IS IT DURABLE? Stand out in a throw-away society by designing products that stand up to the task.

Durable products are part of responsible design, as they are less likely to fill up landfills.

No product exists in a vacuum. Design for multiple contexts, purposes, and functions. The result are innovative, useful products that solve multiple problems.

Designing for multifunctionality means that one product takes the place of many, which is not only economical, but green.

ULTIFUNCTIONAL?

IS IT REPAIRABLE? In responsible design, durability alone isn’t enough, your products should also be repairable. Not only does this add value to the product, it extends its life and keeps it out of landfills.

DOES IT FIT OUR CUST Understand who you are designing for. What do they do? What do they need? What is important to them?

IS IT EASY TO CAR A product’s value is entwined with it’s maintenance, the lower the maintenance the more a person gets out of using the product. Design for durable ease.

IS IT AS SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE? Elegant solutions tend to be the most simple.

Keep functionality in mind at all times, and design with purpose to arrive at straightforward solutions.

NE SIMPLE? “Good design is as little design as possible.”

ARE WE JUST CHASING FASHION?

It’s easy to follow fads in design. However, fast fashion and trends are quickly dated and thrown out. Take your time and create designs with staying power.

ARE WE DESIGNING FOR OUR CORE CUSTOMERS? Customers exist in concentric circles. Design for the people closest to your company’s heart.

DOES IT CAUSE A UNNECESSARY HAR

Ask yourself “what is the consequence of this product?”

What materials are needed, how does it impact the environment to make, pack, and ship? How does it affect local communities?

Find solutions before creating problems.

IS IT INNOVATION INVENTION? Invention is a lofty goal. Innovatation improves what already exists, taking our ideas further and exploring them more thoroughly.

How can you make something better? Greener, more functional, more inclusive?

ANY RM? DOES IT HAVE ANY ADDED VALUE? Value extends beyond the function of a product. Does it bring joy to its user? Does the product become “well loved” with age or simply fall apart?

IS IT AUTHENTIC? Is your design true to it’s purpose and function? Health foods in environmentally damaging packaging, running shoes that don’t hold up to running; these are examples of unauthentic design.

Create authentically.

IS IT BEAUTIFUL? Beauty isn’t found in trends. Strive to create products and designs that were beautiful yesterday, and will continue to be beautiful tomorrow, and years to come.
