MARCH 2018 RECAP On March 13th, HAA students and their families had the opportunity to see the UNL Symphony Orchestra perform at UNL’s Kimball Hall! The UNL Symphony Orchestra consists of UNL students who perform a wide variety of repertoire including chamber, symphonic, and operatic masterworks. March 13th was student soloist night and included soloists in marimba, french horn, and piano. It sure was a night to remember! As many of you know, Harris Academy of the Arts acquired more space to expand at the end of 2017. Over Spring Break office administration were busy moving into the upstairs portion of the building. Upstairs is now the new home to the HAA filing system, new and improved music library, and Vicki Harris’ (HAA Director) much deserved large office space. All of this change will free up some space for more lessons and storage downstairs. You may have noticed a few changes around the halls of HAA. Right when you walk in you’ll notice a new camera display that rotates through all of the studio cameras. You’ll also notice the new studio doors. Each door has a glass panel. Thank you to students and parents for your patience as we continue to make Harris Academy of the Arts the best place to be. We take pride in providing a safe learning environment for our students and will continually do so with the support of our HAA family.

Recital Tips

QUICK TIPS Mai Butler, Piano Instructor:

“Here is what I tell my piano students to succeed in music lessons: 1) Set a daily goal and task. Practice at least 20 minutes for younger students. 2) Practice hard sections over and over first until there are no mistakes. If it is too hard, you should practice hands separately. When you master the hard sections, move on to the next hard sections. Practice these sections daily. 3) Practice slowly with a steady beat. 4)Participate in musical festivals, competitions, recitals, and any other performance opportunity. 5) Record your playing. 6) Try to be your own teacher. Think first before you move your fingers; find your problems and their solutions. 7) Go to concerts & recitals.”

Vicki Harris, Piano/Violin Instructor, HAA Director

“Practicing music is much like putting together a puzzle. Let’s say your puzzle has five hundred pieces. There is no way you can put an entire puzzle together just like that. So, I like to start with the straight lines around the edge of the puzzle (the melody line of your piece). Then I work on sorting out the puzzle by putting same colors together such as the leaves of the tree or the black and white spots of the cow (e.g., a phrase, theme, etc.). Next, there might be a whole lot of sky with lots of blues and grays. This area takes a little more time so I work on sections vs. trying to do the entire sky at once. This is much like your musical selection – there are several parts that need special work. Work on small sections, while spending time on the details. Once the smaller sections are coming together you can begin to group them together to make bigger sections. By taking your time and slowly adding the next section, you’ll find you eventually will have a beautiful, big puzzle (musical selection) all put together.”

Don’t fret; there’s absolutely no need to panic. Here are a few recital tips & tricks from HAA students and teachers. “Take deep breaths.” “Calm down, there’s nothing to worry about.”

You may ask yourself, is it just me? Nope, you’re definitely not alone. Famous musicians such as Arthur Rubinstein and Luciano Pavarotti were also known to struggle with performance anxiety. Think about what your favorite type of relaxation is when you are feeling nervous. Maybe it’s relaxing with your pet, reading a book, exercising, or watching your favorite TV show. Before your performance, try one of those relaxation activities to clear your head space of any nerves. “Focus on your music piece, not the audience.” “Imagine you are playing at home.” Pretend it’s just you and the music. At this point you have seen the music hundreds of times and it hasn’t changed… you got this! If you mess up during your piece, that’s okay! Shake it off and get right back into it. More than likely only you heard your mistake and the audience didn’t even notice! While playing, think about how the music makes you feel and that feeling will be transferred to the audience. And last but not least, as a HAA student once said… “Don’t worry about anything. If you need to, pretend the audience is in their underwear!” Happy Recital to all of our HAA students!

A NOTE FROM MICHAELA, COMMUNICATIONS/ RELATIONS MANAGER Spring is here and the 2018 Spring Student Recital is right around the corner! I wanted to take a moment and remind students of their commitment to the recital. Sometimes a piece is harder than we think it is going to be, the thought of performing in front of an audience causes anxiety, and many other things that make us not want to perform. Or, sometimes practicing can become boring or even overwhelming with everything else going on. The easy thing to do would be waltzing up to the front

desk and declaring you aren’t going to perform – but that’s TOO easy and we’ll definitely try to talk you into performing anyway! Remember, you’ve made a commitment to us here at the studio, and to your family and friends who are greatly looking forward to seeing you perform – so focus on why you signed up in the first place, stick with it, and take a bow at the end of your awesome performance! -Michaela

District Festival - Tips & Pointers #3 For those students who take lessons from LMTA teachers, District Festival will be here before you know it! There are three components to festival: performance, theory, and ear training. Each month leading up to festival, we have highlighted one component and give tips and pointers to help you or your student nail their performance! District Festival is April 21st and here is our last tip for you to succeed at District!

EAR TRAINING Look for the room your respective level. Ear training for the “A” levels is in a smaller room within the BIG theory room. “B” Level testing is located in on the lower floor. Look for signs or ask volunteers for assistance. When you enter, they will ask for your festival number. You will be given an ear training test sheet and a pencil. All students of the SAME level will be in the room at once (could be just you, or several students). The volunteer will push play (on the cassette recorder) and simply, you follow the instructions provided through the test. Each example will be played twice. This portion will take no longer than 10 minutes. At the end of the test, you will hand in your test and pencil and leave the room.
