The Emancipation Proclamation: From Three-Fifths Human to Second Class Citizenship

W

hen I first became active in the Civil Rights Movement as a teenager in Youngstown, Ohio, January 1st was always a very important day in the Black community — not because it was the first day of a new year, but it was Emancipation Day. Every year the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance and the local Chapter of the NAACP would host a major program commemorating the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. This was celebrated as a momentous occasion because with a stroke of a pen, President Lincoln freed enslaved Africans from bondage. Certainly a just cause for celebration! What was never noted in the Emancipation Day Programs was that the Proclamation did not “free” all of the 4 million enslaved Africans.

like Butler and radical Republicans like Congressman Thaddeus Stephens urged Lincoln to formally/officially free the enslaved Africans to strike a devastating blow to the economy of the South and, equally important, recruit them as soldiers to bolster the fortunes of an increasingly unpopular war in the North (by some estimates, more than 200,000 Blacks joined the Union Army). Accordingly, Lincoln carefully crafted a Proclamation which would have maximum economic and military impact. It freed enslaved Africans in those states that were in “rebellion” against the Union. If you were a slave in a state which had not seceded or declared war against the union — Missouri, Kentucky, Delaware or Maryland — you were still a slave after the pronouncement of the Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation left nearly a million Africans in bondage.

He essentially viewed enslaved Africans as unfortunate captives who should be “emancipated” from bondage and protected from being oppressed by superior beings. This view was shared by most “abolitionists” of the day. It’s similar to the way animal rights activists view cats and dogs. This disposition was also consistent with the infamous 3/5 Compromise which the drafters of the Constitution adopted to persuade the southern slaveholding states to join the new Federal Government. The Compromise provided that enslaved Africans, the chattel/property of southerners, could be counted as 3/5 of a person/human being for the purpose of determining taxation and representation in the House of Representatives. It was also consistent with the Dred Scott Decision which decreed that enslaved Africans were “private property” and therefore could not be granted citizenship.

being to “second class citizenship.” Deeply ingrained perceptions of Africans as chattel and inferior human beings persisted, thereby severely limiting the definition of “emancipation” for formerly enslaved Africans in the south and their “quasi-free” Black kin in the North.

At the end of the Civil War, there were 4.5 million Africans in America, 4 million formerly enslaved Africans in the South and 500,000 “free Blacks” mostly in the North. For the most part, the 4 million Blacks in the South were woefully unprepared for their new found “freedom.” And, while the Freedman’s Bureau and other programs were put in place to provide training for the formerly enslaved Africans to enter society, they were insufficient in scale and largely ineffective. But, the greatest handicap of all was the failure of the federal government to provide the “forty acres and a mule” which would have given them a stake in the American Capitalist political economy. Not only were reparations repealed, as Claud Anderson documents in his brilliant treatise Black Labor White Wealth, Blacks were deprived of an opportunity to participate in the Homestead Act and other “affirmative action” programs which benefited Euroethnic farmers and major business interests like the railroads. As a consequence, the vast majority of formerly enslaved Africans were forced into a new form of peonage/quasislavery as sharecroppers, tenant farmers and agricultural laborers where it was virtually impossible to achieve selfsufficiency or accumulate wealth.

Moreover, under southern Jim Crow Laws, certain jobs in the non-agriculture sector were “set aside” for Whites and in all instances Whites were paid more

While many in White America and some Blacks would like to dismiss these factors as irrelevant to the current crises facing Africans in America, it is impossible to understand the wealth gap between Blacks and Whites and the relative underdevelopment of Black America without acknowledging this history. From the 3/5 Compromise to the Emancipation Proclamation, Reconstruction Amendments and Civil Rights Acts of the 60’s, Africans in America have suffered from the perception of inferiority and deprived of access and opportunities which severely limited our progress as “second class citizens.” It is an inescapable conclusion that the State of Emergency in Black America is in large measure due to ongoing intergenerational deficits resulting from our treatment as less than full citizens in these United States of America. As we seek to heal our families and communities, we must be sober about the fact that even with a Black man in the White House, there is a significant minority of Whites who still view Blacks as less than equal. More importantly, institutional/structural racism de facto remains a barrier to achieving full civil and human rights in this country. Faced with this reality, Africans in America must mobilize our internal capacity/power to shatter the psycho-cultural, economic and political walls of white supremacy once and for all. “We who believe in freedom cannot rest until we’ve won!”

At a time when states are still struggling to balance their budgets post-recession and increase funding on education and health care, the U.S. will spend $40 billion on incarceration this year alone, according to the National Conference of State Legislators.

There are many broad societal arguments to be made about changing sentencing guidelines, but take emotions out of it—as economists often do—and it may be easier to see, from a dollars and cents perspective, which prisoners it might make the most economic sense to set free.

To cope with the cost, you could argue—as some have—that the country should consider releasing a portion of the prison population (or not put them there in the first place) to reduce overcrowding and to save money. Recently, two girls ages 13 and 14 were sitting in a van at 11:34 p.m. in the 7500 block of South Union in the Auburn Gresham community when two men walked up and open fire hitting the girls who are in critical condition.

Some blame the shootings on the lack of jobs and other resources needed to keep the youth occupied in a positive way.

Others blame the lack of mental health services especially given the closure of mental health clinics by the city and state officials.

Men like the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., who went to the jail on Christmas day asking the detainees to break the Code of Silence and turn in the names of the shooters, Father Michael L Pfleger and Cook County Comm. Richard Boykin continue to call for a White House summit on violence and the pouring of much needed resources into the inner city especially in eight “endangered” communities where gun violence is the highest.

A prime example of that is the recent arrest and charging of four black teenagers with hate crimes, felony aggravated kidnapping of a special-needs man, aggravated unlawful restraint and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

The White House has turned a deaf ear to their please, and we all wonder what will this new administration do, if anything, to quell this genocide or will Trump do anything since it is mostly black-on-black crime?

There is always a lot of finger-pointing when blood continues to run down the streets of Chicago and yellow and black police tape is wrapped around alleys and trees that are often lined with stuffed animals in memory of a youth gunned down sometimes in broad daylight.

There is no single answer to stopping the gun violence in Chicago. Our Police Supt. Eddie Johnson is as frustrated as we are and while Mayor Emanuel promises to hire 1,000 more police, we all know that will not stop the shooting.

I will continue to call for is a multi-tiered gun task force comprised of city, county, state and federal agencies working to stop the flow of guns into Chicago. and a similar task force working to secure federal funds to be used as incentives to turn in the killers…turn in the guns.

But the political climate in Chicago is often a roadblock to progress.

At the young age of 21, he was convicted on rape and burglary charges in 1978 and sentenced to 115 years in jail, but was released in 2009 when DNA evidence cleared of the charges.

Now he is 61 years old, and couldn’t initially even cash the $75 check that was given to him by the Tennessee Department of Corrections because he didn’t have an ID. He told CNN, “Because I had no ID it took me three months before I was able to cash it.”

But now, McKinney is asking Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam to exonerate him. He is also currently petitioning the state of Tennessee to compensate him with $1 million for the years of his life that were unjustly spent in prison. In fact, distributing free food to homeless people is considered illegal in more than 70 U.S. cities including Philadelphia, Ft. Lauderdale, Houston, and more. In Ft. Lauderdale, a 90-year-old WWII veteran was once actually arrested for feeding the homeless.

- The city requires food distribution to be done indoors only - The city wants to make homeless people go away - The city says that food given to the public can not be prepared in a "non -commercial" kitchen But does this really make homeless people go away?

Not according to the National Coalition for the Homeless. This nonprofit organization says that banning food distribution does not reduce the homelessness rates in cities because the homeless are not there because they want to be; They are there because they cannot find affordable housing, jobs, and many have mental health problems, addictions and physical disabilities for which they know of no place to go for help.

As of January 2015, there were 564,708 people in the U.S. who were homeless.

But Why? The reasons are usually very shallow, and seem to be designed to try and drive homeless people away. Many city officials feel that if efforts are made to keep feeding them, then the problem will only get bigger.

Here are a few stated reasons - The city is concerned about food safety and making the homeless ill - The city requires permits (for a fee, of course) in order to distribute free food - The city has strict food preparation guidelines

Fewer Black Women Are Getting HIV -HIV is one of the diseases that disproportionately affects African Americans. In fact, AfricanAmericans represent 44 percent of all new cases each year, according to the U.S. Centers For Disease Control (CDC), which is amazing because blacks make up only 13 percent of the total population in the U.S. But, there is good news. Among black women, HIV has been reduced by 50 percent.

Devastating statistics, but improvement being shown.

African Americans still have the highest percentage rate of HIV infections. It is the highest among black women, accounting for 6 out of 10 new infections in the U.S. But the CDC recently reported that between the years 2005-2014, new HIV transmission rates among Black women decreased from 8,020 to 4,623. This was a 42 percent decrease, more than the 20 percent reduction during the same time period overall.

And that's not the first time this has happened. Between 2008 and 2010, new HIV infections among African American women also decreased by 21 percent, according to the CDC.

Rep. Lewis: I would not invite Trump to Selma Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), said he would not invite President-elect Donald Trump to visit Selma, Alabama, with him, though he also would not "do anything to prevent him from coming."

On Bloody Sunday in 1965, Lewis was badly beaten by Alabama state troopers on Selma's Edmund Pettis Bridge during a march for voting rights.

Politicians and leaders from both parties - including Vice President-elect Mike Pence - have visited Selma with Lewis over the years. In 2015, Presidents Obama and Bush, went to Selma with Lewis and others to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday.

"By going to Selma," Lewis said of Trump, "maybe he would learn something." But, he added, "I would not invite him to come."

t has been documented that people have believed it was permitted by slave-owners to beat their slaves … as long as they don’t die in at least two– days. Please continue to read with understanding. Be it understood that some eve today actually believe that taking rod to people of color is in-fact the way of the bible and that Christ believed in such matters. Does God Command You to Beat Your Slaves?

On occasion I have written about the issue of slavery/servitude in the Bible. Note that by merely writing and thinking in terms of “slavery/servitude” you have just dissolved just about every atheist besmirching, via appeals to slavery, of the Bible (this is even though the atheist cannot even condemn slavery beyond informing you that they have personally decided to condemn it—which is a tautology, by the way).

I wished to focus upon one text which is ubiquitously employed a well-within-the-boxatheist-group-think-talking-point; namely, Exodus 21:20-21.

I will begin by providing examples of the manner in which the talking point has been expressed. I will cite some of the following quotes if they were published in an article/post but not if they were written in the form of comments to an article/post: Q: Is it OK to beat your slave?

A: Yes, as long as the slave does not die from the beating within [sic] the first day, you are considered innocent.1 Slowly beating your slaves to death It's okay with God if you slowly beat your slaves to death. After all, they are your money.

Just make sure that they survive at least a day or two after the beating…

It's okay to beat your slaves; even if they die you won't be punished, just as long as they survive a day or two after the beating (see verses 21:20-21). But avoid excessive damage to their eyes or teeth. Otherwise you may have to set them free.2 Go ahead, Beat your slave with a rod— Beat your slave as long as he or she can get up after a day or 2 you can beat your slave without mercy, just don't [sic] kill him. you can beat your slave all you want, but don't kill him! you'll get in trouble. it's okay to beat…beat your slave to death [ellipses in original].

I do not see how that says anything other than "it's OK to beat your slave so long as you don't kill or seriously injure the slave".

To be unwarrantedly fair, the "if your slave dies, it is a problem," verse does indicate that if your slave actually gets up after a couple of days then it is okay; which is to say, it is perfectly alright to beat your slave almost to death.

One such law is that you're allowed to beat your slave all you want, as long as you don't kill them you are allowed to beat your slave as much as you like as long as you don't knock out his eyes or his teeth.

What does the Bible say about beating slaves? It says you can beat both male and female slaves with a rod so hard that as long as they don't die right away you are cleared of any wrong doing.

Exod. 21:21 allows a slave owner to beat a slave to death, as long as it is an unintentional result of the severe beating.

You can beat your slave with a rod and its all good if the slave can get up AFTER A DAY OR TWO! The beating is so bad the slave needs a day or two to recover, amazing! It is legit to beat your slave as much as you want to.

God condoned, instituted and regulated slavery [sic], including giving detailed instruction how to beat your slave if you beat your slave and he dies right away then that is wrong, but if he dies slowly a few days later, than all is peachy.

It is okay to beat your slave as long as the slave does not die as the master owns the slave.

Some even today believe this mythology.

If I am to understand correctly; the message is that it is perfectly acceptable according to the Bible and its God to beat one’s slave. I actually encountered so many permutations of this atheist talking point that I had to stop at some point but atheist literature, websites, blogs and comment sections are saturated with likewise sentiments.

The message of Exodus 21:20-21 seems pretty clear: God commands those who follow Him to beat their slaves; this was recorded in the Bible and has been promulgated for millennia. Let us consider the text, the actual quote, the statement, made in Exodus 21:20-21 And if a man beats his male or female servant with a rod, so that he dies under his hand, he shall surely be punished. Notwithstanding, if he remains alive a day or two, he shall not be punished; for he is his property.

Incidentally, note that “for he is his property” is actually a dynamic translation/interpretation of one single word: keceph which means money, silver, shekel—a monetary amount.

It takes away the black and white of history and puts us firmly in a shade of gray.

One of the wealthiest men in the Midlands in the 1800s was a black man named William Ellison. He owned a cotton gin, plantation, and on the eve of the Civil War, 68 slaves.

One of the most vexing questions in African-American history is whether free African Americans themselves owned slaves. The short answer to this question, as you might suspect, is yes, of course; some free black people in this country bought and sold other black people, and did so at least since 1654, continuing to do so right through the Civil War. For me, the really fascinating questions about black slaveowning are how many black "masters" were involved, how many slaves did they own and why did they own slaves?

I must state that it seems that atheists find such detailed consideration, as those already considered and those which are to follow, simply too much with which to deal as they prefer the emotive nature of their one liners. I find that when I really attempt to understand and explain a text the atheist shouts “Rationalization!” Atheists cannot seem to decide if believers take the Bible too literally or not literally enough—I suppose they just grab whichever club is closest to them at the time when they want to beat upon the Bible and believers.

ouse Speaker Paul Ryan appears to be deviating from Donald Trump on issues like sanctioning Russia and the deportation of some undocumented immigrants.

Despite the president-elect's comments about maintaining a good relationship with Russia, at a CNN town hall at George Washington University, Ryan noted, "I do believe they tried to affect our elections... and so I do think sanctions are called for." He also told one undocumented parent of a US-born child in the audience not to be worried being deported. "If you're worried about some deportation force knocking on your door this year, don't worry about that."

She is also quoted as explaining, "The homework worksheet in question was downloaded from a website that allows teachers around the world to share educational resources. It is not part of our approved curriculum."

Instantly, Williams said, he was intrigued.

“I’ve always been curious about history, in spite of the fact that I majored in business and went into the construction business in my father’s foot steps,” Williams said.

Williams began his research in 2007 in the archives at the University of Pennsylvania, Taylor’s alma mater. Williams was able to find his grades — Taylor was a student the university’s Wharton business school — and the statistical history of his athletic career as a track and field runner. Taylor was also a member of Sigma Pi Phi, the first black fraternity.

The Free Library In Philadelphia and archives of local newspapers helped Williams find the birth and death dates of Taylor’s family. He discovered his father was a newly freed slave and an entrepreneur.

The more he uncovered about this mysterious Olympic legend, the more he realized how significant Taylor’s life was.

What Williams would go on to discover about Taylor’s largely forgotten story became the groundwork for his first book, “The Olympian,” a historical fiction based on Taylor’s life.

‘True Black History’

‘As per documented and not-edited’

his brings us to Anthony Johnson, Anthony Johnson first arrived in Virginia in 1621. Referred to as “Antonio a Negro” in early records, Anthony went to work on a tobacco plantation. It’s not clear whether he was an indentured servant (a servant contracted to work for a set amount of time) or a slave. [12] 1651, Johnson claimed 250 acres of land along Pungoteague Creek. He claimed the land by virtue of five headrights A headright was a colonial system put in place to help bring laborers to the new Colonies, in exchange for buying the contract for an indentured servant, the colonies would give the purchaser between 1 and 1000 acres each. In the case of Virginia it was given at a rate of 50 acres per indentured servant. So this means that Johnson had bought the contracts for 5 indentured servants, which typically had contracts of either 4 or 7 years. This is how Johnson came to have a servant named John Casor.

However, 4 years later, John Casor escaped to a nearby farm owned by Robert Parker and claimed that Johnson had kept him longer than his indenture by “7 or 8 years” which is obviously not true since he had only acquired his contract 4 years prior.

The Civil Suit was against Robert Parker for taking his property, not against John Casor. According to the case transcript form the original archives, John Casor claimed to be an indentured servant, which might have possibly been true if you consider that Virginia gave Johnson a 50 acre headright for him, but Johnson said he was not, and that he was purchased as a slave (probably untrue for above reasons) but there was obviously no proof of indenture since Casor was returned to Johnson. According to the ruling he was not “an indentured servant made a slave as the result of a civil suit” as the court apparently believed he was already a slave. He did not go to court to demand it. The transcript follows [13]: The deposition of Captain Samuel Goldsmith taken (in open court) 8th of March, That being at the house of Anthony Johnson Negro (about the beginning of November last to receive a hogshead of tobacco) a Negro called John Casar came to this Deponent, and told him that he came into Virginia for seven or Eight years (per Indenture) And that he had demanded his freedom of his master Anthony Johnson; And further said that Johnson had kept him his servant seven years longer than he ought, And desired that this deponent would see that he might have no wrong, whereupon your Deponent demanded of Anthony Johnson his Indenture, he answered, he never saw any; The said Negro (John Casor) replied, he came for a certain time and had an Indenture Anthony Johnson said he never did see any But that he had him for his life; Further this deponent said That Mr. Robert Parker and George Parker they knew that the said Negro had an Indenture (in on Mr. Carye hundred on the other side of the Bay) and the said Anthony Johnson did not tell the negro go free. The said John Casor would recover most of his Cows of him; Then Anthony Johnson (as this deponent did suppose) was in a fear. Upon this, his Son in law, his wife and his 2 sons persuaded the Anthony Johnson to sell to John Casor.

‘Stated Conclusion’ While the case of Anthony Johnson and John Casor was not the case of the first slave, first slave owner, or first legal slave owner, it might possible have been the first civil case involving slavery, and at the very least is the first known example in the colonies of a black man owning either indenture servants or slaves. Slaves had been here since 1619, and all slaves had been “legal” slaves (and thus their owners “legal” slave owners) since the first law legalizing slavery passed. The first man to be considered a slave by a court of law was John Punch, and his owner Hugh Gwyn considered the first slave owner by a court of law. However it might be of interest to note that in 1670, when Johnson died, a court in Virginia ruled that, because “he was a Negro and by consequence an alien,” the land owned by Johnson (in Virginia) rightfully belonged to the Crown meaning that because he was a negro he did not have the legal right to own property to begin with. In 1957, times were rough for young black men and women to get an education. Elizabeth Eckford was a young black woman determined to get her education. Everywhere she turned there were angry mobs equally determined that no blacks were entitled to an education.

• Black Olympic Winners Demanding World Attention •

John Baxter Taylor – born in Washington, D.C., Taylor became the first African American ever to win a gold medal. During the 1908 Olympics, he was a member of the record-breaking U.S. national 1,600-meter relay team. The 1908 Olympics games were held in London, the same site of the 2012 games.

Taylor graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine, and was a member of the Sigma Pi Phi, the first Black fraternity, also known as Boule. He died just five months after capturing gold in 1908, suffering from typhoid fever; he was only 26 years old. At the moment, the New York Times called him, “the world’s greatest negro runner.”

Alice Coachman – a native of Albany, Ga., Coachman became the first African-American woman to win an individual gold medal during the 1948 Summer Olympics. Coincidentally, Coachman’s gold medal was also won in London as she captured the high jump event by leaping 1.68 meters, or 5.5 feet.

Coachman was also a four-time National track champion for the Tuskegee Institute, excelling in the 50-meter and 100-meter dash.

She is an honorary member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, inducted during the AKA’s international conference in 1998.

DE Hart Hubbard – born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Hubbard became the first African-American male to win an individual gold medal during the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris by winning the long jump event. Hubbard was the “king of the long jump” during his era, setting a world record 7.89 meters (25.8 feet) at Chicago in June 1925; he also matched the world record in the 100-yard dash with a time of 9.6 seconds in a Cincinnati-located event in 1926.

Hubbard studied at the University of Michigan and was a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity. He died in 1976 and was inducted into the University of Michigan Hall of Fame in 1979.

Don Barksdale – born in Oakland, Calif., Barksdale was the first African-American male to play for the U.S. national men’s basketball team that went on to win gold during the 1948 Olympics in London. Considered a pioneer for Blacks in basketball, Barksdale was also the first of his race to be named a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) All-American and the first Black to play in the National Basketball Association All-Star game.

Barksdale studied at UCLA and joined the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. He was signed into the American Basketball Association (ABA) by the Baltimore Bullets in 1951 as a 28-year-old rookie, and was later traded to the Boston Celtics; he was the fifth Black man ever to play for a National Basketball Association (NBA) team. He died in 1993 at the age of 69.

Jesse Owens – born in Oakville, Ala., became the first man of any race to win four gold medals in track and field events during the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Owens captured gold in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, the long jump and the 4x100-meter relay.

The only other athlete to pull off such a feat is Carl Lewis, who won gold in the same events during the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Owens studied at Ohio State University, which later named its track and field stadium after him.

Dominique Dawes – born in Silver Spring, Md., Dawes is the first Black person of any nationality or gender to win an Olympic gold medal in gymnastics, and the first African-American woman to win any medal in an individual gymnastics event. She won gold as a member of the U.S. gymnastics team in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, and won a bronze medal in the individual floor event. She later graduated with a bachelor’s degree from University of Maryland, College Park, in 2002.

Anthony Ervin – a native of Hollywood, Calif., Ervin became the first African-American male to win a gold medal in a swimming event during the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Ervin captured his one and only gold medal in the 50-meter race. He also won a silver medal as a member of the 4x100 meter relay team.

According to reports, Ervin is of Jewish descent on his mother’s side and of African-American and Native American descent on his father’s side. He attended the University of California-Berkeley.

Shani Davis – born in Chicago, Ill., Davis is the first Black man of any nation to win a gold medal during a Winter Olympics Games.

He won gold in the 1000 meter speed skating event during the 2006 Winter games in Turin; he successfully defended his title during the 2012 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, the first man of any race to win back-to-back gold in the 1,000 meter event.

Davis has 51 career individual victories on the ISU Speed Skating World Cup circuit, second most all-time for males. He also set several world records, including three that still stand today.

feature the then Senator Barrack Obama on International Internet television. Her request to do an interview was permitted by the Rev. Harold E. Bailey, president of The PCC Network … the rest is now history.

Marshall Thompson of the world famous Chi-Lites, came to Probation Challenge during their early years and volunteered their service. Eugene Record, produced a taped recording that was played on all major radio stations entitled: Everybody Deserves A Second Chance, which is the program’s theme…. the rest is now history.

Marshall Thompson, the last of the original Chi-Lites continues to support Probation Challenge.

Eddie Thomas, the wind beneath the wing of many super-star entertainers, allowed the Probation Challenge organization to document his outstanding history with star performers.

One of the noted groups under his charge was the famous ‘Impressions’ who still have recording that linger in the mind.

Thomas and his wife Verlene, became members of the Probation Challenge board of directors and during the program’s crises of having an illegal eviction—they came to their recuse.

Thomas continues to do good in lending an up-hand to the downtrodden, those who have falling from grace. His work is now history. True Black History.

Justice R. Eugene, allowed the Rev. Harold E. Bailey, to create and implement the first educational court-mandated program of its kind in the country from his courtroom. The program was since introduced into the Illinois Law as ‘The Probation Challenge Act’.

Pincham, in addition to being an outstanding judge, was also an outstanding educator who at each sentencing would always educate an offender as to his or her ignorance and just why he was finding the person guilty. Pincham was one-of-akind with all people. Pincham was one-of-a-kind … the rest is Black History.

The Rev. Clay Evans, former founder and pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Chicago, has always been a supporter of young men and women seeking to do constructive measures. His friendship with Rev. Bailey goes back to an early childhood. He has continued his support for Bailey and that of his work to help youth who have fallen from grace. He leaves a mark on history … Black History.

oung, gender is not an issue, race is not an issue, social or economic status is not an issue! The issue is Human Trafficking!

Human trafficking is the trade of humans, most commonly for the purpose of Sexual Slavery, Forced Labor, or Commercial Sexual Exploitation for the trafficker or others.

The U.S. cities where human trafficking is worst are: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Las Vegas, San Diego, San Francisco, St. Louis, Tampa, and Washington, DC. According to the FBI, the average age of a child sexually exploited is 11. The average age of entry for a girl into prostitution is 13, for a boy 12.

Who are they? What do they look like? Where do they live? They are your neighbors, your classmates, members of your social clubs, churches or organizations. They look like you and they look like me! They live in our communities, sometimes in our very own homes!

A couple of years ago I did a radio program on Human Trafficking and how young boys 10 years to 16 years were being picked up in the Chicagoland area!

Some facts about sex trafficking...

It is estimated that there are 29.8 million men, women and children (Global Slavery Index, 2013) around the world that are victims of human trafficking. That is more people enslaved today than any other time in history.

It is estimated that there are 100,000 - 300,000 minors sexually exploited each year. At-risk youth are the most vulnerable.

Every year, traffickers generate billions of dollars by victimizing millions of people. It is estimated that the trafficking industry makes $32 billion a year. The price of a slave today is equivalent to the cost of a pair of designer jeans ($90). It is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world.

Nationally, 450,000 teens run away from home each year. One out of three of these teens on the street will be lured toward prostitution within 48 hours of leaving home. This means at least 150,000 children are lured into prostitution each year. (NISMART) Language as an Indicator of Pimp Controlled Sexual Exploitation Words Specific to Pimp Controlled Sexual Exploitation Pimps, Traffickers, Arrangers, Madams: Anyone who persuades others to become involved in the sex trade, or benefits from others involvement in the sex trade. Surprisingly your trafficker can be a stranger, family member, or intimate partner. Not always men.

Finesse Pimp: A pimp who uses psychological manipulation as his primary means of control.

Guerrilla Pimp: A pimp who uses violence as his primary means of control.

Main Players Daddy: Refers to a prostituted woman’s own pimp. Intended to reinforce a perceived status as “the provider.”

Bottom Girl/Bottom Bitch: Street language referring to female associate who is at the top of the hierarchy of the women/girls controlled by a pimp. The bottom is said to be the foundation that the “family” can be built upon.

Folks/Family: Slang term describing one’s pimp and/or the unit as the pimp and other individuals under his control.

Stable: Demeaning slang term referring to the multiple individuals a pimp may be exploiting at one time. Reinforces the concept of ownership and the dehumanization of the individuals who are being exploited.

Wife in Law: Another woman who works for the same pimp.

P.I.: Street term used to reference a pimp other than one’s own.

Recruitment Breaking/Breaking Bread: Slang term meaning giving all of one’s money to one’s pimp.

Seasoning: When a pimp rapes, beats, manipulates, and intimidates in order to break down a victim.

Pimp Circle: A group of pimps surrounding an individual for the purposes of intimidation.

Turning Out: Slang term referring to the recruitment process of initiating someone into the sex trade.

Turning Out Folks: Refers to the pimps who first put the victims on the street.

Choosing Up: When a victim makes direct eye contact with a pimp who does not “own” her, or when another pimp manipulates a victim into going with him. The victim has to give her new pimp all of the money she made for the old pimp that evening.

Reckless Eyeballing: Looking into a pimp’s eyes, which then can cause choosing up or kidnapping for ransom.

Other Terms Automatic Bar: Refers to a “robotic” state of being induced by severe manipulation, whereby the victim continues to perform sexual favors without being watched by her pimp.

Branded/Branding: When a pimp tattoos his/her name on the victim.

Brothel: A form of indoor prostitution where a group of women are engaged in prostitution in the same location.

Club Based Prostitution: A form of indoor prostitution. Prostitution is arranged for customers of the bar or club and may occur on premises.

Coercion: Threats of serious harm to, or physical restraint against, any person. Also any scheme, plan, or pattern intended to cause a person to believe that failure to perform an act would result in serious harm to, physical restraint against, or legal action against oneself or someone else.

Commercial Sex Act: Any sex act on account of which something of value is given to or received in exchange for such act.

CSEC: Acronym for Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children. Any situation in which a child is induced to perform sexual acts by a third party who profits.

Curb Crawling/Curb Crawler: Driving slowly down the street with the intent to pick up a prostituted individual. Also spelled “Kerb Crawling.”

Drug House: A form of indoor prostitution where sex is exchanged for drugs.

Escort Service: A form of indoor prostitution where “dates” are arranged through an

organized service. Exotic Dancing: Nude or semi-nude dancing in a club or bar. Can serve as a front for a trafficking and/or a prostitution operation.

The Game/The Life: Slang term used to describe the sex trade Hotels: A venue for indoor prostitution. Prostitution is often on sale for hourly rates.

Indoor Prostitution: Venues for prostitution located inside. It is less visible, but far more common than street prostitution. Types of indoor prostitution may include massage parlors, strip clubs, hotels, bar or club based prostitution, brothels, escort services, and internet arranged prostitution.

Johns: Slang term to refer to those who purchase commercial sex acts including pornography.

The Life: Being involved in pimp control.

Lot Lizard: A derogatory term for a person who is being prostituted at truck stops.

Massage Parlor or Health Spa: Often serve as fronts for prostitution and/or trafficking operations. Common indoor venue where commercial sexual activity takes place.

Prostitution, Prostituted Woman, Someone Impacted by the Sex Trade: The exchange of sexual activity for something of value, which could include money, drugs, food, housing, or other survival needs. Derogatory slang to describe this include hooker, ho, streetwalker, etc.

Quota: An amount of money a victim must provide to her trafficker/pimp every night.

Renegade: Someone who is involved in prostitution of his or her own accord and has no pimp.

Runaway/Kiddie Track: A specific area where young girls usually ages 11-16 are sent by their trafficker/pimp to earn money.

Severe form of trafficking: Sex Trafficking in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such acts has not attained 18 years of age. This is also used to refer to the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for labor or services, through the use of force, fraud, or coercion for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage, or slavery.

Sex Trade Industry: A multi-billion dollar industry that includes street prostitution, escort services, massage parlors, strip clubs, adult and child pornography, and prostitution tourism.

Sex Trafficking: The recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for the purpose of a commercial sex act.

Street Prostitution: Prostitution in which purchasers solicit individuals on the street, the most visible form of prostitution.

Squaring Up: Getting away from the trafficking situation.

Track/Stroll: Slang term referring to an area where street prostitution occurs.

Trick/Date: Signifies either a person buying a victim, or the act of prostitution.

Parents Know Possible Red Flags of Human Trafficking In order to combat human trafficking, one must understand what the injustice is and what actions to take. We do not encourage people to take matters into their own hands. Rather, we want to teach you ways that you can help if and when you spot a potential victim.

Because our minds are not programmed to recognize a trafficked victim, it can take us by surprise and sometimes even terrify us when we know someone is in danger. In order to recognize a potential victim, one must know what to look for.

Not all the red flags listed below are present in every human trafficking situation and the presence or absence of any of the red flags is not necessarily proof of human trafficking.

Would you ever consider repairing what was your responsible in the disrepair? Then again, what if your landlord felt that you had not lived up to those conditions set-forth at the beginning of your tenant/ landlord arraignment?

Now, what about that eviction notice? The inspecting notice that will take us from the lifeproperty we thought was our own and that we had … without any accountability!

Where shall we now go? We have torn-up that which once was the best ever given to man or woman… with life more abundantly.

After this house that has brought pain, sickness, disappointments and so many uncertainties, we were promised by the Supreme-Landlord, that after this old house would have dissolved… there would be yet another house in eternity that would not be built with hands. Clarence McMillan, a man with a gift to instruct computers, humbly came to Probation Challenge to instruct students in the area of computer science. His intend was to stay for only a couple of years and move on to what was thought to be bigger and better opportunities, however he became involved with the students and their intent to change their lives.

McMillan has engineered The PCC Truth message around the world for over 20-years while serving as Internet specialist and consultant. Through his work in the area of computer-science, Probation Challenge received the acclaimed Hollywood ‘Tally Award’.

Juanita Bratcher, noted journalist, recently celebrated her 40th year of reporting. The well attended event took place in Chicago, at the South side Woodson Library. The audience enjoyed hearing Bratcher read poems that she had written, and listened to her reflect back over a success journalistic career in community, politics and education. She told of the numerous music compositions she had written and have now recorded by world known artist.

Bratcher always wanted to be a singer, however circumstances would not allow, however on the evening of her 40th event, she had an opportunity to sing and singing is what she did. Some songs performed were of noted personalities while several recordings were by famous singer Tina Turner.

Well wishers were on hand to say thank you to a wonderful lady who has helped them achieve in their lives. In attendance were reporters, singers, ministers, lawyers, laymen and many next-door neighbors. All came to show respect!

G

od is good. There are times when we need to hear from Him. I needed to hear from Him recently, but no word. When I stopped questioning God, and decided to just trust Him, and realized that my urgency is not His urgency, the answer came. The answer came - not from God, but from within me. When we first check our attitude toward God and the circumstance that are troubling us, we may find that our approach is wrong. It may come down to a matter of simply trusting Him, regardless of the circumstance or even when we don't understand.

The issues that prompted the above exchange are the prevailing political climate in the nation, and the collision course with destruction that (from my perspective) we seem to be rushing toward.

The wheels of change in my feeling and attitude were set in motion during a subsequent conversation with Pastor Lottie Woods Hall Reverend Harold E. Bailey. We were discussing Reverend Martin Luther King's birthday and the Civil Rights Movement. In the middle of our exchange, I experienced an inner illumination with the accompanying words - "He can do it again!" At this, I began to re-experience the miraculous and mighty move of God that occurred in Birmingham, Alabama over fifty years ago. I happened to be an active participant in the Movement and had a ringside seat. God miraculously brought hope, light, and positive change out of a dark, desperate, and seemly hopeless situation. He brought hope and change to an oppressed people. He changed years of mistreatment, oppression, and blatant disregard for the humanity of Black people, and brought a new and brighter day. Although the battle has not been completely won, we were set free. The trajectory of our existence was changed.

Change comes through God. He sets the timing. He can change this nation. "Nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come." "There is a time and season for every purpose under the heaven." (Ecclesiastes 3:1) He then chose the people - willing vessels such as Dr. King and others to stand at the forefront and be instruments of change. He can do it again!

Man is not in charge of His existence, so we need not fear him. God can and will move in His timing, in a moment in the twinkling of an eye. Man can not stop Him. I've seen Him do it! We only need faith to believe, and stand ready to be instruments of change. We can not do anything without God, but God will not do anything without us.

Exchange fear for faith, and worry for work. He (God) can do it again!

In closing, I refer to the old TV advertisement where a man was slapped and said, "Thanks, I needed that!" I also respond to this positive slap of illumination from within-with thanks! I needed that! Pastor Lottie Woods Hall—The Intercessory Center, Greenville, South Carolina.

Steve Harvey meets with Donald Trump: The comedian, author, and TV/radio personality recently made headlines when the cameras captured him just as he was leaving a meeting with Trump. He reportedly made a brief stop to speak with journalists and then posed for what many are calling “an awkward photo-op” with Trump.

Afterwards, Harvey he told them that he and Trump had a “really cool meeting” on how to help inner cities and “bring about positive change”. He also added that Trump introduced him to Dr. Ben Carson, who is now the new director of Housing and Urban Development.

Harvey added that Trump realizes that there are serious problems in areas problems, and that he wants to do something about it… and that Chicago would be one of many cities that they want to help.

Myya D. Jones, 22-years old: A graduate of Michigan State University, she has served as the president of the National Pan Hellenic Council, and has had two positions on the board of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA). In addition, she has been a Google Student Ambassador, has sat on a Sexual Violence Advisory Committee, and has studied abroad in six different countries. She says her interest in politics can be most easily attributed to her time on Capitol Hill.

She comments, “I have always been interested in civil engagement. But I was turned off from doing politics because we had such a negative stigma around politics in Detroit.”

Nationwide — Michael Ealy, the blue-eyed hunk was named one of People magazines’ “On the Verge” actors in the magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” 2002 and 2013 issues. Furthermore, he was named one of E! Entertainment Television’s “Sizzlin’ 16” of 2004 and appeared on the cover of Essence magazine’s “Hollywood Screen Gems” for their April 2004 issue.

Here he talks with syndicated columnist Kam Williams about a couple of different things including his role in Think Like A Man, Too: Kam Williams: Hi Michael, thanks for the time, bro.

Michael Ealy: What’s up, Kam? KW: Tim [Director Tim Story] managed to reassemble the whole cast for the sequel. How’d he make that happen?

ME: It’s a miracle that everybody’s schedule opened up. I think part of the genius of it was that they made the decision early, and said, “Next summer, we’re going to try to knock this out.” So, everyone kind of made sure that they were available. We also had such a good time making the first one that everybody jumped at the chance to come back and do a sequel with the same cast and same director. That’s an opportunity you just don’t get very often.

Nationwide — If you’ve been to a Boyz II Men concert lately, you may have noticed that there are no longer four members. Just Nathan, Wanya, and Sean are the performers these days, but what ever happened to bass singer Michael McCary?

Well, he finally came out and said why he is no longer with the group. Via a YouTube video, he said, “For four years…I’ve been working out my body to get my health right, to get my body right… get my mind right. It’s time to just go ‘head and move forward.”

He continued, “The initial thing was we were supposed to do a reunion a couple years back and it all came down to money. It all came down to the fellas wanted to split three ways, instead four ways and wanted to pay me basically like a baggage handler. And it just… just didn’t make sense to me.”

Hammer and Nails for Men: Many people know Michael Elliot as the Hollywood screenwriter behind films like Brown Sugar, Like Mike and Just Wright. But he is also a successful entrepreneur who, you might say, owes his success to Shark Tank for turning him down on a deal. That's right, they turned him down and actually told him his idea of nail salons for men would never work.

Elliot opened his first salon, called Hammer & Nails, in 2013 on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. Within his first seven months in business, he made $150,000 in sales, and he projected he would make $2 million in sales in 2016. This is when he made the decision to franchise his business so it could grow even more. He presented his idea on ABC's Shark Tank in 2014, but they turned him down, telling him it wouldn't fly.

he Rev. Dr. Harold E. Bailey, founder and president of the Probation Challenge PCC Network, appeared recently on the WBGX Butt Naked Truth Show. Harold Davis, show host, greeted Rev. Bailey and Pastor Mitty Collier with open arms as ministers of the gospel who were barring raw-truth.

Bailey, after being bed-ridden excepted Davis’ invitation to speak. Bailey said “Its past time to withhold truth from the suffering tax payers. We have been abused and certainly misused by the powers–that-be. Honest, we can’t say that its about white people. Blacks are out doing the work of field Negros in pretense of help the community—when in-fact they are helping themselves in regal fashion.’

Pastor Mitty Collier, More Like Christ Ministries, is one to be applauded for her giving back into the community. She feeds once per month those having need. And she never forget the children during the holidays. Her ministry is located at 8201 South Dobson, in Chicago, Illinois.

Davis who is known for telling it just the way it is, was pleased that Bailey was able to appear and asked that he return soon.
