42nd Anniversary of HARLEM WEEK Our HARLEM WEEK 2016 theme was “Transforming the World: New Times, New Strategies.” The original leadership of the planning committee for HARLEM DAY in 1974 was comprised of Percy Sutton, Joseph Roberts Sr., Dizzy Gillespie, Marvin Kelly, Tito Puente, Tony Rogers, Rev. Wyatt T. Walker, Stephanie Francis, Maya Angelou, Larry Frazier, Hal Jackson, Frankie Crocker, Vivian Robinson, Voza Rivers, Ossie Davis, Joe Cuba, Nancy Wilson, Gloria Lynne, James Baldwin, Max Roach, Charles Rangel, Bill Tatum, Ruby Dee, Basil Paterson and Lloyd Williams, all of whom participated in the Ribbon Cutting at West 138th Street and 7th Avenue (7th Avenue was formally renamed in honor of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.), launching HARLEM DAY on Saturday, August 17th. Little did these planners and their committee members realize that this “one time” “one day” event, would, due to great response and demand, eventually increase in popularity to become a month-long happening that now includes over 112 events comprised of conferences, seminars, expos, sporting events, festivals, live music and entertainment, dance, vendors, movies, and outdoor markets attended by over 2.8 million persons in 2016. HARLEM WEEK is now unquestionably an internationally renowned brand with participants and visitors from around the block, the region, the country and the world. HARLEM WEEK has attracted a virtual who’s who in politics, arts, culture, sports, entertainment, religious leaders, business and celebrities including Presidents Bill Clinton, George Bush, Barack Obama, and the Honorable Nelson Mandela; Mayors Ed Koch, David Dinkins, Rudy Giuliani, Michael Bloomberg, and Bill de Blasio; David Rockefeller, Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Earl “The Pearl” Monroe, Arthur Ashe, Wilt Chamberlain, The Williams Sisters, Stephen A. Smith, Patrick Ewing, Celia Cruz, Bob Marley, Harry Belafonte, Tito Puente, Tony Bennett, Miles Davis, Gladys Knight, Frank Sinatra, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, The O’Jays, Usher, John Legend, Bill Cosby, Phylicia Rashad, Richard Pryor, Will Downing and Alicia Keys, just to name a few. This year as part of HARLEM WEEK’s international presentations, we created and presented the first Harlem/Havana Music & Cultural Festival. This initiative, chaired by Congressman Charles Rangel and co-chaired by NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo and NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio, included Havana dancers and singers from the JJ Folkloric Dance Company, Havana chefs, David Diaz and Raul Colon, fashion designers from Arte y Moda Cubano, celebrated Havana master artist Choco Salazar, as well as saxophonist Cesar Lopez Y Habana Ensemble and jazz pianist, Jorge Luis Pacheco Y Su Grupo. These Havana artists graced our HARLEM WEEK stages and were enthusiastically received by audiences throughout NY City, Newark, NJ, as well as HARLEM WEEK stages, in theaters, nightclubs, restaurants, churches and outdoor venues.

COMMEMORATIVE POSTERS
For 60 + years, Harlem is known nationally and throughout the world as the home of the best in urban basketball games played in Harlem’s Rucker Park. For the past years, the Entertainers Basketball Classic (EBC) under the leadership and vision of its CEO, Greg Marius, has assumed the mantle and management of Rucker Park thereby taking the EBC Professional Basketball Tournament to new and legendary heights. This global showcase (EBC) which started years ago as one game between two rival New York Rap/Hip Hop moguls has become one of the most prestigious basketball tournaments in the region. Greg Marius, and the entire team of the Entertainers Basketball Classic have done a magnificent job in maintaining and building on the legend of Rucker Park as the international nucleus of urban and summer basketball.

HARLEM WEEK 2017 Partnership Opportunities (Contact us now!) Be Part Of The Excitement. Grow Your Business. Promote Your Brand. Expand Your Reach NYRR QUOTE: New York Road Runners is proud to partner with The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce on the annual celebration of HARLEM WEEK. NYRR’s mission is to help and inspire people through running. Through our participation in HARLEM WEEK activities, we encourage the local community to get moving and active at the Children’s Festival and the Elders Jubilee. The capstone event in our partnership is the Percy Sutton Harlem 5K Run/Walk. This event gives people from around the city, the region and the nation internationally unique opportunities to run or walk through the streets of Harlem while honoring the legacy of Percy Sutton. The positive energy of this annual event truly embodies what HARLEM WEEK is all about: commemorating history, celebrating achievements, and inspiring others. —Michael Rodgers, Vice President, Development and Philanthropy We invite and encourage you to become a SPONSOR, CO-SPONSOR, PARTNER, EXHIBITOR, VENDOR, ENTERTAINER or SUPPORTER of HARLEM WEEK 2017 and/or other Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce 2017 exciting year round programs and activities. Some of our longstanding partners and sponsors share their experiences:
WBLS/WLIB/Hot 97 For us, HARLEM WEEK represents our past, present and future!
APPLEBEE’S QUOTE:
WBLS and WLIB were born in Harlem and have evolved into the regional brands that they are today.
Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar prides itself on a strong connection to all of our communities. This connection takes many forms across our region but none quite as intense as that which our annual HARLEM WEEK participation affords us. Although its very name belies its extended duration and extensive reach, sponsorship of and, participation in HARLEM WEEK’s many vibrant programs are important as it allows us to connect directly with a broad cross-section of our neighbors, with a proud sense of giving back to our community. —Ken Feldman, VP Marketing, Apple Metro. Inc.
THE NY DAILY NEWS QUOTE: HARLEM WEEK is important to me and our team at The New York Daily News because it keeps the history and culture of Harlem alive. In addition to the excitement with the street festivals on the key Saturdays and Sundays, HARLEM WEEK embodies every aspect of family, entertainment, economic progress, along with Health and Education that best serves the community. Yes, it’s the spirit of driving community engagement that makes HARLEM WEEK so special. As we all know HARLEM WEEK is really more like Harlem Month and for good reason. There are so many “community” oriented events that span the kick off at Gracie Mansion in July to the Percy Sutton Harlem 5k Run/Walk at the end of August. One last acknowledgement is the wonderful contribution of the Chamber to the Scholarship Fund. Great aspect of giving back to today’s youth! —Rudy Zaccagno, Vice President Advertising at New York Daily News

TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVE In 2015 HARLEM WEEK in partnership with Silicon Harlem, encouraged by Congressman Charles Rangel and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and other supportive institutions and individuals, created a series of educational events to help the young and the old to close the “digital divide” and successfully negotiate the digital age. As a follow up to ongoing discussions with artists and educators, HARLEM WEEK has given serious consideration to the role the arts do and will play in these technological times. It has been stated that – “the arts build the 21st century workforce” in this digital world. With that in mind, expanding the emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math), HARLEM WEEK, in partnership with Silicon Harlem features a series of events that is an annual focal point of a STEAM Initiative to help young and old close the “digital divide”. The initiative includes events and activities designed to demystify technology and encourage all to take part in the learning experience. In our second year of this STEAM initiative we are pleased to work with an ever growing list of partners to expand the initiative and its impact. The expansion of the STEAM initiative included how we along with our partners used social media and our websites to communicate our messages. We could see this growth in the social media impressions of HARLEM WEEK and the new creation of the HARLEM/ HAVANA music and cultural festival which numbered over 800 million. We are especially thankful to our partners Silicon Harlem, Congressman Charles Rangel, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, NY Daily News, Emmis Communications, NYC & Company, NYC Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment, NYC Dept. of Small Business Services, The City College of New York & Columbia University for their support of the STEAM initiative and their invaluable assistance in helping it grow to impact more members of the Harlem community and the Harlem’s of the world.

SCHOLARSHIPS, INTERNSHIPS & GRANTS OUR COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION HARLEM WEEK in concert with The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce aggressively maintains a continuous commitment to education across the demographic spectrum from public schools to postgraduate degrees and continuing education & certifications. Thanks to our sponsors and partners, HARLEM WEEK and the Chamber has, over the past two decades, directly awarded in excess of three million dollars in internships and scholarships to students (youth to seniors) attending colleges and universities throughout the country and beyond, as well as grants to educational and training institutions and community based organizations throughout the Tri-State region.
Internships We are particularly proud of our highly successful summer internship program for high school and college students, which provides each student unique opportunities to learn job skills that build the basis for their future success in the workforce. Interns are paired with highly skilled senior staff who develop challenging work plans and guide them to achieve strategic goals and objectives. They regularly participate in meetings with elected and appointed officials, business and civic leaders to get exposure to broader local, national and international issues. Lastly, they develop a network of contacts that prove to be indispensable in helping them to achieve their goals.
Scholarships Our annual awards have resulted in students of all ages and backgrounds attending colleges and universities across the country. Our awardees are represented at State and City Colleges and Universities, historically Black Colleges and Universities, Ivy League institutions, as well as small specialty or boutique schools. Our scholarship recipients have gone on to achieve successful careers in Law, Medicine, Politics, Business, Finance, Engineering, Education, Technology, Arts, Culture and more.
Grants Awarding grants to educational & training institutions and community based organizations allow these entities to expand their year round program offerings to meet the needs of the constituencies they serve. These entities often have a special focus on technology (closing the digital divide), arts & culture, technical training, workplace skills training and sports & recreation sciences. In addition to providing scholarships, internships and grants, GHCC also annually identifies and salutes outstanding teachers and educators. We also promote and encourage attending colleges and universities by producing the annual National Historic Black College Fair and Expo each summer during HARLEM WEEK.
