Dr. Tongprasert offers interventional pain management and treats several conditions, including neuropathy, nerve entrapment, and cancer pain. Dr. Tongprasert offers epidurals, bursa injections, nerve block, and acupuncture.

2017 Annual Report Welcome to the Harrison County Hospital 2017 Annual Report! We appreciate your ongoing support of HCH and our efforts to serve this community. We celebrated our 10th anniversary in the “new” $51M Hospital in February 2018.

In many ways, the past decade has been good for our organization. Our facilities remain first rate! We continue to get compliments about the aesthetics, tranquility, and functionality of the new campus. Recently, we have been on a significant equipment replacement course, per our ongoing commitment to stay up to date with medical technology.

All with the end goal to better serve our patients!

We continue to deliver health services that yield positive patient satisfaction. To that end, HCH was designated a CMS Medicare Four Star Hospital for quality health services and patient satisfaction in both 2015 and 2016. The Four Star award puts us in excellent standing compared to all hospitals nationally for quality and customer service.

Defying industry trends, HCH continues to experience service volume growth, including the Physician Practices, After Hours Care Clinic, ER, OB, Surgery, EMS, and Inpatients.

To highlight updated key Hospital data and accomplishments, I offer the following: ■ HCH is a County owned Critical Access Hospital that opened in 1950 through the Federal Hill Burton program. In 2017, the Hospital again achieved CMS “deemed status” HFAP accreditation for three years. Our ongoing mission is to develop services and programs that serve the community’s health needs, and to generate local economic activity and benefits.

■ The Hospital struggled financially for most of its first 40 years, as accumulated earnings did not become positive until 1988. To better serve patients, the Atwood St. facilities were periodically updated, until the current Hospital Dr. campus opened in 2008.

■ Since the mid-1980s, the Hospital has operated with positive financials for most years. With the 2008 building project, componentized depreciation accounting was used to more accurately reflect depreciation expenses. As accelerated depreciation negatively affected accrual profits, HCH has generated cash flows well in excess of debt covenants. Cash flows were a positive $3M in 2014, $2.5M in 2015, $4.8M in 2016, and $1.7M in 2017. In addition, existing debt on the 2008 building project is currently under $7M. ■ HCH continues to experience utilization and revenue growth, registering about 135,000 patients in 2017. The newly enhanced 24/7 full-time onsite Hospitalist program continues to serve larger inpatient volumes. In 2017, the ER had nearly17K patient visits, and the HCH owned Provider Clinics had approximately 62K visits.

■ Industry-wide, hospital revenue write-offs yielding lower collections are a substantial problem, especially given significantly increasing hospital expenses. In 2017, the Hospital provided $7M of indigent care to the community. HCH’s 2017 Medicare revenue write-offs were $45M and the Medicaid write-offs were $24M. ■ HCH currently employs about 630 individuals (450 FTEs) with a 2017 payroll of nearly $32M. There are now more than 200 providers on the Medical Staff, and the Hospital employs more than 30 full-time physicians and providers.

■ Recognizing the benefits of collaboration, HCH and Norton have enjoyed an affiliation since 1981. The affiliation’s primary goal is to serve HCH’s population by providing services locally; then creating an efficient specialty care referral process. These locally provided services include the Norton Cancer Institute (cancer and hematology services), Norton Cardiology and practice management coverage.

■ HCH has contractually managed the Harrison County EMS since 1978.

Total EMS runs were 7000 in 2017. Proudly, EMS averages in the 90 percentile for patient satisfaction, employs ~47 FTEs, and has won more than 70 State EMS awards over the past 35 years.

In closing, after 29 years as the Harrison County Hospital CEO, I remain humbled by and very proud of the wonderful things we do to help people every day. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the many individuals, both past and present, who have contributed so much to HCH’s success over the past 68 years! Sadly, we lost former Trustee Fred Owen and Trustee Carl Duley in 2017. Both were long tenured Trustees that served HCH well and will be missed.

Operating a hospital in today’s environment is highly complex, and requires many remarkable people working together to provide quality health services. To that end, we remain committed to building on HCH’s numerous assets…including modern patient centered facilities, our skilled and compassionate staff, past operational successes and stability, the collaborative benefits of our Norton affiliation, and a HCH mission driven commitment to appropriately provide health services to our patients!

Why is the Harrison County Hospital Foundation Important?

The Harrison County Hospital Foundation was established in 1985 to enhance the Hospital’s ability to serve the people of our community. Since our inception, we have been busy supporting health education efforts in order to improve the health and wellness of those in our community.

In 2002, the HCH Foundation began an active campaign to take our many activities to the public with the goal of increasing awareness and support for our Foundation, resulting in even more ways to positively influence our community health. We have been busy!

Each year, our physicians and employees donate their time to provide free sports physicals for our students. We offer free blood sugar and cholesterol testing at our Community Health Screens. We host an Annual Health Fair, offer Diabetes Education, free Childbirth Education and Siblings classes, and scholarships to students. We also provide education to our employees, patients, and the public. We support women’s programs with free bone density screenings and assist uninsured patients with diagnostic testing support and medications.

We also provide free comfort dolls to our pediatric patients.

All of this is because our community supports the Harrison County Hospital Foundation!

Harrison County Hospital Cancer Registry Cancer is a reportable disease in all 50 states of the nation and in many nations of the world. The information and statistics gathered regarding cancer is then compiled and reported to national cancer organizations such as the National Cancer Institute where this information is used for research for causes and treatment of the disease.

Hospital based Cancer Registries report all newly diagnosed cases of cancer each year to the State Central Database where multiple cancer records are edited and compiled to forward the data to the national database. In 2009, Harrison County Hospital started a hospital based Cancer Registry to meet this reporting requirement.

The Cancer Registry is not only required to report newly diagnosed cases of cancer, but also maintains and supports Cancer Committee meetings that govern and direct the cancer program and activities for the hospital.

The registry also maintains and supports Multidisciplinary Tumor Conferences where physicians from multiple disciplines such as Family Medicine, Diagnostic Radiology, Surgery, Pathology, Medical Oncology, and specialists in the areas of Physical Medicine, Dietary, and Discharge Planning discuss actual patient treatment planning and coordinate care for patients undergoing cancer treatment.

Once a cancer diagnosis is made, the Cancer Registry is required to maintain a lifetime following of that patient. Once a year the registry is required to contact the patient’s physician or the patient themselve to ensure that the patient is receiving the necessary medical care for their disease, as well as monitor their progress from the treatment/treatments they are either receiving or have received.

Harrison County Hospital Rehabilitation Services Share Concussion Safety Information for Parents and Grandparents What Is A Concussion?

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury. Concussions are caused by a bump or blow to the head. Even a “ding,” “getting your bell rung,” or what seems to be a mild bump or blow to the head can be serious. You can’t see a concussion. Signs and symptoms of concussion can show up right after the injury or may not appear or be noticed until days or weeks after the injury. If your child reports any symptoms of concussion, or if you notice the symptoms yourself, seek medical attention right away.

What Are The Signs And Symptoms Of Concussion?

If your child has experienced a bump or blow to the head during a game or practice, look for any of the following signs of a concussion: Symptoms Reported By Athlete: • Headache or “pressure” in head • Nausea or vomiting • Balance problems or dizziness • Double or blurry vision • Sensitivity to light • Sensitivity to noise • Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy, or groggy • Concentration or memory problems • Confusion • Just not “feeling right” or is “feeling down” Signs Observed By Parents/Guardians: • Appears dazed or stunned • Is confused about assignment or position • Forgets an instruction • Is unsure of game, score, or opponent • Moves clumsily • Answers questions slowly • Loses consciousness (even briefly) • Shows mood, behavior, or personality changes

Danger Signs Be alert for symptoms that worsen over time. Your child or teen should be seen in an emergency department right away if she/he has: • One pupil (the black part in the middle of the eye) larger than the other • Drowsiness or cannot be awakened • A headache that gets worse and does not go away • Weakness, numbness, or decreased coordination • Repeated vomiting or nausea • Slurred speech • Convulsions or seizures • Difficulty recognizing people or places • Increasing confusion, restlessness, or agitation • Unusual behavior • Loss of consciousness (even a brief loss of consciousness should be taken seriously)

How Can You Help Your Child Prevent A Concussion Or Other Serious Brain Injury?

• Ensure that they follow their coach’s rules for safety and the rules of the sport.

• Encourage them to practice good sportsmanship at all times.

• Make sure they wear the right protective equipment for their activity.

Protective equipment should fit properly and be well maintained.

• Wearing a helmet is a must to reduce the risk of a serious brain injury or skull fracture.

• However, helmets are not designed to prevent concussions. There is no “concussion-proof” helmet. So, even with a helmet, it is important for kids and teens to avoid hits to the head.

How Can I Help My Child Return To School Safely After A Concussion?

Children and teens who return to school after a concussion may need to:

Take rest breaks as needed Spend fewer hours at school Be given more time to take tests or complete assignments Receive help with schoolwork Reduce time spent reading, writing, or on the computer

Talk with your child’s teachers, school nurse, coach, speech-language pathologist, or counselor about your child’s concussion and symptoms.

As your child’s symptoms decrease, the extra help or support can be removed gradually.

What Should You Do If You Think Your Child Has A Concussion?

1. Seek Medical Attention Right Away A health care professional will be able to decide how serious the concussion is and when it is safe for your child to return to regular activities, including sports.

2. Keep Your Child Out Of Play Concussions take time to heal. Don’t let your child return to play the day of the injury and until a healthcare professional says it’s OK. Children who return to play too soon – while the brain is still healing – risk a greater chance of having a second concussion. Repeat or later

concussions can be very serious. They can cause permanent brain damage, affecting your child for a lifetime.

3. Tell Your Child’s Coach About Any Previous Concussion Coaches should know if your child had a previous concussion. Your child’s coach may not know about a concussion your child received in another sport or activity unless you tell the coach.

Seasonal Recipe Spring is finally here. Before the weather turns hot, sheet pan meals can be a handy way to get a nutritious meal on the table. Feel free to change up the vegetables to what is in season.

INGREDIENTS

• Cooking spray • 1 ½ T. lower sodium soy sauce

• 2 ½ cups butternut squash, peeled & cubed (purchase prepared to save time)

• 3 T. olive oil, divided

• 1 lb. Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved

• 1 T. honey

• ½ t. iodized salt

• 1 T. lime juice

• ½ t. freshly ground black pepper

• 2 cloves garlic, minced, divided

• ¼ t. smoked paprika

• 1 t. freshly grated ginger

• 1 T. sliced green onions, optional

• 4 (5 oz) salmon or other fish fillets

• 1 t. sesame seeds, optional

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 400º F. Coat a 13x18 sheet pan with spray. Combine soy sauce, 1 T. oil, honey, lime juice, 1 clove garlic, and ginger in bowl. Add salmon to marinate and cover with sauce. Set aside.

In a bowl, combine rest of oil, garlic, squash, sprouts, salt, pepper & paprika. Toss to coat. Spread on baking sheet; do not overcrowd. Bake at 400º for 12 minutes. Then stir vegetables and push to edges of pan, creating open area.

Place marinated salmon in open center and pour over any leftover sauce. Bake at 400º for 15 more minutes. Top salmon with green onion and sesame seeds, if desired.

Serve with the vegetables.
