Celebrating the 44th Anniversary of HARLEM WEEK The original purpose of HARLEM DAY in 1974 was to raise the spirits of Harlemites still living in Harlem and to promote the greatness of Harlem, focusing on the multiple colleges and institutions of higher learning in the community including Columbia University, Barnard College, The City College of New York, Union Theological Seminary, Touro College of Podiatric Medicine and many others. Also, to celebrate neighborhood churches and historic locations: Abyssinian Baptist Church, Canaan Baptist Church, Mother A.M.E. Zion Church, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Hamilton Grange National Memorial, The Riverside Church, Ulysses S. Grant National Memorial Park, Studio Museum in Harlem, Apollo Theater, Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, et.al.

A group of Harlemites, friends and associates including Lloyd Williams, Voza Rivers, Tony Rogers, Stephanie Francis, Michele Scott, Larry Frazier, Marvin Kelly, Joe Roberts, Vivian Robinson, Ozzie Thompson, Lois Alexander and others were encouraged by then Manhattan Borough President Percy Sutton to create the first HARLEM DAY event on August 17, 1974. The initial activity of the day was a ribbon cutting ceremony at 138th Street & 7th Avenue officially re-naming 7th Avenue to Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard. This was the first time a major street in New York City was named after a person of color. Some of those in attendance on that day were music legends Ella Fitzgerald, Tito Puente, Max Roach, stage and screen stars Ossie Davis & Ruby Dee, Harlem politicians, who would become icons, Charles Rangel and David Dinkins, radio legends Hal Jackson and Frankie Crocker, and many more.

Little did these planners and their committee members realize that this “one time” “one day” event would, due to great response and demand, eventually increase in popularity to become a month-long happening. In excess of 2 million persons attended HARLEM WEEK 2018, which now includes over 110 events comprised of conferences, seminars, expos, sporting events, festivals, live music, food & beverage tastings, fashion shows, an auto show, art exhibits, culinary initiatives, live entertainment, dance, vendors, movies, and outdoor markets.

This year HARLEM WEEK celebrated its 44th Anniversary with not one, but two themes. Throughout the events of HARLEM WEEK 2018, 44 impactful women and focused organizations were saluted and recognized based on our first theme: “Women Transforming Our World: Past, Present & Future”. The second theme: “The Community within the Community” Saluting LGBTQ was also woven throughout HARLEM WEEK to enlighten and underscore this community’s numerous contributions.

Women Transforming Our World: Past, Present & Future & “The Community within the Community” Saluting LGBTQ In observance of HARLEM WEEK’s 44th anniversary, the women of HARLEM WEEK and The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors selected 44 women who have made transformative contributions regionally, nationally and globally to represent this year’s theme: Women Transforming Our World: Past, Present & Future. Both Boards agreed that it was important to acknowledge and respect differences in ethnicity, cultural background, sexual orientation and gender equality. During HARLEM WEEK 2018 we recognized the many contributions of the LGBTQ community and affiliated organizations with our theme “The Community within the Community” Saluting LGBTQ. Hundreds of models came out to the adult model casting call hoping to participate in one of the two major HARLEM WEEK Fashion shows, “Fashion Fusion” on “A Great Day in Harlem” (Sun., July 29th) and “Fashion Flava” on “Summer in the City” (Sat., Aug. 18th).

On Tues., July 17th, for the fourth year, Macy’s hosted the children’s regional fashion “Open Call” for young models ages 5-17 years old at its world famous flagship store in Herald Square.

It attracted 200+ youth and their parents. Models that were selected participated in the Macy’s/HARLEM WEEK “Back To School” Fashion Show on HARLEM DAY produced by Deborah Williams and Her Game 2.

These young ladies are next on the runway at Macy’s Herald Square.

Special awards in keeping with HARLEM WEEK’s themes: “Women Transforming Our World: Past Present & Future” and “The Community within the Community” Saluting LGBTQ were presented to music pioneer Nona Hendryx, groundbreaking choreographer and theater producer George Faison and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The evening’s music was provided by the Afro-Cuban Jazz Ensemble Chino Pons Y Grupo Irek. A fabulous time was had by all.

The first public event of HARLEM WEEK 2018. An extraordinary outdoor concert featuring live broadcasts and interviews. The day highlighted international vendors and exhibitors promoting arts, crafts, culture, education, clothing, and foods from around the world.

“A Great Day” began with an international cultural showcase of Artz, Rootz & Rhythm’s salute to music and dance featuring performances from Uptown Dance Academy, The Phil Ramone Orchestra for Children, Impact Repertory Theatre, South African artist Romeo Mputu, Unveiled Unlocked, a performance from the cast of the Broadway Musical Smokey Joe’s Cafe and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s Wells Fargo Jazz for Teens. The Tri-State Gospel Showcase was hosted by WLIB-AMs Liz Black and included performances from Sheila Ingram, Derrell Thomas, The Songs of Solomon Choir and Gospel Superstar Bishop Hezekiah Walker. Next was the very popular “Fashion Fusion” showcase highlighting the very best in urban fashion from throughout the northeast region. “A Concert Under the Stars” featured musical tributes to Minnie Riperton and Phyllis Hyman, and performances from R&B Superstar Peabo Bryson, along with The Hamiltones, Harlem MusicFest Musical Director, Ray Chew & the Harlem Week All-Star Band featuring Alyson Williams.

Senior Citizens Day Luncheon honorees included HARLEM WEEK board member and co-founder of Harlem Mothers SAVE, Jackie Rowe-Adams, recipient of the 2018 Vivian Robinson Arts & Culture Award. The Civil/Human Rights Award was presented to Bishop Herbert Daughtry. A Customer Recognition Award was given to Maria B. Litwin by MetroPlus. The traditional senior awards were bestowed upon the oldest male and female senior citizens in attendance, James Rogers and Maudry McCullough, who were 99 and 102 years of age, respectively. The Children’s Festival presents to New Yorkers two sensational days of festivities including a kickoff parade on Saturday featuring marching bands, mascots and dancers. The festival also includes live entertainment. A Saturday highlight was the Harlem “Spelling Bee” which took place during “Summer in the City”. This year marked the second year of the HARLEM WEEK “Spelling Bee” and it is quickly becoming a special event. Approximately Over 20 students ranging from Kindergarten to 5th grade participated in the event and received prizes ranging from autographed books from author Benjamin Morse, who also served as a judge, tickets to Broadway plays and more. One of the biggest successes of the event was witnessing some of the youngsters who participated in the first Spelling Bee, return again this year after studying diligently to improve their showing of last year. Their hard work made a difference and it was heartwarming to see.

This 2-Day Outdoor Family Film Festival featured two films with a strong connection to the HARLEM WEEK 2018 Theme: Women Transforming the World: Past, Present & Future. “Hidden Figures” focuses on the three Black women, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson and Dorothy Vaughn, who performed thousands of mathematical calculations that were essential to the success of NASA’s early missions to the Moon. Scholarships, Internships, & Grants Our Commitment to Education HARLEM WEEK, in partnership with The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, aggressively maintains a continuous commitment to education across the demographic spectrum including public schools, post graduate degrees, continuing education, and certifications.

Thanks to our sponsors and partners, each year HARLEM WEEK and The Chamber awards grants in excess of $180,000 dollars in internships and scholarships to students (youth to seniors) attending colleges and universities throughout the country and beyond. We also provide grants to educational and training institutions, and community based organizations located in the Tri-State region.

INTERNSHIPS We are particularly proud of our highly successful summer internship program for high school and college students, which provides each student with unique opportunities to learn job skills that contribute to building the basis for their future success in the workforce. Interns are paired with highly skilled senior staff who develop challenging work plans and guide them to achieve strategic goals and objectives. They regularly participate in meetings with elected and appointed officials, and business and civic leaders to receive exposure to broader local, national and international issues. Lastly, they develop a network of contacts that prove to be indispensable in helping them to achieve their goals.

SCHOLARSHIPS Our annual awards have resulted in students of all ages and backgrounds attending colleges and universities across the country.

Our awardees are represented at State and City Colleges and Universities, historically Black Colleges and Universities, Ivy League institutions, as well as small specialty or boutique schools. Our scholarship recipients have gone on to achieve successful careers in law, medicine, politics, business, finance, engineering, education, technology, arts, culture, and more.

GRANTS Awarding grants to educational and training institutions and community based organizations allows these entities to expand their year round program offerings to meet the needs of the constituencies they serve. These entities often have a special focus on technology (closing the digital divide), arts and culture, technical training, workplace skills training, and sports and recreation sciences.

In addition to providing scholarships, internships and grants, GHCC annually identifies and salutes outstanding teachers and educators. We also encourage and promote the benefits of a college education through the production of the annual National Historic Black College Fair and Expo, which occurs each summer during HARLEM WEEK.

For 60+ years, Harlem has been known nationally and throughout the world as the home of the best in urban basketball games played in Harlem’s Rucker Park.

The Entertainers Basketball Classic (EBC) thrived under the fabled leadership and vision of its late CEO Greg Marius (who passed away in Spring of 2017). Greg assumed the mantle and management of Rucker Park and took the EBC to new and legendary heights. This sports classic, started years ago as one game between two rival New York Rap/Hip Hop moguls. EBC’s legacy continues as one of the most prestigious basketball tournaments in the region, building on the legend of the world renowned Rucker Park as the international nucleus of urban and summer basketball.

For the third year, HARLEM WEEK and NJPAC partnered to create a “cultural bridge” by promoting activities in both New York and New Jersey. Partnership events at NJPAC saluting and promoting HARLEM WEEK and the HARLEM/HAVANA Music & Cultural Festival included a two day outdoor concert series entitled Sounds of the City.

NJPAC’s Wells Fargo Jazz for Teens performed at HARLEM WEEK events including “A Great Day in Harlem” on July 29th and HARLEM DAY on August 19th.

International Initiatives Harlem/Havana Music & Cultural Festival 2018

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone CEO Blair Duncan are on hand at the Harlem/Havana Art & Photography Exhibit at The Mural Pavilion of Harlem Hospital Center.

On the evening of July 18th, Harlem/Havana received a warm welcome by Mayor De Blasio and the First Lady, as they hosted the Kick-off Invitational reception at Gracie Mansion. Music was provided by Cuban artist Chino Pons Y Su Irek Band as 1500+ guests celebrated a spectacular affair. Harlem and Havana musicians, visual artists, dancers and drummers were featured throughout the festival. Audiences were treated to live performances at The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, Jazzmobile, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Alvin Ailey Dance Center, National Jazz Museum in Harlem, and on the Harlem Summer Stage, “Summer in the City” and HARLEM DAY stages. Musicians representing Havana included Oyu Oro Afro-Cuban Dance Company, Chino Pons-Afro Cuban Band, Feeling Collective Afro Cuban Band and Dayramir Gonzalez & His All Star Havana Musicians. Musicians and artists representing Harlem included Bill Saxton, Alyson Williams, Marvin Sapp, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Ray Chew & The HARLEM WEEK All Star Band featuring Cheryl Pepsii Riley, Jeff Foxx Band, Jaambo Band, and Legacy R&B Group. Visual artists and photographers from Harlem, Havana, Puerto Rico, Brazil and the Dominican Republic were featured in the extremely popular Harlem/Havana International Art & Photography Exhibit at The Mural Pavilion of Harlem Hospital Center.

The art & photography exhibit was on display from August 4th and extended thru October 30th.

Direct from Havana, Cuba was the extraordinary life size image of Latin dancers by visual artist Jessica Angel at Harlem’s Raw Space Gallery. This dynamic photography exhibition called Liquid Heat captured the energy and passion of Cuban dance. Renowned Cuban Dancer Luanda Paul presented an immersive and interactive Cuban dance workshop and art program for youngsters 6-15 years old. The exhibition ran from August 21st thru September 7th.

Due to the success of the inaugural Harlem/Havana Music & Cultural Festival, at the request of Harlem Congressman Adriano Espaillat, HARLEM WEEK expanded its international initiatives to include marketing and promotions for the Dominican Day Parade on Sunday, August 11th, which annually takes place on the second Sunday of August during HARLEM WEEK. The parade has officially become a part of the HARLEM WEEK celebration embracing the Dominican culture.

Harlem/Havana Closing Gala at Floridita Harlem/Havana held its Closing Gala Reception on Wednesday, October 3rd at Floridita Restaurant (12th Avenue & 125th Street). This gathering was an opportunity for us to say thank you to the supporters of HARLEM/HAVANA and for our key associates to gather and relive some of the wonderful experiences we shared during HARLEM WEEK.

Floridita provided an abundant choice of tasty foods and beverages representing Havana. Live entertainment from Harlem was provided by the R&B group Legacy and the sounds of Havana came from Chino Pons Y Grupo Irek. In keeping with the HARLEM WEEK theme, Broadway Press Agent Irene Gandy was presented with the “2018 “Community within the Community” Saluting LGBTQ Award” and Andrew Reddick received the Joseph Roberts, Sr. Blackfrica Promotions Community Service Award”.

CBS-2 - is a long time partner and supporter of HARLEM WEEK. CBS has covered many HARLEM WEEK events and activities over the years and, in fact, has created special TV programs around HARLEM WEEK and the Harlem Jazz & Music Festival. HARLEM WEEK has enjoyed media coverage by CBS TV anchors Dana Tyler, Maurice DuBois and Otis Livingston. Fox-5 – Lew Leone, Fox 5 Vice President and General Manager, has been an active participant in and supporter of HARLEM WEEK for many years. NEW YORK ROAD RUNNERS: New York Road Runners is proud to partner with The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce on the annual celebration of HARLEM WEEK. NYRR mission is to help and inspire people through running. Through our participation in HARLEM WEEK activities, we encourage the local community to get moving and active at the Children’s Festival and the Elder’s Jubilee. The capstone event in our partnership is the Percy Sutton Harlem 5K Run/Walk. This event gives people from around the city, the region, the nation, and internationally unique opportunities to run or walk through the streets of Harlem while honoring the legacy of Percy Sutton.
