The year may be coming to an end, but there are still lots of great new releases on the way. December’s offering is headlined by our non-classical releases, which include Au pays d’Alice, a jazz musical based on Alice in Wonderland by trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf and rapper-poet Oxmo Puccino (p.24). Howe Records’s latest soundtrack release features Rosewater — the directorial début of Daily Show host Jon Stewart. Howard Shore’s atmospheric score is paired with songs by Leonard Cohen, Mahdyar Aghajani and 25 Band (p.24). In classical releases, vocal music fans will delight in the second solo disc for the Aparté label by the superb countertenor Xavier Sabata. I Dilletanti features music by a selection of Venice’s non-professional composers (p.4). Channel Classics offers a new two SACD set of the complete Brandenburg Concertos from featuring the acclaimed English chamber ensemble Florilegium (p.9). Orange Mountain proudly presents the first release of the complete piano Etudes of Philip Glass. Recently completed, these fascinating works are given definitive performances by Maki Namekawa (p.14). Worthy of special notice is La Dolce Volta’s reissue of the complete organ works of J.S. Bach played by André Isoir. This fifteen disc set is beautifully packaged and offered at a special low price (p.12).

It follows the story of Bahari’s imprisonment in Tehran in 2009 and his interrogation at the hands of a man he knew only as Rosewater. Accused of espionage while covering Iran’s elections for the BBC, Bahari was stunned to find among the government’s supposedly incriminating evidence personal photos from dinner parties, his Facebook posts, and his appearance in a segment on The Daily Show. Now referred to as the Hillsborough Disaster, it remains the worst stadium-related disaster in British history. Michael Nyman’s Symphony No.11 was written as a memorial to the victims. The work is heard here in an emotionally charged performance by Liverpool-born mezzo-soprano Kathryn Rudge, accompanied by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra led by Josep Vicent.
