do it? And will it be for love, politics, religion – or the rising price of fish?

From the team behind last year’s A Government Inspector comes a riotous evening of comic mayhem and exquisite farce, complete with gypsy band and heavenly choir. The perfect answer to a long autumn evening in Austerity Britain and brought to you by the multi-award winning Northern Broadsides, think Rising Damp meets Monty Python with a pinch of Mrs Brown’s Boys.

Reform Theatre & Harrogate Theatre presents

Written by Nick Lane Performed by Matthew Booth

Written by David Bown

1882. After years of inspiration, innovation, and occasional idiocy, Yorkshireman Thomas Crapper is given the commission to provide toilets for Her Majesty Queen Victoria.

Phil and Kev religiously attend United’s tedious matches, but are starting to wonder why. Meanwhile Vicky and Laura are playing an all-too-familiar game of manhunting in the local boozer.

On the eve of the first ‘royal flush,’ Thomas writes a very personal letter - to a girl he hasn’t seen in more than 40 years...

When the four come together for a Saturday night out each realises they’re at a pivotal moment in their lives. Something’s got to give...

2012. At an old people’s home in Crapper’s home town of Thorne, Joe, a ‘maintenance engineer’ (toilet cleaner), has the job of a lifetime on his hands: he’s got to get all the toilets - even the awkward one in Room 8 - sparkling clean in preparation for a Diamond Jubilee royal visit.

Associate company Reform Theatre tackle David Bown’s hard-hitting and Sunday Times Playwriting award-winning comedy of manners (and football) with trademark gusto and humour.

Royal Flush

Has he got enough Cif to cope? Can he persuade Fat Irene to keep off the nuts? And will his secret plan to solve all his problems work? Following last year’s brilliant Beef, Rich Seam Theatre presents the world premiere of this hilarious double-bill, showing how our attitudes to toilets, and the royal flush, have changed over the years.

The Rain King Written by Sarah Wallis

Written & Directed by John Godber A biting, witty comedy from the writer of Bouncers, Up ‘n’ Under and Losing The Plot. Gail, Hobby and Salty are three fifth form students who, through their end of term play, tell the hilarious story of an idealistic new teacher in his perilous first days inside a local comprehensive school. In this contemporary classic, the three cast members effortlessly transform into a vast array of other characters, including teachers, dinner ladies, students and, of course, the school bully. Teechers puts the education system under a microscope, examining themes and issues still relevant today.

Arriving in sub-Saharan Africa, gap-year student and part-time Elvis impersonator Aidan has with him his principles, his broken heart and his Elvis costume. Janet is his supervisor; a woman with a Mrs Robinson complex, who ran away to Africa 20 years ago and never ran back. And then there is Msoko, Janet’s African fixer, who has her own stories to tell. As Aidan searches for belonging and peace, others search for comfort and water. What secrets are people hiding? Will they find water? Will the goat survive? And will the Rain King’s peculiar brand of magic ever materialize? In this time of austerity we need reminding that grand ideas led by inspiring people looking to their heroes still have a chance of success. The Rain King asks questions about how we survive: from where the water supply is coming from, to how we make it from sunrise to sunset each day.

Clint van der Linde (Flavio, Xerxes) returns to ETO as the errant hero, and Hannah Pedley makes a glamorous debut as Medea. HARROGATE THEATRE

The Coronation of Poppea Monteverdi’s final masterpiece is often described as his greatest achievement featuring some of his most glorious music. The corpse-rich smell of hideous entombment forces him to retch but still he descends. The ceremony must begin. Lovecraft’s chilling tales about forbidden knowledge in this character-driven adaptation full of subtle horror.

MON 24 FEB - SAT 15 MAR Harrogate Theatre and Oldham Coliseum Theatre presents

Alan Ayckbourn’s Bedroom Farce Delia and Ernest. Malcolm and Kate. Jan and Nick. Susannah and Trevor.

“Ayckbourn’s comic masterpiece” The Daily Telegraph

Three bedrooms plus four couples equals one chaotic night. Funny, gripping and acutely observed, Alan Ayckbourn’s sophisticated comedy lifts the lid on the secrets of middle-class marriage. Over the course of one night, one outrageously selfish couple parade their problems around the bedrooms of three other couples, exposing the cracks in other people’s marriages as well as their own. A tightly written tragi-comedy, Bedroom Farce explores the varied pressures of relationships at different stages, slicing deep into the soul of suburbia.

HARROGATE THEATRE

MON 16 - SAT 21 JUNE

A classic. A landmark. A legend. Famous around the world for being the longest running show of any kind in the history of British theatre – and with more than 25,000 performances under its belt, The Mousetrap is a play to be proud of. To celebrate 60 incredible years on stage, the record-breaking, smash-hit thriller is going on tour for the first time, offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see this masterpiece, complete with star cast, here at Harrogate Theatre. A group of people gathered in a country house cut off by the snow discover to their horror that there is a murderer in their midst. Who can it be? One by one the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until at the last, nerve-shredding moment the identity and the motive are finally revealed.

In her own inimitable style, Dame Agatha Christie created an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and a brilliantly intricate plot where murder lurks around every corner. After 60 years, it’s still as fresh as ever.

“The cleverest murder mystery of British Theatre” The Telegraph

“A truly entertaining classic thriller” The Sunday Times

“Deservedly a classic among murder thrillers” The Observer
