Welcome

Crime Novel of the Year Partners:

Ten years ago, a handful of us were cajoled into putting together a crime festival in the sedate Victorian spa town of Harrogate. We called in favours from reluctant friends, persuaded publishers to come north of the M25 and compiled a programme that excited us. We hoped it would attract readers too. We must have done something right, because the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival is now the most vibrant and popular event of its kind anywhere in the world. Because we’re inclusive. We include the very best writers, from newbies to icons of the genre. We include translated fiction, TV and film adaptation, a quiz and, of course, beer. We don’t hide the writers away – we include them in the rolling party in the bar. And in everything we do, we include the readers. Because writers without readers are redundant.

Event Sponsors:

Enjoy your visit. Enjoy becoming part of the heritage of homicide.

Val McDermid, 2013 Festival Programming Chair

It’s a great joy to have supported for so many years this very special festival that’s head and shoulders above any other in the world. Since 2004, we’ve enjoyed this symbiotic partnership of beer and crime fiction. Old Peculier is a unique and unusual brew named after the Court of the Peculier in Masham, which was established in the 12th Century to deal with local misdemeanours. It really has been the perfect fit. It’s heartening how business and culture can truly support and benefit each other, particularly in austere times.

Special Projects

Premier Partners:

I’d like to welcome you to the Old Swan Hotel, whether you are an old returning friend, or new to the event. Programming Chair Val McDermid has delivered a remarkable line-up celebrating a ‘Decade of Crime’, and as one of the Festival’s co-founders, 2013 is set to be a very special event. I am also honoured to welcome the 9th Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award, with our retail partners, WH Smith. We’re celebrating with a beer brewed especially - A Shot in the Dark – a full bodied ale that like a good crime novel is richly exciting and unusual. Enjoy the convivial atmosphere and the criminally good books, here’s to the next decade! Cheers.

Two new novels from the Queen of British Crime Writing

Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award & Opening Party

Thu 18 July, 8pm | Ticket Price: £16

Welcome to crime writing’s Oscars with host, Mark Lawson. The anticipation is worthy of a nail-biting thriller from any of our guest writers. Who will be the victor and who the victims in one of crime fiction’s most hotly contested and prestigious award ceremonies? Steady the nerves with a pint of Yorkshire’s finest ale and continue the celebrations and commiserations after the presentation at the official Festival Opening Party. Ticket price includes canapés and glass of wine or Old Peculier.

Special Guest: Ruth Rendell

Fri 19 July, 9am | Ticket Price: £13

When it comes to persuading us to reveal our innermost secrets, nobody does it better than our friends. That’s why we persuaded Jeanette Winterson OBE to open the festival in conversation with Baroness Rendell of Babergh CBE. What do two of our leading writers talk about when they’re together? As the Guardian recently observed, ‘Winterson is a mesmerising presence who seems to speak in perfect sentences and construct perfect images as constantly and naturally as the rest of us breathe’. Who better, then, to explore the rich writings of Rendell, creator of Chief Inspector Wexford and, as Barbara Vine, sending more shivers up our spines than seems fair? Rendell is credited for transforming the whodunit into the whydunit, changing the form of the classic police procedural with astute psychological insights and concerns with the nuances of society, re-shaping the genre with her humanity. Don’t miss the chance to see two fierce talents who have blazed their own paths on one electrifying stage. sponsored by

Dead in Deutschland

Fri 19 July, 10.30am | Ticket Price: £10

European crime fiction has made a killing recently, but is it time for the Scandinavians to pass their woolly jumpers to their southern neighbours? Crime novels or ‘Krimis’ have exploded in Germany with festivals and bookshops devoted to the bestsellers. Four German crime writers shed light on the burgeoning scene, exploring why the genre has finally demanded respect within their culture. The UK’s leading expert on translated crime fiction Barry Forshaw asks Jan Costin Wagner, Sebastian Fitzek, Nele Neuhaus and Dane Jussi Adler-Olsen whether German crime fiction is the Next Big Thing?

Victorian Crime: Fact or Fiction

Fri 19 July, 12pm | Ticket Price: £10

Is truth stranger than fiction? The Victorian era was rife with intrigue and mystery, and sensational murder stories sold newspapers and crime fiction in a way never seen before. Digging up and decoding history is an art of detection in itself, as writers become investigators of the past. We bring together both factual and fictional writers to provide an anatomy of Victorian crime. Chair Sarah Pinborough seeks out the truth leading authors Kate Colquhoun, Lyndsay Faye, Kate Summerscale and Andrew Taylor down a myriad of dark Victorian alleys. sponsored by

Social Media: Who are You?

Fri 19 July, 2pm | Ticket Price: £10

Do you dream in hashtags? According to the government’s Chief Scientist, the web is redefining human identity, changing people’s views of who they are and their place in the world. It’s an addictive but questionable force. So how do authors navigate these virtual choppy waters? Are they just procrastinating on Twitter? And what becomes of fragile egos in the hands of ruthless online avatars? Explore the fine line between social media success and social media suicide with authors Ruth Dudley-Edwards, Erin Kelly, Steve Mosby and Sarah Pinborough. Giving them a #FF in this perfect ‘Follow Friday’ event is chair Mark Billingham. Join the conversation online live at #TOPCRIME2013

Touching Evil

Take time to investigate them at the festival this July

Fri 19 July, 3.30pm | Ticket Price: £10

At the 2011 Festival, news broke of the massacre on Utoya in Norway. During the 2012 Festival, news broke of a gunman opening fire at a movie premiere of The Dark Knight Rises in Colorado. In both horrific cases, the news threw into stark relief the conversations onstage. In a world where unspeakable crimes are committed, does crime fiction anatomise or glorify crime? Does it provide readers with consolation and enlightenment or does it further disturb? These haunting questions will be discussed by authors who are keenly aware of such difficult dimensions and explore them in their work. Michael Ridpath chairs the panel with Belinda Bauer, writing duo Nicci French, Alex Marwood and Stav Sherez.

Standing on the Shoulders of Giants

Fri 19 July, 5pm | Ticket Price: £10

Isaac Newton famously attributed his own success to this. The voices of great writers, past and present, echoes right across the crime genre, mostly because authors are fans too. The towering influences of other much-admired writers can inspire, scare and shape novelists in many ways, including some they’re not even aware of till later. We ask Sophie McKenzie, Denise Mina, Louise Penny and Henry Sutton - four of crime writing’s hottest names - to reflect on their own heroes and divulge which books they return to time and again, as chair Martyn Waites asks whose shoulders it is they strain to peek over.

Special Guest: Susan Hill

Fri 19 July, 8.30pm | Ticket Price: £13

A prolific writer with a shining talent for storytelling, Susan Hill CBE has celebrated over half a century as a published novelist. Hill’s venture into crime fiction, with the popular Simon Serailler series, has drawn huge audiences and established her as an international success. Prior to crime, she wrote entirely from her imagination – best known, perhaps, for the chilling Woman in Black that has dominated the West End for over 20 years and recently starred Daniel Radcliffe on the big screen. Interested in the psychology of crime, Hill credits the genre with opening up a rich stream of new ideas and challenges for her to discover and define contemporary life. Returning to her home county of Yorkshire, Hill will be interviewed by acclaimed reviewer and author N.J. Cooper. sponsored by

Fleming Fans: Bond Panel

Fri 19 July, 10pm | Ticket Price: £10

Casino Royale, the very first of Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels, celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2013 and is this year’s Big Read (see p.27). This panel will showcase those authors who know their Golden Guns from their Golden Eyes, writers who have been, and still are, inspired by Ian Fleming’s books and who talk eloquently about the immense shadow Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang casts on British crime and thriller writing. You’ll be shaken AND stirred by authors Sam Bourne, J.J. Connolly, Susan Hill and Gregg Hurwitz, who will be given the license to thrill by chair Charles Cumming. sponsored by

Special Guest: William McIlvanney in Conversation with Ian Rankin

Sat 20 July, 9am | Ticket Price: £13

William McIlvanney is the Godfather of Tartan Noir. He blazed a trail with the Jack Laidlaw trilogy that dozens have followed. He demonstrated how perfectly contemporary Scotland was suited to the dark evisceration of crime fiction. Born in Kilmarnock to a mining family, McIlvanney puts his working class Scottish heritage at the heart and soul of his writing. Now the Godfather himself will appear in conversation with fellow tartan titan Ian Rankin, whose globally successful Rebus novels were inspired by McIlvanney. Don’t miss the chance to discover first hand McIlvanney’s incredible life and works with one of those he inspired. sponsored by

Forensics: Val McDermid in Conversation with Sue Black

Sat 20 July, 10.30am | Ticket Price: £13

DNA and forensic science have transformed the detection of crime. And they force writers to pay attention to the minutiae under the microscope. International bestselling crime writer Val McDermid, known for her Dr Tony Hill series, which was adapted for TV as Wire In The Blood, appears in conversation with Professor Sue Black OBE, the charismatic director of the award winning Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification at Dundee University and one of the leading forensic anthropologists working in the UK today. Join Sue and Val for crime fiction on the dissection table, as they discuss how meticulously researched murder thrillers transform criminal fact into criminal fiction. (And find out where Val really gets her ideas from!) sponsored by

New Blood

Sat 20 July, 12pm | Ticket Price: £10

Always a must-see, this event will put 2013 Programming Chair, Queen of Crime Val McDermid, in the hot seat to present four of the brightest new talents on the scene, inviting them to discuss their debut novels. Eager readers on the lookout for the next big thing will discover a sure-fire list of ‘ones to watch’. Introducing Derek B. Miller Norwegian by Night, Anya Lipska Where The Devil Can’t Go, Malcolm Mackay The Necessary Death of Lewis Winter and Colette McBeth Precious Thing. It sounds bloody. But then any subversive approach to stereotypes and conformity is bound to create a stir. Especially amongst the crowd who like to play by the rules. But defying the rules in any art form gives rise to the development of new genres and styles. The crime genre has always had its bossyboots critics ready to lay down the law about what a crime novel should be. But in this panel, iconoclastic authors Stuart MacBride, Catriona McPherson, Manda Scott and Cathi Unsworth speak to broadcaster Mark Lawson about breaking the mould, bending the rules, flouting the conventions, sticking their tongues out and generally pushing the boundaries of the genre. sponsored by

Special Guest: Charlaine Harris

Well, aren’t we all? This is a unique chance to meet the writer whose creative mind brought us the crazy southern world of Sookie. Charlaine Harris’ meticulously crafted realm inspired the beloved HBO hit series True Blood; described by the Emmy-winning creator Alan Ball as ‘popcorn for smart people’, the first season caused an overnight sensation. Journalist and broadcaster Paul Blezard sinks his teeth into the New York Times bestseller and her phenomenal thirty year career writing mysteries, from stand-alone novels to the Shakespeare mysteries and of course, the bestselling series of supernatural romantic thrillers.

BIG READ Join in the 2013 Big Read and our celebration of the sixtieth anniversary of the creation of the greatest ever fictional spy, James Bond, by reading the very first Bond novel, Casino Royale, this summer. The Book ‘Surround yourself with human beings, my dear James. They are easier to fight for than principles’. There really is only one Bond! In Casino Royale, first published in 1953 and an instant success, Fleming introduces one of the most captivating and popular fictional characters to the world. In this, the first of Fleming’s 007 adventures, a game of cards is James Bond’s only chance to bring down the desperate SMERSH agent Le Chiffre. But Bond soon discovers that there is far more at stake than money. The Author Ian Lancaster Fleming was born in London in 1908. His first job was at Reuters news agency after which he worked briefly as a stockbroker before joining Naval Intelligence during the Second World War. Following Casino Royale, Fleming went on to write twelve other Bond books as well as two works of non-fiction and the children’s classic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The Bond books have sold over sixty million copies and earned praise from figures such as Raymond Chandler, who called Fleming ‘the most forceful and driving writer of thrillers in England’ and President Kennedy, who named From Russia with Love as one of his favourite books. The books inspired a hugely successful series of film adaptations which began in 1961 with the release of Dr No, starring Sean Connery as 007. It’s a phenomenon dubbed ‘the Richard and Judy effect’ – if a novel is in their book club, it virtually guarantees bestseller status, making them the most powerful couple in publishing, as well as one of the most successful partnerships in TV history. Now the couple are playing it as its own game with their first foray into fiction. This is a rare opportunity to see the candid pair in conversation on their debut novels, Judy Finnigan on Eloise and Richard Madeley on Some Day I’ll Find You. Journalist Danuta Kean will chair the discussion. Tickets: £15 Unreserved

and try new things. We simply couldn’t have done it without all of your knowledge, ingenuity and tenacity!

Back in early 2003, the very first meeting of incredible minds converged at a hotel in Harrogate to discuss the possibility of the Harrogate Crime Writing Festival. A decade on, and the success of the Festival now speaks for itself, with some of the biggest names and brightest talents in international crime fiction appearing on the Harrogate stage each July! The full team at the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival would like to say a huge and heartfelt thank you to all of those that have helped the Festival to become ‘Europe’s largest Crime Writing Festival’, with an audience of over 12,000. Starting with the co-founder, the incomparable Val McDermid, who chaired the inaugural Festival in 2003 and the two following Festivals in 2004 & 2005, to Jane BradishEllames who guided the Festival so wonderfully into being during its early years, and the time and expertise of the Programming Committee since 2003: Maria Rejt, Hilary Hale, Selina Walker and David Shelley, with a special thank you to the incredible literary agent Jane Gregory, who has remained on the committee since the Festival’s inception. Each of the amazing programming chairs has brought individual voices and thrown unique characters in to the mix, so thank you again Val McDermid (for four incredible years) and also Mark Billingham, NJ Cooper, Simon Kernick, Laura Wilson, Stuart MacBride and Dreda Say Mitchell, for giving your personalities and allowing the Festival to embrace new areas

Reading, and the joy and pleasure we take from it, is what the Festival is all about, so thank you to our two dedicated and wonderful Readers-InResidence, Ann Cleeves and Martyn Waites, for making sure that, alongside the incredible crime writers we’ve had the joy of meeting and sharing the reading experience with, it’s the very special fans themselves who have been given a voice at the Festival too. And finally, the Festival would not have reached a ‘Decade Of’ being without the fantastic support of our dedicated sponsors, who throughout the years have continued to believe and invest in the value of the Festival, and allowed this one criminally good weekend to take place in Harrogate each and every July. To our title sponsor, Theakstons Old Peculier (and in particular T&R Theakston Ltd.’s Executive Director Simon Theakston, who has been instrumental to the Festival’s continuation and its growth across the region, and further afield both nationally and internationally) and to our strong base of partners and event sponsors, who all allow us to bring our creative ideas to life, we couldn’t have done it without you! We very much look forward to celebrating with you all in July; and here’s to another decade of original, inventive and inspiring programmes! The Festival Team
