The Gala Reception, hosted by Mayor Michael Bloomberg on the Great Lawn of Gracie Mansion, is the kickoff of the HARLEM WEEK festivities, and is traditionally the largest annual event at Gracie Mansion. This year, over 1,800 guests were in attendance. Among them were business leaders, elected officials, foreign diplomats, civic leaders, sports personalities, theater, movie, radio and television celebrities from throughout the New York region, across the nation and internationally. The evening included live entertainment from Broadway Theater provided by cast members of the 2012 Tony Award Winning musical “Porgy and Bess.� Awards were presented to Jackie Rowe-Adams, HARLEM WEEK Board Member and co-founder of Harlem Mothers S.A.V.E. for her efforts towards combating violence in our communities; NY CARIB NEWS, in celebration of their 30th Anniversary; and to Sylvia Woods, “The Queen of Soul Food�, celebrating the restaurant’s 50th year in business. The award presentation proved to be bittersweet as the restaurant’s icon (Sylvia Woods) passed away a few hours before the event, the reception was the first public announcement of her passing. A traditional highlight of the evening is the presentation of College Scholarships and Educational Grants by key HARLEM WEEK 2012 sponsors and members of The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce. Special thanks to the evening’s co-MC’s, Dave Price of Fox 5 TV’s Good Day New York and John Noel of NBC4
TV News. “A Great Day in Harlem,” the first public event of HARLEM WEEK 2012, attracted over 40,000 people to Ulysses S. Grant National Memorial Park throughout the day. This year’s event was themed “SUNDAY CLASSICS” and the day was a salute to broadcasting pioneer, radio icon and co-founder of HARLEM WEEK, Hal Jackson, who passed away earlier in the year.

In the first segment, attendees enjoyed “Family Unity Day” which featured Harlem Arts Alliance member performers from selected local arts & culture organizations. The second segment was an International Gospel Showcase featuring choirs from across the nation, Africa, and the Caribbean, with a moving performance by the renowned Bishop Hezekiah Walker and the Love Fellowship Choir. The very popular “Fashion Fusion” showcase, which embraced our 2012 theme, HARLEM: “Where the World Meets the World”, was the best yet, attracting regional and international models and designers. Following the fabulous fashion showcase, it was show time: “A Concert Under the Stars.” The concert was the day’s finale and tribute to the legendary Hal Jackson. Special presentations were given to Hal’s wife and radio partner “Debi B” by the NY Daily News and The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce. After the presentations, there were stellar performances saluting Hal given by R&B greats Cuba Gooding Sr., Alicia Meyers, Freddie Jackson, Alyson Williams with a special tribute to Hal from Bishop Hezekiah Walker. All of the performances were backed by Ray Chew and the Harlem Music Festival AllStar Band. The audience of 10’s of thousands was enthralled by the musical tribute. Special thanks to GHCC Board Members, Deon Levingston, WBLSFM, Voza Rivers, Harlem Arts Alliance, and our Artistic Director, Ray Chew for coordinating this not-to-be-forgotten production. Kudos also go to HARLEM WEEK Board Members Irene Gandy,

National Night Out is an event held across America intended to strengthen ties between law enforcement and local community residents and businesses. National Night Out has become a regular event on the HARLEM WEEK calendar as the Harlem community and the NY City Police Department and other law enforcement agencies come together to continue to build their relationships through a summer evening of entertainment, fun games and public safety educational information for the entire family. This year’s event took place in front of the 32nd Precinct and included visits from Mayor Bloomberg, City Council Speaker, Christine Quinn, NYPD Commissioner, Raymond Kelly, New York County DA Cy Vance, Council Member Robert Jackson, with featured performances from IMPACT Repertory Theatre Company and health and safety demonstrations from New Breed Life Arts and more.

Produced in concert with the extraordinary partnership of Imagenation, the incredible group which pays year round tribute to the contribution of the Diaspora to the world of film, the HARLEM WEEK Annual Outdoor Film Festival presented two incredible films this year - On August 18th, “Marley,” the definitive life story of Bob Marley, musician, revolutionary, and legend was shown. Prior to the film, there was a special tribute saluting legendary historic filmmaker Bill Miles. The featured film on August 25th was “Amandla: A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony,” telling the story of protest music in South Africa and capturing the images of the struggle against apartheid from the 1950s to 1990, when Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress came into power.

Sat. & Sun., Aug. 18th & 19th 12 Noon – 6:00 PM W. 135th Street bet. Malcolm X & A.C. Powell, Jr. Blvds. Audience: 30,000+ children, parents & family members attended the two-day festival. This weekend event continued to grow with children from across the region attending with their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, or guardians (no adult was allowed entrance without a child). Two exciting days of live entertainment, fashion shows, sports, games, exercise, health, education, technology, and fun. Children enjoyed face painting, portable recreation centers, exhibits, visits with famous Sesame Workshop characters “Cookie Monster” & “Elmo” and much more. As a part of the “Healthy Eating & Healthy Living” Initiative earmarked for children, there were special performances, exhibits, exercises, eating, and cooking demonstrations designed to instruct children and their families about the benefits of good nutrition and exercise.
HARLEM WEEK Board member, Tina McRae, chaired this event supported by board members Linda Wood-Guy and Jackie Rowe-Adams. They, along with their excellent management and production team, have made the 2-day Children’s Festival into one of the best summer family events in NYC.

The Percy Sutton Harlem 5K Run attracted over 3800 registered runners, accompanied by an additional approximately 1200 unregistered runners of all ages and from all parts of the tri-state region, nationally, and internationally.
The NYC Family Health “Walk for Peace In Our Communities” attracted over 1100 walkers from around the city who came out to support reducing violence in our city and beyond. The walk attracted religious organizations, unions, teachers, and family members of all ages. The message of “Peace In Our Communities” resonated with persons of all ages and backgrounds as we encouraged everyone to come together to take a personal stand against the violence that is claiming far too many of our citizens, especially our youth, nationwide. We were very pleased to see our largest field of runners ever and the many hundreds of walkers. Thanks to GHCC board members, Karen Witherspoon and Tony Rogers for their oversight, as well as to our partners at New York Road Runners, Mary Wittenberg, Peter Ciaccia, Paul Ortolano, Zakia Feracho and Corey Witmer for their ongoing leadership in this important family health initiative.

Basketball legends, enthusiasts, spectators, and young persons came from around the world to the legendary home of basketball in New York, the famed Holcombe Rucker Park. There, they saw the top High School stars of today and tomorrow in the Boys and Girls divisions and the legends who will shortly bring the game of basketball to new heights. The Golden Hoops Commissioner Bob McCullough, Sr., Harlem’s “Mr. Basketball”, continues to excel in producing this event and attracting the best teams from the New York region and beyond.

Studio Museum in Harlem opened its magnificent facility on Friday night, August 24th to present an outstanding variety of free and vibrant events, which were free to the public. During Uptown Friday!, the museum transformed its location to become a center of social activity in Harlem, featuring music, free admission, signature cocktails, drink specials, and creative food fare at the Atrium Café. Throughout the course of the evening there were opportunities to explore current exhibitions, enjoy free guided tours, browse, visit the Museum Store and purchase its incredible books, jewelry, t-shirts, and gifts. Harlemites, New Yorkers, and visitors danced to the sounds of DJs in the Studio Museum’s courtyard. A good time was had by all, and many who had not previously visited the museum are sure to come back again and again.

This annual event has become a staple in the community during HARLEM WEEK. It attracts hundreds from around the community who enjoy outstanding modern dance, ballet and African

The Mecca of urban basketball has historically been featured at the renowned Rucker Park. For the past few years, the Entertainers Basketball Classic has assumed the mantle of the Rucker Professional Basketball Tournament and taken its legend to new heights. This global showcase (Entertainer’s Basketball Classic) which started as a game between two rival New York rap/hip hop groups has become the most prestigious summer basketball tournament in the region.
