The extraordinary vocal quartet Anonymous 4 returns this month with Marie et Marion, a follow-up to their hit album Love’s Illusion, which spent 29 weeks on the Billboard chart (p.7). Spring is in the air, and William Christie’s Le Jardin de Monsieur Rameau on the new Les Arts Florissants label presents a collection of gems from the French Baroque (p.19). Vocal highlights of the month include Haydn songs from tenor Werner Güra (p.8) and the solo recital début of soprano Sophie Karthäuser singing mélodies by Poulenc (p.10). The Akademie fur Alte Musik Berlin’s album of Mozart Adagios & Fugues after J.S. Bach further illuminates the amazing genius of both composers (p.9). Hyperion focuses on the Romantic period, with releases of Brahms Quintets with the Takács Quartet (p.13) and the fifteenth volume in their Romantic Violin Concerto series (p.15). On LSO Live, Sir John Eliot Gardiner makes his label début with an album of music by Stravinsky (p.21). The latest Onyx releases feature Canadian violinist James Ehnes playing works by Khachaturian and Shostakovich (p.24) and violinist Viktoria Mullova reveling in the spirit of Brazil with her album of song arrangements entitled Stradivarius in Rio (p.25). Non classical priorities include Linyera by Argentina’s superstar Melingo (p.41) and Soulblazz by jazz vocalist Natalia M. King (p.34).

Jasper de Waal (french horn), Candida Thompson (violin), Hans Colbers (clarinet), Frank van de Laar (piano) Channel Classics • CCS SA 34014 IMPORT SACD Hybrid/Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD Jasper de Waal is not only the beloved principal hornist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra; Price Code: CA22 he is also a world class soloist, giving masterclasses (Suggested Retail Price: $22.98) and playing solo concertos and chamber music recitals around the world. This release celebrates his twenty-fifth anniversary as a professional musician. The three composers featured here, Brahms, Reinecke and Schumann, do nothing to hide their fondness for the sound of the horn; their passion, is evident in all three pieces. They make wonderful use of the instrument’s potential and the typical character of its sound in combination with the other instruments.

Edinburgh Quartet Delphian • DCD 34081 IMPORT On this release by the Edinburgh Quartet, noted specialists in contemporary repertoire, the group delves into chamber music’s glorious past. Price Code: CA20 Here, two of the repertoire’s most familiar works (Suggested Retail Price: $20.98) are linked by the less commonly programmed but equally virtuosic String Quartet No.2 by Prokofiev. The work portrays a Russian composer writing home from the geographical margins just as 150 years earlier Haydn had looked outwards, to the Grand Duchess Maria Feodorovna of Russia and her husband the future Tsar, to whom the Op.33 set was dedicated. If the Prokofiev displays energy and folk-inflected vigor, Shostakovich demands – and receives – total expressive commitment in a work which, the composer darkly suggested to a friend, was written in his own memory.

RACHMANINOV Songs

IMPORT This is the first complete recording in twenty years of Rachmaninov’s complete published songs. Delphian’s set employs seven singers, Price Code: CA20 hand-picked by renowned pianist Iain Burnside. (Suggested Retail Price: $20.98) All are native Russian speakers, and each song is performed in the key in which Rachmaninov wrote it, respecting both the specificity of vocal color and the carefully designed tonal and expressive trajectory within each opus. For the first twenty-five years of his career Rachmaninov regularly expressed himself in song, from Tchaikovskian beginnings to the extraordinarily personal range of vocal and pianistic utterance in his final two collections. Burnside and his singers bring these works to shimmering, crackling, and magnificent life.

SCHNITTKE Complete Piano Music Simon Smith (piano) Delphian • DCD 34131 IMPORT In 2002 Simon Smith made his recording debut on Delphian in a disc of James MacMillan’s complete piano music, paired with Stuart Price Code: 2CA15 (2 CD Set, Suggested Retail Price: $31.98) MacRae’s Piano Sonata. Recordings of music by Haflioi Hallgrímsson and Thomas Wilson have followed. In this new, substantial outing Smith turns from music-making in Scotland to another of his lifelong loves, the music of Alfred Schnittke. This two-disc set comprises Schnittke’s entire published output for solo piano (including one piece for piano duet and another for six hands at one keyboard.) The Russian composer’s music often makes gargantuan demands of the player. Smith’s technical prowess, astonishing dynamic palette and heartfelt musicality make him its ideal exponent.

Preethi de Silva (harpsichord) First Hand • FHR 28 IMPORT Harpsichordist and fortepianist Preethi de Silva has performed extensively as soloist and chamber musician in the US, the UK, Europe, Price Code: CA20 and Australia. Born in Sri Lanka, she studied at (Suggested Retail Price: $20.98) London’s Royal Academy of Music and Berlin’s Hochschule für Musik, and at Yale University, where she earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree. Considered an expert in the music of C.P.E. Bach, the Oxford journal Early Music recognized her for her “profound understanding of [C.P.E.] Bach’s idiosyncratic language.” Originally released in 1984 on the Titanic label, First Hand offers this highly acclaimed recording its début on CD in celebration of C.P.E. Bach’s 300th birthday.

The Hidden Violin Romantic Virtuoso Works for Solo Violin Vaughan Jones (violin) First Hand • FHR 29 IMPORT This recording by violinist Vaughan Jones aims to cast a spotlight on some of the remarkable, forgotten music written for the solo violin Price Code: CA20 between 1840 and 1919. The long shadow of J.S. (Suggested Retail Price: $20.98) Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas looms over some of the works contained on this disc, yet many are liberated from this influence, displaying resourcefulness and an array of moods that draw the listener in. Many of the pieces have never been recorded before and some, particularly the Godard Sonata and Saint-Lubin Fantaisie, deserve to take their place beside Bach, Bartók and Ysaÿe as interesting additions to the core of the solo violin repertoire.

HAYDN Scottish Airs, Piano Trio Hob.XV:27 Werner Güra (tenor), Julia Schröder (violin), Roel Dieltiens (cello), Christoph Berner (fortepiano) harmonia mundi • HMC 902144 IMPORT The arrangements of Scottish ‘national melodies’ (nearly 400 in all) are among the little-known gems of Haydn’s last years. Already an acknowledged master of the piano trio medium (as is proved by the inspired Trio Hob. XV:27 also included here), Haydn turned his accompaniments to these songs into miniature chamber music masterpieces brimming with vigor and wit. This recording featuring tenor Werner Güra offers a selection of these works that covers a wide expressive range, from tender love songs to songs rich with sarcastic folk humor.

MOZART Adagios & Fugues after J.S. Bach Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin harmonia mundi • HMC 902159 IMPORT It has too often been overlooked that, between J.S. Bach’s death and the triumphant revival of his St. Matthew Passion by Mendelssohn, other composers had already investigated the oeuvre of this “old master.” Mozart was the most fervent among them. He once wrote to his father, “Every Sunday at twelve I go to Baron van Swieten’s and nothing is played there except Handel and Bach. I’m currently making myself a collection of Bach fugues.” On this release, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin perform Mozart’s string arrangements of Adagios and Fugues from Bach’s The WellTempered Clavier, bringing the work of two brilliant composers to life.

POULENC Mélodies – Les anges musiciens... Sophie Karthäuser (soprano), Eugene Asti (piano) harmonia mundi • HMC 902179 IMPORT Francis Poulenc’s songs are among the most beautiful and accomplished in the entire French repertoire. A friend of poets like Apollinaire, Éluard, Aragon and Louise de Vilmorin, he was constantly alert to their imaginative worlds and their mystery. The voluptuous or nostalgic nonchalance, the gentle melancholy or the impertinent flippancy of these works never appear to take themselves seriously, and invariably represent the highest art. On this recording, the renowned Belgian soprano Sophie Karthäuser returns to harmonia mundi for her first recital program, performing a generous selection of Poulenc’s Mélodies.

“Sophie Karthäuser’s lyrical soprano proves ideal... the clarity of her diction sets a standard.”

Volume 2 looks at the huge impact made by George Gershwin and his unique mix of classical and jazz sensibilities. Pierné’s fame came from his conducting, and his compositions are largely forgotten today. His Piano Quintet shows the influences of Massenet and Franck. Best known for his sacred organ music, Vierne’s String Quartet shows a lighter side. It features the Intermezzo, one of the most beautiful movements in all French chamber music. Over it hovers the spirit of Berlioz’s Queen Mab Scherzo and of Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, conjured up by pizzicatos, tremolos and dancing phrases that suddenly turn on a centime piece from one key to another.

KREISLER Violin Music

IMPORT Hyperion is delighted to welcome award-winning violinist Jack Liebeck to the label, together with his frequent collaborator, Katya Apekisheva. Liebeck presents a selection of music by the legendary Viennese violinist and composer Fritz Kreisler. Clever and mischievous, Kreisler’s works were once passed off as being written by composers of the past - until New York Times critic Olin Downes discovered the deception and it made front-page news worldwide. This selection includes Kreisler’s absurdly virtuosic arrangement of The Devil’s Trill by Tartini. Kreisler’s edition, incorporating a realization of the figured bass as well as fingerings and phrasings, provides a fearsome cadenza involving triple- and quadruple-stopping as well as two and three-note trills.

There are 26 songs in all, several of which seem never to have been recorded before (a fact which is hard to understand because they are very attractive). One of Wolf ’s favorite writers, Eichendorff was a German Romantic poet par excellence. His poems are full of the sounds of nature and musical imagery, with references to minstrels and other musicians. He was the poet of Schumann’s Op.39 Liederkreis, though perhaps the most well-known Eichendorff setting is Im Abendrot from Strauss’s Four Last Songs.

It features the celebrated countertenors James Bowman and Michael Chance at the peak of their powers, and the combination of their two voices with the sympathetic accompaniment of The King’s Consort creates something uniquely glorious. Purcell was a countertenor himself and in his writing for the voice produced some of his most felicitous music. John Blow, Purcell’s predecessor and successor as organist of Westminster Abbey, reached his compositional zenith with the extended duet on the subjects of Purcell’s tragic early death and inextinguishable influence.

From the refined neo-classicism of Bernstein’s Serenade to Herrmann’s expressionistic score to Psycho, from the vitality of Gershwin’s Preludes to the philosophical musical innovations of Ives to the poetic lyricism of Barber’s Adagio, this unique recording presents five facets of the musical history of the New World. American violinist Tai Murray is joined by the Orchestre Poitou-Charentes led by Jean-François Heisser, who is also the soloist in the Gershwin.

Sonata per sei is a reworking of material originally developed in his 2006 piano concerto written to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Bartók’s birth. When Frank Zappa died in 1993 at only 42, Eötvös responded with grief and anger. Chicago Fire

IMPORT File in: Jazz There’s an old saying that a great jazz musician never plays a song the same way once. That could certainly be said of Eric Alexander. His harmonic inventiveness is exceptional and he’ll run the changes at such length at times that you wonder if he’ll resolve everything in time and end up back on the beat – but he always does. Alexander has a big, full, sound, and a ferocious technique, with access to the full range of his instrument, all under super-human control. On Chicago Fire, he explores the repertoire of another school of tenor playing – the Chicagoans. With long-time collaborators Harold Mabern, Jon Webber and Joe Farnsworth, Alexander gives the nod to some Windy City players who helped shape the sound of jazz for decades.

After hiatus from the studio, King returns in style with Soulblazz, an album of twelve blazing new tracks, most of which are originals. The Adventurous Monk

IMPORT File in: Jazz Jazz pianists today must practice their art in the shadow of the towering figure of Thelonious Monk. If that be the case, then botanists would label pianist Eric Reed a Night Blooming Jazzman for he not only thrives in that shadow, but he embraces it in this installment of his ongoing exploration of Monk’s music. Reed is faced with the daunting task of separating Monk’s music from his piano playing, retaining the compositions, and then bringing something new to the party. This new recording -- along with Reed’s two previous volumes -- takes Monk’s unique and highly identifiable music and compliments it rather than trying to completely rework it. In the process, Reed has managed to make these works sound fresh and interesting while never resorting to incongruous pianism to resurrect the style of the composer and never compromising his own considerable musical integrity.
