COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN

National Geographic Mixed-Use Facility

The existing building site is located in an open area of the Presidio district of San Fracisco. It is located near the intersection of Anza Avenue and Owen Street. There is an existing parking lot on the west side of the building across Anza Ave.

The historical style of the building is Mission Revival with the use of cement plaster exterior and a red clay tile roof. The building’s structure is steel post and beam with composite deck flooring supported by lightweight steel joists. The building has 2 stories over a basement story. The total interior building area is 6000 square-feet per floor. The building has a modern, fully automatic sprinkler system.

Green Luxury

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

PURPOSE

The concept of ‘Green Luxury’ will feature architectural columns blending with the Spanish Revival architecture while incorporating many historic paintings of the Natural Presidio. The digital paintings will blend in with neutral-cooler tones of green and blue to highlight the overall landscapes of the Big Lawns near the Presidio campgrounds and the San Francisco Bay itself.

CLIENT GOAL

The National Geographic Society wishes to develop a mixed-use building that will house their West Coast office headquarters as well as a retail space for visitors, a public exhibit space for art/photography/educational exhibits, and a café.

DESIGN INTENT

The National Geographic Museum will incorporate the use of children’s area to let kids boost their creative mindsets on letting their imaginations run wild through reading, drawing, painting, and coloring. This also applies to kids with learning disabilities such as autism, anxiety disorder, The ‘Green Luxury’ concept will shape its values by bringing sustainable design, custom furniture, and historic artifacts from the Presidio that helped the Presidio become a national landmark. Also, near the retail and loading dock will feature a state-ofthe-art bioluminescent river that resembles the views of the San Francisco Bay but, in a whole, new direction.

DESIGN APPROACH

The design features for my ‘Green Luxury’ concept will include red natural sandstones for structural safety in addition to the planters and fenestration for the bottom sill of the windows. Merchandise displays of artifacts taken from the 19th and 20th centuries from the Presidio and the indigenous materials Native Ohlones used to build temporary and permanent village sites including hunting, fishing, and gathering.

2ND FLOOR PLAN

In contrast, the second floor features carpet padding that seals out the noise from below for employees to work efficiently while being productive with their office work. Enhancing the workspace further will feature a customized, State-of-the-Art Leaf Clock for employees to understand the need for rejuvenation when they do no have time to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. The rest of the offices have a good amount of occupancy loading for 1-2 people while the conference room becomes the hub for employees to discuss improvements to help visitors come back to National Geographic with fresh ideas on new exhibits a few years down the road.

The exhibition rendering is a safe and quiet place for visitors to look around and see all the artwork displayed by many artists who have been creative and have represented outstanding accomplishments back in their days.

OPEN WORKSPACE

2nd Floor

Since the second floor incorporates the same wallpaper throughout office spaces, meeting and conference rooms, and the open workspace, the benefits of employees working for National Geographic become more diverse while demonstrating a productive setting for productive work and efficiency.

ADA COMPLIANT RESTROOM

The continuation of my ‘Green Luxury’ concept for the restrooms is taken into practicality with the use of ADA grab bars adjacent and behind the toilets to prevent people from falling over and losing their balance. The green ceramic subway tiles on the wall present a handmade feel for a refined artisanalinspired look with rustic details that provide depth to its edges.

Similar to the 1800’s inspired history of the Presidio from the exhibition, these ceramic tiles are also Spanish-made which every tile can be expressed through a modern countryside style with a mix of pattern and color offering softly hued solids and rustic finishes that catch a person’s eye for decorative details.

Level and Loft

Library and Atelier Renovation

The buildings are both nestled in the busy financial district of downtown San Francisco. AAU roughly has an enrollment of 7800 students. AAU has been an early pioneer of online learning and has been offering online courses since 2003. Because AAU is home to students around the world they have chosen to focus on creating spaces that encourage building community.

Our (Library and Atelier Team) Process:

• Strategic Planning

• Concept Development

• Design

Client’s Needs:

• Increased engagement for onsite and online students

NOTE: This was a group project where our library and atelier team worked on different areas to make it function for AAU students to get creative to improve the art community.

LIBRARY

The transformation of the Loft (Academy of Art Univeristy Library) becomes the focal point for a multi-functional hub that helps students with academic success, wellness, and community engagement. Previously, our AAU Library had no definition of functionality with a balance of utlizing all the resources available provided by the librarian in an outdated interior environment.

The Loft concept focuses on having a central bookshelf wall with seating, large glass rooms, biophilic curved furniture, huddle pods with semi-private areas with a state-ofthe-art wood cladding to attract the student’s and faculty’s attention as they enter the library through the breezeway, and a cafe with sleek counter design.

AAU’s mission for the library will impactful for meeting student’s educational needs especially online students gaining more opportunities to work with others onsite.

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN

Vallejo Villa

Affordable and Resident Housing

The Vallejo Residence is a 4-story home featuring a 1-bedroom apartment intended to be a Section #8 Rental Unit. The main focus of this project is to renovate the upper 3 levels that host the main occupant’s family of five. The project will consider classical and mid-century features to reflect the main occupants backgrounds and design sensibilities.

KITCHEN SPACE

The design goal for the kitchen is to create a coastal chic style. The overall layout of the kitchen space creates an inviting and entertaining environment to host and entertain guests. Colorful glass pendant lighting promotes an open and brighter ambience. The quartz countertops and a combination of upper and lower cabinetry offer a spacious, low-maintenance workspace designed to support both the preparation of large meals and casual, eat-in dining.

Balua Patthar

Senior Living Facility

33 Arjun Nagar is a 12-story senior living facility which features lush trees surrounded by natural grass on the outside and maximizing natural light and ventilation to improve senior’s health. Accessbility challenges must be awlays dealt with while providing enough heating, ventilation, and air conditioning to individuals who are feeling hot or unwell during the day and night.

The architecture of the senior living facility portrays a modern aesthetic towards a warmmuted color palette by incorporating various landscaping materials evoking a sense of peace and rejuvenation. By letting seniors relate to nature, the presence of biophilic design becomes a necessity for them to interact with others and live a healthy, meaningful life in the future.

This senior living facility sits in the gated community outside of downtown filled with tall trees and small shrubs near the central park with the amount of natural light from inside the facility by adding windows to make every living space ambient without the need of interior fixtures.

1ST FLOOR PLAN

The lobby becomes the main space when seniors first walk into this facility. Since the restrooms for both women and men are separated, they should be accessible with the adjacency of admission director and assistant offices. The library/living/lounge are added to the back of the first floor with the conference room at the front. While the conference room will be easily accessible for nursing staff, the post boxes and storage will have manageable operations. The north views of the senior living facility look out the quiet fields where seniors can take a walk without distrubances. On the south end of the facility, the views to the parking lot and the outdoor garden provide highquality, indoor, outdoor experience for seniors to improve their own health and interact with others. However, without having a full view of the outdoor garden to the west view, safety still becomes a priority for seniors with the help of making sure they are not left unattended.

PERSPECTIVE SKETCHES

This perspective rendering from the person’s viewpoint demonstrates the first impression when they walk into a senior living facility. Also, the grand staircase becomes the center-of-attention for welcoming guests into the reception and lobby area so that they can make themselves comfortable.

By doing this, seniors would not be left alone with no assistance and required support from the nursing staff.
