Note from the Chair of the Board

Dear Friends of Harbor,

Dear Harbor Country Day School Community,

The past year has been both gratifying and rewarding. The Harbor community is especially connective, and it is an absolute honor to have assumed the role of Head of School at a place I have come to know as the premier school on the North Shore! During this first phase of this professional transition, I often made careful observations, noting what was most meaningful to the constituents around me. I have been dedicated and committed to listening to ideas and processing the input I have received from so many colleagues, parents, alumni, and donors. Without your feedback, Harbor could not maintain its positive trajectory.

As we reflect on this past academic year, I am filled with immense gratitude and hope for the remarkable journey we have had together. With excitement in my heart, I am happy to share the remarkable achievements and experiences we have had under the inspiring leadership of our new Head of School, Andy Sperling.

A great deal of groundwork has been laid. We are so fortunate to have such a giving and caring school community. The magnitude of support my colleagues and I feel has been incredibly affirming. From the successes at the Annual Spring Benefit to the extraordinary energy from the PA, we have found ways to shine together. And while we are indeed standing poised for a successful and bright future, there is much work to be done. Our focus will continue to be on expanding the facilities while amplifying our mission. The faculty, staff, and leadership team are focused on professional development and programmatic growth. It is what great independent schools do to remain well-positioned for the next generation of students; we must never take our foot off the “gas pedal” that got us here – and we will always use our mission to guide us. As I stood and listened to the children at my first Harbor Commencement this past spring, I was struck by the authenticity of their words. They spoke with conviction and confidence and a sense of graciousness that I have rarely seen in young adolescents. Each graduate recognized their journey as unique and credited the Harbor faculty who guided them throughout their years here. Each child reminisced with Hawk pride and reminded us that friendships formed during these formative years are deeply impactful. Our kids fill their toolkits with social strategies and academic rituals that will enable them to succeed in high school and beyond. Meanwhile, each word spoken reminded me of just how blessed we are to be a part of such a nurturing culture. The fall will bring rejuvenation and joy to campus! I’m eager to begin this second of many chapters leading and as a member of the Harbor faculty. I will be teaching an upper-school math class this year. I am excited to get back into the classroom where I have formed the most rewarding connections during my 30+ year tenure in education. Being with the kids in this more formal capacity will provide me with opportunities to gain firsthand knowledge of where our students exist academically on the mathematics learning continuum. It will also create a unique chance for me to fully embrace the chance to inspire confident learners and leaders at Harbor. Thank you for your generous support and for contributing so thoughtfully. With appreciation,

Andy Sperling Head of School 4

Harbor Highlights • 2022 – 2023

Andy joined us as Head of School, and from the very first day, the Harbor community embraced him with open arms. It is not just a community we have here; it’s a family, and Andy became an integral part of this family, fostering an environment where every member thrives and flourishes. Throughout this year, we have witnessed numerous small building projects come to life, further enhancing our school’s environment. These improvements are a testament to our commitment to providing the best learning spaces for our students. Moreover, I am thrilled to announce that we are on the brink of breaking ground on some significant building projects, which we hope will commence this academic year. These developments will elevate our school’s capacity to nurture young minds and create lasting memories for future generations. One of the highlights of this year has been watching the Class of 2023 grow, learn, and mature into outstanding individuals. As a father of two Harbor graduates, I can attest to Harbor’s profound impact on shaping our children’s futures. Our mission, “Harbor cherishes childhood, cultivates wonder, and inspires confident learners and leaders,” has been brought to life through the accomplishments and character of these exceptional young adults.

Dear Harbor Community

Dear Harbor Community

Letter from the Head of School

Speaking of our mission, I want to emphasize the crucial role of the Harbor Fund in making these transformative experiences possible. Your contributions to The Harbor Fund help us to bridge the gap between operating expenses and tuition revenue and provides for events such as the mesmerizing Spring Musical, Annie! These enriching experiences are invaluable in shaping our students’ holistic development and fostering their creativity and talents. As we embark on another promising academic year, I am filled with anticipation for the future of our Harbor family. With Andy’s leadership at the helm of the school and your unwavering support, I am confident that we will continue to cultivate a nurturing environment that encourages wonder and empowers confident learners and leaders. Thank you for being an integral part of this family, for your generosity, and for making Harbor Country Day School the exceptional institution it is today. Together, we have accomplished so much, and I am convinced that, together, we will soar even higher. I cannot wait to see what this year holds for our Harbor family. With warmest regards,

The Harbor Fund Update: 2022 - 2023

How The Harbor Fund Supports Harbor Country Day School

What is The Harbor Fund? It is an annual fundraising campaign that directly supports the school’s programs—and your children— this academic year.

How much should I give? We simply ask that you do your best within your financial means. Every gift, of every amount, is appreciated and valued.

Why is The Harbor Fund necessary? It is necessary because tuition income is not enough to cover our annual expenses. In fact, nearly one-third of our expenses are not covered by tuition and must be funded through other means, such as The Harbor Fund.

How do I make my gift? We accept gifts in the form of personal checks, credit cards, and stock. You may mail it to the school office, make a gift on the school’s website, or call the advancement team at (631) 584-5555.

Who gives to The Harbor Fund? Parents, alumni, trustees, faculty, staff, and friends are all asked to contribute. This past year we saw an overall increase in parent participation numbers and 100% of our faculty, staff, and trustees made gifts.

Harbor Fund, Parent's Association, Gifts, Etc., 19.0%

Revenues Summer Programs, 13.3%

Is my gift tax-deductible? Yes, contributions to The Harbor Fund are fully taxdeductible.

How is The Harbor Fund used? It supports technology, professional development of our faculty, classroom programs, the performing arts, athletics, and maintenance of the school’s building and grounds. What is our goal this year? Our goal this year is for 100% of our families, as well as 100% of our faculty, staff, and trustees, to make their own gift by June 30, 2024.

Thank you for your support! Summer Programs, 8.3%

Dear Harbor Community, I am reaching out as a follow-up and latest update on the building expansion project. I want to acknowledge that the delays have been significant. That said, it is your sustained support that has enabled us to forge ahead. Since the last time we were able to share information, we have recently overcome a significant hurdle. Based on a shift in the direction of the exterior design, we are now optimistic that we have carved a formal path to putting shovels in the ground. And while we have needed to regain a bit of momentum, we are also confident that a new version of the project will create opportunities for us to move forward with intentionality. The following is a detailed list of essential characteristics that we shared with our architect once we determined the need to pivot the plans: •

Maintain the integrity of the interior spaces from the previous iteration.

Honor the vision of John Cissel and the dedication that went into the planning process.

Use a nimble approach to re-imagining the building structure as a means to maximize fiscal responsibility and sustainability.

Ensure that the architectural elements take cues from our Tulip Knoll heritage.

Enhance the current front parking lot, add a small auxiliary parking lot adjacent to the Barn, and create new parking spaces along with a turnabout in the rear of the property designated for buses (both drop-off and pick-up).

Focus on spaces that fully embody our School’s mission.

Maximize efficiency while also finding opportunities to add inspiration and even a bit of a “wow factor” that speaks to who we are as a community.

Based on these areas of focus, we are delighted to share that the building location will be moved to where the current upper school and library currently stand. As a result, that structure (built in the 1980s) would be demolished in lieu of a stately manor home wing that will accommodate all previously planned spaces. The only exception to this is our plan to renovate the Harbor Dining Room and have it remain in its current location. Finally, we are pleased to share that this new building plan will also include a beautiful music and choral room adjacent to the community gathering space. This overall design shift will create several advantages and opportunities for Harbor, particularly those related to reduced costs. Most importantly, however, this modified proposal has already been well-received by members of the Head of the Harbor Village Board. As we forge ahead, we will be sharing progress with greater frequency and regularity so that the Harbor community at large can begin to anticipate a formal start date. Thank you for your commitment to Harbor’s growth. Your unwavering patience and generosity have forged the very foundation of our future. With appreciation,

The Parents’ Association is dedicated to promoting a sense of community, facilitating communication between Harbor and its families, and raising funds for programs and events that enrich and enhance school life. Parents’ Association participation is an amazing opportunity to get to know other families, experience a slice of Harbor students’ school lives, and become involved in the life of Harbor. The group meets on a monthly basis. For more information about the many ways parents can contribute, the Parents’ Association coordinators may be reached at parentsassociation@hcdsny.org. Below is a list of events and programs that are typically sponsored by the Parents’ Association. Annual Spring Benefit The Parents’ Association’s major fundraising event is the annual Spring Benefit, which is an exciting and elegant evening for parents, alumni, trustees, friends, faculty, and staff. The event includes live and silent auctions, dancing, dinner, and open bar. Live and silent auction items are donated by the Harbor community and many local merchants who support our mission. Other highlights of the evening include Harbor’s Own Budding Artists Collection and the "Fund-A-Grant" auction, which gives attendees an opportunity to donate directly to specific school initiatives at a designated level of support. Previous Fund-A-Grant items have included new student iPads, SMART boards, technology advancement, science lab equipment, physical education and recess equipment, and professional development. Book Fair The Book Fair celebrates the love of reading with our children. Each student may purchase books from the Book Fair during school hours. In addition, in an effort to enrich the classroom and school libraries, we promote the Teacher’s Wish List program, enabling teachers to select desired books for their classroom libraries. Parents have the opportunity to purchase these books for the school, and an acknowledgment of the family’s generosity is affixed to the inside of the book. Family Fun Night Family Fun Night is a great evening of family fun, challenges, and healthy competition, with ‘heart-pounding’ activities for all ages to enjoy. All students and their families are invited to come,

16

Harbor Highlights • 2022 – 2023

bring their best game and/or their best cheering voice and enjoy! This event is typically held off the Harbor campus at a sports facility. Food and refreshments are served. Gingerbread Extravaganza All students are invited to take part in making delicious edible gingerbread houses during Harbor’s annual Gingerbread Extravaganza. Gingerbread materials are bought fresh from a local bakery, with the houses assembled and ready for decorating. This event is a favorite of all students, as they relish this opportunity to explore their inner architects and designers. Trunk or Treat Trunk or Treat is a cherished, longstanding Harbor tradition. All students and their families are invited to arrive in costume to enjoy a safe and frightfully fun-filled time trick-ortreating at Harbor Country Day School’s safe "neighborhood." Children also enjoy fun, games, and story-telling in the school gym. Harbor Closet The Harbor Closet is a collection of gently used uniforms that have been donated by Harbor families. It is open to all families throughout the year, and families are encouraged to take what they might be able to use and donate what they no longer need. Parents’ 2023 - 2024 Association Tri-Chairs
