Obviously, this is our September magazine, but it was prepared and printed during August so don’t expect big changes in this edition. Having said that, we are proud of our business and with great feedback from readers and advertisers alike, we are not planning a major overhaul for September either!
3www.harrogatelife.co.uk Contents
For almost every month of the year, life does feel like it runs at breakneck speed. There can be few amongst that haven’t said “Friday again already – where did that week go?” Then August comes around and for most of us life is just a bit less busy and time doesn’t seem to fly past at quite the same rate. This gives us the chance to be ‘present’ or to ‘live mindfully’: you are focused and engaged in the here and now, not distracted or mentally absent and you notice the passing of each day. This is an opportunity to reflect on what you love about your life and equally what you don’t. There’s a reason that September and January are the two main times of each year for us to implement big changes. From going on a diet and getting fit, to moving jobs or moving house, during August and at Christmas we’ve had a chance to think and plan.

In an exciting new partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), Sofas & Stuff have just launched an enchanting new furnishing fabric collection at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. RHS 22 takes its inspiration from from botanical artists and garden designers from the 17th through to the 20th centuries, using the archives of the RHS Lindley Collections, which houses one of the world’s finest collections of botanical drawings, paintings, and literature. The result is an elegant, intimate collection grounded in soft, natural tones, with rich pops of colour from the featured illustrated fruits and flowers, that will work across a wide range of interior design styles.
A more graphical and geometric interpretation of the rich RHS archive is delivered in two elegant fabrics based on Knot Garden designs from the early 17th century. Once again, the designs are rooted in soft, neutral grounds on both linen and cotton mix fabrics, and are presented in six nature-inspired tones ranging from inky blue through a palette of soft greens through to warm ochre and brown.
The fabrics can be used across any of Sofas & Stuff range of British handmade bespoke sofas, chairs, beds, footstools, and cushions or purchased as fabrics for curtains and blinds or other soft furnishing projects.
Why not visit their Harrogate showroom, and discuss your furniture needs over a complimentary cup of coffee or tea at The Clock Tower, Oakwood Park, Fountains Road, Bishop Thornton, Harrogate, HG3 3BF. You can call them directly on 01423 774020 or visit www.sofasandstuff.com.

Sofas & Stuff launch exciting new fabric collection in collaboration with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS)
The final fabric features a design from one of Britain’s best-known horticulturalists and garden designers, Gertrude Jekyll (1843 – 1932). An enchanting original sketch by Jekyll of a floral and leafy spray has been reproduced and repeated, creating a tumbling design across the fabric which feels both fresh and timelessly romantic.
“It was a real honour to be given the opportunity to delve into the world-renowned horticultural archives of this great British charity to select drawings and designs I could rework to create the first official fabric collection in collaboration with this iconic heritage organization. Our customers expect quality, diversity and richness in design, and we are certain that they will find it here in this beautiful new fabric range, which reflects our nation’s rich horticultural history and how much gardening and plants continue to enrich our lives.”
Sofas & Stuff’s Harrogate showroom, has friendly, expert design consultants on hand to help you choose the right sofa, chair or bed and fabric for your lifestyle. Whether you are inspired by timeless classic designs, updated for contemporary living, or are seeking the latest in interior trends, you are sure to find what you are hoping for among their extensive range of British bespoke, handmade furniture.

Three of the designs feature intricately detailed sketches from renowned botanical illustrators, William Hooker (1779 – 1832), Lydia Penrose (1787 – 1842) and Lilian Snelling (1879 – 1972). In each of these, individual sketches, drawings and paintings have been collated and artfully composed to create flowing designs that reflect the range and skills of the original artists. They have been printed onto beautiful tactile fabrics in soft natural tones and are suitable for all upholstery and soft furnishing purposes.

vine are particularly unruly and will literally undermine not just your flowers, but nearby buildings too! And the same goes for our animal friends. Sure, we may like to see a hedgehog, bird life, even the odd fox, but the best gardens are those that manage to protect the food supply present! My final piece of advice is to try to spread the love around your garden. Few of us have an endless budget with which to run riot in our green spaces, and it’s better to do a little at a time across the board, than blow it all in one part of the garden, leaving the rest of it looking forlorn and bereft.
Remember, no two gardens are the same, in much the same way that no two gardeners are the same, and you’re never going to get it right all of the time. The most important thing is to be organised and put the effort in – if you do that, the rewards will very often follow close behind.

There’s so much attention at the moment on the cost of petrol, the cost of our utilities, the rise in inflation, and it all seems like bad news. Yet sometimes we are all guilty of obsessing over the negative elements whilst failing to recognise good opportunities elsewhere; and if you’re looking for one sector where costs, pretty much consistently over time, have always decreased, then reach into your pocket and take out your trusty mobile phone. Telecommunications, broadband and connected industries continue to slash prices in what is a consumer-led price war, and the simple truth is many of us are still paying too much for our mobile phone contracts. So if you’re coughing more than about a tenner a month for your mobile phone contract – and by that I mean calls, texts and data, not the device itself – you’re probably in line to save some money.
It’s strange that mobile phones are such an integral part of our lives, yet many of us take for granted the competitiveness of the industry and don’t realise where we can be making savings.

In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at how, in a time of rising costs, we can make savings in other places.
Now usually when I suggest switching to a different mobile provider, people come back with concern over signal strength for, say, Lebara Mobile or PlusNet or whoever it is offering the best deal on data.
The reality though is that the communications network is run by four companies and four companies only – O2, EE, Vodafone and Three. Every other provider is piggybacking off their signal, so, in effect, it’s the same signal.
In an era of prices rising inexplicably across the board in other elements of our life, the time is now to start working the equation back in our favour, so have a look at your bill, survey the competition and start the conversation!
Finance Money on my mind... Lewis

It all comes down to looking for the best-priced SIM for your needs, because once you find the right deal, it’s really very easy nowadays to grab your PAC code and switch networks.
So by selecting one of the smaller companies all you’re doing is going with a virtual network, and everything else should remain the same. Obviously check before you sign up to see if 5G or tethering conditions are available, but beyond those things it’s the same line.

First, remember that the best school really depends on your individual child’s needs and preferences, and your own values. Your child’s personality may be better suited to a certain type of learning environment, or they may have talents, interests or aspirations that need catering for. If they have a learning disability, mental health condition or other challenges, you’ll want to choose a school that has plenty of experience in supporting similar children. In short, choose the school that can achieve the best outcome for your individual child, not just the one that boasts the best league table position. decide youR PRioRiTieS Make a list of everything you feel is important in a school. (However, do remember that the right school for your friend’s child may not be the best choice for your own child.) Reach out on forums and read reviews on The Good Schools Guide and other sites. The above steps should enable you to create a shortlist of possible schools. Request the prospectus for each one and have a good read of their websites. Don’t just look at the information prepared for prospective parents; read the existing parent and pupil communications, such as newsletters, social-media posts and notices. Does the school portray the values you’re looking for? Does it have good safeguarding policies in place? Can it offer your child the activities and learning environment they need? What support services are in place? What facilities does it have? Does the school have any links to useful outside organisations? Do you agree with the discipline policy?

A new therapy and coaching centre to support people across a wide range of issues has launched in Harrogate.
Gordon Bethell, Chairman of Leeds based marketing agency CreativeRace, and his wife Andrea are behind the venture, which was driven by Gordon’s own personal journey. With a passion for people psychology gained from his marketing background, Gordon’s own personal journey started with emotional coaching, leading to personal psychotherapy and experience of CBT, EMDR, NLP, Somatic Therapy and Transactional Analysis.
The Harlow is home to a dedicated, experienced and ethical team of therapists and coaches who are equipped to support individuals, couples and families along with businesses through times of challenge and change.
“For many years I kept my own personal journey discreet as I didn’t want clients and colleagues to know I needed support”, commented Gordon. “My whole experience gave me profound insight about my past and how it informed my behaviours. I recognised that therapy can be daunting and confusing for many and there is a critical need for quality triage or assessment so that clients are matched with the best approach.”
The Harlow will be running a series of workshops over the next few months that are for both practitioners and clients, with subjects ranging from parenting, transitioning from primary to secondary education and guiding young adults through their career choices through to professional workshops based around trauma, complex trauma, TA101 and broader psychotherapy-based training.
“For so many people right now, especially after the peak Covid experience, we see families dealing with extraordinary levels of change, particularly
The Harlow sets out to ensure that its practitioners are supported as well as its clients, in an environment where they can feel part of a broader team.

On the internet, there’s a bitter war raging. On the one side you have the Instant Pot infantry, who claim their cooker is the best kitchen gadget ever. And on the other there is the Air Fryer army, who say the same about air fryers. The truth? They’re both right, especially if your air fryer is also a multifunction oven. These devices can replace lots of kitchen appliances and pans, making even complex cooking easier, faster and a lot less messy too.
Foodi Max 15-in-1 functions, including pressure and slow cooking, air frying and even steam cooking, this really does replace a lot of different appliances. £249, ninjakitchen.co.uk
Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1
This smart oven is so good we bought one. It’s a largecapacity air fryer that’s big enough to use for the Sunday roast too, and it has dedicated features for cooking pizzas, baking and slow cooking. £249, sageappliances.com
This model takes the familiar Instant Pot pressure cooker and adds a swappable lid that turns it into an air fryer The 8L model looks rather like Darth Vader is sitting on your counter From £179, instantbrands.co.uk
An air fryer is a bit confusingly named, because really it’s a convection oven with a whopping great fan in it. It enables you to get similar results to deep frying without using all that oil, and while you can’t cook everything – wet batters such as fish batter or tempura just fall off – it’s really good for things like chips, fried chicken and other tasty treats.
Please mention Harrogate Life when responding to adverts
Many devices offer a combination of these features, so for example, the Sage Smart Oven Pro is an oven, an air fryer, a toaster, a pizza oven and a slow cooker, while the Ninja Foodi Max 15-in-1 SmartLid Multi-Cooker is a pressure cooker, air fryer, slow cooker, grill and steam oven with a built-in temperature sensor to deliver perfect results every time. Can they replace your existing appliances? We’d answer with a qualified yes. Multi-function cookers are incredibly handy and mean a lot less washing up, but they tend to excel at some things and only do okay with others –for example, an Instant Pot is a very good slow and pressure cooker, but the more expensive models’ air fryer lid is rather bulky and the results aren’t as good as a stand-alone air fryer, while Sage’s smart oven is a great air fryer and convection oven but a frustratingly slow toaster grill.

Can multi-cookers really replace lots of pots and pans?
The Instant Pot is a programmable electric pressure cooker. That means you can get slowcooked tenderness and flavour in a fraction of the time, making it ideal for soups, stews, chilli and much more. It’s great for steaming eggs and cooking rice too, and more recent models have an optional air-fryer attachment that does a pretty good job of frying.
This evolution of the original Instant Pot is a great buy: it’s easy to use, works really well and cooks all kinds of things (although there isn’t an air fryer lid). You can even get a Star Wars one. Ninja Foodi Mini 6-in-1 Multi-Cooker If an 8L multi-cooker is just too big, this 4.7L model offers similar features to the Foodi Max without the bulk. It’s ideal for couples and solo cooks. £149,

• 50ml (3 ½ tbsp) brandy, optional
The fearsome yet fantastically flamboyant Marco Pierre White relays his splendid Chicken Chasseur recipe.
2. Put the floured chicken pieces into the hot olive oil, skin side down, and fry without moving the pieces until golden-brown underneath. This should take around 8-10 minutes. Next, turn the chicken and fry until browned on the other side. Now finely chop the shallot and add to the frying pan, placing the shallot under the chicken so that the shallot cooks.
Ingredients (serves 4):
• 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 tbsp plain flour, for coating • Either 1 small chicken, cut into 8 pieces, or 8 chicken thighs, or 8 chicken breast fillets (skin on or off as preferred)
• 1 chicken stock pot
Marco Pierre White’s Chicken Chasseur
• A few sprigs of fresh parsley to garnish
• 2 tbsp parsley, chopped
• 600ml (2 1/2 cups) tomato juice (with an optional touch of gravy browning added in for extra colour if desired)
Recipe
3. If you are using brandy, pour it in around the edge of the pan so that it runs underneath the chicken. Cook for 2-3 minutes to allow the alcohol to evaporate. Add the wine in the same way, pouring it in around the sides of the pan, and cook for a further 2-3 minutes to allow the alcohol to evaporate and reduce the acidity. Next, add the chicken stock pot and the tomato juice (with gravy browning if using). Shake the pan to gently work it in and turn the chicken pieces until fully coated in the liquid. Bring slowly to the boil to allow the chicken stock pot to dissolve, then add the tarragon and simmer for 5 minutes.
• 100ml (7 tbsp) white wine
Method: 1. Gently heat half of the oil in a large, heavy-based frying pan. The oil should be hot, but not so hot that it scorches the floured chicken. Next, spread a layer of flour on a plate or a tray, and coat the chicken pieces evenly and thoroughly, shaking off any excess flour. This will add a golden-brown colour to the cooked chicken and help to thicken the sauce.
• 2 shallots, very finely chopped (100g or 3.5 oz)
5. Next, add in the parsley and diced tomato, shaking the pan to mix everything in well. Spoon the mushrooms, parsley and tomato over the chicken and garnish with sprigs of parsley, then serve.
• 2 tomatoes, skinned, deseeded and finely diced

4. While the chicken is simmering, take a separate frying pan and heat the remaining olive oil. Slice the mushrooms and add to the second pan, then fry them for 3-5 minutes.
• 250g (9oz) mushrooms,buttonfinely sliced • 3 tbsp tarragon, chopped

Architect and TV presenter George Clarke has laid the foundations for his debut live tour – preparing to share stories from a Life In Amazing Architecture both on and off screen as he travels the country. George Clarke’s Life In Amazing Architecture will visit 19 towns and cities this autumn, including a date at Harrogate Royal Hall on Tuesday, October 18, giving fans a glimpse behind the scenes of George’s hit TV shows, including The Restoration Man, Amazing Spaces and latest venture Remarkable Renovations. The live shows will include stunning audio-visual features, as George shares tales from his childhood, how he was inspired to pursue architecture, and how he stumbled into TV – as well as talking audiences through some of the architectural highlights of their local area. Tickets for George Clarke’s Life In Amazing Architecture are on sale now from www.ticketmaster. co.uk Announcing the tour, George said: “I’m just a storyteller, about people and about buildings. So to be going on tour, to be able to tell my story is amazing. I’m looking forward to doing 20 nights around the country, to meeting lots of people, having a bit of fun and enjoying that month on the road. I already felt like the luckiest boy in the world to do architecture, but to travel the country talking about architecture and my life – it’s off the scale amazing.”

Insurance policies require you to estimate how many miles you’ll be travelling in your car. Now, it’s worth thinking back to the previous year to determine just how much driving you’ve done. Overestimating your mileage can quickly ramp up your policy cost, so being as accurate as possible here can help shave off money.

While it can be tempting to let it automatically renew once your policy comes to an end, this could be adding hundreds of pounds to your insurance policy. So shop around. It’s not an option for everyone, but if you’re able to pay for your insurance policy in full rather than monthly then it’s well worth doing. By going down this route, you’ll avoid paying interest on your policy. Of course, if spreading your insurance policy over twelve months will avoid putting pressure on finances elsewhere, then this option is still valid and ensures that you’ve got cover. The same can be said for vehicle excise duty, commonly known as road tax. Though there’s the option to split it into smaller monthly payments, you’ll save money by paying it in full for a twelve month period. make SuRe youR caR iS WeLL-mainTained

Extra weight in your car uses up fuel, so have a good look around to see if there’s anything you could leave out. Additional coats, boxes and bags can all add to a car’s weight, so if you don’t need them – leave them out. Also, make sure that any roof racks or top boxes that aren’t being used are removed too. These have a huge impact on fuel economy and can quickly drive up how much fuel you’re using.
Your tyres have a big impact on your car’s fuel usage. These days, there are many ‘eco’ tyre options out there, which offer a lower rolling resistance that, in turn, help to improve your car’s fuel economy.

Using a premium fuel will increase the cost of filling up, so if you’re trying to keep costs down it’s a better idea to opt for regular fuel. Although premium fuels will be required by many sports and performance vehicles, regular petrol and diesel cars will run perfectly well on ‘standard’ fuel.
Fuel prices have spiked in recent months, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t look around for the cheapest fuel possible. Check your local area and make a note of the cheapest station, so that you can head for that one the next time you fill up. Don’t be tempted to drive out of your way for cheaper fuel, mind you, as this doesn’t work out cheaper in the long run. It’s also worth steering clear of motorway fuel unless you really need to – it comes at a hefty premium over more local stations.
Leave ouT any unWanTed
There’s no loss of grip or reduction in safety with these tyres, either. If you can, then you could notice a real difference in swapping to an eco-tyre.
If your tyres are in good condition, however, it’s a good idea to stick with them. Even so, you should make sure that they’re inflated to the correct pressures, as this can have a real impact on fuel usage.
An under-inflated tyre will cause your car to use more fuel, so make sure that they’re topped up with air regularly. You’ll find the manufacturer’s recommended pressures for your car in a panel behind the fuel filler flap, in the door shuts or in the vehicle’s handbook.
