1900 Spring technology is introduced into mattresses for the first time.
1905
Trade growth forces a move to a new factory in Leeds, with orders to supply the troops in the Boer War
1920
Continued expansion demands the acquisition of more factory premises. Harry and Billy Rhodes are appointed to run the company, with Miss Rhodes as secretary
1924
The new Nottingham factory is opened with AJ Ludlam as director in charge of sales and advertising.
1936
New opportunities arise for ship and hospital bedding for the Nottingham factory, further advancing the Somnus brand.
1940
Mattresses being produced by 600 people employed in six factories. Products are shipped worldwide.

Billy Rhodes names a bed “Somnus” after the Roman god of sleep and dreams.
The first mattresses bearing the Somnus name achieves record sales, matching the company’s increasing reputation for quality
1932
A further factory is opened in Manchester to keep up with ever increasing demand.
1933
Showrooms open in London, with emphasis on the high standards and quality. Billy Rhodes is appointed as chairman.
1954 Somnus mattresses specified for Her Majesty s new royal yacht ‘Britannia’.
1970
The business is rationalised to adapt to market forces.
William Rhodes establishes business as a flock dealer in Birstall, West Yorkshire.
William’s son, Joseph, joins his father making mattresses with flock.
Joseph’s sons, Harry and JW (Billy) enter the small, but growing business.
Somnus is bought by Harrison Spinks, one of the country’s most respected bedmakers.

The Somnus farm is purchased raise sheep using their fleeces blends of 100% natural upholstery
2010
A new collection is launched with the technologically advanced Sensa Pocket Plus. Yorkshire Dales Eco wool produced on the Somnus farm reinforces the company’s policy of using the highest quality materials sourced locally

Launch of the Somnus national advertising campaigns.

Developed 4K spring technology and introduced weaving looms.

Somnus celebrates its 175th birthday
2017
In the 1950’s Somnus was first commissioned to supply Her Majesty s Yacht Royal Britannia with luxury mattresses, in 2017 Somnus launched their limited edition mattress The Royal Britannia to mark 65 years since the Royal Britannia first set sail.
2021
All Somnus mattresses become glue free, foam free, and FR chemical treatment free.
Harrison Spinks partner with British Wool as part of their Traceable Wool Scheme, tracing the wool in our beds from the sheep to the shop floor.
2018
Two Queen s Awards for Enterprise are awarded, one for Innovation and one for International Trade.
2012 In celebration of HM Queen Elizabeth II s Diamond Jubilee a limited edition range of beds is created. collections are launched Pocket Spring system.
