New Students

NOVEMBER 2017 RECAP On November 15th, students had the opportunity to tour and see a demonstration of The Violin Shop in Lincoln. Luthier (a violin maker/repairer), David Frederick, showed students how each part of the violin is made and even gave students a curled ribbon of wood from an in-progress violin! Students were amazed to find out that it takes over 150 hours to make a violin from scratch!

Welcoming in all of our new November 2017 students! EMILY HELLER (JUNE 2017) CHRISTINE JACKSON GRAHAM KIECHEL ANELISE LAMBERT MANDA DILLASHAW PEPPER WEESNER

On November 9th, HAA professional musicians had the chance to play at Wedding Crash 2017. Wedding Crash is a event put on by Wilderness Ridge that is a wedding unlike any other! A couple was treated to an “all-expenses” paid wedding by different vendors around Lincoln while the guests, including family, friends, and recently engaged couples, had the opportunity to look for vendors for their upcoming weddings. The ceremony was beautiful and we had such a great time working with the couple and meeting all of the newly-engaged wedding crashers!

Thank you to all that participated this year!

Over 200 students performed this year at the Fall 2017 Recital on November 10th and November 11. Students performed on a variety of instruments from trombone to electric guitar! Students even had the chance to observe HAA instructors perform as well. Everyone did FANTASTIC and should be so proud of all they have acoomplished!

December Holiday Music

QUICK TIPS Joy Holz, violin & viola instructor: “When practicing, be analytical. Ask yourself: what is easy about the music you are practicing? What is challenging? What do you think makes the challenging sections difficult? Be as specific as you can. Once you have an idea of what is causing the problem, try practicing in these ways. 1) Simplify the passage by focusing on one element at a time. Example: If the rhythm is incorrect, count and clap it a few times. If the notes are wrong, take out the rhythm and just focus on playing the correct pitch. 2) Practice slowly. 3) Sing or hum the music, and then play it with your instrument.”

There are so many different holidays celebrated in the month of December. Here are just a few and popular songs for each holiday. Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadelupe (Mexican)

Hanukkah (Jewish)

Cantico De Zacarias (Canticle of Zachariah) Dios te Salva, Maria de America (Hail Mary America)

Al Hanisim Hanukkah O Hanukkah Mi Yimalel (Who Can Retell?) Sivivon Sov Sov Sov

Spencer Perkins, piano and composition instructor: “Be very disciplined with the tempos you take during practice time. While many times it is more “entertaining” to take a quicker tempo, this can be counterproductive to you preparation of the piece. When preparing a piece, always choose a tempo that can be maintained, with accurate notes and rhythms. Speed will come as you become more familiar with the piece.”

Las Aparciones Guadalupanas (The Guadalupan Apparitions)

Las MaÑanitas (The Mexican Birthday Song)

Carol of the Bells

Habari Gani (What’s the News)

A NOTE FROM MICHAELA, COMMUNICATIONS/RELATIONS MANAGER Though we’ve been spoiled with some pretty mild weather lately, winter is definitely right around the corner! Last month we had our Fall Student Recital, and what an amazing weekend it was. Thank you to all of our student performers and families that attended as an audience – we’re so glad to share the love of music with each and every one of you. It’s around this time that holiday music begins to echo through the halls at Harris Academy of the Arts – these pieces are great ways to stay in-

spired past practicing for recitals. This month, I challenge you to the following: whip up some hot cocoa, pop some popcorn, bundle up in some comfy pajamas, and put on a home-performance for your families featuring your favorite holiday pieces! Thank you so much for being a part of our musical family here at the studio. We love hearing about exciting news and musical milestones – so don’t forget share with us so we can celebrate with you! Have a cool December! - Michaela
