Harbor Country Day School: Built on a Legacy of Philanthropy & Virtue Harbor Country Day School was imagined in 1957 by a small group of conscientious parents, as a means to provide their children with an enriching alternative to public education. In their search for the ideal location for the small, independent, nonprofit school they soon would open, the families happened upon the famed Alice Throckmorton McLean estate on Three Sisters Road in Head of the Harbor. One year later, Ms. McLean’s esteemed mansion, affectionately known as “Tulip Knoll,” became the home to Harbor Country Day School’s inaugural class of 38 students.

Many familiar with the history of Alice Throckmorton McLean believe Harbor Country Day School was destined to inhabit Ms. McLean’s former estate. Ms. McLean, who lived a life of great virtue and philanthropy, made tremendous contributions to her St. James community and, in fact, to the world at large. She is, perhaps, best know for developing the American Women’s Voluntary Services (AWVS), a volunteer organization that provided support for World War II servicemen and veterans.

Ms. McLean’s legacy continues to live on throughout Harbor Country Day. Her spirit is alive and well within Harbor students, who are challenged every day to surpass expectations, view themselves in the larger context of their society and strive to become leaders of tomorrow. Ms. McLean’s devotion to giving back to her community is echoed in the school’s many community service programs.

All of these community outreach efforts contribute to the holistic education children receive at Harbor Country Day. The school aims to provide an education that is rich in both academics and life lessons – to give students an experience that not only prepares them academically, but that builds character and leadership skills as well.

Sixty years after the first class entered the doors of Tulip Knoll, the same spirit continues to drive the curriculum at Harbor Country Day. As independent Long Island’s only NYSAIS-accredited nonprofit, school for children in PK3 through eighth grade, Harbor Country Day fills a critical need for hundreds of Long Island families who are searching for something more for their children’s most formative years.

The Tulip Knoll Endowment

All gifts made to the Tulip Knoll Endowment are given in perpetuity and are invested to generate interest income. The school then draws from the interest income, while the original gifts remain untouched and continue to generate additional interest. In this way, the endowment fund becomes a source of permanent income for the school, above and beyond income generated by tuition, Camp Harbor enrollment, the Harbor Fund or other sources. In short, an endowment fund is a permanent, self-sustaining source of funding that ensures critical financial reserves will always be available.

An endowment of $6.5 million, apportioned as described herein, will afford the school a perpetual revenue stream of approximately $325,000 annually to help fund the critical needs outlined in the accompanying Strategic Plan 2018-2023.

Faculty Endowment $2.5 million Gifts made to the Faculty Endowment will enable Harbor to attract and retain the most exceptional, inspired teachers – those who embody the school’s mission to “cherish childhood, cultivate wonder and inspire confident learners and leaders.” This fund will support faculty salaries and benefits, as well as provide enrichment opportunities that enable faculty members to continually hone their teaching skills and embrace the most innovative and foremost teaching methods and tools. The Faculty Endowment also provides teachers with the resources they need to continue to provide students with an engaging, challenging, 21st century education.

Tuition Assistance Program $2 million Harbor believes that a diverse, inclusive community provides the optimal environment for learning and is key to fostering an innovative educational program.

Toward that end, Harbor has made a strong commitment to providing tuition assistance to families who cannot otherwise afford the full cost of tuition but whose children are capable of succeeding and thriving in Harbor’s intellectually challenging environment. As one can imagine, however, there is a significant cost associated with funding such an effort. Therefore, the Tuition Assistance Program is an essential part of the Tulip Knoll Endowment. This program will help fund the gap between the total cost of a Harbor Country Day School education and the portion that families in need who meet Harbor’s academic standards can afford. Income generated by the Tuition Assistance Program may also provide need-based merit scholarships to Upper School students who maintain average grades of 85 or higher.

General Endowment $2 million The General Endowment is critical to the school’s future sustainability, in that it provides a consistent and reliable source of supplemental funding for Harbor Country Day’s most fundamental operational needs. With a stable reserve for expenses such as classroom supplies and materials, classroom and building upgrades and emergency repairs to the building and grounds, the financial foundation of the school is ensured and the school’s leadership can invest more of its annual income on the resources necessary to keep its educational program at the cutting-edge.
