LOCAL FOOD GUIDE

Letter from the Editor When someone asks me what my favorite restaurant here is, there’s not really one straight answer I can give them. There are layers to that answer, you see. There’s my downtown favorite from my years at Penn State, but there’s also my favorite place for a more sophisticated bite. Then there’s my childhood favorite, and the place that has my favorite staff, and the one that brews my favorite beer, and—you get the picture. I’m a locavore through and through, and proud of it. Luckily, as the Managing Editor of HappyValley.com, I finally have an outlet to answer that question properly, and this Food Guide is it. The thing is, the food and drink culture of Happy Valley deserves the long answer. Not only are we brimming with all sorts of amazing places to eat and drink, but more than that, those places are run by locals with their own unique stories that make them all the more special. Sure, we have more than our fair share of chain restaurants, too. But locally owned, locally sourced businesses are our bread and butter. They’re one of the things that makes Happy Valley so special, and they’re a huge part of the happy. In this year’s issue, we’re telling some of those stories: the true local favorites that keep it local from farm to table, the best locally-made beers and wines, what’s new and delicious in town, and so much more. Whether you’re a local yourself, a Happy Valley loyal who loves coming back, or a first-time visitor, this Guide is your #1 key to local eating. Consider it our way of saying that you can’t have just one favorite place to eat here—you have one big, happy family of favorites!

Gigi’s Southern Table

Locavores, Rejoice! Happy Valley Restaurants Steeped in Local Loyalty By Blake Burfield Happy Valley is a place of local tradition and loyalty like no other. Local lore is the heart, soul and backbone of our community, and our food culture is the perfect example of that. Ask any local what their favorite restaurant is, and they’ll passionately rattle off a list while also telling you the best things to get at each place. And nine times out of ten, it won’t be chain restaurants that they’re naming. But what defines a true “local favorite” anyway? Sometimes it’s the place that’s been there longer than anyone can remember. Sometimes it’s the place with one particularly famous dish. Other times, it’s the restaurant whose products are local to their very core. You see, local ingredients tend to stand out. The freshness and superior flavor of local meats, dairy, fruits and veggies speaks for themselves, and— especially if you’re used to run-of-the-mill ingredients—they’ll leave you 4

LOCAL FOOD GUIDE

wanting to come back for more. But beyond the quality of the ingredients, there’s just something big to be said for restaurants that take the time and care to give their patronage to other local producers. It is the very essence of Happy Valley, and it’s just one of the many reasons these restaurants have cemented their places as local favorites.

Harrison’s Wine Grill A pioneer of the local ingredient movement, Chef Harrison has been serving a locally sourced menu since 2001 when Tait Farms’ Farmer Mark showed up at his kitchen door with a crop of fresh, organic green beans. Harrison’s was also a founding member of Buy Fresh Buy Local Centre County in 2005. And while many restaurants define “local” as anything that comes from within 2.5 hours, Harrison’s works hard to support growers and producers specifically from Centre County or a neighboring county. The dinner menu boasts no less than 15 locally sourced dishes, with icons beside each to easily identify all the local goodness. It doesn’t get much better than the Local Beef Special and Local Salad or Side—two permanent, market price menu items that constantly change to reflect what’s fresh and available at the moment. Just ask your server what cut and preparation of beef, or local produce side/salad they’re offering that day.

Otto’s Pub & Brewery Whether it’s meat, beer, vegetarian, or anything in between—Otto’s does it right, and they do it as local as local gets. With nearly 40 local food and

with local Fasta pasta and Amish cheeses, or the Hogonator pizza topped with Hogs Galore bacon, pepperoni and sausage, and feel your life change forever. Otto’s even stays local-loyal on the brewery side. Don’t leave without a taste of their Keewaydin hard cider, made from Kunes Farm apples.

Barrel 21 If you get it right the first time, why stop there? Otto’s opened its sister establishment, Barrel 21, in 2015, and it’s keeping the local philosophy going with an exciting spin. Executive Chef Chris Mohr—a graduate of both Penn State and the Culinary Institute of America in New York—honed his craft cooking in Phoenix, New York and Disney World before (luckily for us) settling back in State College. And at Barrel 21, Mohr uses Central PA’s own local resources to serve up a fusion of unique, upscale flavors from around the country and globe. You’ll find local products in everything from the to-die-for Charcuterie and Cheese made up of Penn State meats and Goot Essa cheeses, to the Penn State Creamery ice cream in the Poached Pear Baked Alaska. Even on the distillery side, Barrel 21 uses local ingredients like rye and corn, and Keewaydin apples for their famous Apple Eau de Vie brandy.

Gigi’s Southern Table Harrison’s Wine Grill beverage partners, it’s a challenge to find anything on the menu that isn’t made of something locally sourced. All it takes is one taste of Otto’s food to be convinced of the difference that local ingredients make. Try the buffalo chicken mac and cheese made

The strong focus on ingredients drives the quality of the delicious southern comfort food at this State College gem, located on West College Ave. The folks at Gigi’s like to say that they “treat fresh local products with the proper respect,” and it’s no empty promise. Locally made Fasta pasta is the base of Gigi’s seriously delicious pasta dishes—one being the popular Coastal Pasta, which is topped with clams, local bacon, onion and creamed corn.

The Louisiana Gumbo is truly out of this world, made with local andouille sausage and chicken, and anyone who’s had it will tell you that it is gumbo the way it’s meant to be. The farm-to-table experience at Gigi’s is tangible, and it’s one of the many reasons this restaurant is a must-visit.

The Field Burger and Tap The Field has risen to the certified local favorite status in record time. One of its mottos is that local food just tastes better, and it’s why they’re so committed to using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. Burgers are truly the star of the menu here, and they are hand-formed daily using a secret house blend of sirloin, chuck, brisket and short rib. Try any of the wide variety of burger combos and you’ll instantly understand the hype. Another item you’ll often hear about around Happy Valley is the famous Field Shake. All six flavors are hand-spun using Penn State Creamery ice cream, and can be ordered either “classic” or “hard” to suit any preference. No matter what you order here, you’ll be impressed by the quality, quantity and taste.

Dante’s Restaurants Opening a business that becomes a local favorite doesn’t just happen by chance—and opening seven of them definitely doesn’t. Andy Zangrilli, owner of Dante’s Restaurants and Nightlife, has a winning formula, and the quality of his restaurants’ ingredients has everything to do with it. The family of popular restaurants includes Liberty Craft House, The Deli, Inferno, Mario’s and Hi Way Pizza, along with Bar Bleu and the Saloon. The menus at each place may be totally different, but they all share the

same heart: a 100% commitment to from-scratch foods made with fresh and local ingredients. Everything—and we mean everything—is house-made from scratch. The signature dough and sauces at Hi Way Pizza? From scratch. The pasta at Mario’s? From scratch. The breads that make up The Deli’s famous sandwiches? You guessed it: from scratch. And the locally, sustainably sourced ingredients make Dante’s foods a one-two punch.

The Nittany Lion Inn This historic local landmark on Penn State’s campus is primarily known for its beautiful colonial-style building, but inside it is much more than just a hotel. It also houses two restaurants: The Dining Room as a fine dining option, and the casual pub-style Whiskers. In true Penn State fashion, the Nittany Lion Inn operates on a philosophy of sustainability and agriculture, so local food is a necessity for the chefs at both restaurants. They use only products made in-house or from neighboring producers, from vegetables and eggs to meat and fish. Meat and seafood dishes are a favorite at The Dining Room, and it’s no wonder when they consist of herb roasted free range chicken, Jamison Farm lamb, grass-fed beef and sustainable wild-caught seafood. There’s no loss of quality at the more casual Whiskers, either, where you can get delectable fish and chips made with local trout. Even the chicken quesadilla here is made up of a locally made flour tortilla with Berkey Creamery sour cream on the side.

and bottled wines—sold both by the bottle and by the glass—and a classic café-style menu of soups, salads, wraps and more. The menu also features a cheese and cracker plate and charcuterie plate, both of which are a match made in heaven with wine. Wine and Café on the Park has quickly become a local favorite, and its outdoor seating and waterfront location are sure to make it even more popular in the warmer months to come.

By Holly Swanson Happy Valley continues to grow its reputation as an emerging foodie paradise, and the new construction and growth of the region has more than risen to meet these demands. Here’s our list of the best new restaurants around town.

Wine and Cafe on the Park

325 W. High Street What used to be just Cafe on the Park has gotten a distinct upgrade under new owners Elwin Stewart and Barb Christ, whom you may already know as the owners of Happy Valley Vineyard and Winery. It’s no surprise that they’ve brought the thing they do best to this new venture, turning it into a combination café and wine bar. It offers Happy Valley Winery’s own grown 8

John’s Shanghai

Talleyrand Tavern

211 West High Street, Bellefonte After finding lasting success with The Governors’ Pub—a Bellefonte staple—owners Dave and Sue Brockway opened a small bar next door. The casual atmosphere welcomes both locals and travelers to enjoy its Pennsylvania-brewed draft and bottle selection along with bar fare.

Above the Valley

559 North Pennsylvania Avenue, Centre Hall With a history that dates back to the early 1900s, the former site of the Mount Nittany Inn is now owned by Kit Henshaw and Harrison Schailey, known locally as the proprietors of Harrison’s Wine Grill and Catering. With four tiered levels of rental space for special occasions (think weddings, graduations, and conferences), the breath-taking views of Central Pennsylvania are matched by the award-winning, locally sourced menu.

John’s Shanghai

312 West Beaver Avenue, State College Looking for an authentic pork juicy bun (known as soup dumpling to most of us)? There’s a place for that. Building upon 25 years of success in New York City, John’s Shanghai is now open on Beaver Ave., bringing with it a large offering of Shanghai-based food like General Tso’s Chicken, Spicy Shanghai Bok Choy Salad, and cold noodles with sesame sauce. John’s also features a wide selection of soups (wonton, noodles with spicy red beef, and minced chicken with corn for two), and seafood, which fills a void in Happy Valley. Their large seafood menu includes shrimp—sauteed, crispy, with or without broccoli, cooked with chili miso and celery—or a whole fish in

spicy bean sauce, and scallops in garlic sauce. There’s basically at least one meal at John’s Shanghai that can satisfy any discerning palate.

Sauly Boy's

124 South Allen Street, State College What’s been missing from Downtown State College? A gourmet hot dog restaurant, of course! Featuring chili cheese dogs (with pico de gallo and melted cheddar), fries with house-made ranch, and a beer dog topped with a dill pickle, Sauly Boy’s has already made a name for itself among hot dog connoisseurs. And if the awesome dogs aren’t enough for you, check your receipt while you’re waiting for your order. The Wi-Fi password is printed right there, so you can Instagram your order as soon as it comes out.

Tazzah Fresh

214 East Calder Way Featuring build-your-own salads or indulging in their pre-made fare like The Fisherman (served on a bed of brown rice and quinoa and topped with tomatoes, carrots, and our spicy cilantro-lime shrimp), and the True Lion, which is a hearty salad that includes beef, turkey bacon, onions, and eggs. Although this type of salad usually comes with the standard oil and dressing.

Champs Sports Grill Downtown

139 South Allen Street, State College The downtown location for State College favorite Champs has been teasing us with “almost openings” since last winter, but—after a few false starts—

10

it’s finally ready. Following extensive renovations to what was formerly a Chili’s, Champs reopened in late January by hosting midget wrestling. Although that atmosphere might be a little outside the norm, the line outside suggests that Champs has found its niche.

Peace, Love, and Little Donuts

421 East Calder Way, State College There’s a tiny storefront tucked along Calder Way that’s poised to make a big splash on the State College doughnut scene. What was formerly occupied by Gamers Arena, which went out of business last summer, will soon be taken over by Peace, Love, and Little Donuts, a Pittsburgh-based franchise that now has locations in six states. Although a grand opening date hasn’t yet been announced, the shop promises to deliver its fan-favorite donuts, like Samoa, apple pie, and chocolate chocolate chip.

Little Food Court

250 East Calder Way, State College Filling the need for a variety of authentic Asian food in one location, the Little Court will allow foodies the opportunity to sample from a large offering of standard Chinese, Malaysian, and Taiwanese menus. Replacing the popular Rotelli, this new restaurant should open in spring 2017.

Downtown State College Is Your One-Stop Eatery By Rebecca Adelmann Many Happy Valley buffs would argue that the true Happy Valley experience comes from a stroll around downtown State College, where great food and great atmosphere can be found just about anywhere you look. By downtown, we mean the magical loop of College and Beaver Avenues. Here you’ll find eateries for any meal of the day, any occasion, and any palate. We’ll introduce you to just a few of the many classics. Start your morning off right with a famous waffle from The Waffle Shop and wash it down with a glass of their fresh-squeezed orange juice. In addition to their killer waffles, The Waffle Shop also has delicious French toast, eggs, and pancakes. Their service is super friendly and super quick. The Waffle Shop has been a State College staple for students and residents for decades.

"The true Happy Valley experience comes from a stroll around downtown State College, where great food and great atmosphere can be found just about anywhere you look." Is brunch more your thing? Well, then head over to Sowers Harvest Café on East Beaver Ave. Try their omelets or a gooey cinnamon bun. Their pancakes are expertly crafted and garnished with your choice of fruit and whipped cream. If you decide to go with the pancakes, though, make sure to order them before 11 a.m.—otherwise they’ll vanish from the menu. The generous portions at Sowers give you a serious bang for your buck. For lunch, stop by The Deli, another State College favorite since 1973. Go with any of their famous New York-style deli sandwiches, like the Triple Decker Deli Reuben or the Grilled Jumbo Cheese made with your choice of heavenly local cheeses. The Deli’s Original Baked Potato Soup is another favorite, packed with cheddar, bacon and sour cream, and good to the last drop. The menu here is huge, diverse, and it’s all made with a from-scratch, local philosophy! Another great lunch spot can be found on East College Ave. at The Tavern. The Tavern provides a very welcoming colonial-style atmosphere and a great lunch menu. With tons of signature sandwiches and salads, you can’t go wrong! Grab a classic Caesar Salad or a turkey bacon deluxe with unlimited sides. That’s right, unlimited sides. Top off your lunch with a slice of the Original Tavern Cheesecake with a strawberry or raspberry topping. This old family recipe has been a famous State College delicacy since 1948. Webster’s Bookstore Café is a State College gem tucked away on East Beaver Ave. Webster’s has a great selection of vegetarian, vegan, 22

Allen Street Grill and gluten-free options. Try the delicious black bean burger or hummus. They’re made in-house! Being that the café is located in the lower level of a bookstore, it offers a winning combination of a unique, fun and cozy dining atmosphere. The list of teas and coffees here is as long as it is fresh and delicious. Espresso, Americano, Macchiato, Cappuccino, 90 varieties of tea—you name it, Webster’s has it! Get a truly authentic international experience at Herwig’s Austrian Bistro. Don’t be intimidated by their extensive menu or the pronunciations. Herwig’s friendly staff is there to guide you through your ordering experience. They’re great at making suggestions! Their traditional Austrian meals and atmosphere will transport you to another continent. Their dessert menu has something for everyone, and you don’t want to leave without trying one. Try their dark chocolate bacon cheesecake or their Nutella and bacon puff pastries! Spats Café & Speakeasy brings the spirit of New Orleans to downtown State College. This Cajun-themed restaurant offers a wide variety of meals from the heart of Louisiana. Start with an order of fried local green tomatoes with sweet onion tomato marmalade and fresh sour cream. Don’t forget to cleanse your pallet with some of their lemon sorbet before you try their classic Creole Jambalaya with Gulf shrimp, chicken, house-smoked andouille sausage and tomato. Their gluten free Voodoo BBQ Gulf Shrimp and Mid-Atlantic Scallops on cheese grits and collards are the perfect taste of the authentic New Orleans experience. If you’re looking for a nice night out, the Allen Street Grill is the place to be. They have a prime selection of gourmet appetizers, awesome pasta, and impressive meat and seafood entrees. Try their classic Chesapeakestyle crabcakes, or a tender and delicious Certified Angus steak, broiled and topped with béarnaise butter. Then finish off your meal with a housemade slice of pie or cake. And if happy hour is more your speed, the Allen Street Grill offers great deals, including $1 off craft beers and 1/2 off well liquors, signature sangrias and select wines. Downtown State College is special for a lot of reasons, but the inviting atmosphere and variety of awesome dining establishments are two of the big ones. So whether you’re a student, resident, or just passing through, downtown State College is your one-stop dining destination.

More than Just a Fad: The Brunch Revolution

How Local Restaurants Have Embraced the Brunch Trend to Make It Last By Holly Riddle Brunch is hardly a new idea, but as it becomes more accessible to those living outside the realm of posh eateries and hefty menu prices, it has been experiencing a revitalization. Now, there’s no need to be in a big city or to pay top dollar for a fantastic brunch experience. Top restaurants in destinations such as State College are jumping on the bandwagon and offering up world-class brunch menus that easily fit every taste. Whether you’re looking for a hearty, belly-filling breakfast, or a light and elegant start to your day, or even a cure for a wicked hangover, you can find it all. Gardens Restaurant at The Penn Stater is a great choice if you want to try a little bit of every brunch option, as the all-you-can-eat buffet is filled to the brim with the most humble to the most extravagant traditional brunch items. From scrambled eggs and stuffed toast, to grilled swordfish, smoked salmon, pate and caviar, it’s all right there. There’s even a cheese station and an omelet station. Top it all off with a complimentary glass of champagne or a mimosa. It’s the perfect way to start your day. The Dining Room at the Nittany Lion Inn also offers an upscale

Sunday brunch buffet at Barrel 21 24

LOCAL FOOD GUIDE

The Naked Egg Café brunch buffet, Sundays 9:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. Always offered throughout the year, it features a carving station, omelet station, waffles, smoked salmon and more of your favorite breakfast items. For a more relaxed atmosphere, but similarly amazing flavors, The Field Burger & Tap at Toftrees Resort may be what you’re looking for. The brunch is a favorite of resort guests and locals alike, with the house-made Bloody Marys receiving rave reviews. The nearby American Ale House is just down the street, with more unique options, like veggie breakfast casseroles and yogurt brulees. The Naked Egg Café is also known for its out-of-the-box brunch options. They re-do the traditional chicken and waffles, with their Chix and Waffle (chicken tenders on a Belgian waffle covered in gravy). They also have a spin on the traditionally British breakfast of beans and toast, with their Bean Town, which is chorizo, baked beans and two eggs with toast. You’ll also, of course, find a true Pennsylvanian’s favorite breakfast meat— scrapple. If you just can’t roll out of bed on a Sunday morning, and would prefer your brunch plans to take place on a Saturday, go to Gigi’s Southern Table. Their brunch even extends to 3 p.m., so you can hit the snooze button a few times. Breakfast meets Southern flavors, with options like fried chicken, gumbo and Cajun Eggs Benedict. You can also head out to the bar again Sunday morning for Barrel 21’s brunch option, which is both award-winning and quite affordable. You can even just show up for the Bloody Mary bar only (where you’ll be drinking Barrel 21 vodka, of course). Otherwise, there’s a breakfast pastries buffet, cold buffet, hot buffet and dessert buffet. The menu items change up each week, so there’s always something new to try.

How the Friends & Farmers Online Market Changed the Way I Shop by Diana Walker Griffith As Marketing Manager of the Friends & Farmers Cooperative, I am a fully invested shopper of the Online Market. But I didn’t start out that way. At first, I bought only a few items a week—foods I that felt safe to try, like garlic, potatoes and spinach—and spent no more than $12-15 on each order. Then I started trying farm-made soups and entrees on the Online Market, discovered applesauce like my grandma made, and a drink mixer from Tait Farm Foods that I’d never heard of before: fruit shrub. The Friends & Farmers Online Market has changed the foods I shop for. It’s transformed my pantry and my refrigerator. My pantry now stores small-batch, hand poured bottles of dressing from Village Eatinghouse; jars of applesauce and apple butter from Way Fruit Farm; nectarine jam and raisin & rhubarb chutney from Trifolia Natural Products & Botanicals. Open my fridge and you’ll find bottles of beet and pear shrub, drinkable goat milk yogurt, chocolate goat milk, cheese from local farms, fresh angel hair pasta and tomato sauce from Fasta & Ravioli Co., and an amazing mix of salad greens from Tait Farm. Tait Farm has greens all winter long! I’m eating more from my fridge than ever before. At the conventional grocery store, I walk past the packaged food displays, uninterested. Shopping the Online Market is a process of discovery. As one of our loyal customers, Katey Wilber, puts it, “I had no idea how much flavor lettuce had until I bought local in-season lettuce.” Shopping for local food is not only fun, it teaches you how good fresh food tastes, and makes meal planning more of a pleasure. Now that I’ve made a habit of shopping for fresh, local food online, I’m finding more of the foods and other products that I want and need, and am doing most of my food shopping from the Online Market. I’ve learned that when I eat fresh foods, I feel so satisfied that I’m actually eating less food. Friends & Farmers is working toward putting the doors on a brick-andmortar store where you can buy locally grown and produced food. Until then, it’s fun and convenient shopping from local farmers and producers— online from noon Friday through noon Monday—then picking it up or having it delivered on Tuesdays. The Online Market offers two pick-up locations: The Meetinghouse on Atherton at 318 S. Atherton, or State College Friends School at 1900 University Drive. You can shop from the comfort of wherever you are, no matter what the weather is doing. As an Online Market customer, you’ll get to know what local farmers are growing and local producers are making. And they’ll get to know you as a customer—the foods you buy regularly and want more of. All of our producers are happy to consider customer requests.

Friends & Farmers Online Market

I get to know what sells out quickly, so I encourage our customers to start shopping and complete your orders as early as possible after the Online Market opens at noon on Friday. You can go ahead and place your order, opting to pay now or when you pick up. If you pay now, you can add to or subtract items from your cart throughout the weekend; your account won’t be charged until the Online Market closes at noon on Monday. Anyone can shop the Online Market by registering, but if you join the co-op, you pay less than non-members do. Learn more about how it works and visit the Online Market when it opens at noon on Fridays.

Food Trucks Bring a New Kind of Flavor to Happy Valley By Blake Burfield Food trucks are hardly a new concept. They’ve always been common fixtures in big cities like New York and L.A., serving your typical “street foods” like hot dogs and tacos. But with their resurgence in recent years, food trucks have become just as popular in suburban areas, and their menus have gotten a whole lot more creative. Happy Valley has been lucky enough to benefit from both of these things, with three amazing food trucks now serving our streets with just about every kind of food you could want. Food for Thought is a true melting pot of flavors, bringing the best of the world’s street foods right to State College. You’ll find a little bit of everything here, and none of it disappoints. Try an international item, like Korean Pulled Pork with kimchi slaw, or a Curry Chicken Salad Wrap with curry aioli. Or go for a kicked-up American classic, like the Buffalo Chicken Sub or my own personal favorite, the Smoked Gouda Mac-nCheese Bowl. Food for Thought also incorporates new specials each week, and even offers the crazy-good S’more Sandwich and French Toast Sticks with Cayenne-maple syrup as sweet options. You can find Food for Thought at several locations throughout Happy Valley, including Innovation Park, Beaver Ave., and the Lemont Farmers Market. Check their Facebook (facebook.com/foodforthoughtfoodtruck) for daily updates on the truck’s location and specials. Street Meat, based out of Bellefonte, cooks up hearty meals using grass-fed, pasture-raised meats, along with an array of other comfort foods. With gourmet, juicy Angus burgers topped with everything from mac and cheese to slow roasted beef, this food truck doesn’t joke around. Their handcut French fries or mac and cheese make the perfect sides, or you can top off your meal with a milkshake or homemade pie. Both breakfast and lunch

Street Meat are served all day, so you can grab one of their Pastured Pork Sausage, Egg and Cheese sandwiches any time you like. Street Meat recently launched a second truck strictly for soup, subs, wraps, and made-to-order salads—vegetarians are welcome at this one! Follow them on Facebook (facebook.com/streetmeatbellefonte) to see where and when they’re serving each day.

Where to Find the Best Coffees and Teas By Blake Burfield Say goodbye to the days of Dunkin’ or Starbucks as your go-to caffeine supplier. Happy Valley has coffee and tea joints so good and so unique that once you try them, you may never want to go anywhere else again. From a full-on authentic Colombian café to a cozy shop that doubles as a book and record store, one of these Happy Valley gems is bound to change your coffee shop experience forever.

Barranquero Café

324 E. Calder Way, State College One of the newest coffee spots in town, Barranquero has already become a local favorite. It’s an authentic Colombian coffee shop that also serves fantastic Colombian finger foods like empanadas and arepas, the likes of which State College has never seen before. All of Barranquero’s coffee comes from Café Jesús Martín in Colombia—and most comes right from Jesús’ own family farm! From farming to roasting, it’s responsibly sourced coffee of the highest quality. The Colombian treats are equally satisfying. We suggest: The pour-over coffee and empanadas (choose from beef, pork, chicken or black bean)

The Cheese Shoppe

234 E. Calder Way, State College The Cheese Shoppe is known for being State College’s best kept coffee secret of over 35 years. With cheese in the name, Happy Valley outsiders would need to do a double take. But locals know that beloved owner Bill Clarke brews the best coffee around. Bill keeps it old-fashioned, watching over his roasts and chatting with regulars as customers pour their own cups and throw their change on the counter. It’s a refreshingly simple, one-of-akind coffee stop that you’ll fall in love with (that does, by the way, also sell a variety of really delicious cheeses). We suggest: A good old cup of coffee and some cheese to take home

Rothrock Coffee

Standing Stone Coffee Company

1229 Mifflin St., Huntingdon Nestled in beautiful Huntingdon, this Central PA favorite provides a great getaway from the bustle of State College without having to travel far, and the superb coffee is well worth a bit of a drive. Standing Stone roasts their coffee fresh in-house, making more than 10 varieties as well as seasonal blends. Whether you buy it by the pound or in single brew cups to take home, or order it in any coffee drink from the espresso bar, the freshness and flavor of this coffee is a guaranteed delight. We suggest: The Standing Stone House Blend

Rothrock Coffee

1736 S. Atherton St., State College Rothrock opened in 2015 and has gotten insanely rave reviews ever since. It’s the kind of high quality, chic-meets-cozy coffee shop you can usually only find in metropolitan areas. And if you think you’ll be turned off by the trendy vibe here, think again—this place has truly outstanding coffee concoctions and a loveable, welcoming staff that will make you feel right at home. Its out-of-downtown location with free parking makes it even sweeter. We suggest: A cappuccino, mocha or espresso… well, we’d recommend the whole menu!

Webster’s Bookstore Café

WC Clarke's The Cheese Shoppe

133 E. Beaver Ave., State College There’s a reason Webster’s is held in such high regard by locals. Their selection is out of this world, with all of their coffee drinks made from fairtrade organic coffee, over 90—yes, you heard that right—different teas, hot cider, Italian soda, and more. What makes this place especially wonderful, though, is that it doubles as a used bookstore and vintage vinyl shop. Webster’s is one of those magical gems with a coziness that you can’t find just anywhere. We suggest: The “Brown Cow,” a latte made with Meyer Dairy chocolate milk LOCAL FOOD GUIDE
