Finance How Can You Protect Your Money With a Lasting Power of Attorney and a Will?

L

asting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) are legal documents that help to protect your money if you’re unable to manage your own finances for any reason. Wills contain instructions on how your money should be distributed when you die.

So why should you make a Lasting Power of Attorney and a Will, and how do you do it? Let’s start by looking at Lasting Powers of Attorney.

What is a Lasting Power of Attorney and why do you need one?

A Lasting Power of Attorney is a document that appoints one or more individuals (attorneys) to make decisions and act on your behalf (the donor) in relation to your property, finances, health and welfare.

A Will allows you to decide in advance who will inherit your money and possessions. Making a Will helps you avoid inheritance tax, or reduce it – inheritance tax currently stands at 40% and applies to some deceased estates over £325,000.¹

Should you suffer a stroke, lose mental capacity or experience a debilitating ailment, a Lasting Power of Attorney ensures important aspects of your life are taken care of by one or more individuals you trust.

How do you make a Will?

As with a Lasting Power of Attorney you can ask a solicitor or professional Will writer to make your Will or you can do it yourself.

Some charities also offer free or reduced cost Will-writing services in return for a donation, so this may be worth considering.

Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney You can ask a solicitor to draw up these documents for you or set them up yourself.

If you decide to set up a Lasting Power of Attorney yourself, you must be over eighteen and have the mental capacity to do so.

It’s sensible to seek professional assistance in drawing up your Will if your circumstances aren’t straightforward. If you do decide to write your own Will, you can buy ‘blank’ templates that provide simple guidance and example wording at stationery stores and online. You’ll need to consider who to appoint as your Trustee(s) and who will inherit your money and possessions.

There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney: •

You can download the forms from the gov.uk website or complete them online. They must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before they can become effective, which currently costs £82 per document.

Drawing up a Lasting Power of Attorney and a Will protects your money if you fall ill or lose mental capacity, and in the event of your death. Writing these documents is an important consideration at any age, but it becomes more so as you get older – a time when your health may be more likely to fail.

Autumn Show by pippa Greenwood

N

ow that autumn is upon us and temperature and light levels drop, many of the larger plants in the garden begin to prepare for winter. Leaves, shrubs and climbers grab our attention with their change of colours, with nondescript greens transforming to screaming scarlets, radiant reds and glorious golds. So why not make sure that your garden enjoys some of this seasonal action?

There are some gorgeous climbing plants with spectacular autumn colour, including Parthenocissus quniquefolia, more commonly known as the Virginia creeper.

This is a sizeable climber with a good degree of self-clinging ability, so it can be used to clothe walls where you have not fixed up a support system. In autumn the leaves are numerous shades of scarlet, orange and red. It can grow very tall so will ultimately need trimming if, say, you grow it on a house wall, or it will move on to the roof.

that becomes thickly covered with lovely whitish blossom in spring, giving a much longer-lasting display than the flowering cherries. The emerging leaves are a coppery colour before they change to bright green, but in autumn the entire shrub almost appears to be on fire as the leaves take on their autumn colours. It is one of my favourites.

For less extensive covering, consider Parthenocissus henryana, a more restrained relative of the Virginia creeper. For much of the year the divided leaves are a dark green to bronzy colour with pretty silvery white veins that in autumn turn to rich shades of red.

A reliable small-scale plant for autumn leaf colour is the blueberry. This acidloving, boggy-soil-needing plant turns into a miniature ball of fire once it takes on its autumn colour, as well as providing pretty white summer flowers and a crop of delicious blueberries if you have two or more plants.

Another autumn climber, Vitis coignetiae, is closely related to the grape vine but grows more rapidly and has huge heart-shaped leaves measuring up to 25-30cm across, with splendid scarlet and crimson colours come the autumn. This vine grows so strongly that it can be grown through large trees and over sturdier supports, and the colours often improve if the soil is miserable or the root run restricted!

Fothergilla major or Witch Alder is a superb smallish to medium-sized shrub that is covered with scented creamy-white spiky flower clusters that appear early in the year whilst the stems are still bare. Pale green for much of the year, the foliage turns shades of yellow and orange in the autumn. Fothergilla needs a lime-free or acidic

Making the Best of Autumn Colour Potential

soil, so check your soil pH or acidity levels before you buy one as it does not do so well in a tub.

• It is a great time to choose plants for autumn colour, but if you’re undecided why not visit local garden centres or an arboretum? If possible, buy autumn colour plants now whilst they are still holding on to some of their autumn coloured leaves, as then you can see the precise shades that the various plants have to offer.

Cotinus or smoke bush also has fantastic autumn colours, and is a shrub with attractively rounded leaves in shades of green, pinkish-orange or purple that come the autumn produces a bright display to be proud of. The fluffy seed heads left after flowering look just like little clouds or plumes of smoke – perfect with the bonfire-like appearance of the leaves! There are lots of different varieties available, so don’t just choose the first one you find.

• Always check the ultimate or potential height and spread of trees or shrubs you’re considering – there’s no use planting something that will outgrow its space in a couple of years’ time.

• Planting at this time of year works well too, but if your garden soil is very wet or waterlogged then wait for a few weeks until it is in better condition. If the soil is on the dry side, plants will still need watering well, and the soil around the roots will need to be kept moist once the plants are in the ground.

Acers or maples are generally reliable autumn showstoppers, and for smaller gardens it’s hard to beat one of the Japanese maples with their stunning divided leaves turning to rich purples, reds, oranges and yellows, depending on which one you have planted. The Japanese maples also do well in large tubs such as a half barrel and so are perfect for a sheltered back yard or patio, as well as looking great in a bed or border.

MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS TO HARROGATE TOWN AFC Who for the 1st time in their 106 year history, have entered the National Football league, after beating Notts County 3-1 in the National League promotion final at Wembley on 2 August.

This will be a great boost not only for our club but for the Harrogate economy in general.

For a short period at the beginning of the new football season, Harrogate Town will share the Doncaster Keepmoat Stadium as the Harrogate CNG ground on Wetherby Road is upgraded. The existing artificial surface is being replaced by a grass pitch, which should be ready for the 10th of September, New floodlighting will be installed, and a brand new Family 1000 seater stand, that will boost the capacity of the ground to 5000.

On Saturday 8th August Harrogate Town’s jubuliant celebrations culimanated in an open topped bus tour of the Town, to the delight of their loyal fans. We look forward to their continued success when the new football season recommences in September.

Peppered pork steaks with sautéed vegetables

Serves: 4 Ready in: 35 minutes

and sprinkle half the mixture over the pork steaks, turning to coat. Set aside.

2. Parboil the diced vegetables in a pan of lightly salted boiling water for 2 minutes. Drain well. Heat the oil and butter in a heavy-based frying pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and vegetables and sauté for 6-8 minutes until almost tender, stirring frequently.

3. Meanwhile, heat a griddle pan over a high heat. Add the pork steaks and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until seared and just cooked through. Remove from the pan, cover tightly with foil and rest for 10 minutes.

4 thick-cut pork steaks 2 tsp coarsely ground black pepper 1 tsp dried thyme 1 tsp dried oregano 1 large parsnip, peeled and diced 2 small turnips, peeled and diced 1 tbsp olive oil 15g butter 1 onion, roughly chopped 1 large apple, peeled, cored and diced 100ml apple juice 1 tsp Dijon mustard

4. Add the diced apple to the sautéed veg and cook for a further 3-4 minutes until tender and golden, then stir in the remaining pepper and herb mix along with the apple juice and mustard, and bring to the boil. Simmer for 2-3 minutes until the liquid has reduced by half.

Adjust seasoning to taste. Serve the pork steaks topped with the sautéed veg and any pan juices.

When The Sun asked non-Brits what annoyed them most about British habits, Jenny Bakken from Norway declared: “The constant questions of ‘how are you?’ and ‘how are you doing, love?’ always annoy me when I am travelling in English-speaking countries. I see it almost as an offence that they asked, but they’re not actually interested in my life or how I am doing.”

With the exception of Australia and New Zealand, Britain is one of very few places where Marmite is actually enjoyed. Reddit users have conducted their own opinion poll on the famous spread, with one Slovenian contributor commenting: “I remember my first experience with Marmite was so terrible.

The British are famous for their sarcastic turn of phrase, and this was recently demonstrated by a YouGov poll that asked a group of Brits and a group of Americans to interpret the meaning of various well-known expressions and phrases.

While most members of the British group took the expression “with the greatest respect” to have pretty much the opposite meaning, more than half of the American group took it at face value.

3. UK accents

One Reddit member, shocked at the way her British boyfriend spoke to his family members, wailed: “They’re so rude to each other. FOR FUN.”

According to the British Library, we have almost eighty different accents and dialects in the British Isles, so perhaps it’s not surprising that this was another frustration for overseas Reddit users. “So many accents. People fifteen minutes away having another accent,” one moaned.

Our love of tea Responding to Reddit’s “What about Britain baffles you?” challenge, another user stormed “Your obsession with tea!” Thankfully a helpful commentator stepped in quickly to explain the various uses for our national drink: “Welcome. Tea?” “Feeling emotional. Tea?” “Celebration. Tea?” “Period. Tea?” “It’s a tad nippy out. Tea?” “So upset you can’t talk. Tea?” “Just lost a limb. Tea?”

During our long and colourful history, British people have absorbed the best bits from several different cultures, so perhaps it’s not surprising that our melting pot of habits and customs causes bewilderment. It’s clear from the comments above that our culture is seen as eccentric, weird, confusing – even a tad annoying – but it’s equally clear that we Brits have no intention of changing our ways for anyone.

Health Your Health – Water Worries Ask most adults in the UK how much water they should be drinking and you’d be told “eight glasses a day.”

ut it’s a myth, believed to be a misinterpretation of some advice given in the 1940s. How can it be true when we are all different sizes, some of us are active and some are sedentary, and the weather may be sweltering or freezing?

Like sleepiness and hunger pangs, thirst is your body’s way of indicating it needs something and really not something to be afraid of.

a minimum, a written log by the fridge will help, but using one of the widely available hydration apps is a great discipline and makes it fun too.

IT’S THAT EASY? Yes and no. As we age, the thirst mechanism deteriorates so we can’t rely on that as our only indicator. Furthermore, when you are engrossed in some sedentary activity – watching TV, surfing the net – you may not be conscious that you haven’t had anything to drink for a while.

JUST PLAIN WATER THEN? Again, another urban myth is that only pure water counts and that simply isn’t true.

I NEED A CLUE. Dizziness or a headache may be a sign, but more reliable is the colour of your urine. If you realise it has been many hours since you last passed water and when you do go your pee is dark yellow, you are dehydrated.

If you don’t feel you are awake until you’ve had your first cuppa that’s not a bad thing. Despite being slightly diuretic, tea and coffee are both sources of fluid.

I PREFER A ROUTINE. A good start is to always take a glass of water to bed with you. This is your early morning reminder to start hydrating.

Your water intake doesn’t have to come from ‘water’.

That is, fruit and vegetables, soups, milk and soft drinks all have a high percentage of fluid in them.

During the rest of the day, if you can barely remember where you put your car keys, keeping track in your head is a strategy designed to fail. As
