HARLEM WEEK’S “Historic Celebrations” included the NAACP 100th Anniversary. The NAACP held its national convention in NY City and celebrated at key events throughout the city including salutes in the Harlem community (where the NAACP was founded.) Delegates at the convention were invited to some of Harlem’s fine Restaurants and Nightclubs on Saturday, July 11th including; Londel’s, Sylvia’s, Showman’s and Lenox Lounge to kick off this centennial conference.

The Gala Reception Hosted by Mayor Bloomberg on The Great Lawn of Gracie Mansion kicked off the 35th Annual HARLEM WEEK celebration with over 2000 VIP's, Elected Officials, City leaders, Celebrities, and others in attendance. The evening featured entertainment from The National Jazz Museum in Harlem All-Star Jazz Band the cast of the “soon to be revived hit play “Dream Girls.” The theme of the reception was “Historic Celebrations” and the honorees for the evening included the late Duke Ellington as we celebrated the 110th Anniversary of his birth; the 50th Anniversary of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Company; Renowned TV News Anchor Chuck Scarborough who was celebrating 35 years of service at WNBC-TV4; Legendary music producer Tommy LiPuma and the late Latin Jazz Legend, Joe Cuba.

Each August during HARLEM WEEK at the Harlem Summer Stage Music Series Legends are inducted into the National Black Sports & Entertainment Hall of Fame. This year a special award was presented to a longtime friend and supporter of Harlem Jazz & Music Festival, Willie Walker, Building Manager of the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building for his positive work. The music legends who performed on this special night included The Manhattans; Ray, Goodman & Brown, Blue Magic, Me’lisa Morgan and Chuck Jackson.
In a salute to HARLEM WEEK, Legends of the Rucker Professional Basketball League were honored at a ceremony during halftime of the New York Liberty vs. Chicago Sky game at Madison Square Garden. The evening celebrated the rich history of the Rucker Professionals and the Madison Square Garden players & management who have participated in the Rucker Tournament since it’s inception in 1965.

HARLEM DAY MAIN STAGES HARLEM DAY served as a NY City musical tribute to the legacy of the late great Michael Jackson. Artists on all three (3) stages included a tribute during their performance to the late icon Michael Jackson. Those tributes invited the hundreds of thousands who attended to participate individually on the streets and sidewalks all across 135th Street from 5th to St. Nicholas Aves. The day included Live Radio Broadcasts from the KISS-FM hit program “Open Line”, and performances on the 5th Avenue stage by; Memphis the Musical, The Bill Saxton Quartet (courtesy of Jazzmobile), Casym Steel Orchestra, Seguida, Citizens of Contrary Knowledge, Apollo Heights, The Love Oasis Gospel Choir; On the St. Nicholas Avenue main stage by; The Apollo Showcase, DJ Webstar, Al B. Sure, Kristinia DeBarge, Fabulous, Chuck Jackson, Bobbi Humphrey and Ray Chew & the Crew All Star Band with a stellar closing performance by the Legendary Brian McKnight.

Harlem 5k: Health Walk-A-Thon: 1. And they’re off as 3,000 runners begin the 1st Percy Sutton Harlem 5K Run. 2. Reggie Idlett HARLEM WEEK, Mary Wittenberg, NY Road Runners, Zakia Feracho, NY Road Runners, Mike Preston, HARLEM WEEK and Naomi Griffin, Harlem Hospital promote the 5K Run. 3.
