MAY 2018 | Inspiring Creativity Through the Arts
HAA Summer FAQ’s:
As Summer approaches and the weather FINALLY warms up, now is the time when HAA receives a lot of questions regarding lessons during LPS’ summer break. Check out the answers to our most frequently asked questions. Q: Does HAA have lessons throughout summer? A: Yes! Lessons occur year-round at HAA including during the summer months. We also have group classes and camps occurring during the summer. To sign up for a summer class, click HERE. Please note, we are CLOSED the following days: May 28th (Memorial Day) & July 2 - July 7th (4th of July break). Be sure to check out our free make-up classes that are available for students to attend as well! Q: Do instructors’ schedules change in the summer? A: Not necessarily. Unless the office has notified you of a change, your teacher’s schedule will remain the same. If you would like to see if your instructor has different availability in the summer please check with the front desk. Note that if you switch time slots, you are not guaranteed your original time slot once the school year starts back up again. Q: My family is taking a vacation and will be gone for a couple of weeks during the summer. Can my student take a break and then come back once we are back in town? A: Yes. However, if you would like to hold your same time for when you return, it is best to continue paying for lessons during your absence. You can also submit a “Leave of Absence” form that will take you off of the schedule and ensure you do not get charged for the time that you are gone. Please note that the “Leave of Absence” form must be submitted at least 30 days prior, and when you return you will be charged an administrative fee ($20) upon registration. Your time slot is not guaranteed to be available when you return if you submit a “Leave of Absence.” Q: I know there is a Fall Recital and a Spring Recital...but is there a Summer Recital? A: There sure is! The Summer Recital is our “Anything Goes” Recital. Do you have a special talent that you want to share with your HAA Family? Maybe you can do special hula-hoop tricks? Or do spot-on impersonations? Anything goes at the “Anything Goes” recital and we want to see what you or your student have hidden up your sleeves! This years’ “Anything Goes” Recital will be on July 21st. Be sure to look out for email communication to sign up for the summer recital! Still have questions? Feel free to call us at 402-423-7121 or send an email to Michaela at office@harrisacademyofthearts.com with any other questions you may have!

April 2018 RECAP On Saturday, April 7th we had the pleasure of being a vendor at the Early Childhood Celebration hosted by the Lincoln Chapter of the Nebraska Association for the Education of Young Children. There were games and music galore! We brought our musical bingo - and participants listened for different recognizable sounds while trying to score the oh-so-coveted BINGO!
On April 15th, students and their families put on their dancing shoes for a night with UNL’s Big Red Singers. The Big Red Singers is an ensemble featuring outstanding performers working together to create an entertaining, high-energy, fully choreographed show. The repertoire is chosen from a wide variety of popular and Broadway music. It was a SPECTACULAR event!
Saturday, April 21st was LMTA’s District Music Festival at Nebraska Wesleyan University. The halls were filled with music as students practiced and performed from 8am to 5pm. Students prepared enough to earn a rating of 1+, 1, and 1- were rewarded with medals and the opportunity to perform in an Honors Recital! Congratulations to all of the students that performed for Festival - it’s a great experience and we are proud of each and every one of you!

PET OF THE MONTH: OLLIE Meet Ollie, Kara Eddy’s (cello, piano & KM instructor) big fat crazy cat. Ollie is almost 2 years old. He was found on the side of the road with a broken leg when he was 6 weeks old. He isn’t so little anymore though-16 pounds! He loves running around the house with his toys, tearing up furniture, eating ALL of the food and terrorizing Kara’s other 15 year old cat, Scout. Want to honor your pet here? Email

QUICK TIPS
Joy, violin and viola instructor:
One of my favorite practice tips is from Itzhak Perlman: “If you practice something slowly, you forget it slowly. If you practice something fast, you forget it fast.” Remember that learning music is not a race. Give yourself time and enjoy the little steps along the way.
John; guitar and brass instructor: “Stuck on a new piece of music and getting discouraged by the tricky parts? First, relax, take a breath, and set it down. Come back to it after a short break to clear your head and come back with a fresh perspective. Second, go back in your materials and review exercises leading up to the piece. It’s good to play things that you’ve done before, and there might be aspects of those pieces that you’ll see in the tricky parts of the new piece. Finally, try practicing in weird ways! Can you play the long note runs backwards? Can you play the intricate rhythms on a single note? Can you play with a metronome? What if the metronome is muted on every count except one? There are so many ways to work on a piece in different ways, and that will give you a whole new outlook on the music. Just remember; it’s not hard, it’s just new.”
New Students: Join us in welcoming new HAA students!

KLAIRE JOHNSTON
Meet our May Student of the Month, Klaire! She takes guitar lessons with John Fucinaro, who nominated her for Student of the Month, “For her constant hard work and fantastic attitude. She impresses me week after week with her great playing. She plays well above where her age would suggest, and it is truly a pleasure to teach her.” Klaire loves her lessons with John because he makes playing fun! Her favorite thing about playing guitar right now is learning and playing chords, and her favorite song to practice is “Daisy Bell.” When she isn’t busy at her lessons here at Harris Academy of the Arts or rockin’ out on her guitar at home to practice, she loves playing and watching sports! Especially basketball – her favorite player is Lebron James. We can’t forget about the great state of Nebraska - Klaire is also a HUGE Nebraska football and basketball fan: GO BIG RED! We are so proud of all that Klaire has accomplished in her time at Harris Academy of the Arts and can’t wait to continue watching her become an amazing guitar player. Thank you for being part of our musical family, Klaire!
TEACHER OF THE MONTH
SYDNEY TIMMONS
Sydney has been with HAA since April 2015. She holds a degree in Vocal Performance from Wheaton College Conservatory of Music near Chicago, Illinois. As a vocalist and instrumentalist, Sydney enjoys a wide variety of musical genres and styles, including music theater, opera, and art song. Having a foundation in instrumental music has proven to be invaluable as a vocalist, and she believes that every vocalist should also play an instrument. Sydney values the one-on-one connections she is able to make with her students, and strives to instill a life-long love of music in every one of her students. Sydney enjoys working with students with special needs, especially those with dyslexia and on the autism spectrum.
